People cry when diving parents name their baby with a fish motif

AN OCEAN-LOVING COUPLE have chosen a baby name inspired by a fish.

While some parents prefer to stick to more traditional names, others prefer to go for something unique, such as a different spelling or a completely unusual name. These two parents fall into the latter category.

The couple are avid divers and wanted to give their baby a name that would reflect their great love for the ocean and swimming.

But while fellow ocean lovers may have opted for more familiar choices like Coral, Sandy or Disney’s Ariel, diving enthusiasts took inspiration from a fish they both love.

The bizarre name is Tuna, which has led people to think that Sardine might have been a better choice.

One stunned user wrote on Reddit: “Tuna. They named their child Tuna. […]

”My goodness, they named their daughter after a fish because they checks notes “take diving lessons and love the ocean.”

The fishy moniker quickly sparked a heated debate on the popular platform, as other Redditors expressed concerns about baby Tuna as the little girl heads off to school.

Someone criticized the choice, writing: “That’s just plain mean, there are a thousand names related to marine biology that would be fine.”

Another agreed, adding: “My son is a certified dive master. He even recently got a cave rescue and recovery certificate, as cave diving is his thing.

“I would be furious if he named my grandchild that.

”There are so many good sea nymph names. Eudora. Melia. Calypso. Polydora. Theia.

”Then there are only names with an ocean theme. Marina. Coral. But they choose fish. “Facepalm.”

Others noted that Tuna was a more popular name in other countries around the world, such as Norway.

One of them said: “I know a woman called Tuna, but the pronunciation is not what you would think. She is Norwegian and it sounds more like Too-nay.

Are Unique Baby Names Worth It?

Fabulous’ deputy editor-in-chief talks about the problems she had with her name as a child.

As a child, I wanted nothing more than a personalized keychain with my name on it.

But it wasn’t. The closest I could get were Rosie, Joseph (not so nice for such a little girl) and Joanne.

Josie is short for Josephine, a French first name, and I’ve been in my twenties without ever meeting anyone with the same first name.

When I try to introduce myself to people I get called all sorts of random names like Tracey and Stacey and it can be quite annoying.

Although I’ve met a few Josies in the past year (there are a few around my age), it’s still a much rarer name than most of my friends’ names.

Overall I don’t mind it, at least it’s not crude or spelled weird.

And that means I can get away with ‘doing a Cheryl’ and just calling myself Josie.

I’m getting married this year and some friends are shocked that I’m changing my last name. It’s not considered cool or feminist these days. I explain to them that I’m not that attached to Griffiths because I always just say ‘Hi, I’m Josie’ when I call a friend.

I like being unique and I will definitely try to achieve this when naming my own children.

You have to watch out for the crude names, so after nine years as a lifestyle journalist I will definitely avoid them.

A fourth suggested: “Are you sure that’s why they did it? It’s a Turkish name.”

The author of the post clarified that this was not the case, confirming: “Someone had asked if it was a nickname for Tina and the response was ‘(husband) and I are scuba diving instructors, we love the ocean and tuna is such a beautiful fish!'”

But the little girl isn’t the only Tuna in the world – in 2019, a woman named Tuna Canoriginally from Turkey, spoke candidly about her nickname: ‘a great icebreaker’.

When Tuna ran for leadership of the student union at her university in London, she came up with the ultimate slogan: “Tuna in your sandwich. Tuna in your salad. Tuna in your union.”

The student previously spoke about her rather strange surname and said she is “used to jokes”.

She wrote: “Follow me as I try to maintain my cool/elegance/humor while responding to tuna kun jokes.

“Thanks for laughing at me – it was a great icebreaker and conversation starter!

“I’m going to make some tuna pasta now and relax until the results party!”
