Sir Keir Starmer was mercilessly mocked on social media last night after bringing up his father being a toolmaker again.

Discussing his own financial situation, Sir Keir laughed as he told the audience: ‘I accept that I earn a lot of money in the job I have now. But when I was growing up, my father was a toolmaker and worked in a factory.

As the audience erupted in laughter, the Labor leader hit back, replying: “It’s true – my mother was a nurse – and we couldn’t make ends meet, which is no joke.”

But as well as being mocked by the public, voters had no choice but to flood social media with jokes and memes about Sir Keir’s comments.

Sir Keir also brought up his childhood during the ITV debate, telling the audience: ‘My father worked in a factory, he was a toolmaker. My mom was a nurse, we didn’t have a lot of money growing up, but we were sometimes in a position where we couldn’t pay our bills, so I know what that feels like.”

The Labor leader wasn’t the only one to be mocked on social media last night; his opponent Sunak was also called out for claiming his ‘terrible diet’ of Haribo and Twix would make people ‘love him more’.

The Prime Minister chuckled as he said: ‘Funnily enough people seem to think I have a very healthy lifestyle and I go to the gym and all this obsession about my fasting.

‘But actually I have a terrible diet, I eat a lot of sugar and am very unhealthy in that respect, which I was talking to someone about today. They were completely shocked.

“I’m not sure if anyone likes me more or less, but it was something I talked to someone about today. And they were genuinely amazed at the amount of Haribos, Twixes and everything else I get through, especially during a campaign.

‘So contrary to popular belief, I don’t actually have a healthier lifestyle or diet.’

While another showed a wide-eyed girl who appeared to be in the middle of a sugar rush as she excitedly held a piece of cotton candy.

It capped a torrid 24 hours for Mr Sunak and came after he was ridiculed for saying he had to go without Sky TV as a child.

Mr Sunak and Sir Keir were both confronted with a barbecue as they answered questions at Grimsby Town Hall on Wednesday evening.

The leaders deviated from the usual head-to-head debate format, instead undergoing a 20-minute interview with Sky News’ Beth Rigby and answering 25 minutes of questions from audience members.

Sir Keir went first and was asked about trust issues, taxes and how he would tackle public services and inequality, while Mr Sunak was asked about his five 2023 promises and taxes.

A snap YouGov poll showed 64 percent thought Sir Keir was performing better, while 36 percent backed the Prime Minister.
