This is the astonishing moment a taxi driver fools death when a robber’s knife is deflected by his seat belt.

The 65-year-old driver took the 13-year-old boy for a ride in Sungai Petani in Malaysia’s northern state of Kedah.

The two are normally seen talking in footage taken from inside the vehicle before the boy reaches out and pulls out a knife to take the money the man took from his shirt pocket.

Fortunately, the knife hit the taxi driver’s seat belt and he is seen struggling to fend off the attacker and biting him as the teenager tries to steal the money from his hand.

The boy then abruptly leaves the vehicle and the man yells at him as he runs away, before putting his T-shirt back in place.

The frenzied attack took place on Monday around 6.20pm.

The suspect had used an e-hailing app to take a ride in a private rental car, Kuala Muda district police chief Zaidy Che Hassan told The Straits Times.

However, during the journey the suspect asked to borrow the equivalent of £8.50 from the taxi driver to pay his rent.

The driver said if the teen couldn’t pay for the fare, he would drop him off right there.

However, the boy demanded to be driven home to collect the money.

He then tried to extend the ride by instructing the driver to take a route along several alleys.

‘The driver eventually dropped the suspect off and asked for an additional payment of RM9. But while he was in the process of returning change for RM20 given by the suspect, the suspect tried to stab him,” Zaidy said.

The boy then tried to grab the money from the driver’s pocket, but the 65-year-old managed to take the knife by biting the teenager’s hand.

The driver reported the incident to police and the teen was located and arrested around 10 p.m., the Straits Times reported.

According to the newspaper, a 25cm knife was recovered from the victim’s car.

“Investigations revealed that the teenage suspect is the eldest of four siblings and did not come from a problematic background,” Zaidy said.

“The boy attacked the driver because he was angry after being verbally abused by the driver and was trying to get his money back.”
