Brother of mother who was killed in her own home by evil dad issues a brutal message to police over major failure

The brother of a mother murdered along with her daughter has blamed WA police and the government for failing to stop Mark Bombara’s murderous rampage – after being warned about him on three separate occasions.

Dennis Harvey expressed his anger over the double murder of his sister, Jennifer Petelczyc, 59, and her daughter, 18-year-old Gretl, during an interview with the ABC.

Bombara killed both women at their home in Floreat on May 24 while he was looking for his ex-wife, a close friend of Ms Petelczyc, who had left him weeks ago and had been staying at her home.

After the attack, it was revealed that Bombara’s daughter Ariel and her mother had warned WA police that he was dangerous and possessed several weapons.

“I spoke to the police three times to raise the alarm about my father,” she said in a statement.

“Each time I warned officers about my father’s weapons and told my mother about them, and I felt like there was a real and immediate threat to our lives.”

“I specifically said there was a Glock pistol that was not reported. I understand that this would ultimately be one of the weapons my father used to kill two innocent women.”

Tragically, Bombara kept his weapons and used the Glock to kill the Petelczycs.

On Sunday, WA Prime Minister Roger Cook announced new gun laws that would automatically remove guns from anyone accused of domestic violence.

But Mr Harvey, himself a gun owner, could not understand why police did not use their existing powers to remove Bombera’s weapons.

He said the WA Firearms Act already allows police to confiscate weapons or ammunition if an officer believes leaving them behind could lead to harm.

Mr Harvey said these laws should have been applied to Bombara as soon as his family raised safety concerns.

“It seems like the government has done some damage control and wants to make some noise, but they have totally let me down and totally let down my family – especially when they had a system in place to remove the firearms,” he said.

“I’m not going to rip off the police, not on the ground level, the ground pounders, the teams in the office,” he said.

‘There appears to be a system error at the top. The Prime Minister and the Minister of Police in particular have a lot to answer for.’

Mr Harvey also revealed that he never received a response from police officers after requesting a welfare check for his family on the night of the shooting.

He tried calling the house but got no response. Instead, he called the police, who told him they would contact him if his family was injured.

The police never called back, even after he called them a second time the next morning.

He only learned of the incident when his surviving niece Liesl answered the phone and confirmed what had happened.
