Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s hit single Murder On The Dancefloor will re-enter the Big Top 40 on Sunday, 22 years after its original release – and it’s all thanks to thriller-comedy Saltburn.

The Golden Globe-nominated film stars Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike and Richard E. Grant and is directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Emerald Fennell.

It follows a seemingly working-class University of Oxford student from Merseyside, played by Barry, 31, who falls in love with upper class student Felix, played by Jacob, 26.

The final scene of the film sees Barry’s character dancing around a country house completely naked, while the 2001 hit Murder On The Dancefloor plays in the background.

Fans’ obsession with the film, and subsequently its soundtrack, has seen 44-year-old Sophie and her platinum-certified song climb the charts.

It is now predicted that when the new Big Top 40 chart is released on Sunday, Murder On The Dancefloor will be in the 20s.

The song has also climbed the Spotify charts and is about to break into the top 10 thanks to Gen Z discovering the singer.

The song broke into the top 20 of Spotify’s UK charts on Friday and had risen to 12th at the start of the week – and now fans are vying for Sophie to claim the top spot they believe she originally deserved.

The singer was beaten to the top spot by Daniel Bedingfield’s Gotta Get Thru This when the song was originally released in 2001.

The song was the second single from Sophie’s debut album Read My Lips, following Cher cover Take Me Home, with both songs peaking at number two.

The video for the song shows Sophie entering a dance competition and killing or mutilating her fellow contestants so that she can win.

Fans have called on X, formerly Twitter, for the song to finally reach the top of the charts.

One said: ‘Should have been number 1 the first time but it’s had a long life. It never gets old!’

She looked stunning in a multi-coloured sequin dress as she kicked and writhed down the stairs to the beat of the song in a TikTok video.

Sophie spoke to Pink News in November about the use of her song in the film, saying: ‘I really loved the film.

“It’s funny because when you’re asked if a song is involved in something, you always get a little synopsis or a rough idea of the placement. I just thought it was brilliant. It’s so beautifully shot.

The script is bouncy and fun, sharp and witty, and then you get someone dancing completely frontally naked to my song. I can’t wait for more people to see it. It’s quite an unexpected moment.’

Saltburn is nominated for two Golden Globe awards: Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama for Barry and Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture Drama for Rosamund.

Rosamund, 44, plays Felix’s mother. This nomination is her fourth and if she wins, it will be her second Golden Globe, with Richard, 66, playing Felix’s father.

Barry, who hails from Ireland, first came to prominence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Eternals (2021).

He was nominated for a Golden Globe and won a BAFTA for his role in the tragicomedy The Banshees of Inisherin (2023).

Jacob was best known for his role in the raunchy drama Euphoria before winning critical acclaim for his role as Elvis Presley in the biopic Priscilla (2023).

Saltburn is now available to watch on Amazon Prime.
