Controlling husband stabs doctor wife to death for partying with friends to mark the first year of her residency before trying to kill himself

A Las Vegas man stabbed his wife to death before repeatedly stabbing himself, an arrest report shows.

It centers on 33-year-old Shiva Gummi, who was sentenced to between 10 and 25 years in prison for the murder of Dr. Gwendoline Amsrala in 2023 in April of that year.

The crime occurred a year earlier at the couple’s home, after Amsrala went with a friend to celebrate her first year of residency at UNLV’s medical school for a night of drinking.

Gummi disagreed with the excursion and devastated his wife – and himself – upon her return.

He then called 911 and told an operator that he had stabbed himself several times and wanted to die, according to the report. He will now spend at least ten years behind bars, a year after telling dispatchers he had stabbed himself ‘all over’ on his body.

“I want to die, but I’m not going to die,” Gummi told the operator around 8:15 a.m. on April 15, claiming he had stabbed himself five hours earlier.

According to a newly revealed report, Gummi added that he was in a locked bedroom.

“I want to die, but I’m not going to die,” he added, before being asked about his wife.

‘[She’s] next to me,” he said, Clark County police wrote.

When the operator asked if she could help control the bleeding, he simply said, “She’s dead,” and declined to answer any other questions.

Officers who arrived at the home were let in by Gummi’s mother-in-law, investigators initially said — a person who appears again in the newly released report.

After forcing their way into the locked room, they found Gummi and his wife lying on a mattress, both with open stab wounds, after which a large, bloody kitchen knife was seen on the floor.

Police reportedly rushed Gummi to hospital and declared his wife dead before questioning the remaining woman in the home.

She told them that she was not aware of any domestic violence between the two, but that Gummi had reportedly been angry because her daughter had spent the night with a drunken friend, celebrating the end of her first year as a doctor in course.

‘[Gummi] was angry with Gwendoline after she spent the night with a friend who was drunk after a night of drinking,” the report said.

Amsrala returned from the festivities before 9pm, while Gummi – who also went out – arrived two hours later, furious over the unsanctioned get-together.

At one point, he stabbed her multiple times before turning the knife on himself, less than a year after his wife graduated from UNLV’s Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine.

She was subsequently mourned by friends and colleagues in the Vegas medical community, when a GoFundMe set up by the doctor’s family stated that she was “destined to fulfill a rich and meaningful career dedicated to serving her future patients.’

“We always remember your after-school discipline, in [organizing] things, do homework and later meet or play with others,” her aunt added in an online obituary.

“We miss a young doctor in the family who had an infectious smile and the power to heal.”

Gummi was arrested during his hospitalization and reached a deal with the Clark County District Attorney’s Office last month – hence his light sentence.

He entered a plea deal with Alford to one count of second-degree murder, admitting to the murder at trial.

He already has 405 days credit for time served, meaning the remainder of his sentence could be less than 10 years even without good behavior.

He has also been asked to pay restitution of $428, KNV reported.

A post on UNLV Internal Medicine’s Instagram page following the death of their former student remembered her fondly.

It read: ‘The world has lost a great doctor who would have changed the lives of countless patients.

“Our program will miss her infectious smile, positive energy and the love she had for her work family.”

Gummi’s punishment is already underway, a year after the doctor saved his life on the operating table. Amsrala received her MD from UNLV’s Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine in 2022.
