Plane crashes on Florida Highway, killing at least two people, authorities say

At least two people were killed Friday afternoon when a small plane crashed on Interstate 75 near Naples, Florida, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The plane, a Bombardier Challenger 600 series jet, was carrying five people when it crashed on the highway around 3:15 p.m., the FAA said in a statement. It was not immediately clear if the plane crashed into cars or if anyone on the ground was injured.

Photos and video from the scene showed the plane's fuselage engulfed in flames and a large plume of smoke hovering over the crash site.

A ten-mile stretch of highway will be closed for at least 24 hours. According to the Collier County Sheriff's Office.

Local officials encouraged people to avoid the area while the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board investigated, officials said. Florida Highway Patrol troopers also responded to the scene.

The plane, which officials said had registration number N823KD, was en route from Ohio to Naples on Friday afternoon. according to FlightAware. According to FlightAware, the next destination was Fort Lauderdale.
