Sydney trains: Commuter chaos after death at busy station, bringing entire rail network to a standstill during rush hour

Sydney commuters faced widespread delays and cancellations after a fatal accident at an Inner West station threw the network into chaos.

According to Transport for NSW, one person died at Macdonaldtown Station on the Main Suburban line shortly before 3pm on Wednesday.

Passengers are advised to allow plenty of extra travel time or, where possible, to make arrangements themselves after the death has brought the entire network to a standstill.

Trains are affected on the Western Line, the Northern Line, the Inner West & Leppington Line, the Blue Mountains Line and the Central Coast & Newcastle Line.

It took a commuter two hours to get from Parramatta to Wynyard – a journey normally taking 33 minutes.

Another passenger claimed that one of the platforms at City Hall was so busy that the railway staff 'locked the stairs'.

“Literally thousands were left behind on the platform,” they wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

A spokesperson for Transport for NSW said trains were stopping again at Macdonaldtown station, but passengers were advised to 'allow sufficient additional travel time on Sydney Trains services'.

“City trains are also returning to Summer Hill, Lewisham, Petersham, Stanmore and Newtown,” the spokesperson added.

'However, delays remain on most rail lines except the T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line and the T7 Olympic Park Line.

'Passengers should listen to announcements and view information displays as train stopping patterns may change.

“Buses can also complement some train services.”
