In the Christian calendar, Shrove Tuesday marks a final holiday before Lent officially begins tomorrow.

However, pancakes are not the only Shrove Tuesday traditions in Britain.

On this day – always 47 days before Easter Sunday – British people in Northern England also celebrate the day with a centuries-old game of football.

The Royal Shrovetide Football match takes place in Ashbourne, Derbyshire.

It sees the Up'ards – those born north of Henmore Brook, which runs through the town – and the Down'ards, those born south of the river, take to the streets where they compete for three times a tapping ball on stone pedestals that act as goals.

The annual two-day spectacle, in which players carry the ball across a borderless field while volunteer stewards keep an eye on things, has been played since 1667 and is more akin to a rugby match than football.

The match is played from 2pm to 10pm on Shrove Tuesday and the following day, Ash Wednesday, but goals are rare due to the size of the field.
