In the previous Lok Sabha polls, the TMC won 22 seats, while the BJP pulled off a major surprise and won 18 seats.

New Delhi: The Congress party held a meeting of its Central Election Commission on Tuesday. The Congress has finalized the names of candidates for 12 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal, news agency ANI quoted sources as saying. “Discussions took place for Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and West Bengal by the screening committee,” Congress leader Jaivardhan Singh said.

Congress has already announced candidates for 82 Lok Sabha seats. In the first list, the party listed the names of 39 candidates, while in the second list, the names of 43 candidates were announced.

Voting will take place in all seven phases for the Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal.

The Trinamool Congress has already announced its candidates for all the 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal. In the previous Lok Sabha polls, the TMC won 22 seats, while the BJP pulled off a major surprise and won 18 seats.

Earlier today, the Congress working committee held a detailed discussion on the manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections, which puts a heavy push on the party’s ‘nyay’ agenda and allows party chief Mallikarjun Kharge to give it a final approval.

Addressing a press conference after the CWC meeting, Congress leaders KC Venugopal and Jairam Ramesh said the party will build on the momentum of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, in which the party announced five guarantees and a plan has been drawn up to take the message of guarantees at the grassroots level.

“The meeting we had today was not just for our manifesto but for our ‘nyay patra’. The Congress is absolutely ready for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Today’s meeting included discussions about our agenda. In the last 63 days, Rahul Gandhi has spoken about our five Nyay and announced 25 guarantees. This is not just a simple manifesto but an important ‘nyay patra’ so that the people of our country can see a better future,” he said.

The meeting of the CWC, the party’s highest decision-making body, took place days after the announcement of the schedule for the Lok Sabha elections. The Lok Sabha polls and assembly elections in four states will be held from April 19 to June 1 and the results will be declared on June 4.

It’s the movie role that can transform unknown actors into global megastars – and now the British have had their say on who they want to be the next James Bond.

Thousands of Bond fans have cast their votes on who they want to replace Daniel Craig in the spy film franchise.

And topping the list is Luther star Idris Elba, who was the overwhelming favorite to perform after a survey of 2,000 Britons.

In the poll, commissioned by Lottoland, the 51-year-old beat the likes of Venom star Tom Hardy, Superman’s Henry Cavill and Oscar-winning man with the golden gong, Cillian Murphy, for the prized role.

Among the other top 20 A-listers who suggested they might be in the running were some left-wing stars such as House of the Dragons’ Emilia Clarke, James Norton, Emily Blunt and Helen Mirren. The sun revealed.

Bond is known for turning those who play 007 into global superstars.

And the franchise isn’t shy about casting stars out of left field to take on the role. The late Sean Connery, one of the most recognizable Bonds, had only appeared in a series of TV films when he accepted the role of a British spy in 1962’s Dr. No, with which he achieved international fame.

But while Idris was the first choice, fans may be left disappointed after the actor ruled himself out of playing the role last year so he could focus on his deal with Netflix, where he is starring in Luther: The Fallen Sun.

Idris brought up the ongoing discussions about the takeover of Ian Fleming’s famous British spy in February 2023.

When asked about the Luther film at the World Government Summit in Dubai, he said: “It’s very dark.

‘We’ve been working on the television show for about ten years and so the natural ambition is to bring it to the big screen, and so here we are with the first film.

“You know, a lot of people talk about another character that starts with J and ends with B, but I’m not going to be that guy.

‘I will be John Luther. That’s who I am.’

In August 2022, it was reported that Idris had left ‘years of talks’ with film bosses to take over the famous role.

He was the bookies’ favorite to replace Daniel Craig as super spy, but is keen to pursue other roles – and has even submitted a proposed list to producer Barbara Broccoli of actors who would play 007.

A source said The sun: ‘Fans and Barbara wanted Idris, but he wants to create something for himself.

“However, he has put forward names to play 007. He is ‘informally’ involved in the decision-making process, because he has been in discussions with producers for so long.’

MailOnline contacted representatives of Idris and James Bond producers at the time.

At the premiere of his film The Harder They Fall in 2021, when asked if he is considered the next 007, Idris said: ‘No, I’m not going to be James Bond.’

He told it too The Express about the rumors: “I’m probably the most famous Bond actor in the world, and I didn’t even play the part.”

Idris then added: “Enough is enough. I can’t talk about it anymore.’

Despite this, Ladbrokes awarded the actor a 3/1 for taking on the role after Daniel announced that 2021’s No Time To Die would be his final appearance as the character.

The bookmakers said at the time: ‘We have seen a huge interest in Idris Elba and have reduced his odds accordingly, so much so that he is now the clear favorite in our view to replace Daniel Craig as 007.’

Tom Hardy at 5/1, Rege-Jean Page 4/1 and Richard Madden 20/1 were also rumored to be in the running.

James Bond producer Barbara previously admitted that it will take a long time to choose Craig’s 007 replacement.

The filmmaker emphasized that it’s not as simple as choosing an actor to take on the iconic role of the friendly spy.

Speaking to Variety, Barbara said: ‘It’s a big decision.

‘It’s not just playing a role. It’s about a whole rethink of where we’re going.”

Earlier that same year, the blockbuster franchise’s producer confirmed that Idris was “part of the conversation” to become the next 007.

She told Deadline’s Crew Call podcast, “Well, we know Idris, we’re friends with him, and he’s a great actor.”

“And you know, it’s been part of the conversation, but it’s always hard to have a conversation when there’s someone in the seat.”

Barbara added that Bond bosses are in no rush to name the actor as they wanted the cast and crew to enjoy Craig’s latest film No Time To Die.

She said: ‘I think we’ve decided that until No Time To Die has had its run and Daniel has been able to – well, we’ve all been able to enjoy and reap the benefits of Daniel’s wonderful tenure, we’re not going to doing. think of or talk about someone else.’

The producer also hinted at a reimagining of the franchise. explaining: ‘It’s a reinvention of Bond. We’re trying to figure out where to go with him, we’ll talk about that.”

However, she added that any casting announcements are still a ways off, saying, “We’re reinventing who he is and that takes time,” she continued. “There is no script and we can’t come up with one until we decide how to approach the next film.

“I’d say filming will take at least another two years.”

The BJP earlier released an initial list of 195 candidates on March 2, who will contest the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections and is likely to finalize candidates for the remaining seats.

The BJP Central Election Committee will meet today

New Delhi: The BJP’s Central Election Committee will meet at its headquarters in the national capital on Monday in a bid to stay ahead of its competitors before the impending Lok Sabha elections. According to ANI reports, the candidates for a few more Lok Sabha seats were likely to be decided during the meeting. The BJP’s National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners from Maharashtra, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Haryana and Bihar will also be present at the meeting. The report further stated that the allies are expected to discuss seat sharing with the party’s senior leadership.

Newly joined defectors in BJP

In the presence of party general secretary Tarun Chugh, four Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders and a Congress member joined the BJP in New Delhi earlier on Sunday. Former MPs Godam Nagesh and Sitaram Naik, along with former MLAs Saidhi Reddy and Jalagam Venkat Rao, were the four BRS defectors.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is running for a third consecutive term in the House of Representatives from Varanasi, topped the BJP’s initial list of 195 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, which were announced on March 2.

Prominent BJP candidates contesting LS polls

34 ministers from the Center and States make up the list of the 195 contenders, and two of them are former chief ministers. The National Democratic Party (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), won 303 seats in 2019, while the oldest party won only 52 seats. The Lok Sabha elections are expected to take place in April or May this year.

BJP’s strategic plan towards victory

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the BJP’s Central Election Commission remains steadfast in its commitment to ensure robust and inclusive representation across all constituencies. With a keen eye on optimizing its election strategy, the party wants to field candidates who embody its principles and resonate with the aspirations of the electorate.

The meeting is poised to witness high-level deliberations with senior party leaders devising a strategy to capitalize on the emerging electoral dynamics and capitalize on the organizational strength of the BJP. Candidate selection will be a carefully tailored process aimed at maximizing the party’s electoral footprint and leveraging its grassroots support.

Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP remains firmly focused on its mission to secure a resounding mandate, driven by its vision of inclusive development and transformative governance. Today’s deliberations of the Central Election Committee are expected to mark a crucial milestone in the party’s electoral roadmap, paving the way for a spirited and determined campaign in the coming days.

Three Republicans seeking to take on Sen. Sherrod Brown, Democrat of Ohio, in the fall took aim at each other during a debate Wednesday night as they tried to portray themselves as the most conservative candidate in a closely contested primary.

It is a rare Senate race in which an endorsement from former President Donald J. Trump has not cleared the Republican field.

Trump’s favored candidate, Bernie Moreno, a former car dealer from Cleveland, has repeatedly cast himself as an outsider as he touted his endorsements, including his support from Ohio’s other senator, J.D. Vance. Frank LaRose, Ohio’s secretary of state, has presented himself as a “battle-tested” candidate who has already won a statewide race. And Matt Dolan, a wealthy senator, has taken a more moderate path to promoting his support for “Trump policies” without explicitly backing Mr. Trump in the primaries.

The primary, on March 19, will lead to an expensive and closely watched clash with Mr. Brown in November. Republicans see the race as an excellent opportunity in the closely divided chamber.

The Republican primary candidates sparred for the third and final time at the debate, which was held in Oxford and hosted by Miami University and WLWT News 5. Here are five takeaways from the event and the broader race:

Republican primaries these days often revolve around which candidate praises Trump the most, and Ohio candidates appear well aware that he won their increasingly red state by eight percentage points in both 2016 and 2020.

Mr. Moreno highlighted moments of support for Mr. Trump in Wednesday’s debate, as he has done at previous forums, defending Mr. Trump’s recent comments about NATO and later assuring viewers that the former president was “a good man” .

His competitors tried their own approaches.

Mr. LaRose, who last year incorrectly predicted that Trump would stay out of the primaries, pointed to the former president’s support for him in his 2022 race for secretary of state. He said Wednesday that while “some people may not like his personality abrasive,” Mr. Trump “was the kind of bold, courageous leader we need.”

Even Mr. Dolan, who declined to endorse Mr. Trump in the primaries, repeatedly said he had “enacted Trump policies” in the Ohio Legislature, pointing to issues like school choice and tax cuts. On Wednesday, after Nikki Haley withdrew from the presidential race and almost assuredly allowed Mr. Trump to win the nomination, Mr. Dolan said he would “support” the former president.

But Mr. Dolan had some caveats: “His personality? It’s not me. His political style? It’s not me. But his policies that make your life better, make America stronger, make Ohio stronger – that’s me.”

Each of the candidates delved into their rivals’ past and recent comments Wednesday night in an effort to prove their conservative bona fides.

Each candidate suggested that voters should question the other candidates’ motives. They repeatedly bickered over each other’s records on gun control, immigration policy, abortion and support for Mr. Trump.

“Who do you trust?” Mr. LaRose said it bluntly in his opening statement. “You’ll hear a lot of talking points from both of my opponents tonight. They’re both desperate to convince you that they’re conservative.’

Moments later, Mr. Moreno played up his support for Trump by accusing his rivals of being part of the “Nikki Haley, Liz Cheney, Mitt Romney wing of the party,” a jab at Mr. Trump’s traditional conservatism trampled.

And Mr. Dolan accused his opponents of “reinventing themselves for their political interests,” a comment he has made repeatedly, often noting that they did not immediately support Trump’s first run for office in 2016.

Last fall, more than 56 percent of Ohioans voted to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution. Republicans have struggled to formulate a winning position on the issue, one that Senator Brown could focus on as all three of his would-be Republican opponents have expressed some support for a federal abortion ban.

The Republican candidates characterized Mr. Brown as taking an “extreme” position on the issue (although he has said he was). was against ‘late-term abortion’) and expressed support for policies such as adoption services and access to contraception. No one explicitly mentioned in vitro fertilization, an issue on which Republicans are on the defensive following a recent Alabama court ruling that frozen embryos should be considered human beings.

Mr. Moreno reiterated Wednesday that he would support efforts at the federal level to “get to a 15-week standard, with some common sense restrictions in place after 15 weeks.”

Mr. Dolan and Mr. LaRose avoided directly addressing a federal ban during the debate. But in January, they both indicated they would support a federal ban to prevent late-term abortions, language used by abortion opponents to describe rare abortions after 21 weeks of pregnancy.

Mr. Dolan, by contrast, said Wednesday that he supported exceptions for the “life of the mother, rape and incest” and suggested his position was better if he took on Mr. Brown.

“I more accurately reflect where Ohioans sit today,” Mr. Dolan said.

Mr. LaRose, meanwhile, pointed to an endorsement from the Ohio Right to Life PAC, which endorsed both him and Mr. Moreno, but he did not say Wednesday whether he would support exceptions to abortion restrictions.

Immigration, including the influx of migrants at the southern border, has done just that has become a top concern among voters across the country — and the issue has risen to the top of Ohio politics, too.

The candidates had several debates over who was toughest on immigration, even though their platforms are quite similar.

They all labeled border security as an urgent concern, called for increased immigration enforcement and said they would support completing the border wall that Trump promised and did not complete. No one voiced support for the bipartisan border deal in Congress, which collapsed after Trump intervened.

That didn’t stop them from shooting each other. Although Mr. LaRose and Mr. Moreno have both said they support the deportation of all undocumented immigrants, they traded attacks during a debate last month, highlighting past comments that they said showed the other man was weak on that proposal.

Mr. Dolan has argued that the border should first be “sealed,” halting immigration. He said the administration could then determine how to deal with undocumented immigrants already in the country, noting that Ohio businesses “need workers.”

During the January debate, Mr. Dolan also called out Mr. Moreno’s call for “wiping out the drug cartels” as an “irresponsible statement,” shortly after Mr. Moreno similarly said Mr. LaRose had used “irresponsible rhetoric” in support of the drug cartels. US drone strikes in Mexico.

All three Republicans have tried to link the popular Brown to President Biden, the unpopular incumbent.

This race marks Mr. Brown’s first run in a presidential year since the state put Republicans on top. The last time he stood next to a Democratic president was in 2012, when President Barack Obama won the state by three points.

But Mr. Biden’s approval ratings in Ohio are gloomyand the eventual Republican Senate nominee is expected to face this reality.

All three candidates simultaneously criticized “Biden and Brown” or “Brown and Biden,” whether discussing the border crisis, claiming they oppose American energy or criticizing their support for the Inflation Reduction Act.

But for now, much of their focus is on attacking each other, even on topics where there is little daylight between them.

PM Modi with Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal

Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday released the first list of 195 candidates for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. According to the list announced by the saffron camp, Rajya Sabha member and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will contest from Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat, replacing sitting BJP MP and Union Minister Rameswar Teli.

Besides Sonowal, the saffron party named ten other candidates from Assam for the general elections. The northeastern state has 14 Lok Sabha seats. Of the 11 BJP candidates in Assam, only four existing Lok Sabha members have been given tickets this time, while two others from Rajya Sabha will try their luck.

The remaining five, including a minister and an MLA, will contest the Lok Sabha elections for the first time. Sonowal, a former chief minister of Assam, is now a minister in Narendra Modi’s government and is considered trusted by the prime minister.

He was also a minister of state and held several portfolios before becoming the BJP’s first chief minister in 2016. Two-time MP Teli, the Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, was first elected to Lok Sabha in 2014.

He was also a two-time MLA. Teli is also the Minister of State for Labor and Employment. Sonowal, a former president of the influential All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), was an MLA (2001) and Lok Sabha MP (2004) from the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).

Sonowal joined the BJP in 2011. He is a three-time Assam MLA, two-time Lok Sabha member and one-time Rajya Sabha MP. Another Rajya Sabha member Kamakhya Prasad Tasa was nominated from Kaliabor, which has now become Kaziranga after the delimitation of constituencies.

The seat is currently represented by Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi. Tasa, a prominent member of the BJP’s tea tribe, was a member of Lok Sabha from 2014 to 2019. The LS polls will be the first elections in Assam after the Election Commission of India conducted the delimitation exercise in the state last year.

The delimitation exercise was strongly criticized by the opposition parties, alleging that it was done only to help the ruling BJP.

Lok Sabha elections 2024: The BJP on Saturday announced its first list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, naming candidates for 11 of the 14 seats in Jharkhand, including Union ministers Arjun Munda and Annapurna Devi, as well as former Congress MP Geeta Koda.

Munda and Annapurna Devi, both Union ministers in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet, will contest against Khunti ST and Koderma respectively.

Meanwhile, former Congress MP Geeta Koda, wife of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda, has been summoned from Singhbhum (ST). She had won the Singhbhum seat in 2019 on a Congress ticket by a margin of 72,155 votes, defeating BJP’s Laxman Gilua.

Here is the list of candidates announced by the BJP for Jharkhand:

  1. Rajmahal– Tala Marandi
  2. Dumka– Sunil Soren
  3. Godda– Nishikant Dubey
  4. Koderma– Annapurna Devi
  5. Ranchi– Sanjay Seth
  6. Jamshedpur– Vidyut Baran Mahato
  7. Singhbhum– Geeta Koda
  8. Khunti–Arjun Munda
  9. Lohardaga– Sameer Oraon
  10. Palamu– Vishnu Dayal Ram
  11. Hazaribagh– Manish Jaiswal

New candidates

Among the eleven names announced by the BJP, there are four new candidates including Geeta Koda, Rajya Sabha MP Samir Oraon, Tala Marandi and Manish Jaiswal.

The seven other candidates will stand for re-election from their respective constituencies, including Union ministers Arjun Munda (Khunti ST) and Annapurna Devi (Koderma).

BJP’s Hazaribag MLA Manish Jaiswal will replace incumbent party member Jayant Sinha from the Hazaribag Lok Sabha seat. Jaiswal won Hazaribag constituency in 2019 through Dr. Ramchandra Prasad from Congress.

Sinha, son of former Union minister Yashwant Sinha, said earlier in the day that he had asked party president JP Nadda to relieve him from direct election duties as he wanted to focus on “fighting climate change in Bharat”.

Stalwarts took part in important seats

The BJP has reposed faith in its Rajya Sabha MP from Jharkhand Samir Oraon, whose term ends on May 3, for the Lok Sabha polls. Oraon, who was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2018, has been taken over from the Lohardaga (ST) seat, replacing existing MP Sudarshan Bhagat, whose victory margin in the last polls was barely 10,363.

The saffron party fielded its former Jharkhand state president Tala Marandi from Rajmahal (ST) seat, which is currently occupied by JMM’s Vijay Hansdak.

In 2019, Hemlal Murmu of BJP had contested from the seat and lost to JMM. Marandi had won the Borio assembly seat in 2014 on a BJP ticket. In 2019, Marandi had joined the AJSU party after he was denied a ticket from the BJP. However, he lost to JMM’s Lobin Hembrom. Marandi returned to BJP again in 2022.

Union Minister Arjun Munda has been re-elected from Khunti (ST) seat, which he had won by a narrow margin of 1445 votes in 2019, defeating Congress’ Kalicharan Munda.

The Palamu (SC) seat will be contested by former Director General of Police Vishnu Dayal Ram, who won the seat by a margin of 4,77,606 votes during the last polls.

Union Minister Annapurna Devi, who is contesting on a JVM-P ticket from Koderma in 2019, will contest from the same seat. She defeated BJP president and former chief minister Babulal Marandi by a margin of 4,55,600 votes.

From the Ranchi seat, the party has fielded sitting MP Sanjay Seth, who had defeated Congress’ Subodh Kant Sahay by a margin of 2,82,780 votes.

From Jamshedpur, BJP MP Bidyut Baran Mahto was repeated. Mahto had defeated current Chief Minister Champai Soren in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls by 3,02,090 votes.

Dumka (ST) went to incumbent MP Sunil Soren, who defeated JMM president Shibu Soren in the 2019 polls by a margin of 47,590 votes, while incumbent MP Nishikant Dubey from Godda will contest. Dubey had defeated JVM-P’s Pradeep Yadav by 1,84,227 votes.
