My boss, 43, sent me inappropriate after-hours texts asking me to see a movie with him. I’m 19 but some are still blaming me for ‘leading him on’

A boss in his 40s has been criticized for being ‘creepy’ after asking a young staff member if she wanted to go to the movies with him.

The 19-year-old employee said she was at a loss for words when she received the unwanted text messages one night at 11 p.m.

The young woman shared screenshots of the conversation on Reddit and asked for advice on how to respond.

“He asked if I wanted to see a movie and I said I wanted to see Garfield’s (I tried not to let him think I wanted to go with him, although I see what that looks like as an invitation?),” she wrote .

“But then he spammed me with texts and I haven’t replied since the last one in the first photo… he sent a follow-up message today and I really don’t know how to say NO without seeming rude.”

The next morning he messaged again and wrote: ‘Did you choose a day? My intention is not to be pushy, nor to apply pressure. I just thought it would be cool to relax and do something fun.”

The texts raised alarm bells among Redditors who encouraged the young woman to tell her boss how inappropriate the request was.

“This is so incredibly inappropriate on his part, what the fuck. Absolutely not. I understand not feeling comfortable saying no,” one person wrote.

“But I think it’s best if you just let him know that you’re not interested and that you don’t think it’s appropriate for the two of you to hang out, as friends or otherwise — and keep texts.”

Another told her to text back: “Thanks, but I think it would be inappropriate.”

“Report this to his boss, he will be fired immediately, I swear,” they said.

Surprisingly, others said, while it was inappropriate, it was partly the employee’s fault for “misguiding” him in her first message – something she now regrets and admits she could have done better could have formulated.

“Definitely don’t say ‘Oo what movie’ and expect him to think you don’t feel like hanging out,” shot one.

“Oo, what movie…, you screwed up there,” one man agreed.

‘Unfortunately your reaction encouraged him enormously. But he should never have asked in the first place. You should tell him you’re not interested and then you’ll see him at work,” said another.

Another defended the teen, saying it’s not as easy as it sounds to say a firm “no” to a boss at that age.

‘Maybe she has anxiety too. “It was hard for me to be honest that I wasn’t comfortable with things like this – and expected someone older to know better, which was a mistake, but I was young,” she said.

“That’s not my fault, this isn’t their fault. ALSO they say BOSS!! I would feel pressured! They could easily be an asshole and fire this person. I would be worried and try to respond kindly – as I would to an old friend of the same age.”
