A CAPSULE carrying a space-grown antiviral drug back to Earth has filmed its ‘spectacular’ re-entry into the atmosphere at 175,000mph.

The breathtaking clip shows exactly what it would look like to sit in the front seat of a capsule returning to Earth before a parachute-assisted landing.

Onlookers have described the recorded return as “Bizarrely spectacular” and called the dynamic range of the camera inside “wild”.

“From pure black space with visible stars to pointing directly at the sun, with no noticeable change in lighting. Bonkers,” says one YouTube user commented under the video.

The small W-1 capsule, built by Varda Space Industries, was launched into space aboard a SpaceX rocket in 2023 and landed back on Earth on February 21.

The capsule was on a Rocket Lab Photon spacecraft that was part of the SpaceX Transport-8 rideshare mission that launched 72 spacecraft into orbit last June.

Gravity is a kind of parameter. When you put a temperature knob on an oven, you open up a whole world of new recipes and new foods that you can create.

Varda CEO Will Bruey

Varda’s space capsule demonstrates an unexpected commercial market emerging in the space sector, known as “microgravity as a service.”

Materials and chemical reactions behave differently in microgravity compared to how they behave on Earth.

Companies like Varda can sell space in their capsules – and time in microgravity – to companies across a range of industries to manufacture new products in space.

In the capsule, Varda was able to grow crystals of a drug called ritonavir, which can be used to treat HIV and hepatitis C.

“We produce pharmaceutical products in space”, Varda CEO Will Bruey explained in an interview on Marktplaats.

‘By removing gravity, we can make medicines that you would otherwise not be able to make on Earth.

“Gravity is like a parameter. When you put a temperature knob on an oven, you create a whole world of new recipes and new foods that you can create.

“Similarly, if you can change gravity, you can also change the chemical process for drug formulations.”

The entire footage, from separation to touchdown, lasts 27 minutes.

While the five-minute clip shows the capsule leaving Low Earth Orbit (LEO), where the majority of today’s satellites are located.

At the end of the full video you can watch a pair of muddy legs retrieve the capsule and collect the parachute.

According to Varda, the capsule reached Mach 25, which meets NASA’s criteria for hypersonic speeds.

AirUp has launched three leak-proof bottles with a straw and a new mouthpiece for instant flavor activation – much to the delight of fans.

AirUp shot to fame last year with its unique bottles that can be filled with still or sparkling water, but trick the brain into thinking the contents are flavored, thanks to aroma pods.

And yesterday, the German company launched its latest Gen2 Tritan™ Renew Bottle in two new colors, Lavender Purple and Cobalt Blueberry, in addition to its signature Charcoal Gray shade.

They feature a new ActiveOn mouthpiece, which eliminates the need to manually activate the pod (unlike the original design) and prices range from £36.99 for a 600ml bottle to £46.99 for the 1 liter bottle.

The news immediately sent fans into a frenzy, with one commenting: 'I got my new bottle today and I was amazed at the results.'

While AirUp launched in Britain in 2021, its popularity reached new heights last year among gym-goers and students alike, with one teacher estimating he was bringing '£300' worth of bottles to class every day.

Announcing the new products on Instagram yesterday, AirUp wrote: 'The bottle that solves hydration and taste means you no longer have to make difficult decisions about choices that offer the best balance between health and taste – you can have both!'

The bottles are sold as bundles of three pods, which flavor 15 liters of water and last approximately 10 days (based on an average consumption of 1.5 liters per day).

While the aromas are produced in Germany, the bottles are made in Austria using 100 percent renewable energy – and the company plants a tree for every order.

The product can be filled with still or sparkling water, but tricks the brain into thinking that the contents are flavored, thanks to aroma pods.

How does retronasal odor work?

AirUp's scent capsules trick your brain into thinking the water is flavored, thanks to a concept known as retronasal scent.

AirUp explained: 'This is the technical term for a simple process: tasting with your nose.

'When you smell something, it travels through the throat to the olfactory center in the nose and manifests itself in the brain as taste. Simple. Genius. Mind blow.

'80 percent of the flavors you experience are actually things you smell. The tongue may talk, but it's the nose that does the talking when it comes to taste.'

The pods release scents through the nose as you sip, and pass down the throat to the brain, where they manifest as taste.

The pods are available in different flavors, including passion fruit, elderflower, coffee, virgin mojito and cola.

AirUp was founded by Lena Jungst and Tim Jager and arrived in the UK in 2021.

German entrepreneur Jungst says the bottles 'invite people to experiment a little with taste. It is a new way to perceive taste; nothing like this existed before.'

The product itself is widely praised by parents who struggle to get their children to drink water regularly (NHS guidelines suggest children should drink six to eight cups of water a day), as the taste encourages them to hydrate more.

A number of enthusiastic customers flocked to share their thoughts, with one pen writing: 'I bought one and I love mine', while another said: 'I'm getting the new blueberries'.

Elsewhere, one mother said the bottles are still popular with schoolchildren, saying: 'It's a must have among W's classmates.'

Fans who use the bottles at the gym also seemed delighted with the new launch, with one writing: 'Gym grind with AirUp all day'.

Meanwhile, the AirUp website has received hundreds of rave reviews from customers, with the bottles receiving an overall rating of 4.54.
