A job seeker is shocked after receiving a bizarre email from a potential employer at a dog shelter.

Take to Redditthe confused British candidate explained that the company, whose name they did not name, asked them to agree to eat vegan food only while working.

If successful, they must agree to only eat a plant-based lunch and use plant-based milk at their workplace, or to eat off-premises.

The post, which garnered more than 30,000 likes, was flooded with opposing views.

Many suggested they would like to have one vegan meal a day at the office, while others thought the lunch rule was “odd.”

The candidate shared part of the email online, writing, “Applied for a job, received this in an email. Can they really force this on me or not base a rent on this?’

The answer was: ‘Thank you for your request. Answer the following questions to help us make a shortlist.

‘Our workplaces are strictly vegan. You don’t have to be vegan outside of work, but you must bring a vegan lunch and have plant-based milk to eat on site or to have lunch off site. Can you confirm that you agree with this?’

One person wrote, “I’ll be a working-time vegan if the pay is good enough.”

As he joked, “I’d probably be fine with this because it would automatically prevent people from microwaving fish.”

While another said: ‘This is common for vegan brands, such as ‘beyond-meat’. To be honest, it would be a bit strange to eat your ham and egg sandwich in the office of a company that eventually wants to replace meat.’

However, others said that unless the company is vegan, it makes no sense.

One person said, ‘That’s so weird. Some startups really go out of their way not to hire them, lol.”

Another wrote: ‘I work for a fairly well known vegan food company and we have no such rules.

‘The food and snacks at the office are all vegan, but you can bring whatever you want to eat. People also bring non-vegan treats to share.’

While someone else said, ‘The only way I can understand this is if it’s a vegan cafe or a grocery store and they’re worried about allergens or something.

And even that’s a hell of a lot. For any other kind of job, this is weird – from a vegan.’

Another commenter questioned whether it is legal to dictate what people eat at work.

They said, ‘Everyone claims they would put up with this crap, nobody answered the question, can the company legally enforce this?’

Someone answered and said, ‘Depends on the jurisdiction, there is no set answer.

“However, where I am based, a company can in principle impose any requirement as a condition of employment, except if it is discriminatory against a protected class, and even then there are exceptions provided it is due to a bona fide professional qualification.

‘I don’t know of any laws here that state that non-vegans are a protected class. So yes, this is legally enforceable at least where I live.’

Another poster suggested the job is likely a volunteer role and joked that the Redditor could afford vegan food.

He wrote, ‘It’s an animal adoption agency, the only person doing the banking is the vet. His colleagues are vegan volunteers. OP isn’t going to make enough money to pay for the fake cheese sandwich.’

Someone else suggested a possible reason for the rule: “There’s a cat cafe in town that’s also strictly vegan, because they don’t want the cats to eat the customers’ food.”
