Breach of Parliament’s security: Manoranjan D, a Mysuru-based engineer who barged into the Lok Sabha on Wednesday and released canisters of yellow gas in the House, along with another accomplice, was influenced by Bhagat Singh and wanted to emulate the legendary freedom fighter’s act of throwing a smoke bomb into the Central Assembly, officials said.

According to police, Manoranjan D was associated with the ‘Bhagat Singh Fan Club’ – a social media fan page of the revolutionary freedom fighter – and appeared to be of a “revolutionary type”. However, Manoranjan has no criminal record and seems to have a calm demeanor.

“We did not encounter any criminal background. He was a very quiet person, but looking at the books he read, he seemed like a ‘revolutionary type’,” a senior police officer told news agency PTI.

The officer said Manoranjan appeared to be an admirer of Bhagat Singh and wanted to repeat his idol’s act of throwing a smoke bomb into the Central Assembly in Delhi to “make the deaf hear”.

“It seems they wanted to replicate what Bhagat Singh and his group did during the freedom struggle,” the officer said.

Another accused, Neelam Devi, who along with Amol Shinde organized a similar protest outside Parliament on Wednesday, is apparently also a fan of Bhagat Singh and had earlier posted a selfie next to a portrait of the iconic freedom fighter. Neelam had also participated in the wrestlers’ protest in Delhi earlier this year.

Major security breach

According to the police, six people, living in different cities, devised the plan to enter parliament via social media. The six suspects converged on a flat in Gurugram, Haryana and executed their plan on Wednesday on the anniversary of the December 13, 2001 attack.

Two of them – Manoranjan D and Sagar Sharma – jumped into the Lok Sabha chamber from the public gallery and opened smoke canisters, causing panic among the MPs, while their accomplices – Neelam and Amol Shinde – spotted colored gas from canisters and shouted slogans outside the Parliament Building.

According to police sources, Lalit Jha and Vishal Sharma are two other accused involved in the scheme. Vishal has been detained by Gurugram in Haryana while Lalit is on the run.

They all stayed at the rented house of Vishal Sharma and his wife Rakhi in Sector 7 in Gurugram.

The suspects have been arrested under strict anti-terror laws.
