How the traditional tie is making a fashion comeback as the most popular red carpet accessory worn by Kim Kardashian, Billie Eilish and Barry Keoghan

Once considered an essential men’s accessory for work and formal occasions, the classic business tie seems to have gone out of fashion in the office.

But now the garment and all its traditional variants – including the ascot, bow, bolo, zipper, tie and knit – are making a comeback in an unexpected form.

The 2024 Grammy Awards were flooded with fashionable A-listers who chose it as their statement accessory, from band Boygenius who paired a white suit and black tie to Billie Eilish who paired hers with a Barbie jacket.

In fact, the 22-year-old singer loved the tie so much that she wore it again two weeks later to the SAG Awards on Saturday, pairing it with black loose-fitting pants and a white shirt that was partially left loose toward the show. the bottom.

Even Kim Kardashian confirmed the tie’s new style status on the cover of GQ’s 2023 Men of the Year issue, eating a bag of Cheetos with her office-style ensemble.

Fashion company Ssense has even gone so far as to call 2024 the ‘year of the tie’ in light of the latest trend.

Speaking to FEMAIL, stylist Lisa Talbot revealed that the fashion world is embracing the tie as ‘worn by women as an alternative to a scarf or necklace and by men in a more relaxed way’.

“Women’s tailoring is a huge trend for SS24, and both the waistcoat and tie trends have been incorporated to complete the outfit,” she added.

‘I really like how it adds a slightly masculine touch to the look and can be worn in a very sleek, conservative way or incorporated into a creative look, including print and colour.

‘We’ve seen Prada and Hilfiger really embrace this trend and many were recently seen at the Baftas.

‘The model Sabrina Dhowre Elba arrived at the Gucci show during Milan Fashion Week in a simple white shirt, accompanied by a red skirt, leather tie and blazer, while Jenna Ortega looked beautiful in black tailoring, white shirt and a tie. ‘

Meanwhile, the film’s newest leading man, Barry Keoghan, looked chic at this year’s BAFTAs in a tie-belt outfit and a jacket adorned with sharp zippers, while Last Of Us’ Bella Ramsey looked cool in a floral suit combo and tie at the Critics Choice Awards in January.

Elsewhere, Rosamund Pike channeled effortless chic when she opted for the bow tie look in December, once again bringing office wear to the red carpet.

And the tie isn’t just becoming popular among the world’s celebrities: New York Fashion Week was filled with ties on the catwalk and in the audience.

‘Dressing up is back. We’re moving away from streetwear and going for a more polished look. It’s in the air, I can feel it,” Tommy Hilfiger said during his show at NYFW.

At the Prada menswear show in January, most models also wore ties, while Depop claims tie sales increased by 31 percent.

But conversely, ties are becoming less worn in offices due to the rise of working from home – and the trends for smart/casual business wear in place of traditional clothing.

Even the BBC is now embracing a more relaxed dress code, stating that reporters can now ditch their formal appearance.

Last year, New Financial’s William Wright shocked social media when he shared a photo of Selfridge’s depleted tie selection on sale.

Wright, using the Twitter handle @Williamw1 shared the photo after a visit to Selfridges department store, writing: ‘This is the entire tie department at Selfridges in London. The end of days is near.’

The photo showed one rack filled with a selection of colored ties in blue, green, pink and purple. A pair of striped ties and a statement Versace-style barocco tie also complete the mix.

It’s also been more than a decade since Tie Rack, which at its peak had 450 outlets, closed its doors.

Tie Rack’s miniature stores have become a fixture at train stations and airports since they were founded in 1981 by heel bar owner Roy Bishko.

The explosion of office jobs in the City of London’s financial district helped the company grow rapidly, reaching a peak of 450 stores in 1998.

But competition from internet retailers, combined with high costs, had a heavy impact on sales – and the increasing trend for casual office wear proved to be the death knell for the store.
