But it wasn’t until February 2022 that he and Ms Davison walked hand-in-hand around London, with Whitehall sources confirming to the Mail that he had moved into her flat in Westminster after a six-month relationship.

It is believed his wife and children still live in the sprawling house in Ascot, Berkshire, which Mr Kay bought with 49-year-old Mrs Kay in 2019.

In announcing their impending departure, Ms Davison made no reference to her partner’s family arrangements.

She said Mr Kay would become deputy ambassador to Brazil, a position he will hold for the next three years.

Ms Davison said: “When I announced I was stepping down, my partner started applying for roles within the Home Office and he has been offered a fantastic role in South America, so I will be moving with him.

‘The plan was always to move after the elections, but the elections have come earlier than we thought, so I’m moving abroad.

“We’re going to settle in Brasilia, which is a little less sexy than your Rio de Janeiro or your San Paulo, but it’s like the Washington DC of Brazil, where all the government buildings and stuff are.

‘It looks amazing. I’m still a little stunned that this is happening, to be honest.’

Ms Davison, an ally of Liz Truss, was once tipped as a rising star of the Tory party.

From September 2022 to September 2023 she was Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Ministry of Levelling, Housing and Communities.

She resigned because “chronic migraines” made it “impossible” to do her job, telling Prime Minister Rishi Sunak that the people “deserved a minister who can give the job the energy it needs.”

She then said she would not stand as a candidate at the next general election and the Conservatives announced Jane MacBean as their candidate for Bishop Auckland, County Durham.

Ms Davison said: ‘One of the great things about being an MP is that you can make a difference to things, so once I’m settled I want to be in a role where I can do that, supporting charities and doing social mobility work . , to get more women into education, those are the kinds of things I’m interested in.

‘When I said I was quitting, it was partly because I felt like I hadn’t spent enough time with my friends and my family.

‘So I also want to be able to support my partner, just as he has supported me in recent years.’

Dehenna said there that she is also looking forward to the contrasting cultural events she will experience as a young woman from the north of England attending events as a partner of a British diplomat abroad.

She added: “It will be completely different to anywhere else I’ve lived.

‘I grew up in Sheffield and lived in Hull and Bishop Auckland was a great home, so it will be very different, but I think there is something good about broadening your horizons and seeing new places.

‘Partly to see how things work elsewhere, but also to make you realize how nice your hometown is.

‘I just want to go there and settle down, because moving is quite stressful anyway, even if you’re only a short distance away.

‘This is very different.’

Ms Davison, the first openly bisexual female Conservative MP and campaigner for LGBT+ rights, split from her former husband, Hull councilor John Fareham, who is 35 years her senior, before being elected to Parliament.

She has been working for Tony Kay, the former head of the Arabian Peninsula’s foreign ministry, for about two years. Dehenna said she and Mr Kay always kept their careers separate to avoid conflicts of interest when she served as an MP.

She added: “We will continue to do that, but certainly at social events – and diplomats have to attend so many of them – I will be there quite often.

“I’m looking forward to the change of pace, but I imagine we’ll be busy when we first get there.

“It will be strange to be a plus one instead of having a plus one.”

In February 2022, a Whitehall source told the Daily Mail: ‘Dehenna and Tony’s relationship hasn’t been going since they met in 2019 – it’s been six months. His wife has known it for six months, the children know it, the Foreign Secretary Liz Truss knows it, James Cleverley knows it, his line manager knows it, the permanent secretary knows it.

‘He has done absolutely everything by the book and kept his line manager informed throughout. He is in the process of divorce with his wife, he is still married.

‘It is not entirely unreasonable that he still goes to the family home, but his marriage is over. Dehenna’s flat is her flat, and she has the right to have whoever she wants in her flat.’
