Passengers have been told that they will soon be allowed to travel with liquids over 100ml in their bags as new technology has been installed.

The new scanners, which will significantly increase the maximum size of a liquid to two liters, were planned to be installed everywhere by June 1 this year.

London though Gatwick, London Stansted, East Midlands and Manchester Airport are among those who admit they missed the deadline, revealing the scanners won’t be installed until 2025.

The new technology will reduce waiting times by allowing passengers to leave laptops and liquids in their carry-on luggage.

The missed deadline from Gatwick, Stansted, East Midlands and Manchester Airport was first reported by a travel news publication TTGwhich acknowledged that the airports had made some progress with the installation.

Manchester Airports Group, which operates Manchester Airport, and East Midlands said: ‘We continue to make good progress with the introduction of new security equipment at all three of our airports.

‘We are currently rolling out the new technology lane by lane at Manchester and London Stansted airports.

‘We already have new scanners on a large number of lanes, with full completion of the program expected in 2025.’

Gatwick confirmed that work has started and they are on track to have the machines installed in the first three months of 2025.

Meanwhile, Heathrow Airport must complete the installation before the end of 2024.

Under new plans, all UK airports will be equipped with 3D scanner technology that can produce more detailed images, meaning passengers will be able to pass through airport security with containers containing up to two liters of liquid in their hand luggage.

The new technology will work by allowing staff to rotate, tilt and zoom each 3D image, allowing them to better inspect the contents without passengers having to remove them from their suitcases.
