After receiving eight nominations over the course of 24 years, Christopher Nolan finally took home the Academy Award for Best Director last night.

The British-American director, 53, who is now based in Los Angeles, appeared emotional as he delivered his heartwarming acceptance speech for his blockbuster Oppenheimer.

Having thanked Universal Studios and his ‘incredible’ cast and crew, the father-of-four moved his focus to his wife Emma Thomas, who has produced all of his films.

He said: ‘Thank you for those who have been there for me and believed in me my whole career […]

‘My family and the incredible Emma Thomas – the producer of all our films and producer of all our children. I love you.’

The Oppenheimer director married his university sweetheart Emma Thomas in 1997 and the couple share four children. He has previously said he fell in love with his wife at first sight.

Christopher and Emma’s eldest daughter Flora, 23, made a brief appearance in his latest film as a woman whose face melted off in a nuclear blast.

But Flora isn’t the only Nolan child who has followed her parents into the creative arts – with her brothers Oliver, Rory and Magnus all having made cameos in at least one of Nolan’s films.

Despite their parents’ high profile in Hollywood, the children side-stepped the red carpet at last night’s Oscars – but were pictured sitting beside them during the ceremony and watching Christopher’s speech with pride.

Here FEMAIL delves into Christopher Nolan’s family life – after the director praised his wife and four children for their unwavering support.

‘Incredible’ producer wife Emma Thomas

Christopher Nolan met his wife Emma Thomas on their first day as students at University College London in 1989.

Emma was born in London but spent time living in the Middle East as a child as a result of her father’s work in the Civil Service.

Christopher and Emma – who studied English Literature and Ancient History – were placed in the same halls of residence and arranged movie screenings as part of their work with UCL’s Film Society.

In 2017, the director was granted an honorary doctorate and told graduating students: ‘We have four children. We have a body of work that we have made together.

‘So the moral of the story is: pay a lot of attention to who you meet on your first night at your halls of residence.’

During his Desert Island Discs interview in 2008, Christopher said: ‘I’ve come to believe in the concept of love at first sight because I realise it actually happened to me.’

In 2001, the couple welcomed their daughter Flora together – just one year before the critically acclaimed film Insomnia, starring Al Pacino and Robin Williams, hit screens.

The same year they became parents, the couple opened their own production company Syncopy Films.

Although the couple are fiercely private, they have shed light on their relationship in previous interviews.

In an interview with Variety, Emma gushed about her husband’s most ‘underrated’ quality.

She replied: ‘He’s funny! People think he’s dead serious, they accuse his films of also being so serious.

‘Even in Oppenheimer there are moments I find funny, even in the actor’s expressions. There is humour in his movies, and I don’t think he gets enough credit for it.’

In an interview with Screen Daily in 2018, Emma shed light on their creative partnership and detailed how she’ll often give her husband books she thinks could be adapted on screen.

Pictured: the couple attending the Oppenheimer premiere in Leicester Square in London in July 2023

She joked: ‘Yes, I’ll continue to give him books and he’ll continue to not be excited by some.’

In 2018, Christopher said he enjoys working with Emma and writing scripts with his brother because their ‘only agenda is making the best film possible’.

During his appearance on Desert Island Discs, the director – who was promoting Dunkirk at the time – said the key to his success was ‘surrounding yourself with the people who understand and support what it is you’re trying to do, but are unafraid to criticise… You’re looking for honest feedback without an agenda.’

What’s more, Christopher has also previously credited his wife for coming out with the ‘correct answer’ regarding the end of the 2010 movie Inception.

Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Christopher explained how he was constantly being asked if Leonardo DiCaprio’s character Cobb was still dreaming at the end when the movie first came out.

Praising his wife’s interpretation, Christopher said: ‘I think it was Emma who pointed out the correct answer, really, is that the character, Leo’s character – the point of the shot is the character doesn’t care at that point. It’s not a question I comfortably answer.’

Flora Nolan’s devastating Oppenheimer cameo

The couple’s eldest child Flora appears to be following her parents into the creative industry – having studied Collaborative Arts at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.

Flora supported her father last year when she made a fleeting appearance in Oppenheimer as a woman who is affected by a nuclear bomb.

In June 2023, Christopher revealed that he cast Flora as a woman whose face melts off in Oppenheimer in the wake of a nuclear bomb explosion.

Speaking to The Telegraph, the director explained: ‘We needed someone to do that small part of a somewhat experimental and spontaneous sequence. So it was wonderful to just have her sort of roll with it.’

Although Christopher admitted that the casting may have seemed strange at first, the director said watching his daughter play that part brought the subject matter really hit home for him.

He added: ‘The point is that if you create the ultimate destructive power it will also destroy those who are near and dear to you.

‘I suppose this was my way of expressing that in what, to me, were the strongest possible terms.’

In an interview that appears on the university’s website, Flora revealed that she is also an aspiring filmmaker and credits her father for showing her how to film on Super 8 movie film.

She said: ‘My dad taught me how to shoot on Super 8 when I was younger and I’ve been into it ever since. I just love the way it looks.

‘Shooting on film has given me a really great understanding of light and colour and I would love to shoot on larger format if I get a chance.’

What’s more, she also revealed that she is following in her mother’s footsteps by producing a short film with two friends.

On top of this, Flora is also an aspiring musician – and detailed in the interview how she likes to layer ‘ambient sounds’ in her productions.

She added: ‘I’ll record the birds outside or rain or people talking and use that as a starting point. I love singing and it just feels like a really interesting tool to use.

‘There are a lot of ways you can sample and chop up the human voice to create all kinds of sounds.’

Following in his big sister’s footsteps, aspiring photographer Magnus Nolan, 15, also made a brief appearance in one of his father’s films.

When he was a toddler, Christopher and Emma’s son played James Cobb in Inception.

He only appeared in fleeting moments in the film and was seen from the back playing on a beach in Cobb’s memory.

What’s more, Magnus’ father has been especially supportive of his dream of becoming a photographer.

In June 2023, Wired magazine published a profile of Christopher Nolan featuring only images his son had taken.

The following month, Magnus travelled to China with his father to promote Oppenheimer.

The aspiring photographer also walked the BAFTAs red carpet with his parents in London last month.

Like Magnus and Flora, Rory Nolan has also made a cameo in his parents’ films.

Christopher and Emma’s son is credited as the ‘boy on the bridge’ in the 2014 movie Interstellar.

In The Dark Knight Rises, Rory appeared as ‘the boy on the bus’ during one of Batman’s battles.

According to Screen Rant, Nolan names the working titles of his films after his children and The Dark Knight rises was dubbed ‘Rory’s First Kiss’.

The publication reports that Inception was dubbed ‘Oliver’s Arrow’ for a time while Interstellar had the working title of ‘Flora’s Letter’.

In 2006, Christopher and Emma’s eldest son Oliver was only a baby when he appeared in their film The Prestige, starring Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman and Michael Cane.

While promoting Oppenheimer, Christopher shed light on a conversation he’d had with his children about the film.

Speaking to Wired, the director said: ‘I told one of my sons about it as I started to write it, and he literally said to me: “But nobody really worries about that anymore.”

‘Two years later, he’s not saying that. The world’s changed again. And that’s a lesson for all of us, but particularly for the young. The world changes fast.’

As well as paying tribute to his wife in his BAFTA acceptance speech last night, Nolan also recognised campaigning groups who have ‘fought long and hard to reduce the number of nuclear weapons’.

He added: ‘In accepting this I do just want to acknowledge their efforts and point out they show the necessity and potential of efforts for peace.’

Oppenheimer won a whopping seven Oscars at Sunday night’s Academy Awards – while rival Barbie only won one.

The historical epic directed by Christopher Nolan swept the major categories with wins for Best Actor Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor Robert Downey Jr. and Nolan – with the film also winning Best Picture.

In contrast, Barbie, who memorably won against Oppenheimer in the ‘Barbenheimer’ box office showdown over the summer, walked away with just one award for Best Original Song for What Was I Made For? by Billie Eilish and Finneas McConnell.

Downey Jr. jokingly thanked his ‘terrible childhood’ as he finally won an Oscar for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss, was delighted as he took to the stage –  after host Jimmy Kimmel made a very awkward quip about his drug use.

The veteran actor – who has acted for over five decades –  took home the Academy Award over stiff competition including Sterling K. Brown, American Fiction, Robert De Niro, Killers of the Flower Moon, Ryan Gosling, Barbie, and Mark Ruffalo, Poor Things.

He continued: 'Here's my little secret. I needed this job more than it needed me. Chris knew it, Emma made sure that she surrounded me with one of the great casts and crews of all time, Emily, Cillian, it was fantastic

The talented star took to the podium to showcase his signature wit and even joked about his ‘terrible childhood’ while accepting the honor.

He said: ‘Thank you, thank you. Ah — thanks, Sam, thanks, fellas. You only flubbed one line. I’d like to thank my terrible childhood and The Academy, in that order.

‘I’d like to thank my — veterinarian — I meant wife, Susan Downey over there. She found me a snarling rescue pet and you loved me back to life. That’s why I’m here. Thank you.’

The talented actor went on talk about how much he needed his role in Oppenheimer while thanking director Christopher Nolan and castmates Emily Blunt and Cillian Murphy.

Worst Oscars ever — or at least in recent memory.

This is what Hollywood gets for pushing out the likes of Ricky Gervais and Chris Rock: a toothless host in Jimmy Kimmel, warmed-over jokes that landed with a thud, and queasy politics that only hit one target hard.

Trump: End times personified. Hamas? Just misunderstood.

Celebrities including Mark Ruffalo and Billie Eilish walked the red carpet with red ‘ceasefire’ pins, but nobody — not even Jonathan Glazer, the writer/director of ‘The Zone of Interest’, a masterpiece about the Holocaust — would stand up for Israel.

Glazer, in a supreme act of self-loathing, went so far as to renounce his Judaism. Thanking his partners, he said: ‘Right now, we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people.’

Abhorrent.

(Pictured, right: Billie Eilish and brother Finneas).

The hostages still held by Hamas warranted zero mentions, not even from Steven Spielberg, wheeled out on the 30th anniversary of ‘Schindler’s List’.

Nor were we told why the ceremony, bumped up an hour early for the very first time, began almost ten minutes late.

As it turns out, pro-Palestinian protesters were blocking the route to the ceremony. But referencing them at all was off-limits.

No one had an issue standing up for Ukraine or awarding the documentary ’20 Days in Mariupol’. Nor was the inclusion of Alexei Navalny in the ‘In Memoriam’ segment — otherwise a disaster of terrible camera angles and interpretive dance — remotely controversial.

Israel and the attacks of October 7, however, went unmentioned.

Instead, the Oscars turned into a Barbie-fest, some sort of weird apologia for snubbing (rightly!) star Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig, whose ever-supplicant mugging for the camera — as if she just can’t believe she’s allowed in the room — has aged harder than Al Pacino.

‘Barbie’ was terrible. It was a glorified infomercial for Mattel. Yet we have been told incessantly that America Ferrara’s clichéd, hackneyed speech about the would-be terrors of womanhood is a revelation. A soliloquy on par with ‘to be or not to be’.

Please. Ferrera’s trite sentiment is a bumper sticker from 1975.

Not enough that the Oscars opened with a ‘Barbie’ sketch, that we had multiple ‘Barbie’ musical numbers, that co-stars Kate McKinnon and America Ferrera jointly presented an award, that the ‘Barbie’ theme music closed out the ceremony.

No, we had to endure Rita Moreno paying tribute to nominee Ferrera: ‘Your powerful ‘Barbie’ monologue [about] the most impossible standards females must try to live up to galvanized everyone with a pulse’.

Did it, really? Wouldn’t ‘Barbie’ have swept the Oscars if so? It can’t be a feminist movie while treating womanhood as an inexorable burden.

Here’s another unpopular opinion, one not said in polite society: Lily Gladstone was the worst thing about ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’. Just terrible.

Her performance was wooden, one-note, and somnambulant. It lacked the urgency one might expect in portraying a young wife and mother whose husband is slowly poisoning her to death.

Gladstone’s nomination felt more like the Academy congratulating itself for including a Native American actress rather than one based on merit.

As for that self-regard: Could the staging of major categories have been more insufferable?

Out came five actors or actresses, former Oscar winners, who spoke directly to each of the nominees as if they had just cured cancer.

How amazing to hear Charlize Theron, addressing Annette Bening for her titular role in ‘Nyad’, mispronounce the legendary swimmer’s first name not once, but twice, as ‘Diane’.

It’s ‘Diana’. Is that so hard?

Bening watched, stone-faced and unamused, as Emma Stone beat her out for Best Actress and took the stage a breathless, tearful mess.

Stone had no idea what she was doing there, she said, and didn’t know what to say — even though she spent months campaigning for this award.

It called to mind the embarrassing profile of Kate Winslet in the New York Times magazine last week. Here we learned that Winslet isn’t just an actress.

No: If you can believe it — and our far-too-gullible celebrity profiler can — Winslet can hold her breath underwater for more than seven straight minutes, while Navy SEALs can only muster three.

And Winslet is so high-minded, so diffident about her looks, that she claims never to have heard of Ozempic.

‘What is it?’ she asked.

HA! This is a woman who has spent years bitching about Hollywood’s fixation on female bodies and her own weight.

Emma Stone took the stage a breathless, tearful mess. Stone had no idea what she was doing there, she said, and didn't know what to say - even though she spent months campaigning for this award.

Emma Stone took the stage a breathless, tearful mess. Stone had no idea what she was doing there, she said, and didn’t know what to say – even though she spent months campaigning for this award.

Back to the hyperventilating Stone, who admitted in her speech — again, she had no idea what she was doing there! — that she had nonetheless spent the night before freaking out that she might win. She actually said that her director had to talk her down, telling her to ‘take yourself out of it’.

If only!

That was a note Emily Blunt could have taken, draping herself over every single ‘Oppenheimer’ winner — she herself losing Best Supporting Actress to Da’Vine Joy Randolph — while wearing a bizarre dress with hovering shoulder straps.

Only Greta Gerwig rivaled her in hogging screen time, Gerwig planted front row and singing along to Ryan Gosling’s clearly lip-synched, campy ‘I’m Just Ken’ number — Ken, we were told by presenter Christoph Waltz, as the ’embodiment of human empathy’.

Sorry — isn’t Ken a plastic doll with no genitalia?

Which brings us to flailing Kimmel’s Hail Mary, dragging out a naked John Cena, his nether regions covered by an envelope, looking waxed, plucked, tufted and tanned-up for a sight gag that went on far too long and wasn’t even funny.

As ever, I am no Donald Trump fan, but his Truth Social post during the ceremony — read aloud by Kimmel — was dead-on.

‘Has there EVER been a WORSE HOST than Jimmy Kimmel at the Oscars’, Trump wrote.

Who here disagrees?

To share yet another unpopular opinion: ‘Oppenheimer’, save the lead performances of winners Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr., is overrated.

It was an excruciatingly long and talky mess. The timeline was hard to follow. The women were underdeveloped – a common critique of Christopher Nolan’s work – and it’s clear that at this point he has zero interest in remedying that.

Furthermore, it retroactively paints President Truman as a MAGA hick who delighted in dropping the atomic bomb on Japanese civilians. There’s a distinct European sneer at America here.

Still, the Oscars was not without its highlights, scant as they were.

Robert Downey Jr.’s opening line in his acceptance speech was a killer: ‘I’d like to thank my terrible childhood, and the Academy, in that order’.

Also in attendance was Messi, the dog from ‘Anatomy of a Fall’, fake-applauding in the audience.

Talk about a performance! This dog gave an overdose scene to rival Jennifer Connelly in ‘Requiem for a Dream’. This dog knew how to comport himself: No whining, no salivating, no jumping out of his seat to pull focus.

And this dog gave us the most perfect ending to the night. Outside, alone, on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, he lifted his leg and peed on Matt Damon’s star. Perfection.

Ryan Gosling brought the ‘Kenergy’ as he performed nominated track I’m Just Ken at Sunday’s Oscars.

The Best Supporting Actor nominee, 43, donned a sparkling pink suit as he exuded confidence onstage – accompanied by his Barbie co-stars and Guns N Roses guitarist Slash, 58.

Gosling started off his performance wearing shades and sat in the audience alongside Barbie star Margot Robbie, 33, as she giggled.

He then prowled his way to the stage where he joined a host of tuxedo clad back-up dancers.

Tenderly stroking their faces he was picked up and twirled in the air by the dancers before joining co-stars including Simu Liu onstage.

Gosling also enjoyed a reunion with his La La Land co-star Emma Stone as he serenaded her while walking into the audience.

Fans quickly noticed a similarity between Gosling’s performance and Marilyn Monroe’s iconic Gentleman Prefer Blondes scene in 1953 in which she performed Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend.

Barbie – was nominated for eight awards, but also fell victim to notable snubs from the Academy.

Its star Margot was not nominated for best actress, while Greta Gerwig was not nominated for best director.

Another surprise saw America Ferrera nominated for best supporting actress over her role in Barbie, with pundits saying her character’s impassioned speech on feminism had sealed the deal.

Barbie’s other nominations include best picture, best supporting actor for Gosling – who lost to Oppenheimer’s Robert Downey Jr. and two nods for best song – for I’m Just Ken and Billie Eilish track, What Was I Made For? – winning in the latter category.

Gerwig was nominated for best director in 2018 for her solo directorial debut, Lady Bird.

Only three women have won Oscars for best director – Kathryn Bigelow, Chloe Zhao and Jane Campion.

Jimmy Kimmel roasted Robert Downey Jr’s manhood and past drug use in his bombshell opening monologue at the 2024 Oscars on Sunday – while also appearing to upset actress Emma Stone.

The host, 56, returning for the fourth time, left the A-listers grinning and cringing in equal measure as he took to the stage.

Downey Jr. 58, who is nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Oppenheimer was stony-faced as Kimmel made a crass joke at the start of the ceremony – referring to the reformed coke addict’s past addictions.

He said: ‘And Robert Downey Jr., one of the highest points of his career. But Robert has been’ – as RDJ pointed at his face, leading Kimmel to add: ‘Was that too on the nose or a drug motion you made?

‘But look at him, he’s so handsome, so talented, he’s won every award there is to win. Is that an acceptance speech in your pocket or do you just have a very rectangular penis?’

The joke fell flat as RDJ looked somber while staring at the camera while fans slammed Kimmel for his ‘bottom of the barrel’ jokes about substance abuse.

Later, Kimmel appeared to catch the ire of Emma Stone’s performance in Poor Things, joking about the explicit sex scenes by saying: ‘Those were all the parts of Poor Things that we’re allowed to show on TV.’

The camera then cut to Stone making a less than impressed face, with some speculation she even called him a ‘p***k.’

Oppenheimer won a whopping seven Oscars at Sunday night’s Academy Awards – while rival Barbie only won one.

Meanwhile Emma Stone led Poor Things to an impressive four including her Best Actress win and UK film The Zone Of Interest won two at the gala event held at The Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California.

Oppenheimer won seven awards in total – as well as Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, and Best Picture,  it won Original Score for Ludwig Göransson – along with cinematography and achievement in film editing.

Al Pacino announced Oppenheimer as the Best Picture winner without bothering to name all the other nominees.

After the two films were released on the same day – July 21 – Barbenheimer gripped film fans who made an event out of going directly from the screening of one to the other.

Barbie was the highest-grossing movie of the year on both the domestic ($636.2 million) and worldwide ($1.445 billion) box office charts.

Oppenheimer took fifth place ($326.1 million) on the domestic box office charts and third place ($957.8 million) on the worldwide charts.

Meanwhile Emma, 35, powered through a wardrobe malfunction as she beat out an impressive field including favorite Lily Gladstone from Killers Of The Flower Moon in addition to Annette Bening, Nyad, Sandra Huller, Anatomy of a Fall, and Carey Mulligan, Maestro.

As Emma was walking on stage she signaled that there was something wrong with her dress as she quickly acknowledged it during her emotional acceptance speech.

She said: ‘Oh, boy. My dress is broken. I think it happened during I’m Just Ken. I’m pretty sure. Oh, boy, this is really — this is really overwhelming. Sorry, I’m — okay, my voice is also a little gone. Whatever.’

Da’Vine Joy Randolph emotionally kicked off the Oscars as she broke into tears as she earned the coveted Actress in a Supporting Role for The Holdovers.

The talented 37-year-old actress beat out stiff competition including Emily Blunt, Oppenheimer, Danielle Brooks, The Color Purple, America Ferrera, Barbie, and Jodie Foster, Nyad.

Some of the best and brightest of Hollywood jumped at the chance to let their hair down as they headed to the star-studded Vanity Fair Oscar Party on Sunday.

After a night that saw Oppenheimer come out on top with seven wins, stars including Billie Eilish, Mark Ronson and even Kim Kardashian headed to the Wallis Annenberg Centre for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills.

Billie Eilish proudly posed with her gong in hand after winning Best Original Song for What Was I Made For? from Barbie.

The hitmaker couldn’t hide her beaming smile as she showed off the latest addition to her awards collection.

Director Steven Spielberg opted to shun the swanky dinner on offer for stars at the party, instead tucking into an In-N-Out burger.

While the Indiana Jones frontman did not receive any nominations at this year’s Oscars, he did act as a producer for the acclaimed musical The Colour Purple.

After taking to the stage with Ryan Gosling for his viral performance of I’m Just Ken, Mark Ronson attended the party with his wife Grace Gummer.

The loved-up pair didn’t shy away from packing on the PDA as they shared a cheeky kiss following their arrival at the party.

Ronson and Gummer began their relationship in 2020, and they became engaged the following May.

The producer was previously married to Josephine de La Baume from 2011 until 2018, and he was also formerly engaged to Rashida Jones.

The actress previously tied the knot with Tay Strathairn in 2019, although they filed for divorce just over a month after their wedding ceremony.

Mark and Grace eventually moved on with each other, and they tied the knot in August of 2021.

He continued: ‘Here’s my little secret. I needed this job more than it needed me. Chris knew it, Emma made sure that she surrounded me with one of the great casts and crews of all time, Emily, Cillian, it was fantastic.

‘And I stand here before you a better man because of it. What we do is meaningful, and the stuff that we decide to make is important. So, back to my publicist — my agent, Phillip Raskin is here and Andrew Dunlap, my den mother joy Feeley, thank you.

‘I want to thank my stylist, in case no one else does. Thanks, Erika, thank you very much. And I’m just going to say this. My entertainment lawyer Tom Hanson, or 40 years, the half of which he spent trying to get me insured and bailing me out, thanks, bro. Avery in India, this one’s for you.’

One noticeable omission from his acceptance speech was Mel Gibson who he has previously credited with his comeback when he helped him land a role in 2003’s The Singing Detective.

Gibson’s, now 68, fall from grace began in 2006, when the actor was pulled over for speeding. After the police on the scene found an open bottle of alcohol in Gibson’s vehicle, the Braveheart actor launched into an angry tirade filled with anti-Semitic slurs and sexist overtones towards the arresting officer.

In a police report leaked by TMZ, Gibson allegedly shouted to the arresting officers: ‘“F*****g Jews. . . The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.’

Gibson issued apologies through his publicist and in an interview with Diane Sawyer, during which he described his behavior on the night of his arrest as ‘despicable.’

The actor/director later pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor drunken-driving charge and was sentenced to three years probation.

It may not have been a wise decision to thank Gibson who famously used those anti-Semitic  slurs as Oppenheimer follows the story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the development of the atomic bomb which was used during World War II amid the Holocaust.

In Oppenheimer Downey Jr. portrays as Rear Admiral Lewis Strauss, a retired Naval officer and high-ranking member of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC).

Earlier in the evening, Jimmy Kimmel roasted Robert’s manhood and past drug use in his bombshell opening monologue.

The host, 56, returning for the fourth time, left the A-listers grinning and cringing in equal measure as he took to the stage.

Oppenheimer won seven awards in total including Best Picture and Original Score for Ludwig Göransson (pictured Al Pacino Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven)

Downey was stony-faced as Kimmel made a crass joke at the start of the ceremony – referring to the reformed coke addict’s past addictions.

Downey Jr. had previously spent time behind bars in 1999 after a long period of substance abuse which stifled his career.

He added: ’20 years ago, Robert played the villain, and correct me if I have this wrong, in a movie where Tim Allen turns into a dog, right? And if you ever decide to remake that film, I have just the guy to play Tim Allen.

The actor’s legal troubles began in 1996 when he was stopped for speeding and authorities found of heroin, cocaine and an unloaded .357 caliber Magnum. A year later, he skipped a court-ordered drug test and spent nearly four months in the Los Angeles County jail.

Following this, he then skipped another drug test and was sentenced to three years of prison in 1999. During this time, Downey Jr. served 15 months in state prison in Corcoran, California.

A few months after his release, he was arrested on Thanksgiving weekend for alleged cocaine and Valium possession and being under the influence of drugs.

The valium charge was eventually reduced to a misdemeanor, he pleaded no contest to the remaining charges and avoided more jail time.

In 2001, he was found walking bare foot around Culver City, Los Angeles, and was arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of drugs.

Following year of substance abuse, arrests, rehabs and relapse, Downey made a full recovery and has since gone on to achieve global recognition.

The Oscars was Oppenheimer’s night as Cillian Murphy won the Best Actor award after being nominated for an Academy Award for the first time in his career as he triumphed over Bradley Cooper, Maestro, Colman Domingo, Rustin, Paul Giamatti, The Holdovers, and Jeffrey Wright, American Fiction.

He kept his acceptance speech short and sweet as he said: ‘ Oh. I’m a little overwhelmed. Thank you to the academy. Um — Chris Nolan and Emma Thomas, it’s been the wildest, most exhilarating, most creatively satisfying journey you’ve taken me on over the last 20 years, I owe you more than I can say. Thank you so much.

‘Every single crew member, every single cast member on Oppenheimer, you guys carried me through.

‘All my fellow nominees, I remain in awe of you guys. I want to thank my incredible team. Brendan Murphy, Mary Murphy, my two boys who are sitting up there, I love you so much, and I’m a very proud Irishman standing here tonight, so — [ applause ] You know, we made a film — we made a film about the man who created the atomic bomb, and for better or for worse, we’re all living in Oppenheimer’s world, so, I would like to dedicate this to the peacemakers everywhere.

The talented star played the titular role of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer as the film is centered around his involvement in the development of the atomic bomb.

Oppenheimer won seven awards in total – as well as Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, and Best Picture,  it won Original Score for Ludwig Göransson – along with cinematography and achievement in film editing.

Al Pacino announced Oppenheimer as the Best Picture winner without bothering to name all the other nominees

The 83-year-old Scarface star hit the stage and made an awkward joke about performing Shakespeare before jumping straight to announcing the Best Picture winner.

He said: ‘Wow. What — thank you. Oh, my friends. Thank you, thank you. I don’t know. Should I do some Shakespeare now? That’s in order, right? To be — no, I’m not going to do Sorry. Well, this is the time for the last award of the evening. And it’s my honor to present it.

‘Ten wonderful films are nominated, but only one will take the award for best picture. And I have to go to the envelope for that. And I will. Here it comes. And my eyes see Oppenheimer, yes!’

Nolan beat out Jonathan Glazer of The Zone of Interest, Yorgos Lanthimos of Poor Things, Martin Scorsese of Killers of the Flower Moon and Justine Triet of Anatomy of a Fall.

Nolan said: ‘We don’t know where this incredible journey is going from here. But to know that you think I am a meaningful part of it means the world to me.’

After the two films were released on the same day – July 21 – Barbenheimer gripped film fans who made an event out of going directly from the screening of one to the other.

Barbie was the highest-grossing movie of the year on both the domestic ($636.2 million) and worldwide ($1.445 billion) box office charts.

Oppenhimer took fifth place ($326.1 million) on the domestic box office charts and third place ($957.8 million) on the worldwide charts.

Michael Keaton and Catherine O’Hara were able to enjoy a Beetlejuice reunion as they both presented at the 96th Annual Academy Awards in Hollywood on Sunday.

The Batman actor, 72, and Home Alone star, 70, notably appeared in the beloved, comedy horror 36 years earlier – when the film premiered in theaters back in 1988.

The pair had the chance to join other celebrities during Hollywood’s biggest night, such as Billie Eilish and Margot Robbie.

Keaton and O’Hara took to the stage to present two Oscars: Best Makeup and Styling as well as Best Production Design – and both went to Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things.

Shortly before the awards were presented, Michael and Catherine were introduced to the audience, and once the curtain lifted, the Birdman actor humorously ran up towards the microphone.

However, O’Hara jokingly paused and called after Keaton – who ran back towards the actress and grabbed her hand, leading the star to the microphone.

Catherine began, ‘We actors can’t imagine a world without makeup, hairstyling, and production design. Oh no, no. The last thing we want is anyone know what we really look like. Or the squalor in which we actually live.’

Michael chimed in to add, ‘You know, on almost every new job, an immediate intimacy with the good people in the makeup and hair trailer…’

‘You meet them to discuss the character’s look, and before you know it, they’re plucking your nose hairs.’

‘Or rubbing foundation into your cleavage,’ O’Hara replied, causing Keaton to joke, ‘Or spackling the 11 holes in your skull from the teenage mishap with a nail gun.’

The actress then humorously responded with, ‘Oh, if I had a nickel!’ Afterwards, the stars posed backstage together with winners James Price and Shona Heath for Best Production Design.

The pair’s reunion comes 36 years after their film, Beetlejuice, hit theaters in 1998 – which also starred Winona Ryder, Geena Davis, Jeffrey Jones and Alec Baldwin.

At the 61st Academy Awards which were held in March 1989, the movie notably won an Oscar for Best Makeup.

While attending Sunday’s ceremony, Catherine put on a glamorous display wearing a figure-hugging, black sequin gown that clung to her frame.

She added a sparkling, diamond necklace as well as matching earrings that offered a flashy flare to the ensemble.

Keaton was also dapper for the special evening and sported a classic, black tuxedo along with a white dress shirt and black bowtie.

A sequel for Beetlejuice is also slated to hit theaters later this year in September, and not only will see Michael, Catherine and Winona Ryder together on screen again but also other stars including: Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe and Monica Bellucci.

Earlier this year in January, the Schitt’s Creek actress talked about having the chance to work alongside Michael once again in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

‘I had a little two-person moment with Michael as Beetlejuice. I’d been in the first movie in group scenes with Michael, but in this, I had an actual moment where the two of us just,’ she told People.

‘And it was just so crazy and thrilling, really to just be face-to-face with Beetlejuice. He looks the same. Beetlejuice has aged very well.’

The pair's reunion comes 36 years after their film, Beetlejuice, hit theaters in 1998 - which also starred Winona Ryder, Geena Davis, Jeffrey Jones and Alec Baldwin

Keaton also told the outlet last month in February that a sequel to the 1988 film had been in talks with director Tim Burton for a long time.

‘We thought, “You got to get this right. Otherwise, just don’t do it. Let’s just go on with our lives and do other things,” the actor revealed.

‘So I was hesitant and cautious, and he was probably equally as hesitant and cautious over all these years. Once we arrived, I said, “Okay, let’s just go for it. Let’s just see if we can do it, if we can pull this off.”‘

Earlier this week while appearing on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show, Michael gave another update on the sequel and stated that he has already watched some of the upcoming film.

He said that the project, ‘is beautiful, physically. The other one was so fun and exciting visually, it’s all that but really beautiful and interestingly emotional here and there. I wasn’t ready for that. It’s great.’

‘It’s just so fun and I’ve seen it now. I’m going to see it again after a couple of little tweaks in the editing room, and I confidently say this thing is great.’

Michael also had to watch the original movie before reprising his character of Beetlejuice. ‘I probably only really seen it from the beginning once or twice maybe.’

‘So I hadn’t seen it for a long, long, long time so I did go back and look at it again,’ he continued.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will premiere in theaters later this year on September 6.

While Leap Day may not hold much significance for most of us, it is a crucial day for anyone born on February 29, whose birthday technically only happens once every four years.

People born on February 29 must decide whether to celebrate their birthday on February 28 or March 1 – although it is often joked that Leap Day babies are technically a quarter their own age.

It’s not unheard of for celebrities to shave a few years off their age to look younger, but leap year babies may jokingly claim that they’re doing it legitimately.

So who are the famous faces born on February 29 and what is their leap year age compared to the actual number of years they have been on this planet?

Rap artist Ja Rule, real name Jeffrey Atkins, turns 48 today, but his leap year age would be 12.

Yes Rule

American rapper Ja Rule was born on February 29, 1976.

In 2016, Ja Rule joked about his age as he turned 40 during the launch of his show in Las Vegas, writing on Instagram at the time: ‘My @foxtailatsls residency kick [sic] of madness [sic] my 10th birthday party lol.”

It comes after the rap icon revealed yesterday that he was banned from entering Britain days before the start of his near-sell-out tour due to his criminal record.

Ferran Torres

Ferran Torres Garcia was born on 29 February 2000 and is a Spanish professional footballer who plays as a forward for La Liga club Barcelona and the Spanish national football team.

The Barcelona forward turns 24 today, but as a leap year baby he has only been able to celebrate his birthday every four years, which technically makes him seven years old.

It comes as Ilia Topuria has been promised Spanish citizenship after a meeting with the country’s prime minister on Tuesday.

Earlier this month, the 27-year-old became the first Spanish champion in UFC history following his stunning KO win over Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 298.

Once considered an essential men’s accessory for work and formal occasions, the classic business tie seems to have gone out of fashion in the office.

But now the garment and all its traditional variants – including the ascot, bow, bolo, zipper, tie and knit – are making a comeback in an unexpected form.

The 2024 Grammy Awards were flooded with fashionable A-listers who chose it as their statement accessory, from band Boygenius who paired a white suit and black tie to Billie Eilish who paired hers with a Barbie jacket.

In fact, the 22-year-old singer loved the tie so much that she wore it again two weeks later to the SAG Awards on Saturday, pairing it with black loose-fitting pants and a white shirt that was partially left loose toward the show. the bottom.

Even Kim Kardashian confirmed the tie’s new style status on the cover of GQ’s 2023 Men of the Year issue, eating a bag of Cheetos with her office-style ensemble.

Billie Eilish, pictured, leads the tie renaissance by wearing it to the SAG Awards on Saturday

Fashion company Ssense has even gone so far as to call 2024 the ‘year of the tie’ in light of the latest trend.

Speaking to FEMAIL, stylist Lisa Talbot revealed that the fashion world is embracing the tie as ‘worn by women as an alternative to a scarf or necklace and by men in a more relaxed way’.

“Women’s tailoring is a huge trend for SS24, and both the waistcoat and tie trends have been incorporated to complete the outfit,” she added.

‘I really like how it adds a slightly masculine touch to the look and can be worn in a very sleek, conservative way or incorporated into a creative look, including print and colour.

‘We’ve seen Prada and Hilfiger really embrace this trend and many were recently seen at the Baftas.

‘The model Sabrina Dhowre Elba arrived at the Gucci show during Milan Fashion Week in a simple white shirt, accompanied by a red skirt, leather tie and blazer, while Jenna Ortega looked beautiful in black tailoring, white shirt and a tie. ‘

Meanwhile, the film’s newest leading man, Barry Keoghan, looked chic at this year’s BAFTAs in a tie-belt outfit and a jacket adorned with sharp zippers, while Last Of Us’ Bella Ramsey looked cool in a floral suit combo and tie at the Critics Choice Awards in January.

Elsewhere, Rosamund Pike channeled effortless chic when she opted for the bow tie look in December, once again bringing office wear to the red carpet.

And the tie isn’t just becoming popular among the world’s celebrities: New York Fashion Week was filled with ties on the catwalk and in the audience.

‘Dressing up is back. We’re moving away from streetwear and going for a more polished look. It’s in the air, I can feel it,” Tommy Hilfiger said during his show at NYFW.

At the Prada menswear show in January, most models also wore ties, while Depop claims tie sales increased by 31 percent.

But conversely, ties are becoming less worn in offices due to the rise of working from home – and the trends for smart/casual business wear in place of traditional clothing.

Even the BBC is now embracing a more relaxed dress code, stating that reporters can now ditch their formal appearance.

Last year, New Financial’s William Wright shocked social media when he shared a photo of Selfridge’s depleted tie selection on sale.

Wright, using the Twitter handle @Williamw1 shared the photo after a visit to Selfridges department store, writing: ‘This is the entire tie department at Selfridges in London. The end of days is near.’

The photo showed one rack filled with a selection of colored ties in blue, green, pink and purple. A pair of striped ties and a statement Versace-style barocco tie also complete the mix.

It’s also been more than a decade since Tie Rack, which at its peak had 450 outlets, closed its doors.

Tie Rack’s miniature stores have become a fixture at train stations and airports since they were founded in 1981 by heel bar owner Roy Bishko.

The explosion of office jobs in the City of London’s financial district helped the company grow rapidly, reaching a peak of 450 stores in 1998.

But competition from internet retailers, combined with high costs, had a heavy impact on sales – and the increasing trend for casual office wear proved to be the death knell for the store.

The 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards saw the best and biggest names in film and television descend upon the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles on Saturday.

The gathering may not have been able to be a reality months ago after a taxing 118-day strike, with came to an end on November 8.

Lily Gladstone upset A-listers Emma Stone and Margot Robbie while Oppenheimer triumphed in most of the major film categories at the 30th annual SAG Awards.

Cillian Murphy earned the Male Actor in a Leading Role gong while Robert Downey Jr. took home Male Actor in a Supporting Role.

Yet it wasn’t just the winners that made the headlines as there were plenty of emotional, hilarious, and incredible moments on stage as the stars celebrated the best films and television programmes of 2023.

Now MailOnline takes a look back at the top viral moments of the SAG Awards 2024.

Pedro Pascal reveals he’s drunk on stage

Pedro Pascal was shocked – and a bit tipsy – when he won big at the 30th annual SAG Awards.

The star, 48, took home Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series for his role in The Last Of Us.

No doubt it was a total upset as he beat out three Succession actors including Kieran Culkin , Brian Cox, and Matthew Macfadyen who have all swept Award Season. Billy Crudup was also nominated for The Morning Show.

The Mandalorian star – who had been quaffing tequila – was just as surprised by the result as he said: ‘This is wrong, for a number of reasons. I’m a little drunk. I thought I could get drunk.’

‘I’m making a fool of myself but thank you so much for this! I’ve been in the union since 1999 so this is an incredible f*****g honor’, he continued. ‘To the nominees, all of you, I can’t remember any of your names right now.’

Pascal fought back tears thanking his family but swiftly ended his tipsy acceptance speech by joking: ‘I’m going to have a panic attack and I’m going to leave.’

After the win, Pedro told Tan France : ‘I don’t remember what I said. I just was very surprised. … Let’s YouTube it later.’

He also said he was going to make out with Keiran Culkan as his revenge against the actor following their hilarious fake feud at the Emmys, where Kiera said ‘Suck it, Pedro’ while accepting his gong.

‘He is the greatest,’ Pascal added.

Billie Eilish signs Melissa McCarthy’s face

Billie Eilish and Melissa McCarthy had a celebrity encounter that went hilariously wrong at the 2024 SAG Awards ceremony on Saturday.

After Melissa gushed about how big of a fan she was of Billie’s, the 22-year-old singer–songwriter scrawled her autograph all over the 53-year-old actress’ forehead.

The moment had viewers at home who caught the ceremony on Netflix laughing about the shocking moment, which inspired social media users to joke about Melissa’s performance as a Billie Eilish superfan.

She even revealed that she had worked with Billie’s mother – actress, teacher and musician Maggie Baird – as her improv coach when she was pregnant with the future hitmaker.

Melissa was clearly overjoyed to be sharing the stage with Billie and begged the singer to sign her dress.

‘No, I don’t want to ruin it,’ Billie replied, but the actress took it as a compliment.

‘Thank you for liking my choices,’ Melissa said. Instead, she asked Billie to sign her face, which got an enthusiastic response from her.

‘Oh, OK. I thought you were going to be like, “I don’t want to ruin your pretty face,”‘ Melissa joked.

‘I don’t care,’ Billie mumbled as she leaned in to scrawl her autograph over Melissa forehead, while hilariously putting a hand over her mouth to stop her from talking.

Some people hilariously compared the display to when Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) got a mustache and goatee drawn on her face on Friends.

‘Billie Eilish signing Melissa McCarthy’s face is the funniest thing I’ve seen in 5 decades of awards show fandom,’ gushed one user.

Devil Wears Prada reunion

The Devil Wears Prada cast members Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt thrilled fans as they reunited onstage.

The trio were tasked with presenting the best actor in a comedy series with Streep, 74, appearing on stage first by herself, telling the crowd she had forgotten her glasses and the envelope with this year’s winner.

Hathaway, 41, and Blunt, 41, then appeared and handed Streep her missing items, recreating their iconic roles as assistants to Miranda Priestly (Streep) in The Devil Wears Prada, which aired in 2006.

Streep then began presenting the award, as she asked: ‘It’s an age-old question, where does the character end, and the actor begin?’

‘Meryl and Miranda Priestly are sort of like twins,’ Blunt quipped, which Streep quickly began denying.

‘I don’t think I’m anything like Miranda Priestly!’

‘No no. That wasn’t a question,’ Hathaway hilariously interrupted her, with a nod to one of Miranda’s most cutting lines from the film.

While Streep was trying to open the envelope Blunt quoted her character one more time, telling her: ‘By all means move at a glacial pace, you know how that thrills me.

‘It’s been almost 18-years since The Devil Wears Prada — based on the 2003 New York Times bestseller by Lauren Weisberger written about her experience as an assistant to longtime Vogue editor Anna Wintour — aired.

Idris Elba swears in front of Oprah Winfrey

Idris Elba was the first presenter of the night on stage at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

During his speech, the actor, 51, said the F-word and told the nominees that they’re allowed to swear while accepting awards thanks to the show streaming on Netflix instead of airing on television.

However, Idris told people to control themselves and joked to not say anything that they wouldn’t say in front of Oprah .

The camera then panned down to the chat show legend, before Idris cried: ‘F***! That was Oprah.’

It came just moments after Hannah Waddingham had to usher Idris out of her seat in a hilarious opening segment.

Tan France ‘awkwardly’ flirts with Pedro Pascal

Tan France has been roasted for his ‘awkward’ backstage flirting with Pedro Pascal.

The Last of Us actor, 48, joined France, 40, who was conducting interviews with the winners, after he picked up the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series award, for his role in the HBO zombie show.

After the Chilean hunk complimented the Queer Eye star’s silver hair, France responded by saying, We are not here to flirt with me, Pedro Pascal.’

‘Yes we are. What else could we be here for?’ Pascal — who shortly before shared that he was drunk while onstage — replied.

France then asked, ‘How badly are you going to rag Kieran at the afterparty tonight?’ in reference to Pascal and Succession star Kieran Culkin ‘s ongoing rivalry at award shows, but Pascal simply replied that he would ‘make out’ with Culkin instead.

‘That’ll be my revenge,’ the Mandalorian star added.

‘It’s cause you’re drunk,’ France stated, summing up the situation. ‘I would love to see this, that would make me so happy,’ he went on.

Fans quickly took to the comments to discuss the ‘awkward’ interview, with one writing, ‘Can someone tell Tan France these are the #SAGAwards and not Grindr. Bring back the commercials.’

‘These Tan France interviews are actually inflicting massive amount of psychic damage. Please stop @Netflix,’ another user asked.

‘I’m enjoying the #SAG Awards on Netflix – but the weird Tan France interviews are so awkward & uncomfortable. This is not his jam.’

Modern Family cast reunion

The star-studded 30th Annual SAG Awards proved to be a night full of reunions.

Among them was the cast of Modern Family, who got together four years after their show ended to present the prize for best comedy ensemble to the stars of The Bear.

Sofia Vergara, 51, sizzled in a red hot gown as she joined former co-stars Ed O’Neill, 77, Ty Burrell , 56, Julie Bowen , 53, Eric Stonestreet, 52, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, 48, onstage.

At one point Vergara plugged her new Netflix series Griselda, but got scolded as Stonestreet quipped, ‘Jesse, pay up. I told you she’d mention it in the first 10 seconds.’

Meanwhile her co-star Julie had a hilarious moment of her own as she got distracted by Barbie star Ryan Gosling in the audience.

It all started while they were presenting the award, which their ABC show won four previous times, and Burrell reflected on their series, saying, ‘This really brings back memories.’

‘You guys ever miss it?’ Burrell asked his former costars.

His on-screen daughter Bowen replied: ‘Oh, hell yeah, but of course we had a great time, 11 seasons, 250 episodes. Come on.’

She then got distracted by Gosling, as she giggled and pointed at him in the crowd: ‘It’s Ryan Gosling . I’m sorry,’ before catching her train of thought, ‘250 episodes, it never happens.’

‘It’s happened twice to me,’ replied O’Neill, who starred as Al Bundy on the 1987-97 Fox comedy Married…With Children.
