Police look at Tory MP’s election marketing material telling voters it is ‘Labour for Largan’

The police are investigating Tory candidate’s marketing material following complaints that he is pretending to represent Labour.

Robert Largan defends a majority of less than 600 in High Peak, making it one of the top targets Keir Starmer.

But he faced a backlash after posting images on social media with a striking red background and the message ‘Labor for Largan’.

Mr Largan captioned the post with the red background: ‘So many local Labor voters have told me they are going to vote for me because they want to keep me as their local MP.

“There’s been so many that I’m starting a new Labor for Largan club.”

Critics suggested Largan could be breaking electoral laws, but the Tories insisted the material “clearly bears impressions” of the party he represents.

In the bottom left corner of both images are the words: ‘Promoted by Jason Mcleod on behalf of Robert Largan, of High Peak Conservatives, 1a Hardwick Mount, Buxton, SK17 6PP.’

A spokesperson for Mr Largan told the BBC: ‘As Mr Largan’s social media posts and website make abundantly clear, large numbers of traditional Labor voters have contacted him to tell him they are planning to vote for him to vote, despite being a conservative candidate.

‘The same goes for supporters of the reforms – this is due to Mr Largan’s strong record on the High Peak.

‘That’s why supporters’ clubs of traditional Labor and Reform voters have been set up, so people can tell Mr Largan they support him.

‘These are called Labor for Largan and Reform for Robert. Such supporters’ clubs are not a new phenomenon.’
