jammu: Parts of Jammu were plunged into darkness as power was cut due to heavy rains accompanied by strong winds that ravaged most parts of the region on Sunday evening.

Relentless rainfall, accompanied by gusty winds, swept through the Jammu region on Sunday, bringing relief from the scorching summer heat. However, the high winds also resulted in power outages in the former state’s winter capital, leaving large parts of the region in darkness.

Strong winds uprooted trees and felled electric poles in several places, resulting in power cuts in the Jammu region, PTI news agency quoted officials as adding that efforts are being made to restore electricity to the war base and also removed fallen trees and other debris from the roads to delete.

Broadband users also complained about service disruption.

While there was no immediate report of any casualties, a communications tower was damaged in the Bishnah area on the outskirts of Jammu, while border walls and gates were damaged in several parts of the city, the officials said.

Video of a two-wheeler becoming entangled in overhead power lines outside a saloon in the Greater Kailash area on the outskirts of the city after high winds went viral on social media.

Sana, the Scooty’s owner, said she parked the two-wheeler outside the saloon and got caught in the fallen electrical cables and was blown up in the high winds as the cables were pulled up.

The two-wheeler suffered minor damage when a crane brought it down safely with the help of several volunteers.

The residents also criticized the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) for the failure of the drainage system in the city as the rainwater flooded the roads in different parts of the city.

Jammu recorded a maximum of 38.1 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 27.7 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

The local weather bureau has forecast hot and humid weather in Jammu and Kashmir for the next six days.
