Abhijit Pandey, director of West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services, said the under-construction building collapsed in the wee hours of Monday.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal visited the spot and took stock of the rescue operation.

Calcutta: More than ten people were rescued in Kolkata late on Sunday evening after an under-construction building collapsed. According to the latest updates, the five-storey building collapsed in Hazari Mollah Bagan in the Garden Reach area in the early hours of Monday. The search is on for survivors trapped under the rubble.

West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services Director Abhijit Pandey said the under-construction building collapsed in the wee hours of Monday.

“A five-storey building (illegally constructed) collapsed at Hazari Mollah Bagan; Garden range; Metiabruz, KMC Ward No. 134,” West Bengal Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari posted from his X handle, adding that the particular area falls under Calcutta Mayor Firhad Hakim’s ‘citadel’.

Urging the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and Kolkata Police Commissioner to involve the West Bengal State Disaster Management Team in the ongoing rescue and relief operation, Adhikari said: “I am receiving panicked calls about possible casualties. Please send any team that can help rescue the victims, be it firefighters, police or any other team.”

In the meantime, Calcutta Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal visited the spot and took stock of the rescue operation.

“Late on Sunday evening, a building under construction in the Garden Reach area collapsed. We saved a few people. The disengagement operation is still ongoing,” a police official said.

In a post on salvation and help.” “I get panicky phone calls about possible victims. Please send any team that can help in rescuing the victims, be it firefighters, police or any other team,” he said.

According to locals who were the first responders, chunks of concrete fell from the building before it collapsed. There was a loud noise and a thick cloud of dust engulfed the area as the building collapsed. The debris fell on nearby slums in the densely populated area, they said.

“Although no one lived in the under-construction building, it collapsed onto the adjacent slums. We fear that many people are still trapped under the rubble,” said a local resident.

A desperate rescue mission is underway for two people trapped underground after a mine collapse.

Emergency services are responding to reports of two people trapped in the Ballarat gold mine at Mount Clear, Ballarat, after it collapsed around 4.50pm on Wednesday.

Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) and the Country Fire Authority have both sent “resources” to the scene, an FRV spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia.

Ambulance Victoria also sent paramedics and an air ambulance to the collapsed mine.

“The situation is developing and further information will be provided as it becomes available,” read a statement from Victoria Police.

Emergency services are desperately trying to rescue two people trapped underground after the gold mine at the Indicator Lane site in Ballarat (pictured) collapsed on Wednesday afternoon.

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allen said she was “thinking of every worker and family affected by the event.”

“Tonight will be a long night for them and for the entire Ballarat community.”

The bushland surrounding the Ballarat Gold Mine has been extensively scoured by police and volunteers in the search for missing mother, Samantha Murphy.

The 51-year-old disappeared without a trace after leaving her home on Eureka Street in Ballarat East about 7am on February 4 for a run at Woowookrung Regional Park.

Mobile phone records show Ms Murphy arrived in Mount Clear about an hour later, where police allege she was murdered by 22-year-old Patrick Stephenson.

Police warned those involved in the search for Ms Murphy to be weary of the hundreds of abandoned mine shafts in the area, many of which have been left open.

Despite the massive search, the mother-of-three’s remains have yet to be located.

The network of mine shafts that make up the Ballarat Gold Mine has been operational since the 1850s, with some of the original shafts still in use.

A cave-in at the site trapped 27 miners about a kilometer underground at around 3:30 am on November 12, 2007.

All miners were recovered safely after being hoisted to the surface through a ventilation shaft at around 8am.

On Anzac Day the year before, Tasmanian miners Todd Russell and Brant Webb were trapped in a small cage 925 meters underground for two weeks after a rockfall at the Beaconsfield gold mine, northwest of Launceston.

While Mr. Russell and Mr. Webb triumphantly left the mine, their colleague Larry Knight had been killed in the initial collapse.

They were both able to join mourners at their colleague’s funeral – which had been postponed until they were released – on May 9.

More to come.

RISHI Sunak’s flagship package to help millions of renters is on the brink of collapse, The Sun understands.

Whitehall insiders claim Conservative manifesto pledge to end “no-fault evictions” is on track failure as Michael Gove is being held to “ransom” by angry Tory MPs.

Last month, the Housing Secretary pledged to pass the flagship tenant reform bill before this year’s general election.

But distraught officials have accused a backstabbing Tories, including some landlords, of refusing to compromise on the legislation.

Sources say the charges are against the bill is led by Totnes MP Anthony Mangnall.

A Whitehall source said: “It looks like the Renters Reform Bill could now collapse and the Tories risk breaking their manifesto pledge to end no-fault evictions.

“Officials are facing a total loss as both pro-landlord groups like the National Residential Landlords Association and pro-tenant groups like the Renters Reform Coalition want this bill passed as quickly as possible.

“It appears that a small group of MPs, led by Anthony Mangnall, are holding the bill to ransom.”

Mr Mangnall, who is not a landlord himself, stressed that he supports the abolition of no-fault evictions.

But he claimed a large number of Tories are furious about the bill which would ban fixed-term leases and replace them with periodic leases without an end date.

Ministers and rebels have reached a stalemate and insiders fear time will run out to bring the bill to the House of Commons – meaning it will fail.

Mr Mangnall said: “I want to amend the bill so as not to overturn it.

“My role as a legislator is to ensure that we pass sensible legislation. We have had constructive meetings with Michael Gove.

“It’s about finding the right balance.”

Tom Darling, campaign director at the Renters Reform Coalition, said: “Another delay to this legislation caused by an ungovernable group of Conservative MPs – many of whom are landowners.

“It is becoming clear that they are planning to undermine their own pledge to end no-fault evictions at the eleventh hour.

“The truth is that the Renters (Reform) Bill is the bare minimum that tenants need – we will not support a grubby deal between the government and the backers of landlords that is little better than the miserable status quo.”

A spokesperson for the Department for Levelling, Housing and Communities said: “Our historic Renters (Reform) Bill will deliver a fairer private rental sector for both tenants and landlords. It will abolish section 21 evictions – giving people greater security in their homes and empowering them to tackle bad practice.

“We continue to meet regularly with a range of groups representing all parties in the private rental sector.”

Kelly Ripa And Mark Consuelos witnessed a meltdown on their honeymoon.

During the Tuesday March 5 episode of Live with Kelly and Mark, The cohosts and power couple recalled a story about an unnamed celebrity they saw raging at the hotel staff while on vacation.

“Mark and I were in a hotel with the children. I’m not going to mention the name, but there was a celebrity here and this celebrity was on their honeymoon,” said Ripa, 53. “This celebrity asked to speak to the manager.”

“She wasn’t happy,” Consuelos (52) chimed in.

While the mystery couple may have had a problem on their honeymoon, Ripa and Consuelos have apparently had better luck with their marriage.

Last month, the couple recreated a photo from their May 1996 wedding, almost 28 years after they tied the knot in Las Vegas.

A popular pizza chain is on the brink of collapse, with more than a hundred jobs at stake.

Bondi Pizza has appointed administrators who are looking for a buyer at the chain.

The companies that have fallen into administration include Casual Dining Concepts (Holdings) Pty Ltd and Casual Dining Concepts (Leasing) Pty Ltd.

Casual Dining Concepts (stores) Pty Ltd, Casual Dining Concepts (trade) Pty Ltd, Bondi Pizza Bar & Grill (Macquarie) Pty Ltd, Bondi Pizza Bar & Grill (Parramatta) Pty Ltd and Bondi Pizza Bar & Grill (Eastgardens) Pty Ltd are also on the list.

The companies are all owned by the restaurant’s sole director Gary Linz.

There are three Bondi Pizza eateries in NSW in Parramatta, Macquarie Center in Macquarie Park and a restaurant in the East Gardens of Westfield in Sydney’s south east.

Johnathan Keenan and Peter Krejci of bankruptcy firm BRI Ferrier were appointed managers of the once-popular restaurant.

Mr Keenan and Mr Krejci took over the business last Friday, considering all options to save the company and the restaurant’s 120 employees.

There are currently expressions of interest from potential buyers to take over the company.

Efforts are also being made to restructure the restaurant.

The restaurant is said to have been hit by difficult trading conditions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, it is believed that most of their payments due to them are current.

A creditors meeting will take place on March 11.

More to come.

The former England and Liverpool boss will look to continue working off the pitch.

And he would like to have a crack in another country and has extensive experience in Sweden and Italy.

Hodgson’s reputation is high in the coaching world and he could receive offers soon.

Insiders reveal Hodgson played a key role in the team selection for Monday’s 1-1 draw with Everton, ahead of his medical tragedy.

Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone returned to the team and Odsonne Edouard was named for Matheus Franca.

Both subs were lined up in preparation for the match before he left.

Palace started their post-Hodgson era with a 3-0 win over Burnley today.

It was Austrian boss Oliver Glasner’s first game in charge of the Eagles.

HOW TO GET FREE BETTS ON FOOTBALL

He didn’t deviate too far from Hodgson’s plans in terms of selection, keeping Sam Johnstone in the squad over former Manchester United keeper Dean Henderson.

Edouard also kept his place in the side above Franca, playing on the left of goalkeeper Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Fans joke that Roy Hodgson will ‘play for Chelsea next week’ after a wayward touch during the win over West Ham

By winning his first game in charge, Glasner became the first Palace manager to do so since Alan Pardew, who did so in 2015.

Two children were killed Thursday when a hillside collapsed near a dam in Northern California, authorities said, days after heavy rains lashed the region.

Around 9 a.m., the Shasta County Sheriff’s Department responded to a portion of the Chappie-Shasta Off-Highway Vehicle Area, near a trail and campground, for a report of rocks and debris broken off the hillside near a drainage pipe , the sheriff’s department said in a statement. The area is about a quarter mile from the Shasta Dam, which spans the Sacramento River just north of Redding, California, according to officials.

The two children, whose names and ages were not released, had fallen from the hill and became trapped in the rubble, the statement said. The sheriff’s office asked the Bureau of Reclamation, which manages the dam, to temporarily reduce water releases to assist with search efforts.

The children were found among the rubble and had suffered injuries during the fall, the statement said. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Multiple agencies responded, including the sheriff’s search and rescue team, dive team and boat safety unit. It was unclear how the children ended up at the bottom of the hill, or whether anyone else had been with them. The sheriff’s office could not immediately be reached for comment.

The sheriff’s office did not say whether recent rainfall was a factor in the hillside collapse. But the area near the dam received more than four inches of rain on Wednesday during a recent storm. according to the National Weather Servicecombine for more than 8 inches of rain so far this month.

At 600 feet tall, Shasta Dam is one of the tallest in the United States and tames the Sacramento River some 200 miles north of San Francisco. The dam captures Mount Shasta’s annual snowmelt and creates a massive reservoir that anchors California’s irrigation system.

Up to half of the Amazon rainforest could turn into grasslands or weakened ecosystems in the coming decades, a new study shows, as climate change, deforestation and severe droughts like the ones the region is currently experiencing damage vast areas beyond recovery .

Those stresses in the most vulnerable parts of the rainforest could ultimately push the entire forest ecosystem, where a tenth of the planet's land species live, into acute water stress and beyond a tipping point that would cause a forest-wide collapse, researchers said.

Although previous studies have assessed the individual impacts of climate change and deforestation on the rainforest, this peer-reviewed research shows that published Wednesday in the journal Natureis the first major study to focus on the cumulative effects of a range of threats.

“This study puts it all together and shows how this tipping point is closer than other studies estimate,” said Carlos Nobre, an author of the study. Dr. Nobre is a Brazilian earth system scientist who studies how deforestation and climate change can permanently alter the forest.

The study overlayed data on forest cover, temperature and rainfall patterns, and then took into account other variables that could make different parts of the forest more or less vulnerable, such as the presence of roads or legal protections, to map where the rainforest is located. most located. will probably transform.

The regional profiles that emerged showed that a tenth of the Amazon region was highly vulnerable to transformation into grasslands or degraded ecosystems with fewer trees. Another 47 percent of forests have moderate potential to transform, including largely pristine areas that are more vulnerable to extreme droughts like the current one.

These changes could push the forest to a tipping point that would lead to the collapse of the entire forest ecosystem.

“We don't really know when we are going to achieve this,” said Bernardo Flores, a postdoctoral researcher at the Federal University of Santa Catarina and lead author of the study. But, he added, as evidenced by last year's drought, “we've gotten there faster than we thought.”

Lincoln Muniz Alves, a climatologist at the National Institute for Space Research in Brazil who was not involved in the study, said the research contributed to a growing body of knowledge about the forest's resilience to the variety of challenges it faces. confronted. “The study makes progress in understanding the tipping point,” he said. “In general, previous scientific papers have mainly examined the impact of deforestation.”

Recent research has shown that parts of the southeastern Amazon forest that have suffered large-scale deforestation and fires have already started emitting more carbon dioxide than they absorb, because the rainforest there has already been damaged beyond the point of recovery.

The collapse of part or all of the Amazon rainforest would release the equivalent of several years' worth of global emissions, possibly as long as 20 years, into the atmosphere as the trees, which store vast amounts of carbon, are replaced by degraded ecosystems. And because those same trees pump enormous amounts of water into the atmosphere, their loss could also disrupt global rainfall patterns and temperatures in ways that are not yet well understood.

The researchers also estimated the limits of what the forest can withstand in terms of various threats. Global warming must not exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius, deforestation must be kept below 10 percent of the original tree cover and the annual dry season must not last longer than five months for the forest to remain intact, it shows the study.

To do this, governments must not only halt carbon emissions and deforestation, but also restore at least 5 percent of the rainforest, the study said.

“If you exceed these thresholds, the forest can basically collapse or merge into other ecosystems,” said Dr. Flores. “There is probably one tipping point in the system that is formed by the interaction of these different stressors.”

However, there are still unknowns. Researchers don't fully understand why some trees die after a drought while others don't; different biodiversity profiles in different regions make general conclusions difficult; and crucially, scientists still do not fully understand the complex interactions between factors such as drought, deforestation and other threats.

Still, says Marina Hirota, a professor at the Federal University of Santa Catarina and another author of the paper, governments should not wait until there is more clarity before taking action. “Sometimes it takes a little longer for science to really figure out what we need,” said Dr. Hirota. “Are we going to wait and blame uncertainty for our inaction?”

In the 2004 film The Day After Tomorrow, humanity is plunged into a nightmarish international storm that plunges the planet into a new ice age.

And while the blockbuster was relegated to the realm of science fiction, the science behind this terrifying scenario is true.

Within a few years, melting glaciers could shut down the Gulf Stream — the current system that brings heat to the Northern Hemisphere, experts say.

Without this additional heat source, average temperatures in North America, parts of Asia and Europe could drop by several degrees, and people would see “severe and cascading impacts around the world.”

Scientists are warning that an abrupt halt to Atlantic Ocean currents appears more likely than ever as computer simulations show a 'cliff-like' tipping point looms in the near future.

In some parts of Europe, the collapse of a large system of ocean currents called the AMOC could lead to a temperature drop of more than 3°C every 10 years

The study's authors, from Utrecht University in the Netherlands, don't know exactly when the collapse will occur, although an earlier study suggests it will happen as soon as next year.

“We are getting closer to collapse, but we are not sure how much closer,” said lead author Rene van Westen, a climate scientist and oceanographer at Utrecht University.

'We are heading towards a tipping point.'

When a global weather disaster like the one in The Day After Tomorrow could occur, Van Westen says it's “the million dollar question.”

'Unfortunately we cannot answer that [that] right now,” he said.

'It also depends on the speed of climate change that we as humanity are causing.'

The Gulf Stream is part of a much broader system of currents, officially called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, or AMOC.

Described as 'the conveyor belt of the ocean', it transports warm water near the ocean's surface north – from the tropics to the Northern Hemisphere.

When the warm water reaches the North Atlantic Ocean (around Europe and the UK, and the east coast of the US), it releases heat and freezes.

As this ice forms, salt remains in the ocean water.

The large amount of salt in the water makes it denser, sinks and is carried south into the depths below.

Eventually, the water is drawn back to the surface and heats up in a process called upwelling, completing the cycle.

Scientists think AMOC brings enough heat to the Northern Hemisphere that without it, large parts of Europe could end up in a deep freeze.

Formally known as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), it powers the Gulf Stream which brings warm water from the Gulf of Mexico to the northeastern US coast

WHAT IS THE AMOC?

Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is an important part of Earth's climate system.

The pattern transports warm, salty water in the upper Atlantic Ocean north, and colder fresh water in the deep Atlantic Ocean south.

This ocean circulation system transports a significant amount of heat from the tropics and the Southern Hemisphere to the North Atlantic Ocean, where the heat is transferred to the atmosphere.

High levels of carbon dioxide would cause the ice in the Arctic and Greenland to melt, increasing the amount of freshwater entering the ocean.

This increase in freshwater would disrupt the AMOC, which depends on a balance between fresh and salt water.

Previous studies have already shown that AMOC is slowing down due to climate change.

The engine of this conveyor belt is off the coast of Greenland, where as more ice melts due to climate change, more freshwater flows into the North Atlantic Ocean and everything slows down.

The new study predicts that an abrupt closure of the AMOC could occur in the coming decades, rather than in the coming centuries as previously thought.

The researchers designed a computer model simulation in which they could measure a sudden weakening of the ocean circulation.

The simulation introduced fresh water into the Atlantic Ocean, and as a result the circulation strength gradually decreased until it reached a critical 'tipping point' and collapsed.

According to the results, Europe's climate will cool by about 1°C per decade, with some regions even experiencing more than 3°C of cooling per decade – much faster than current global warming of about 0.36 F ( 0.2 C) per decade.

Apart from sending countries into a deep freeze, this would expand Arctic ice further south, further increase heat in the Southern Hemisphere, alter global rainfall patterns and disrupt the Amazon rainforest.

Other scientists say it would be a catastrophe that could cause global food and water shortages.

AMOC collapse: It would change weather worldwide because it means a shutdown of one of the planet's most important climate and ocean forces. Temperatures in northwestern Europe would drop by 9 to 27 degrees (5 to 15 degrees Celsius) in the coming decades

“We found that once the tipping point is reached, the conveyor belt stops within a hundred years,” the authors said.

'Heat transport towards the north is greatly reduced, leading to abrupt climate shifts.'

The only thing they couldn't identify is when exactly this tipping point will be reached, even if it will take at least decades, if not longer.

“The research makes a compelling case that the AMOC is approaching a tipping point based on a robust, physically based early warning indicator,” said Tim Lenton, chair of climate change at the University of Exeter, who was not involved in the study.

“What it cannot (and does not) say is how close the tipping point is, because it shows there is insufficient data to make a statistically reliable estimate of that.”

The research has been published in the journal Scientific progress.

What would the world look like if the Gulf Stream collapsed?

If the AMOC were to collapse, much less heat would reach Western Europe and the region would experience very harsh winters, the kind of scenario depicted in extreme fashion in the film The Day After Tomorrow.

It was relatively stable until the 1800s, but the flow decreased after the so-called 'Little Ice Age' ended in 1850.

Temperatures fell so low that the River Thames froze completely and records show Londoners crossed the waterway on foot.

The last shutdown probably occurred at the end of the last ice age, 12,000 years ago, and caused a temperature drop of 5 to 10 degrees Celsius in Western Europe.

In the event of another collapse, not only would European winters become much colder, but droughts, storms and summer heat waves would likely become more common.

Sea levels could rise nearly 20 inches around the North Atlantic basin, which surrounds the U.S. east coast.

This would ultimately push people living along the coast further inland to escape flooding. There would be widespread collapse of deep-sea ecosystems.

In the US, Florida would be particularly hard hit as water flow north would be halted, causing it to pool on the state's coastline.

An investigation published Last year we looked at the consequences that the termination of the AMOC could have specifically for Great Britain.

Researchers from the University of Exeter made a computer model and found that the weather in 2080 would be 3.4°C colder than last year.

Rainfall during the growing season is expected to decrease by 123 mm, she added.

This, Ars Technica According to reports, this is enough to reduce the UK's arable land from 32 percent to just seven percent, with major implications for food production.

The impact would not be felt in Europe and the United States, with the collapse of the AMOC also predicted to increase droughts in Africa's Sahel.
