Still, some colleges and students are enthusiastic.

George Mason University, a large public university in Virginia, offers direct access through the Common App and through a partnership with local high schools. The university first offered direct access through the Common App in 2022, when 28 students enrolled. The following year only six enrolled. That may be because more colleges are now participating in direct admission, so it has become more competitive, said David Burge, the university's vice president for enrollment management. Still, “things are going very well,” he said, adding, “From our perspective, but for the Common App Direct Admissions program, these students would not be at Mason.”

James Steen, vice president for enrollment management and marketing at Houston Christian University, a private Baptist college with about 4,200 students, including about 2,400 traditional students, said more than 6 percent of freshmen enrolled for fall 2023 were from Niche's direct access channel. “Direct admission is a great fit for HCU,” he said.

The university began offering direct admission through Niche (for applications for the current academic year) in 2022, offering scholarships based on different GPA levels. (In November, it also began participating in direct admission through the Common App.)

Steven Navarrette, 18, of Manvel, Texas, received an email from Niche when he was in high school saying he had been accepted by Houston Christian. He was skeptical at first, he said, but toured the school, about 30 minutes from his hometown, and decided to enroll after receiving enough financial support. He is now in his second semester, majoring in computer science. “The process is less of a headache,” he said of direct admission.

Here are some questions and answers about direct admission:

Yes. Students self-report their GPA, which schools confirm. (Test scores are not always required, but some schools will accept them if submitted). Self-reported information has proven to be “remarkably accurate,” Niche's Mr. Skurman said. But if the information is incorrect, schools can withdraw an offer or reduce the scholarship offered.

A project host has shared the mocking response her ex-boss gave to a male colleague who had requested parental leave.

Jessie Stephens talked about this experience on Sunday night’s episode, when new data shows how few fathers are taking time off with their newborns.

“I remember years ago at a place I worked, a guy took two weeks of parental leave, and the boss said, ‘Oh, do you need to take some time off to breastfeed?’” Stephens said.

“I thought, ‘hmm, that’s probably going to have a lasting impact.'”

‘Certainly says something about the culture.’

It comes as the federal government wants to make changes to parental leave rules, with 20 weeks of government-funded leave currently available to share between new parents.

The changes would see two additional weeks of payments reserved exclusively for each parent each year from July 2024.

By July 2026, each parent will receive an additional six weeks of paid leave.

Simultaneous leave will also be introduced, allowing both parents to take four weeks off at the same time if they wish.

The scheme aims to ‘encourage shared care and send a strong message that both parents play a role in the care of their children’, Women’s Minister Katy Gallagher announced last month.

Author Jessie Stephens revealed on Sunday that her ex-boss asked a male colleague who had requested parental leave if he needed ‘time off to breastfeed’

Statistics from the Ministry of Social Affairs show that although 33 percent of employers offer parental leave, only 13 percent of men do so.

Last year, just 1,020 men had access to publicly funded parental leave, compared to 170,200 women.

‘Men only take 13 percent of parental leave because they still feel they have to conform to gender stereotypes. They still consider themselves breadwinners,” said Kati Gapaillard, CEO of The Fathering Project.

“They just don’t feel comfortable enough to take parental leave.”

“Corporate Australia needs to take a long-term view on paid parental leave for fathers, and they need to be a role model within their culture,” she added.

Now that 33 percent of employers offering parental leave have grown, only 13 percent of men take advantage of it. Last year, 1,020 men had access to publicly funded parental leave, compared to 170,200 women

Data shows that 85 percent of new fathers are likely to stay at work after their baby is born.

“Leaders need to take that with them to show the rest of the organization that it’s right,” Ms. Gapaillard continued.

“Mothers don’t necessarily have to mother the way they were mothered, and fathers don’t necessarily have to father the way they were conceived.

‘It is very important to break that intergenerational cycle and provide the attention, care and equal parenting that our children need today.’

Boy, eight, is ‘beaten to death by instructor the day after he enrolls in Chinese martial arts school’

  • The youngster joined Chongde Juying Martial Arts Sports Club on June 17
  • On June 18, he was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital after being ‘beaten’

An eight-year-old boy was reportedly beaten to death by his martial arts instructor the day after he signed up for the club in China.

The youngster, who has not been named, joined the Chongde Juying Martial Arts Sports Club in Qingdao, Shandong on June 17.

But on June 18, his parents, who had paid 7,680 yuan (about £837) for a year of self-defense lessons, were sent a video of him during training in which he looked “unusually pale”.

His mother noted that he was covered in bruises, which were mostly concentrated on his legs.

The boy was taken to Third People’s Hospital in Chenyang, where he was pronounced dead on arrival after allegedly being beaten by his instructor.

Medical records reviewed by the Chinese daily newspaper The Paper showed that his heart had stopped beating 20 minutes before arriving at the hospital.

Three people associated with the club have been arrested, including the couple responsible and a coach, according to the Chenyang branch of Qingdao’s Public Security Bureau.

Investigations are ongoing and the club is currently not running.

A video posted online and viewed by The Straits Times showed a boy wearing an orange T-shirt with the name of the martial arts club on the back.

He fell to the ground when a woman’s voice could be heard saying, “If you keep doing this, your mother told me she won’t pick you up for a year.”

Mr. Zhai, the boy’s father, was sent a video of his son around 11:00 am on June 18 and found him looking “unusually pale”.

His mother criticized the coaches for not taking him to the hospital sooner.

The martial arts club was registered only in April.

A job seeker is shocked after receiving a bizarre email from a potential employer at a dog shelter.

Take to Redditthe confused British candidate explained that the company, whose name they did not name, asked them to agree to eat vegan food only while working.

If successful, they must agree to only eat a plant-based lunch and use plant-based milk at their workplace, or to eat off-premises.

The post, which garnered more than 30,000 likes, was flooded with opposing views.

Many suggested they would like to have one vegan meal a day at the office, while others thought the lunch rule was “odd.”

Taking to Reddit, a confused job applicant, believed to be from the UK, explained that a company they didn’t name asked them to agree to eating vegan on the job (stock image)

The candidate shared part of the email online, writing, “Applied for a job, received this in an email. Can they really force this on me or not base a rent on this?’

The answer was: ‘Thank you for your request. Answer the following questions to help us make a shortlist.

‘Our workplaces are strictly vegan. You don’t have to be vegan outside of work, but you must bring a vegan lunch and have plant-based milk to eat on site or to have lunch off site. Can you confirm that you agree with this?’

One person wrote, “I’ll be a working-time vegan if the pay is good enough.”

As he joked, “I’d probably be fine with this because it would automatically prevent people from microwaving fish.”

While another said: ‘This is common for vegan brands, such as ‘beyond-meat’. To be honest, it would be a bit strange to eat your ham and egg sandwich in the office of a company that eventually wants to replace meat.’

However, others said that unless the company is vegan, it makes no sense.

One person said, ‘That’s so weird. Some startups really go out of their way not to hire them, lol.”

Another wrote: ‘I work for a fairly well known vegan food company and we have no such rules.

‘The food and snacks at the office are all vegan, but you can bring whatever you want to eat. People also bring non-vegan treats to share.’

While someone else said, ‘The only way I can understand this is if it’s a vegan cafe or a grocery store and they’re worried about allergens or something.

And even that’s a hell of a lot. For any other kind of job, this is weird – from a vegan.’

Another commenter questioned whether it is legal to dictate what people eat at work.

They said, ‘Everyone claims they would put up with this crap, nobody answered the question, can the company legally enforce this?’

Someone answered and said, ‘Depends on the jurisdiction, there is no set answer.

“However, where I am based, a company can in principle impose any requirement as a condition of employment, except if it is discriminatory against a protected class, and even then there are exceptions provided it is due to a bona fide professional qualification.

‘I don’t know of any laws here that state that non-vegans are a protected class. So yes, this is legally enforceable at least where I live.’

Another poster suggested the job is likely a volunteer role and joked that the Redditor could afford vegan food.

He wrote, ‘It’s an animal adoption agency, the only person doing the banking is the vet. His colleagues are vegan volunteers. OP isn’t going to make enough money to pay for the fake cheese sandwich.’

Someone else suggested a possible reason for the rule: “There’s a cat cafe in town that’s also strictly vegan, because they don’t want the cats to eat the customers’ food.”

As Ukrainian commanders prepare for a crucial counter-offensive to push Russian forces back into the war in Ukraine, 23-year-old Vadym, a military recruit from Kiev, says he wants to be on the frontline, even if it means losing his must lose life.

“We’re probably going to die,” Vadym said bluntly, training at a military camp in Yorkshire, England, on Friday. He was one of hundreds of Ukrainians to volunteer for a five-week crash course in basic training as one of the bloodiest stages in the 15-month war is about to begin. Like other recruits, he asked to be identified by his first name only.

Vadym said his gloomy view of his chances of survival was widely shared by his fellow recruits, all of whom are now halfway through the course.

“They want to fight, and being in hell on the front lines is part of that,” Vadym said, his boyish face covered in camouflage paint. “I realized all the dangers. It just doesn’t matter.”

He stopped himself: “Of course it matters, but still, it is the price we pay.”

It could be weeks, if not months, before Vadym and others currently undergoing basic training actually get into combat. The timing of Ukraine’s promised counter-offensive has been kept a closely guarded secret, though Ukrainian leaders have said in recent days they are ready for it.

That young Ukrainians are now enlisting, in time to participate in a military operation that could go on indefinitely, draws comparisons to American men and women who enlisted for military service after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

However, there is an important difference: the survivors of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan returned to a relatively safe homeland. The Ukrainians who crawled through muddy trenches during training exercises on Friday and stormed a makeshift hotel may be forced to fight for their country’s territory against neighboring Russia for years to come.

And while Western armed forces generally spend years in training, and many who enlist are professional soldiers who want to pursue careers in the military, the Ukrainians have “a different mentality,” said Second Lieutenant Jordan Turton, a British infantry officer who works with the recruits.

“Five weeks ago one of them was a translator, one of them worked in sales, one of them was a hairdresser,” Lieutenant Turton said. “The prevailing feeling is that they want to defend their country, defend their loved ones, defend their friends, their family.”

The military exercises in the rolling green and yellow valleys of Yorkshire – similar to the steppe of southeastern Ukraine where parts of the offensive are expected to unfold – were the latest in a mission that has trained nearly 15,000 recruits over the past year.

It was carried out on Friday by British and Norwegian troops who recently started showing Ukrainian recruits how to disable drones – a nod to their growing importance on the battlefield, particularly in the trench warfare that has become a hallmark of fighting between Russian and Ukrainian infantry. .

Lieutenant Turton, who recently completed his own basic training, said the Ukrainian recruits were aggressively eager to learn.

“To be honest, when I look back at this stage of my training, they are much better than me,” he said.

Just over six weeks ago, one of the recruits, who gave only his first name, Ihor, was working as a stonemason in Lviv. He said his wife and two children were shocked when he announced that he would volunteer for the war effort.

“And when they calmed down, they understood,” said Ihor, who was born in 1990 – the last year Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union. While democracy and other Western ideals have always been part of his values, it was only in recent years that he began to see Russia as a threat, Ihor said through a translator.

“The Russian story states that we are brother nations,” Ihor said. “But a brother does not come to a brother with a gun in his hands.”

The Liberty began their much-hyped season as the newest super team on the block, winning their home opener against the Indiana Fever, 90-73.

Fans at Barclays Center welcomed Breanna Stewart, Courtney Vandersloot and Jonquel Jones, while Indiana fans got a glimpse of Aliyah Boston, the No. 1 overall draft pick, for the second time in the regular season.

It was Stewart who stole the show, scoring 45 points, a career high and single-game franchise record, in her Brooklyn debut with the Liberty.

But this weekend, fans across the country didn’t see any of the standout players from this year’s NCAA Division I championship game that was drafted last month. They didn’t see Charli Collier, who was the first overall pick just two years ago. Neither a championship ring nor first-round status could guarantee a spot on a WNBA roster.

In the days before the season started Friday, those players were all part of a long list of NCAA stars who were unceremoniously dropped from professional rosters.

Instead, fans saw the emergence of two super teams thanks to a free arms race. The defending champion Las Vegas Aces added seven-time All-Star Candace Parker to a roster that already included A’ja Wilson, last season’s most valuable player, and high-scoring guard Kelsey Plum. The Liberty, a WNBA original franchise hungry for their first championship, added Stewart, Jones and Vandersloot to a group led by 2020 No. 1 Sabrina Ionescu.

How can future super teams like this be created if newcomers are not given a chance to thrive?

“Let me just say this,” Alexis Morris, who started as point guard for Louisiana State in the title game, said on TikTok after the Connecticut Sun cut her. “It’s OK if you’re waived for the 2023 WNBA.”

“Everyone did,” she added. “No one was safe.”

For longtime fans of the league, this isn’t particularly surprising. Dramatic cuts like this happen every year. With 12 teams and 144 roster spots in the league, only about half of the 36 players selected in the WNBA draft make it to Opening Day. Only 15 of the players selected this year are on a roster now.

Players in the United States must wait until the year they turn 22 to qualify for the WNBA, three years longer than men seeking to enter the NBA

“I’m in no hurry to get to the league,” said the star LSU forward Angel Reese, a popular figure in name, image and likeness deals since her team won the title in April. “The money I make is more than some people in the league who might be top players.”

In New York on Sunday, who played was just as remarkable as who didn’t. The Liberty had cut DiDi Richards, a fan favorite since the team drafted her in 2021. LaDazhia Williams, a rookie who was part of LSU’s title run, was no longer included in Indiana’s roster.

“Training at home for an entire league,” says Nneka Ogwumike, the Los Angeles Sparks star forward and president of the players’ union. wrote on Twitter.

There’s also a slew of fans looking for players they watched in early April. An average of 9.9 million viewers watched the championship game between Iowa and LSU, setting a record. The American Airlines Center in Dallas hosted a capacity of over 19,000 fans. None of the three finals players who were drafted made an opening day roster.

It’s a predicament that’s painfully obvious to both current WNBA stars and those who have been cut. This spring Plum, the No. 1 overall pick in 2017, started a “Dawg classwith the goal of helping collegiate athletes make the transition to the professional level.

After Morris’ first day of training at the Sun, she said on TikTok, “To grow the league, you have to prepare the players for what’s to come.” She added, “I think the style of play you play in college can help or hurt you as you move up to the next level.”

Even still, skill doesn’t necessarily translate into a roster spot. Current and fired players point to expansion – both teams and roster sizes – as a solution. More investment in the league, players and fans argue, certainly means there could be more teams and more seats for more players. Last year, the league raised $75 million from more than two dozen investors. Last season was the most-watched regular season in 14 years, with a viewership increase of 16 percent from the 2021 season.

But further change will take time.

“We’re in no hurry,” WNBA commissioner said Cathy Engelbert, adding that the league is looking to add at least two teams in the next two to four years. “Longer term, more than that,” she added.

The pressure grows as the number of viewers rises. A sold-out crowd of nearly 20,000 attended the league’s first game in Canada, between the Minnesota Lynx and the Chicago Sky, in Toronto on May 13.

On Sunday, Stewart watched the thousands of fans in the stands celebrate her super team’s maiden victory and home debut. “I think I made the right decision” she said of coming to the Liberty (1-1).

The Fever (0-2) certainly feels the same way about choosing Boston, which had 15 points on Sunday. She hasn’t been able to propel Indiana to victory yet, but at least she’ll get a chance to try.
