‘No comments, let me see…’, Sanjay Singh’s first reaction after suspension

New Delhi: In a major decision, the Sports Ministry on Sunday suspended the new body of the Wrestling Federation of India, led by Sanjay Singh. The ministry took the decision on the grounds that the WFI body had shown complete disregard for the existing rules and regulations. Reacting to the Sports Ministry’s decision, Sanjay Singh, the newly elected WFI chief, stated that he had not received any letter regarding the suspension of the WFI body and refrained from commenting on the matter.

“I was on the flight. I haven’t received a letter yet. Show me the letter first and only then will I comment. I have heard that some activities have been stopped,” Singh said.

The Ministry of Sports said in an official statement that the announcement for national competitions was hasty and proper procedures were not followed.

WFI went against the rules: Ministry of Sports

The ministry, responsible for looking after all sporting activities in the country, noted that the chairman of the newly elected body – Sanjay Kumar Singh – said the national junior competitions will begin before December 31. Singh’s made the announcement on December 21, following which the ministry revised its decision and stated that the announcement he made was against the rules. It said a minimum of 15 days’ notice was required so the wrestlers could prepare for the event.
“Such decisions (with nationals) should be made by the Executive Committee, to which agendas should be submitted for consideration. According to Article Even for an emergency meeting of the EC, the minimum notice period is seven days, with a quorum requirement of 1/3rd of the representatives,” the ministry said in its press release.

The Sports Ministry added that the new WFI body appears to have full control over the previous office holders, against whom major allegations such as sexual harassment had been made.

“The newly elected body appears to have complete control over former office holders, with complete disregard for the Sports Act,” the ministry said.
“The affairs of the Federation are conducted from the premises controlled by former office holders. These are also alleged premises alleging sexual harassment of the players and the court is hearing the matter,” it further added.
