Hooray! You can’t believe how relieved I was when I solved today’s Connections. I’m sure not everyone reading this column does this every day, so you may not necessarily realize it (or care), but before today I had failed four Connections in a row, and eight of the previous 15 games. It was a disaster. But this one isn’t so bad, and I’m back on track.
As is often the case, the key was to solve purple early. This is usually the hardest of the four groups and often involves a ‘blank’ answer, as was the case here. There was a fair amount of misdirection, with POST and STAMP among the LETTER and MAIL answers, but excluding POST as part of the ‘assignment’ group (green) pulled me away from that corner and pointed me to the CHAIN __ connection. With purple solved and green and yellow not too tricky, I didn’t have to worry about blue at all.
How was your day? Send me an email and let me know.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games from the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a bit harder, blue is often quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you don’t technically have to solve the last question, because you can answer it by elimination. Plus, you can make a maximum of four mistakes, which gives you some breathing room.
It is a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can obscure the answers.
It is free to play via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
