Christmas is a time for giving, but Quality Street, Celebrations and Roses seem to think it is also a time for taking.

Confectionery giants Nestle, Mars, Incorporated and Cadbury have downsized their chocolate tubs by as much as 17 percent in the past five years.

Cadbury’s Roses weighed 660 grams in 2018, before being reduced to 600 grams in 2022. This year’s tubs for UK customers weigh 550 grams.

Nestle’s Quality Street tubs weighed 720 grams in 2018. They now weigh 600 grams. This year’s Celebrations from Mars, Incorporated weighs 600 grams, 50 grams less than the tubs available in 2022.

The Christmas chocolate cubes are available for around £5 in UK supermarkets, which is the price at which consumers could buy them in 2018.

A Nestlé spokesperson said: ‘Each year we introduce a new Quality Street range with formats, sizes, weights and recommended retail prices based on a range of factors including production costs, ingredients and transport and the preferences of our customers and consumers. Final prices are always at the discretion of individual retailers.

‘This year we have a range in the store that consists of a 1.936 kg can, an 813 gram can, a 600 gram tub, a 357 gram bag and a 220 gram box. We believe this range and pricing is competitive and provides a good variety of choices for consumers.”

A spokesperson for Mondelez International said: ‘We understand the ongoing challenges shoppers face in the current economic climate and that’s why we’re working to absorb costs wherever we can.

‘However, we continue to experience significant increases in input costs across our supply chain, which has led us to make difficult decisions, such as slightly reducing the weight of our Roses tubs.

‘We have carefully considered the approach we take to our product portfolio in Britain to ensure we can continue to make the best quality products at the best prices.’

MailOnline has contacted Mars, Incorporated for comment.

It comes after John Lewis launched its Christmas store with the much-loved Quality Street pick ‘n’ mix – and a fan favorite flavor has returned after a twenty-year absence.

Customers can fill a new 1.2kg tin for £15 with their choice of 12 chocolates, including the previously discontinued Coffee Creme.

For £17, tins can be personalized with a name before being loaded with a selection of favorites, such as Strawberry Delight or Caramel Swirl.

John Lewis has even collaborated with Quality Street on a bespoke tin this Christmas. Alternatively, an old bath can be refilled for £12.50.

Otherwise, customers can fill their own advent calendar (£14) or a Quality Street cracker.

The Christmas offer follows Quality Street’s decision to bring back the previously discontinued Coffee Crème flavor after twenty years.

The beloved pastry chef said the popular flavor will be available to British fans.

The return of Coffee Creme comes after Quality Street surveyed the nation on their favorite retro sweet, and the findings revealed that Coffee Creme is the most loved retro sweet.

But fans of the flavor only have until Christmas 2023 to enjoy the delicacy, as it will disappear from the selection box again after the festive period.

The chocolate, made from decadent coffee fondant, is available exclusively from John Lewis and Waitrose retailers.

Quality Street Brand Manager Samantha Hirst said: ‘We’ve kept the exciting news about the return of the Coffee Creme well under wraps, so it’s a huge relief to finally share it with fans across the UK.

‘We know it was the one fans were keen to bring back when we asked the nation for advice in 2021, so it’s safe to say we expect to see some smiling faces on the news!’

John Lewis has also extended its returns period, allowing customers to return purchases made between September 27 and December 24 until January 23, 2024.
