Section 144 imposed in Mumbai till January 18, meeting of large gatherings banned: checklist of restrictions

Section 144 in Mumbai: The order under Section 144 prohibits the gathering of four or more persons, ahead of the Christmas and New Year festivities.

Mumbai Police further said that those violating the order will be punished under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.

Mumbai: After receiving inputs from intelligence agencies on terror attacks, mainly targeting VVIPs, Mumbai Police imposed Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure from December 20 to January 18, 2024.

The order under section 144 prohibits the gathering of four or more people ahead of the Christmas and New Year festivities. However, Dolphy D’Souza of the Bombay Catholic Sabha said this order will not affect Christmas celebrations.

Checklist of limitations

  • As part of the restrictions under Article 144, flying of drones, remote-controlled microlight aircraft, paragliders, paramotors, hand gliders and hot air balloons will be banned for 30 days.
  • Flying of such objects is permitted for aerial surveillance by the police or with specific written permission from the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations).
  • Police said the prohibitory order, which will be effective from December 20, 2023, to January 18, 2024, was issued under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).
  • According to the order, terrorist and anti-national elements are likely to use drones, paragliders, etc. in their attacks, targeting VVIPs and endangering the public.
  • Police added that the preventive order has become necessary due to the likelihood of use of drones, remote-controlled ultra-light aircraft, paragliders, etc. by terrorists/anti-national elements.
  • Police added that the VVIPs could be targeted by terrorist elements who could endanger the lives of the general public, destroy public properties and cause disruption of law and order in the metropolis.
  • Mumbai Police further said that those violating the order will be punished under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.
