At one time, Prince Andrew had it all. 

Not just the Queen’s favourite son, he was a naval officer and decorated war hero whose dashing looks made him the ‘Playboy Prince’ – one of Britain’s most eligible men.

Recently, however, the Duke of York has become better known for one of the most extraordinary falls from grace ever experienced by a member of the Royal Family.

Today, he turns 64. But it is not clear how much celebration there will be at Royal Lodge, his grand home in Windsor Great Park.  

Andrew’s ill-advised association with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein led him to be stripped of his royal patronages and military affiliations, and to his forced retreat from public life. 

In 2015, Virginia Giuffre (formerly Roberts) claimed in a lawsuit that she had been made by Epstein to have sex with Prince Andrew on three separate occasions when she was 17.

Later, in 2021, Giuffre filed a lawsuit against the prince over the alleged encounters. He denied the claims repeatedly, but in 2022, settled the case – while making no admission – with a payoff to Giuffre. 

The Prince has strenuously denied all wrong doing and continues to do so. There is speculation that he had been under pressure to settle so as not to overshadow the Platinum Jubilee of his late mother, the Queen, that same year.

His reputation, however, remains in tatters.

The Epstein affair is far from the first time Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s third child has found himself at the centre of controversy.

Here, on his 64th birthday, Mail Online looks back over his life.

Born on 19 February 1960 at Buckingham Palace, Andrew Albert Christian Edward was the was the first child born to a reigning monarch in 103 years.

For the first 22 years of his life – until the birth of Prince William – he was the second in line to the throne: the spare to Prince Charles’s heir, enabling him to enjoy a freedom never available to his brother.

After his education at Heatherdown Preparatory School and Gordonstoun in Scotland, the latter famously loathed by Charles during his own time there, he followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the Navy in 1979.

In 1981, he achieved his childhood dream of becoming a pilot when he received his ‘wings’ and the best pilot award from Prince Philip.

In April 1982, he was sent to the Falkland Islands as part of the Royal Navy task force tasked with evicting Argentine invaders from the British territory, cutting a brave, adventurous figure as a helicopter pilot during the 10-week war.

It was for a particularly daring sort of mission that Andrew became famous: ‘decoying’ enemy anti-ship missiles. By the time Britain was victorious, causing the Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s approval ratings to soar, Andrew had become a national hero, earning the nickname Randy Andy thanks to his liaisons with a string of beautiful women including the actress Koo Stark.

Soon after, Prince Andrew met Sarah Ferguson. Though they had known each other since they were children because Fergie’s father, retired army major Ronald, had played polo together when they were children, and her father was also the polo manager for Prince Charles, it was Princess Diana who set up her brother-in-law with the vivacious red-head in 1985.

‘We were made to sit next to each other,’ Andrew said of Diana’s matchmaking during their engagement interview. ‘It was at Ascot, as it were, that the whole thing took off.’

Andrew and Fergie were engaged just nine months later, and in July 1986 they were married at Westminster Abbey and given the titles of the Duke and Duchess of York by the Queen.

They had two children together, Princess Beatrice, born in August of 1988, and Princess Eugenie, born in March of 1990.

However, the marriage was soon beset by troubles, the most memorable of which involved pictures of Fergie having her toes sucked by American businessman John Bryan being splashed over the front pages of the newspapers in 1992.

Later, she said of that year, which the Queen dubbed her ‘annus horribilis’: ‘From early on that year, Andrew and I had been discussing a separation. Not because we’d stopped caring for one another, but because I had reached the end of my royal rope.’

They divorced in 1996, but remain close to this day, even sharing a home at Royal Lodge in Windsor.

After leaving active military service in 2001, Prince Andrew became the UK’s special representative for international trade and investment, but his 10 years in the role generated a great deal of controversy.

His associations with corrupt politicians in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Tunisia, Libya and Turkmenistan raised concerns.

His judgment was questioned after he held meetings with Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s son Saif, and when he entertained the son-in-law of Tunisia’s ousted president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali at Buckingham Palace.

His relations with Timor Kulibayev, son-in-law of the president of Kazakhstan, were also scrutinised after Mr Kulibayev purchased the duke’s Sunninghill Park home for £3 million more than its £12 million asking price in 2007.

He also became known as ‘Air Miles Andy’ after spending thousands flying everywhere by helicopter, often managing to work a visit to the golf course into his working trips.

Indeed, it was often wondered what exactly the prince was doing on all these foreign jaunts. Simon Wilson, Britain’s deputy head of mission in Bahrain from 2001 to 2005, wrote in the Daily Mail that the duke was ‘more commonly known among the British diplomatic community in the Gulf as HBH: His Buffoon Highness.’

In 2010, Fergie had to apologise for a ‘serious lapse in judgement’ after she was exposed by a News of the World sting operation by Mazher Mahmood, the ‘fake sheikh’, in which she promised to obtain access to her former husband in return for £500,000.

The following year, Andrew’s trade envoy career came to a halt following the revelation that he was friends with the American financier Epstein, who was sentenced to 18 months in prison in 2008 for soliciting a minor for prostitution.

Photographs of the two walking in Central Park surfaced — after Epstein had served his time in jail. It was later revealed that Andrew had previously stayed at Epstein’s homes in Florida and Manhattan.

Following Epstein’s suicide in August 2019, the duke decided to give a ‘no holds barred’ interview to BBC’s Newsnight about his former friendship with the convicted sex offender. It was an unmitigated disaster.

He denied ever meeting Giuffre, offering a series of bizarre excuses to demonstrate why her claims he had sex with her were false, including that he was not able to sweat, that he was in Pizza Express in Woking, and that he had a tendency to be ‘too honourable’.

It has been reported that, failing to realise the interview had been a catastrophe,  Prince Andrew had initially been pleased with his performance.

 But his words opened the door to Giuffre’s legal action against him, which was settled, apparently with his mother’s money, in 2022. 

Devastatingly for him, it was with the Queen’s approval that he was stripped of his royal duties and titles.

Following the Queen’s death and Charles’s accession to the throne, it seems even less likely Andrew will regain a prominent public position within the family. The King and Prince William are both said to be determined that, while he remains part of teh family, there is no way back to royal duties.

There has also been speculation that the King wishes Andrew to leave his home of more than 20 years, Royal Lodge.

More recent reports, however, suggest the brothers have reached an agreement which will permit Andrew and Sarah to stay in the 30-room mansion.

Last summer, Sarah was treated for breast cancer, and then in January, she was diagnosed with malignant melanoma, an aggressive form of skin cancer. She continues to support her former husband, recently saying that she promised the Queen prior to her death that she would be there for him.

The pair have three grandchildren: Princess Beatrice’s baby girl Sienna Mapelli Mozzi, born in September 2021, and Princess Eugenie’s two children, August Brooksbank, born in February 2021, and Ernest, born in May 2023.

Their focus will no doubt be on Sarah’s health in the coming months, but if Prince Andrew was hoping the dust was starting to settle on his disgrace, that’s unlikely: Scoop, the Netflix drama based on his Newsnight interview, is set to screen in the spring.

King Charles was in good spirits on his way to Sunday service at church this morning as he appeared to deal with the humiliation of his brother Prince Andrew following the fallout over documents relating to Jeffrey Epstein.

The 74-year-old monarch was in good spirits as he walked to St Mary Magdalene Church on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk after it was reported that sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell had been ordered to search her phone and computer for phrases containing Prince Andrew’s name and the words ‘sex toy’ and ‘erotic’.

When the king walked to church a month ago, where the royal family attended the Christmas service with Prince Andrew in tow, he was accompanied by friends including Lady Susan Hussey – while Queen Camilla, who releases her reading podcast tomorrow, appeared to take the morning free.

Explosive court documents revealed how Maxwell’s lawyers, under orders from a US court, were ordered to search all her electronic devices for any mention of the Prince, other acquaintances of pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and a string of vile words.

These include ‘Prince’, ‘Andrew’, ‘Duke’, York’, ‘Royal’, ‘minor’, ‘massage’, ‘slave’, ‘sex’, ‘nipple’ and ‘dildo’, according to the damning legal papers . It comes after other claims in the documents that the Duke of York took part in an ‘underage orgy’ and enjoyed daily massages at the billionaire’s lair.

Despite the revelations, and amid mounting pressure on the king to evict his brother from the 30-room Royal Lodge where he currently resides in Windsor, Charles was beaming and waving as he headed to church this morning.

He appeared to shrug off the furor surrounding his brother’s name this week after a US judge ordered documents relating to cases brought against the late Epstein to be unsealed.

After Prince Andrew, who has always denied wrongdoing, was mentioned several times in the newspapers, this was reported by the newspaper Telegraph that the King is ‘preparing to stop paying for security’ at the Royal Lodge in Windsor, where the Duke of York is currently staying.

New details of a hugely embarrassing search – part of a 2015 defamation case brought against Maxwell by Andrews accuser Virginia Giuffre, née Roberts – are revealed in a trove of 130 documents, totaling more than 1,300 pages, released this weekend released.

It is not known what the search revealed, with Maxwell’s lawyers claiming it was a ‘wild goose chase’. The case was settled before it went to trial.

Last night a source close to the Duke of York told the Mail on Sunday how Andrew had been left reeling by the lurid new claims.

“He doesn’t have the emotional bandwidth to deal with this,” the source said. ‘He has locked himself in a room and has no idea how to react. He’s devastated.’

The fuss surrounding Andrew, who is still eighth in line to the throne, does not appear to have abated after hundreds of documents were made public in three days.

The court files were sealed in 2017 but published after requests from media companies.

They include claims that the Prince knew about Epstein’s sex trafficking, committed “acts of sexual abuse,” enjoyed daily massages and participated in an “underage orgy.” Andrew has vehemently and repeatedly denied all allegations against him.

Scotland Yard said last week it would not rule out allegations of sexual assault against Prince Andrew, while the release of the court documents would have strengthened the king’s decision that his brother will never be allowed to resume his royal duties.

A series of documents released in the early hours yesterday revealed a bitter legal battle between Giuffre and Maxwell’s lawyers over a 2016 court order for a search of Maxwell’s ‘electronic media’.

In a letter to Maxwell’s legal team, Meredith Schultz, one of Ms. Giuffre’s lawyers, demanded that Maxwell’s email and iCloud accounts be combed, along with her computers, phones and tablets.

Ms Schultz then listed 368 words to look for, including Prince Andrew, his initials ‘PA’ and ‘Clinton’ – a reference to former US President Bill Clinton. There is no evidence that Clinton did anything wrong.

The list also includes words that are sexually explicit or suggestive of abuse, including “erotic,” “masturbate,” “servitude,” “youth,” “schoolgirl” and “pedophile.”

Maxwell’s attorney Laura Menninger later objected to “the sheer number” of search terms, complaining that “conducting a search on Ms. Maxwell’s devices using all 368 terms will take more than a week.”

She emphasized how difficult it is to search for common words such as “bed”, “lingerie” and “bath” and the names of lawyers.

Ms Giuffre claimed she was forced to have sex with the prince three times when she was 17, including in a bath at Maxwell’s London mansion in 2001. The claims have been repeatedly and strenuously denied by Andrew.

Mrs. Menninger complains in one letter that Giuffre had sent Maxwell “on a costly, time-consuming and troublesome wild goose chase that yielded not even one quill.” It’s time to call off the hunt.’

However, the legal documents reveal that in order to comply with the court order, a search was conducted for 110 words – including Andrew’s name and the sexually explicit words.

The search led to the discovery of approximately 9,000 documents and messages, although it is not known whether Andrew appears in them.

The latest cache of documents shows Maxwell’s continued efforts to find new women and girls to satisfy Epstein, including having threesomes with other women.

They also reveal how Tony Figueroa, Giuffre’s ex-boyfriend, claimed that Maxwell would call him to ask if he had found girls to take to Epstein and how Giuffre, Maxwell and Epstein “were all intimate with each other multiple times” .

Figueroa was paid between $200 and $300 for each new girl he brought to meet Epstein at the financier’s $18 million mansion in Palm Beach, Florida.

In a separate statement, Rodriguez told investigators that there were “many photos” of Andrew proudly displayed at Epstein’s mansion, dubbed “the house of horrors.”

Meanwhile, Johanna Sjoberg – who was recruited by Maxwell when she was a 20-year-old student – ​​said in another document that she was paid £200 for each massage from the couple, which was increased by £100 when she did something sexual for Epstein. .

In her 2016 deposition, Sjoberg recalled giving Maxwell between five and 10 massages – with the disgraced socialite lying naked under a towel.

Asked if Maxwell had ever been naked or topless at a pool, Ms. Sjoberg replied: “I don’t remember. She was naked when she went swimming in the ocean.”

Maxwell was convicted in December 2021 of sex trafficking and recruiting teenage girls for Epstein. The financier committed suicide in prison just weeks after his arrest in July 2019 for sex trafficking.

Prince Andrew did not respond to a request for comment.

Prince Andrew’s former girlfriend Lady Victoria Hervey has posed in a T-shirt featuring the infamous photograph of the disgraced royal standing with his arm around Virginia Giuffre, with the word ‘faked’ emblazoned across it.

Socialite and former ‘It Girl’ Lady Victoria, 47, who is the daughter of the 6th Marquess of Bristol, previously repeated claims made by Prince Andrew, Duke of York in a disastrous 2019 Newsnight interview that the image of him and Virginia with Ghislaine Maxwell in the background had been doctored.

Virginia claims she was trafficked by the late Jeffrey Epstein and the now-jailed Ghislaine, and forced to have sex with the royal on three occasions when she was 17, claims Prince Andrew strenuously denies.

On Friday, Lady Victoria, who briefly dated Prince Andrew in 1999, took to her Instagram Stories to share a picture of herself in her T-shirt while holidaying in Barbados. 

In an edited version of the picture which shows Prince Andrew standing with his arm around Virginia, she is seen standing alone against a grey and yellow wall, with what appears to be a blue coat slung over her right arm.

Lady Victoria shared the photo on social media in February 2022 and captioned the image: ‘Anyone familiar with this photo?’, seeming to suggest that it was a mock up of the original image. No other version of the photo has been seen before.

She then posted the well-known photo from early 2001 of Prince Andrew next to Virginia and Ghislaine.

Lady Victoria asked her followers in 2022: ‘Do you believe that photo is real? Or what if I told you a survivor of Epstein’s told me it’s an Irish body double that was edited in.’ It’s unclear if she meant a double of the Prince or Virginia.

Prince Andrew told BBC Newsnight in 2019: ‘You can’t prove whether or not that photograph is faked because it’s a photograph of a photograph of a photograph.

‘It’s very difficult to be able to prove it but I don’t remember that photograph being taken… That’s me but whether that’s my hand… I have simply no recollection of the photograph ever being taken.’

The royal also said he thought he had never been upstairs in his friend Ghislaine Maxwell’s house, where the photo appears to have been taken.

But Virginia told BBC Panorama in 2019 that the photo is genuine and she gave the original to the FBI in 2011.

The Metropolitan Police says no investigation into Prince Andrew has been launched despite him being named in a tranche of Jeffrey Epstein documents released.

The Duke of York had been reported to the Metropolitan Police by anti-monarchy campaign group Republic after allegations of sexual assault were made against him in unsealed court documents.

Andrew was referenced multiple times in files relating to disgraced paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.

In a short statement today, Scotland Yard said: ‘We are aware of the release of court documents in relation to Jeffrey Epstein.

‘As with any matter, should new and relevant information be brought to our attention we will assess it. No investigation has been launched.’

Calls for the duke to be investigated were matched by a US attorney who represented some of Epstein’s victims, who said police in Britain have a duty to investigate Andrew as he ‘still refuses to fully account for his time’ with the paedophile.

The unredacted documents, which were released on Wednesday in the United States, included allegations Andrew had an orgy with underage girls and touched a woman’s breast while posing with a puppet of himself.

It is a fresh setback for the late Queen’s second son who, just 10 days ago, walked to church on Christmas Day with the King and the rest of the royal family, symbolising his gradual rehabilitation within the monarchy after his public appearance at his brother’s coronation in his garter robes in May.

It may see the end of his bid to reenter the royal fold, with well-placed sources telling the Mail that while the court claims were not a surprise, they will have served to ‘crystallise’ King Charles’s determination to solve the ‘Andrew problem’ decisively.

Plans were already in train to evict him from Royal Lodge, his ten-bedroom Windsor home since 2003, and move him to a smaller residence in keeping with his ‘downgraded’ status.

The newly released court documents are believed to have strengthened the King’s resolve that Andrew will never be allowed to resume royal duties.

The 63-year-old prince, who has previously strenuously denied the allegations, paid millions a year ago to settle a civil case out of court with Virginia with no admission of guilt after she accused him of sexually assaulting her when she was 17.

But he is mentioned more than 70 times in nearly 1,000 pages of interviews and transcripts released in the US in connection with a 2015 defamation case brought by Virginia against Ghislaine, who was jailed for sex trafficking young girls for Epstein.

The names of more than 170 people who were either associates, friends or victims of Epstein are being made public following a judge’s order last month, including high-profile figures such as former US president Bill Clinton.

The Duke of York has been reported to the police by the campaign group Republic after allegations of sexual assault resurfaced in unsealed court documents.

Graham Smith, chief executive of the anti-monarchy group Republic, said on Thursday that he had reported Andrew to the police, accusing the Met of failing to conduct a serious criminal investigation into the case.

The force said in August 2022 that it was taking no further action over allegations made against Epstein and that any future probes into human trafficking by the sex offender were focused on activities outside the UK.

It also previously said it stood by its 2015 decision not to investigate claims by Virginia that she was sex trafficked to London by Epstein.

Mr Smith said: ‘To date, there appears to have been no serious criminal investigation, no interview of the accused or other witnesses, and no clear justification for taking no action.

‘I am calling on the Met Police to reopen this case, I am calling on MPs to debate this affair in Parliament, and I am calling on Charles to make a public statement, in front of the press and taking questions, to respond to these allegations and what they say about the monarchy. 

‘How can we not expect a response from the Government and head of state? At the time of the alleged offences, Andrew was a government trade ambassador and an active member of the royal family. 

‘They fudged and obfuscated for 11 years before taking any definitive action.’ 

Mr Smith added: ‘The question many people will be asking is simple: if the accused were anyone else, do we believe they wouldn’t have been investigated and prosecuted?’

Meanwhile, US attorney Spencer Kuvin, who has represented some of Jeffrey Epstein’s victims, said people associated with the wealthy financier such as Andrew, deserve a higher level of scrutiny. 

Mr Kuvin told the Mirror: ‘Andrew still refuses to fully account for his time with Epstein and has failed to speak with US investigators about what he knows.

‘British police need to do their duty and reopen their investigation into his conduct.’

He added that Epstein is probably ‘one of the worst sexual predators of the century’.

Buckingham Palace, which no longer speaks on behalf of the duke after he stepped down as a working royal in 2019 over his friendship with Epstein, has not commented on the documents.

Evidence from Johanna Sjoberg, who worked for Epstein as a masseuse, alleged Andrew touched her breast while sitting on a couch inside Epstein’s Manhattan apartment as he posed for a photo with a caricature of himself in 2001. 

The claim, which has been alleged previously, is thought to refer to a Spitting Image puppet of the duke. 

Ms Sjoberg said, while giving evidence in May 2016: ‘Ghislaine told me to come upstairs, and we went into a closet and pulled out the puppet, the caricature of Prince Andrew, and brought it down. 

‘And there was a little tag on the puppet that said ‘Prince Andrew’ on it, and that’s when I knew who he was.’ 

Ms Sjoberg was asked what the puppet looked like and replied: ‘It looked like him. 

‘And she brought it down and presented it to him; and that was a great joke, because apparently it was a production from a show on BBC. 

‘And they decided to take a picture with it, in which Virginia and Andrew sat on a couch. 

‘They put the puppet on Virginia’s lap, and I sat on Andrew’s lap, and they put the puppet’s hand on Virginia’s breast, and Andrew put his hand on my breast, and they took a photo.’ 

Other mentions of the duke include previous allegations that Epstein ‘forced Jane Doe #3 to have sexual relations with was a member of the British Royal Family, Prince Andrew (a/k/a Duke of York)’ at three locations including on Epstein’s private island ‘in an orgy with numerous other under-aged girls’. 

The document claimed that Epstein instructed Jane Doe #3 to give Andrew ‘whatever he demanded’ and that Maxwell ‘facilitated Prince Andrew’s acts of sexual abuse by acting as a ‘madame’ for Epstein’. 

Ms Giuffre has claimed she was trafficked by Epstein to have sex with Andrew three times when she was 17 and a minor under US law at Maxwell’s London home, in Epstein’s New York home and during an orgy with Epstein at Caribbean island. 

She was questioned over the whereabouts of the famous photograph showing her with the duke, who has his arm around her, with Maxwell grinning in the background. 

Ms Giuffre added it may have been in storage boxes that were ‘full of Nerf guns, my kids’ toys, photos’ at her mother and father-in-law’s home in Sydney, Australia. 

She said she gave the picture to the FBI in 2011 but had last seen it before she packed up her home to emigrate to Australia from Colorado. 

Among the documents appears to be an email sent by Maxwell expressing her fears she would be questioned about her own relationship with Andrew. 

It reads: ‘I have already suffered such a terrible and painful loss over the last few days that I can’t even see what life after press hell even looks like – statements that don’t address all just lead to more questions… what is my relationship to Clinton? Andrew on and on.’ 

In Maxwell’s videotaped deposition in 2016, she claimed she could only recall the duke visiting Jeffrey Epstein’s private island in the US Virgin Islands once. 

The Met Police and representatives of the Duke have been approached for a comment.

We had flown into Edinburgh and driven some 80 minutes north to spend a few days at one of the world’s best golf destinations, and certainly the most famous.

People have been playing golf on the St Andrews links for 600 years. The history and traditions of the game, as well as the achievements of golfing greats, are woven into the city’s DNA.

Naturally, we tried – and failed – to get a tee time on the Old Course via the famous voting system.

Although disappointing, it is still a testament to this golf mecca that anyone (with a handicap of 36 or less) can play the Old Course by winning the voting lottery or by camping at the starter hut from 3am and waiting for dropouts.

So it was a case of out with the old and in with the new as we wandered the beautiful, undulating fairways and took in the splendor of St. Andrews’ New Course – which turned out to be a complete, total and utter pleasure.

Even on a Sunday in winter, the fairways were immaculate, the bunkers soft and the greens ‘absolutely mint’ – as a man in the pub had told me the night before. He wasn’t wrong.

The St Andrews Links complex has seven golf courses. Six of these, including the old and new courses, are in one location, while the seventh, the dramatic Castle Course, is just down the road.

Like excited schoolboys, we began our golf odyssey, winding from tee to green, weaving our way through the cavernous bunkers, often unable to escape their enormous faces.

There were good and bad shots, birdies and bogeys, and we were blown away by the spectacular course with the famous old town in the background. It felt like a privilege to be there.

Locals recommend placing everything around the green since the fairways are so manicured and the greens are mountainous.

More than once we’ve seen a ball go up a huge slope, but not quite make it to the top, turn around and return to the players’ feet. Note, hilarity.

A birdie on the 170-yard par 3 fifth hole sweetened the beer a little afterwards and did a lot to take the bad taste out of some of my wilder shots.

The New Course was built in 1895 by the manager of the green Old Tom Morris and is often referred to as the ‘oldest new course in the world’.

It is also generally recognized that it is slightly more difficult than the old one – and a good clutch test.

Aside from the lightning-fast greens and treacherous bunkers, the biggest danger is the wind, which whips around and wreaks havoc on club selection.

The sea also plays a major role on the incredible 220-metre par 3 ninth, which runs along the Eden Estuary. Don’t go left.

We crossed the forest of gorse bushes – another hazard that plays a role on every hole and should be avoided like the plague.

I enjoyed the treeless nature of the place, which allowed you to get away with errant tee shots… sometimes.

The sun shone and the wind died down and we were amazed to find ourselves playing in T-shirts in Scotland in November.

As the shadows lengthened, the clubhouse came into view. We stood on the last tee and looked out at a very familiar sight. The 1st and 18th of the Old Course – the widest fairway in golf – lay deserted.

We played the last one and hugged on the 18th green. It had been a day full of days that we would relive again and again that evening.

After a few quick pints we retired to the lovely Hotel du Vinlocated about a strong five-iron away from the Old Course’s hallowed 18th green.

Our elegant room, one of 42, had spectacular sea views and the property was perfectly located in the heart of the old town.

The walk-in rain shower, giant flat screen and super king size bed with Egyptian cotton sheets were all very welcome as we dropped our golf gear and relaxed in our new found stylish surroundings.

As evening fell, we dined on delicious steaks at the exceptional French Bistro du Vin, the jewel of the hotel.

Exhausted, we ordered enough to feed an army and especially enjoyed the whisky-cured salmon and tiger prawns to start.

The French onion soup is also highly recommended and the rosary goat cheese and caramelized onion quiche was divine.

Noticing that their butcher was supplying His Majesty, we dined like kings on tender 21-day aged fillet steak and 28-day aged ribeye, washed down with bottles of full-blood Chianti.

We ended our gastronomic feast with burnt Basque cheesecake, followed by creamy Irish coffee before retiring to the bar for cocktails and to lounge in leather armchairs.

It had been a thirsty day and we toasted long into the night.

Midnight came and went and we ended up walking the 18th fairway on the Old Course again.

We crossed the Swilcan Bridge reliving the memories of our own times and those of golfing spirits of old.

The track was bathed in moonlight and our laughter was carried away from the city and floated over the Black Sea.

What a journey. What a place. What a day to be alive.
