Earthquake death toll in Japan rises

The death toll in Japan has now risen to 57 after a magnitude 7.5 earthquake rocked the country on Monday, NHK World reported, citing officials from Ishikawa Prefecture. On Monday afternoon, the earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula in central Ishikawa Prefecture, collapsing buildings and sending tsunami warnings as far away as eastern Russia. The northern part of the remote Noto Peninsula had limited access for more than 24 hours after the earthquake, although the Japan Meteorological Agency on Tuesday lifted all tsunami advisories along parts of the country’s west coast.

After a disaster emergency meeting on Tuesday, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida informed the media that the site was no longer accessible due to a broken road. He stated that after flying over the peninsula, known for its agricultural and maritime beauties, officials in helicopters saw major fires, landslides and damaged roads.
