Chimeras, also called “ghost sharks,” are a type of cartilaginous fish related to sharks and rays.

Cartilaginous fish are among the oldest fish alive today. Living Science noted.

The newly described species is a type of short-nosed chimera, researchers explained.

Scientists documented this discovery in an article published March 6 in the journal Raffles Bulletin of Zoology.

The paper notes that ghost sharks live in the dark waters of the deep sea, where sunlight does not reach.

Specifically, they are found at depths below 1,640 feet around the continental slopes and ocean ridges.

The fish species tend to feed on bottom-dwelling animals such as crustaceans and molluscs, according to LiveScience.

Chimaera supapae can grow up to 50 centimeters in length, with long, broad pectoral fins.

Scientists believe the fins help the creature move across the seabed.

Perhaps most interesting is where the species was discovered: off the Andaman coast of Thailand.

It is important to note that the fish was found dead as part of a deep-sea research project conducted in 2018.

Chilling story of the world’s heaviest great white shark, torn by scars and bite marks – and how he suffered battle wounds

“Chimeras are rare in this region of the world,” David Ebertlead author of the study and program director of the Pacific Shark Research Center at San Jose State University in California, told LiveScience in an email.

“There were only 53 known species of chimeras in the world; these are 54,” Ebert said.

The discovery of Chimaera supapae is exciting for scientists because it helps us learn more about the diversity of life in the deep sea.

“Evolutionarily, these chimeras are among some of the oldest lineages of fish, with the lineage dating back 300 to 400 million years,” Ebert said.

“The discovery of new species like this chimera tells us how little we know about the marine environment and how much remains to be explored.”

IT is the royal biography that made headlines around the world – ‘Charles III: New King, New Court. The Inside Story’, by the author and  Daily Mail journalist Robert Hardman.

Featured over several days in the Mail and The Mail on Sunday, the book offered a compelling series of revelations about an extraordinary moment in Monarchy: the end of the Queen’s life after 70 years on the throne and the beginning of the  Carolean era.

Here, then, are some of the key points that have forever changed our understanding of how Elizabeth’s record-breaking reign finally drew to a close – and the challenges facing her son and heir King Charles III as he navigates a new and very different landscape.

The Queen remained dutiful right until the end

When Sir Edward Young, the Queen’s private secretary, opened the last red box that had gone to her, he found the long-list of candidates for the Order of Merit, with her choices ticked.

On September 7, the day before she died, she spent the day in bed at Balmoral yet still made plans to participate remotely in the scheduled Privy Council meeting – plans which had to be cancelled at the last moment.

She had completed the task just two days prior to her death, with Hardman writing: ‘Even on her deathbed, there had been work to do. And she had done it.’

She knew her health was failing

The Queen suffered ‘multiple’ health conditions in her final year and was well aware she wouldn’t reach the age of 100 as her mother had.

Plans were drawn up for a Regency

Aides prepared for the Queen suffering a slow deterioration or a ‘sudden public collapse’ in her final years with secret plans for Prince Charles to become regent. Options varied from a ‘regency light’, with minimal involvement by Charles, or a ‘reversible regency’ in which he would discharge her duties during a period of her incapacity.

Charles and Camilla spent an hour with her privately

After flying by helicopter to Birkhall, their home on the Balmoral estate, Prince Charles drove the couple to Balmoral castle in a borrowed Land Rover.

They were greeted by Princess Anne, who had happened to be staying, who led them immediately to the Queen’s bedside to spend time with her.

Charles told both his sons to travel to Balmoral urgently to say their goodbyes

The Royal Air Force arranged for Prince William to fly with his uncles from RAF Northolt to Aberdeen at 2.30pm.

Prince Harry, who happened to be in London with Meghan for a few days of charity engagements, chartered his own plane to Aberdeen.

Catherine, Princess of Wales decided not to attend

In his memoir Spare, Harry writes of feeling deeply offended when his father asked him not to bring Meghan with him to Balmoral. Learning that Kate would not be there either assuaged his anger – but Hardman writes that he did not realise she hadn’t been asked to stay away.

In fact, she had decided she should remain at home for the sake of her children, who were starting a new school, Lambrook.

William was still angry at Harry’s ‘reckless betrayal’

Harry claimed in Spare that he had texted his brother to ask about his travel arrangements, but not received a reply.

Hardman writes: ‘Clearly, Prince William did not regard this as the appropriate moment for the intensely difficult conversation he needed to have with his brother’, alluding to William’s anger over the Sussexes’ ‘reckless betrayal’ during their Oprah Winfrey interview.

This was the broadcast in which they claimed Kate had made Meghan cry during a row over a bridesmaid’s dress, and that two members of the royal family had expressed concern over the colour of then-unborn Prince Archie’s skin.

There was also wariness about Spare, which had not yet been published. ‘Some of the family were probably ready to give him a piece of their mind,’ Hardman quotes a source saying.

The Queen ‘slipped away’ in her sleep

According to a memo written by Sir Edward Young to record the momentous events for posterity, which now resides in the Royal Archives, the Queen ‘slipped away’ peacefully in her sleep, without any pain.

Charles learned the news of the Queen’s death when he was addressed as ‘Your Majesty’

Not expecting his mother to die quite so soon, Charles had been out gathering mushrooms in the grounds at Birkhall when he received a call from his sister, the Princess Royal, telling him to come immediately.

He and Camilla jumped back into the Land Rover, but hadn’t yet arrived when Sir Edward called to tell him that the Queen had passed away. ‘He had just turned off the B976 onto the back drive of the estate when, at the age of 73, he was addressed as ‘Your Majesty’ for the first time,’ writes Hardman. ‘No further explanation was needed.’

There was a certain amount of wariness regarding Harry as Spare was yet to be published

Harry did not eat with Charles, William that night

Prince Harry did not make it to Balmoral in time to see his grandmother before her death.

He said in Spare that he was informed that she had died via an alert from BBC News on his phone – although Hardman suggests that several attempts had been made by King Charles to call him with the news, which were unsuccessful because he was airborne at the time.

Harry dined alone that night, while the King had dinner with William and Camilla.

‘The King needed to have vital but discreet discussions with his elder son,’ writes Hardman. ‘In years gone by, such a moment would automatically have included his younger son. But not any more.’

The funeral procession risked disaster

The late Queen’s funeral rehearsal was a ‘comedy of errors’ as organisers found that ‘everything that could go wrong did go wrong’.

The carefully calculated parade times had failed to take into account the different length and speed of steps required by a Guardsman and a Royal Navy recruit carrying a two-ton gun carriage, meaning the front of the parade ‘ended up parting company with the coffin.’

The whole parade was ‘out of step from the start’ after the bagpipes pre-empted the first command. One band had been led to the wrong start point. And one Gentlemen at Arms was nearly crushed between the gun carriage and Wellington Arch after going the wrong way.

Prince William was furious over Harry’s ‘blatant attack’ against Kate in his Netflix documentary

The Duke of Sussex claimed that for male members of the royal family, ‘there can be a temptation or an urge to marry someone who would fit the mould – as opposed to somebody who you perhaps are destined to be with.’

William saw the comments as clearly about his wife Kate and regarded them as ‘the lowest of the low’.

Queen Camilla’s family call her Lorraine

Once, there seemed to be no chance of Camilla ever becoming Queen, due to public antipathy towards her for her role in the breakdown of Charles’ marriage to Diana.

It was during that period that her family gave her the humorous nickname ‘Lorraine’ – as in the French la reine, meaning Queen. ‘She always saw the funny side of that – even if Prince Charles did not,’ says a friend.

The temperature has dropped even further at the royal palaces

Not only does the King not switch on the heating during the winter to avoid contributing to climate change, but he is also a ‘compulsive window-opener,’ according to Hardman.

‘There’s a constant battle about it,’ says Camilla’s sister Annabel Elliot. ‘He will have opened it. She will creep in behind and shut it. So there’s a lot of “Oh darling, you shut the window.”

“Yes, I have, because we’re all freezing.”’

Prince William might not head the Anglican Church

While the Prince of Wales admires and respects the Church, and enjoys attending services at significant times of the year, such as Christmas and Easter.

He feels he is no different to the average Briton in that he is not a regular worshipper.

And that has led to speculation as to whether he may consider not taking on the formal role as head of the Church of England –  that British monarchs have held since the time of Henry VIII.

The Princess of Wales is said to be among the tens of millions who get their updates from the Mail’s award-winning news service.

“I’ve never minded missing out on things if I couldn’t afford them, and would only do things if I had the money.

BE A SMART SHOPPER

I ALWAYS make sure I get the best deal before I buy anything; I never buy impulsively.

I’m also a fan of fashion rental programs that are available now — like By Rotation or Hurr — and especially if there’s a wedding or special occasion coming up.

CHECK SUBSCRIPTIONS

Do you know how many subscriptions will be debited from your account?

Not just things like a gym membership or your TV package, but all the apps you pay for monthly.

Unless the service is essential, a subscription is the definition of money for old rope.

View all your subscriptions and add up how much you spend on them each month. Cancel some now.

You can always re-subscribe if you find yourself missing them, but I suspect you won’t.

HAVE A DAY ‘EARN MONEY’

It can be difficult to find the time and motivation to sell your unwanted stuff, that’s why I created my Earn Money Day.

All you have to do is pick a day of the week and list five items you want to sell. It could be eBay, Gumtree or Facebook – there are loads of apps these days for specific things like vintage clothing.

Start by doing it one day a month and then increase it to one day a week.

THE FOOD STORE

Plan your meals and write a shopping list for what you need

9

ONLY by thinking a little smarter about your weekly supermarket shop can you save a useful amount on your expenses.

Try these simple things next one time and see how much you can save. . .

Plan your meals and write a shopping list for what you need. Please adhere to this and do not purchase anything that is not on the list.

Keep in mind that meat and fish are expensive these days, so try to plan vegetarian meals as well.

Try to shop at the end of the day when stores have items on sale.

Look at the price per 100 grams, not the item price, to better compare costs.

Buy your fruits and vegetables loose. Pre-packaged ones can sometimes cost you twice as much.

NO SPENDING DAYS

If you do something with the kids, it should be free, like going to the park or drawing at home

9

If you do something with the kids, it should be free, like going to the park or drawing at homeCredit: Getty

THIS is simple: just don’t spend money for a day. Give yourself an easy start by doing it once a week.

If you’re hanging out with friends, go to each other’s houses instead of meeting in the city where you spend money.

If you do something with the kids, it should be free, like going to the park or drawing at home.

Have your own coffee instead of going to a cafe. Even shopping is no longer possible. Instead, get creative with what you already have in the closet.

It’s amazing to see how resourceful you can be when you need to.

To take my No Spend Day to the next level, you can add up all the money you saved by not spending and then put it into your savings account.

SAVE MONEY EVERY DAY

Move odd amounts of cash from your checking account to your savings every day - £208, then move £8 to savings

9

LOOK at your bank balance daily and move it, whatever the last bit of the figure, into your savings.

So if there is €208 in your checking account, transfer €8. If there is $54 the next day, move another $4.

You can save $30 or $40 a week without missing out.

There are also bank accounts and apps that allow you to save automatically. For example, the Plum app analyzes your expenses and what you can afford to put aside before transferring money to your savings every four or five days.

TRACK YOUR SPENDING

Set up a spending tracker to see where your money is going and where you can save

9

A SPENDING tracker is easy to set up and only needs to be done once. Once it’s up and running, you’ll want to use it more and more.

1. Write down all your expected monthly expenses in one column: mortgage, bills, grocery, pension, everything.

2. In another column, write down what you get that month – wages, whatever tax credits, refunds you might expect, birthday money, a bonus and so on.

3. First add up your expenses and then your income. Subtract your expenses from your income and see what you’re left with.

4. This figure is what you should keep in mind when you’re about to buy a new top or an overpriced hot dog at the movie theater. It’s not about how much the item costs, it’s about whether or not you can afford it.

Missing student from Noida killed by friends in party brawl, body found in 6 feet deep well

A Noida student who went missing for the past few days was allegedly murdered by his four friends and they buried his body in a field in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, according to police. The victim, identified as Yash Mittal, was a first year BBA student of a premier college in Greater Noida and lived in Amroha. On February 27, his father, Pradeep Mittal, filed a missing case with Greater Noida police after Yash was not found on the college campus after he suddenly disappeared the day before.

According to an NDTV report, his father Deepak Mittal informed the police after he started receiving ransom messages and demanded Rs. 6 crore in exchange for his son’s release. According to police footage, Yash left the university on Monday and was on the phone. The police, who retrieved Yash’s call details, found that he was on call with one of his friends Rachit. Yash usually hangs out with Rachit, Shivam, Sushant and Shubham, police said.

According to police, Yash was invited to a party in Amroha on Monday. During the party, a fight broke out and Yash was killed, police said. The suspect buried the body in a field and it was recovered after Rachit identified the location, police told NDTV.

During interrogation, Rachit told the police that Yash was called for a party in Amroha on February 26. On the same day, the victim along with Rachit and three other men went to a forest in the Tigriya region of Amroha, where Yash had a dispute with others. The four men then strangled Yash and buried his body in a pit about two meters deep.

Rachit further confirmed that after the murder, the four suspects sent a kidnap message to Yash’s family using the victim’s mobile phone and demanded a ransom of Rs 6 crore with the aim of misleading the police.

Dadri police station and SWAT team recovered Yash Mittal’s body from the well in the presence of his family members. The post-mortem procedure is being conducted by Gajraula police.

Viewers of ITV drama Breathtaking, which illustrates the horrors NHS workers have endured during the pandemic, have admitted they struggle to watch the series.

Breathtaking follows Dr Abbey Henderson, a fictional character, but the powerful scripts are adapted from a memoir of the same name, written by NHS palliative care doctor Dr Rachel Clarke.

Terrifyingly realistic scenes in Tuesday's episode show doctors confronted with the disastrous Covid redundancy policy blamed for killing thousands of care home residents.

Under guidance designed to free up NHS beds ahead of an expected Covid surge, thousands of unswabbed hospital patients were discharged to care homes – despite potentially being infected.

Just days later, Dr. Henderson – played by Joanne Froggatt – is branded a 'murderer' by a woman whose father is the eleventh Covid case in the house since the infected patient was discharged. Seven of those residents died.

Later in the episode, in a scene that TV critics have described as 'so realistic it will break your heart', we see Dr. Henderson and her colleagues tearfully calling their colleague Divina's partner to break the news that palliative care is her only option.

In the first episode, which aired on Monday, young healthcare assistant Divina started showing signs of Covid while caring for patients.

She was exposed to Covid when hospital teams struggled to obtain enough PPE and were forced to make her own PPE from rubbish bags.

A few minutes later, Divina – of Spanish background – is taken to her own department after rapidly deteriorating. She is taken to intensive care and put into an induced coma.

After making the painful decision to turn off her ventilator, Dr. Henderson cries as she accompanies a nurse to Divina's room for the last time.

As each device is turned off one by one, a nurse reads heartbreaking messages of love to Divina, written by colleagues and family members.

It is the responsibility of Dr. Henderson to then share the news among the staff.

The beloved colleague's funeral, which was watched on Zoom by hospital staff, showed the reality of families who lost loved ones during the darkest period of the pandemic.

Later in the episode, a scene that TV critics have described as 'so realistic it will break your heart', shows Dr. Henderson and her colleagues tearfully calling their colleague Divina's partner to break the news that palliative care is her only option.

When the second episode aired, viewers took to Twitter [now X] to share their thoughts on the pandemic drama and admit they struggled to watch it without 'sobbing and raging at the same time'

The comments read: 'Watching episode two of Breathtaking on ITV. Hard watch, really hard watch. So, so angry. The lies. So many bloody lies.

'This is hard to watch. Well done Breathtaking. The truth must be told.'

'The sadness and anger will never go away. I had to get up to say goodbye to my stepmother as the hearse drove past me because I wasn't allowed to attend the funeral.

“My greatest respect goes out to the doctors and nurses who made her feel comfortable during her end-of-life care.”

'Breathtaking has made me simultaneously rage at the government but burst into tears at the strength, adversity and courage of NHS staff at this terrible time.

'Wow, what a job this is. Just devastating.”

“Sobbed my way through episode two of Breathtaking. A few thoughts on how quickly we forget how awful things were and also how disgracefully NHS staff have been treated since they did all that. The clapping didn't last long, did it?

'Anyone who tries not to cry for the entire hour of Breathtaking. I only lasted five minutes and couldn't stop…'

'It's so sad to see this and bring back the sense of hopelessness that we NHS workers felt.'

“I haven't had this much anger after watching a TV show in a long time.”

'Watching Breathtaking makes me angry all over again.'

'Breathtaking is heartbreaking. The trauma these poor NHS staff must have. The NHS works at its best in war-like conditions. The crown jewels of our country. The government should be jailed.”

'Breathtaking and moving program brings back the pain and suffering of those forced to sit outside care homes while our loved ones died lonely, terrible deaths in government-ordered Covid-ravaged homes.'

“I feel angry when I watch Breathtaking – all the sacrifices that have been made and the lives that have been lost – it's just too much.”

'Harrowing, just harrowing.'

'A moving, well-acted series. I am torn between pure anger at our duplicitous, selfish government and deep admiration for the doctors and nurses, who work around the clock at great risk, with little government support.

Volkswagen Group is reviewing the future of its joint venture in northwest China's Xinjiang region and another German industrial giant is beginning to sell its shares there after new international investigations into forced labor by predominantly Muslim ethnic groups.

Volkswagen said last week it was in talks with one of its main joint venture partners in China, state-owned Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, following allegations of human rights abuses at its joint venture in Xinjiang.

The companies are exploring “the future direction of the JV's business activities in Xinjiang,” VW said, adding that “several scenarios are currently under intensive investigation.”

Germany's BASF, the world's largest chemical company, announced on February 9 that it began taking steps late last year to divest its stakes in two manufacturing joint ventures in Xinjiang.

BASF said that while its audits found no human rights violations at either operation, “recently published reports regarding the joint venture partner contain serious allegations that indicate activities inconsistent with BASF's values.”

The Chinese government has strongly opposed any move by multinational companies to distance themselves from commercial activities in Xinjiang, a sparsely populated region four times the size of California.

In a written response to a question about Volkswagen and BASF, the Foreign Ministry on Sunday called the allegations about forced labor in to close foreign markets. The ministry added: “We hope that the enterprises involved will respect the facts, recognize right and wrong and cherish the opportunity to invest and develop in Xinjiang.”

VW and BASF, which have made significant investments and sales in China for decades, are among the companies increasingly caught between Beijing on the one hand and Western governments, shareholders and human rights groups on the other. Scrutiny of German companies is particularly tight as European governments grapple with how to become less dependent on China.

Pressure on multinationals has increased in recent months as U.S. customs officials have gained experience investigating whether imports from China violate the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act of 2021. The law bans the import of goods from China made with forced labor . especially goods made with forced labor in Xinjiang. Uighurs, who are predominantly Muslim, are the largest ethnic group there, making up 45 percent of the population, according to a 2020 census.

Companies are finding it increasingly difficult to find out whether their suppliers and joint venture partners are using components or materials that come from northwest China and may have been produced with forced labor. China does not allow independent supply chain audits in Xinjiang and has even arrested employees of foreign due diligence companies working in far less politically sensitive places like Beijing and Shanghai.

Volkswagen said it had experienced delays in delivering some imported vehicles to dealers in the United States due to “a customs issue” at U.S. ports. The company said it had to replace a small electronic part, but did not say how many cars were affected.

VW did not say the part came from Xinjiang, but noted: “When we receive information about human rights risks or potential violations, we aim to resolve them as quickly as possible.”

Nathan Picarsic, co-founder of Horizon Advisory, a Washington-based geopolitical supply chain analysis firm, said hundreds and possibly thousands of Audis and other Volkswagen Group vehicles, mostly equipped with four-cylinder engines, have been stopped at five U.S. ports in Washington. in recent weeks because they contain a part from Xinjiang that is not easy to replace. VW aims to deliver the cars by the end of March and is notifying customers of delays. The Financial times first reported that the cars had been stopped at US ports.

Multinationals are also under pressure from shareholders. Union Investment, a major German asset manager, had approved investments in Volkswagen last December following a report showing no evidence of forced labor. But the fund changed course last week, saying the latest findings meant investments in Volkswagen were incompatible with the company's sustainability goals.

Stephan Weil, governor of the state of Lower Saxony in Germany and member of Volkswagen's board of directors, called the latest findings “worrying.”

China has carried out an extensive crackdown in Xinjiang over the past decade to combat what it describes as extremism among mainly Muslim ethnic minorities there. The crackdown followed a series of attacks by militants in 2014, including attacks on two train stations and a morning market, that left a total of 71 dead and more than 300 injured, according to official reports.

Under Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Xinjiang has locked up hundreds of thousands of Uighurs, Kazakhs and other Muslims in massive re-education camps, mainly starting in 2017. Xinjiang also began a push to give Uighur villagers and workers jobs in factories. Chinese officials presented these transfer projects as an effort to lift Uyghurs out of poverty and integrate them into the economic mainstream. But the labor transfers were accompanied by coercive pressure, quasi-military discipline and restrictions on movement, according to research by The New York Times, other news media and human rights researchers.

Adrian Zenz, director of China studies at the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, a nonprofit anti-communist group in Washington, has found evidence in recent months of forced labor at a chemical company in Xinjiang that also has joint ventures with BASF. He then found evidence of forced labor at the Volkswagen joint venture.

He first shared BASF's evidence with the German news magazine Der Spiegel and the public television broadcaster ZDF. He first shared the VW information with the German newspaper Handelsblatt.

The VW information featured a photo of Uighur workers in military uniforms who had helped build a desert track in Xinjiang to test cars in extremely hot weather.

BASF and VW each said they began setting up joint ventures in Xinjiang in 2013. That was when the Chinese government was encouraging investment in the impoverished Far West, but before it began its crackdown on ethnic minorities.

VW said the joint venture in Xinjiang's capital Urumqi had 650 employees before the pandemic and is now much smaller.

BASF said one of its joint venture factories, in which it has a majority stake, has about 40 employees and makes a key ingredient for spandex. The other factory, in which BASF has a minority stake, has 80 employees making a chemical with broader applications, from pharmaceuticals to plastics.

BASF said it had decided last year to divest its stakes in both plants after concluding they did not fit with its goals of tackling climate change. The factories in Korla, another major city in Xinjiang, use a lot of coal. But BASF said it would now accelerate the process of withdrawing from the businesses.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi claimed on Saturday that the government's policies in Xinjiang have improved the lives of Uyghurs by creating jobs. “The so-called forced labor is just a baseless accusation,” Mr. Wang said during a question-and-answer session at the Munich Security Conference.

There could be another problem ahead for VW and other automakers in China. Human Rights Watch released a report on February 1 allege widespread use of forced labor by companies in Xinjiang that produce more than 15 percent of China's raw aluminum. The group accused car manufacturers of not wanting to know where their suppliers of many aluminum parts actually get the metal from.

The United States already bans the entry of products made from Xinjiang aluminum over concerns it is manufactured with forced labor.

VW said it investigates any misconduct by suppliers, adding: “Serious violations, such as forced labor, may lead to termination of the contract with the supplier if corrective action is not taken.”

Christopher Buckley contributed reporting from Taipei, Taiwan, and Melissa Eddy contributed reporting from Berlin.

In the 2004 film The Day After Tomorrow, humanity is plunged into a nightmarish international storm that plunges the planet into a new ice age.

And while the blockbuster was relegated to the realm of science fiction, the science behind this terrifying scenario is true.

Within a few years, melting glaciers could shut down the Gulf Stream — the current system that brings heat to the Northern Hemisphere, experts say.

Without this additional heat source, average temperatures in North America, parts of Asia and Europe could drop by several degrees, and people would see “severe and cascading impacts around the world.”

Scientists are warning that an abrupt halt to Atlantic Ocean currents appears more likely than ever as computer simulations show a 'cliff-like' tipping point looms in the near future.

In some parts of Europe, the collapse of a large system of ocean currents called the AMOC could lead to a temperature drop of more than 3°C every 10 years

In the Hollywood blockbuster The Day After Tomorrow (pictured), ocean currents around the world stop due to global warming, creating a new ice age on Earth

The study's authors, from Utrecht University in the Netherlands, don't know exactly when the collapse will occur, although an earlier study suggests it will happen as soon as next year.

“We are getting closer to collapse, but we are not sure how much closer,” said lead author Rene van Westen, a climate scientist and oceanographer at Utrecht University.

'We are heading towards a tipping point.'

When a global weather disaster like the one in The Day After Tomorrow could occur, Van Westen says it's “the million dollar question.”

'Unfortunately we cannot answer that [that] right now,” he said.

'It also depends on the speed of climate change that we as humanity are causing.'

The Gulf Stream is part of a much broader system of currents, officially called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, or AMOC.

Described as 'the conveyor belt of the ocean', it transports warm water near the ocean's surface north – from the tropics to the Northern Hemisphere.

When the warm water reaches the North Atlantic Ocean (around Europe and the UK, and the east coast of the US), it releases heat and freezes.

As this ice forms, salt remains in the ocean water.

The large amount of salt in the water makes it denser, sinks and is carried south into the depths below.

Eventually, the water is drawn back to the surface and heats up in a process called upwelling, completing the cycle.

Scientists think AMOC brings enough heat to the Northern Hemisphere that without it, large parts of Europe could end up in a deep freeze.

Formally known as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), it powers the Gulf Stream which brings warm water from the Gulf of Mexico to the northeastern US coast

Formally known as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), it powers the Gulf Stream which brings warm water from the Gulf of Mexico to the northeastern US coast

WHAT IS THE AMOC?

Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is an important part of Earth's climate system.

The pattern transports warm, salty water in the upper Atlantic Ocean north, and colder fresh water in the deep Atlantic Ocean south.

This ocean circulation system transports a significant amount of heat from the tropics and the Southern Hemisphere to the North Atlantic Ocean, where the heat is transferred to the atmosphere.

High levels of carbon dioxide would cause the ice in the Arctic and Greenland to melt, increasing the amount of freshwater entering the ocean.

This increase in freshwater would disrupt the AMOC, which depends on a balance between fresh and salt water.

Previous studies have already shown that AMOC is slowing down due to climate change.

The engine of this conveyor belt is off the coast of Greenland, where as more ice melts due to climate change, more freshwater flows into the North Atlantic Ocean and everything slows down.

The new study predicts that an abrupt closure of the AMOC could occur in the coming decades, rather than in the coming centuries as previously thought.

The researchers designed a computer model simulation in which they could measure a sudden weakening of the ocean circulation.

The simulation introduced fresh water into the Atlantic Ocean, and as a result the circulation strength gradually decreased until it reached a critical 'tipping point' and collapsed.

According to the results, Europe's climate will cool by about 1°C per decade, with some regions even experiencing more than 3°C of cooling per decade – much faster than current global warming of about 0.36 F ( 0.2 C) per decade.

Apart from sending countries into a deep freeze, this would expand Arctic ice further south, further increase heat in the Southern Hemisphere, alter global rainfall patterns and disrupt the Amazon rainforest.

Other scientists say it would be a catastrophe that could cause global food and water shortages.

AMOC collapse: It would change weather worldwide because it means a shutdown of one of the planet's most important climate and ocean forces. Temperatures in northwestern Europe would drop by 9 to 27 degrees (5 to 15 degrees Celsius) in the coming decades

“We found that once the tipping point is reached, the conveyor belt stops within a hundred years,” the authors said.

'Heat transport towards the north is greatly reduced, leading to abrupt climate shifts.'

The only thing they couldn't identify is when exactly this tipping point will be reached, even if it will take at least decades, if not longer.

“The research makes a compelling case that the AMOC is approaching a tipping point based on a robust, physically based early warning indicator,” said Tim Lenton, chair of climate change at the University of Exeter, who was not involved in the study.

“What it cannot (and does not) say is how close the tipping point is, because it shows there is insufficient data to make a statistically reliable estimate of that.”

The research has been published in the journal Scientific progress.

What would the world look like if the Gulf Stream collapsed?

If the AMOC were to collapse, much less heat would reach Western Europe and the region would experience very harsh winters, the kind of scenario depicted in extreme fashion in the film The Day After Tomorrow.

It was relatively stable until the 1800s, but the flow decreased after the so-called 'Little Ice Age' ended in 1850.

Temperatures fell so low that the River Thames froze completely and records show Londoners crossed the waterway on foot.

The last shutdown probably occurred at the end of the last ice age, 12,000 years ago, and caused a temperature drop of 5 to 10 degrees Celsius in Western Europe.

In the event of another collapse, not only would European winters become much colder, but droughts, storms and summer heat waves would likely become more common.

Sea levels could rise nearly 20 inches around the North Atlantic basin, which surrounds the U.S. east coast.

This would ultimately push people living along the coast further inland to escape flooding. There would be widespread collapse of deep-sea ecosystems.

In the US, Florida would be particularly hard hit as water flow north would be halted, causing it to pool on the state's coastline.

An investigation published Last year we looked at the consequences that the termination of the AMOC could have specifically for Great Britain.

Researchers from the University of Exeter made a computer model and found that the weather in 2080 would be 3.4°C colder than last year.

Rainfall during the growing season is expected to decrease by 123 mm, she added.

This, Ars Technica According to reports, this is enough to reduce the UK's arable land from 32 percent to just seven percent, with major implications for food production.

The impact would not be felt in Europe and the United States, with the collapse of the AMOC also predicted to increase droughts in Africa's Sahel.

“Do you have a duvet – and when was the last time you washed it?” asked Sharon Garcia (@sharoncleanseverything).

She showed her own bedding, which was urgently needed cleaning but don't worry, she was about to reveal the family secrets.

“There are cleaning techniques that my mother taught me that I realized I haven't shared with everyone,” she said.

Sharon demonstrated her from mother reliable method.

“I fold it in like a fan — my mother called it an abanico in Spanish. I fold it under and under again and again, creating gaps between them to ensure a good deep wash,” she said.

This self-proclaimed cleaning industry CEO repeated this technique again until it looked like she had perfected her flawless folding technique.

“I do this about four times a month. I do use a duvet cover and I like to change my sheets weekly,” she says.

Even when her bedding burrito was done, her search for extra clean laundry didn't end there as she threw her now folded comforter into the washing machine.

After treating the stains with some Procyon, she added some vinegar.

As her favorite cleaning product, OxiClean white revive, ran out, she replaced the product with Arm and Hammer plus OxiClean.

“When it comes to your comforter, remember: wash it cold with a heavy load and dry it on a low temperature,” she said.

It seemed that she was definitely her mother's daughter.

She also added wool balls to speed up the drying process.

Arm and Hammer with OxiClean retails for $9.48 at Walmart and is described as providing powerful stain-removing properties and a fresh scent.

Her pro-tip product had many satisfied customers.

“Cleans well and smells great and because it has OxiClean in it, I hardly notice any stains after washing in this – unless they are old,” one buyer wrote.

“I've been using it for over five years and love it. My mother, who has used Tide all her life, switched after using it in my home. It's also a fantastic stain remover for stains,” said another customer .

“It works so great, I love it,” Sharon said.

Her fans couldn't wait to play their own cleaning game.

“Thanks for the tips!” said one follower.

“You're welcome,” she replied.

“I love it! Definitely do it!” another viewer shared.

“I never thought of folding it like that! I'll just roll it into a burrito and hope for the best,” said an onlooker.

“You are doing your best!” she replied.

Prince Harry’s flying visit to the UK shows how deep the royal rift has actually become, royal experts have claimed.

The Duke of Sussex returned to Heathrow this afternoon, just 24 hours after a transatlantic dash to see King Charles III in London following the monarch’s shock cancer diagnosis.

And the nature of his trip, in which he shared a ‘brief 45 minute meeting’ with the King and Camilla and is not believed to have seen his brother William or sister-in-law Kate Middleton, shows how bad things have really become, royal expert Jennie Bond said.

She claimed: ‘William has shown today that he has disowned Harry, he doesn’t want to know him, and he probably doesn’t even like him anymore. Harry is just not part of his life.

‘That rift is so deep now, and that has been shown by Harry being here and them not meeting, so deep that I really do wonder if it can ever, ever be mended.’

The Duke of Sussex returned to Heathrow this afternoon, just 24 hours after being driven from the same airport to Clarence House under a police escort yesterday.

Harry, 39, arrived just before 2pm – and if he is on board British Airways flight 269, due to leave at 3.05pm, he will be back in Los Angeles for 6.30pm local time.

He flew into London on a ten-hour flight from Los Angeles yesterday and arrived at the royal residence at 2.42pm before spending around 45 minutes with Charles.

They had a ‘brief meeting’ before the King and Camilla were driven to Buckingham Palace where a helicopter was waiting to take them back to Sandringham in Norfolk.

The Duke is not believed to have seen his brother William or sister-in-law Kate Middleton, who is recovering from her abdominal surgery and on extended leave.

But expert Richard Fitzwilliams suggested the fact that Prince Harry made the trip at all shows hope for reconciliation.

He told MailOnline: ‘The whole situation has changed with cancer. The fact the King has been diagnosed with something that millions know is life threatening has changed the whole relationship between the Royal Family and the Sussexes.

‘The only way for a family to fight cancer is to come together.

‘A lot has been made of the length of Harry’s visit and how quickly he left but that isn’t the point. The point is that Harry came – and Charles shared the diagnosis with him. What he wanted was to express support, it’s a completely new situation.

‘Harry is probably planning on coming over himself in the future. Charles has started outpatient treatment and was probably very tired, which may be a reason the visit was so brief.

‘I hope this could be the beginning of some form of reconciliation.

‘There was no question of him meeting William – they haven’t spoken in months and William has engagements and Catherine is recuperating.

‘And of course they don’t trust the Sussexes because in the past if they’ve said anything the comment could have ended up in a book or in the media.’

Harry had flown more than 5,000 miles yesterday from Los Angeles to London after his father informed him of his devastating diagnosis. It was their first formal meeting in person since the late Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in September 2022.

The prince did attend Charles’s coronation at Westminster Abbey in May last year but was not seen interacting with the newly crowned King and Queen.

A palace source indicated to The Times that Harry and the King’s meeting was brief because Charles was tired from a procedure on Monday.

But they said the King, 75, and Queen, 76, were ‘coping magnificently’, adding: ‘If you didn’t know what was the matter, you wouldn’t have any idea that he had any condition at all.’

While there may have been a thaw between father and son, Harry’s trip did not include a reunion with his brother Prince William.

There had been hopes that it would have been a chance for the brothers to salvage their strained relationship.

William, 41, has remained focused on tending to his wife Kate, who is recovering from her abdominal surgery and is taking extended leave from public duties until after Easter.

But the Prince of Wales returned to public work today, carrying out an investiture at Windsor Castle in the morning before later attending a gala for the London Air Ambulance Service in the evening.

William is expected to speak about his father’s cancer diagnosis for the first time.

Last night, it was claimed that Harry ‘would have gladly accepted’ a reunion with his brother William but instead has ‘spent a night in a London hotel’.

Harry, who was pictured being driven into Clarence House yesterday, did not spend the night in any royal residence, with him being effectively homeless on UK soil since his eviction from Frogmore Cottage last year.

The duke is now making his way back to his Montecito home in California, where he will be reunited with his wife Meghan Markle and two children Archie, four, and Lilibet, two, following his pit stop in London.

Harry is set to join Meghan in Canada next week for an event to commemorate a year until the Invictus Games in Vancouver and Whistler.

Although Harry and the Prince of Wales did not meet during the Duke’s stay, it is understood mutual friend Mark Dyer – who was a mentor to the princes after the death of Diana – could act as bridge between the siblings.

A source told The Times former Welsh Guards officer Mr Dyer, who recently recovered from stomach cancer, has been offering Harry support in recent years.

‘Mark can always be relied upon to talk sense into Harry and will be a stoic under-the-radar support for Harry in what has the propensity to be a stress-inducing time for him, the source said.

Those close to Harry said he would have embraced the opportunity to meet with his brother, with an insider adding: ‘The Duke’s primary reason to travel to the UK is to visit his father. If the opportunity were to arise to see the Prince of Wales then the Duke would have gladly accepted it.’

It was hoped Harry’s return to Britain could help heal wounds with King Charles and a chance to reach out to William amid years of strained relations.

Harry and Meghan abandoned royal duties in early 2020 to live in the US.

The Duke has been critical of his family in TV interviews and his book, Spare, which was published last year.

The bombshell book featured staggering insights into the prince’s relationship with his father and brother.

Harry has barely spoken with his father since the death of Queen Elizabeth II and it is reported there was no contact when he celebrated his 39th birthday in September.

Charles had called him personally to tell him the devastating news and the Duke  immediately jumped on a plane so he could get to the UK as soon as possible.

A luxury Range Rover believed to be carrying the British royal was seen arriving at LAX’s VIP terminal on Monday night and he boarded the earliest flight so he could be in London by lunchtime yesterday.

Harry was accompanied by police security despite his ongoing row with the Home Office.

In Spare, Harry had revealed that Charles had urged his warring sons: ‘Please boys, don’t make my final years a misery.’

And his trip may have been motivated by that plea.

Daily Mail Diary editor Richard Eden said yesterday that Harry and Charles held a ‘brief meeting’ before the King returned to Sandringham.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams also said: ‘I’m sure Harry will put aside the past right now for this serious issue. The Royal family – including the Sussexes – it’s so important that everyone is pulling in the right direction’.

Kristina Kyriacou, the King’s former press secretary, added: ‘Charles adores Harry. He didn’t want any of this estrangement. If out of bad news, some good news comes and Harry and the King and the Queen and his brother are reunited – how wonderful.’

The King had been taken to London from Sandringham by helicopter on Monday to begin outpatient cancer treatment.

He then spent Monday night at home in London – as family and friends revealed that the monarch remains ‘hugely positive’ following his bombshell diagnosis.

But he may miss public duties for a number of months, it has been claimed.

The King and Camilla landed back at Sandringham in Norfolk at around 4.20pm yesterday, having left London immediately after the monarch met his son, Harry.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said yesterday that he was ‘shocked and sad’ to hear about the King’s cancer diagnosis but revealed: ‘Thankfully this has been caught early’.

The King contacted both Harry and William personally to tell them of his cancer diagnosis before it was announced by Buckingham Palace at 6pm on Monday.

The Palace said doctors discovered the cancer during a medical procedure for an enlarged prostate last month. Sources have suggested that the cancer is in a different part of the King’s body but was discovered during the surgery last week.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement: ‘During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.

‘His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.

‘The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.

‘His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.’

The palace said the King ‘looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible’, but it is not yet known whether it will affect his attendance at events such as those marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day in June.

It is understood he will continue to receive red boxes and process state documents during treatment and there are no plans to appoint Counsellors of State.

A palace spokesman said: ‘Regrettably, a number of the King’s forthcoming public engagements will have to be rearranged or postponed.

‘His Majesty would like to apologise to all those who may be disappointed or inconvenienced as a consequence.’

Despite the major concerns over Charles’ health, MP Chris Bryant, who had surgery for skin cancer in March 2019, told Sky News:  ‘I think we should all calm down [about the King]. Cancer is not a death sentence.

‘The worst day was that first night. It does get better. With my treatment they cut a chunk out of the back of my head as you know. It was all very frightening and I’m still here.’

Charles has postponed all public-facing duties, but is continuing with behind-the-scenes work on his red boxes of state papers.

The confirmation of William’s return to official engagements will be seen as an attempt to signal stability within the monarchy despite the difficult times facing the royals.

William, the Queen and the Princess Royal will be the key royals holding the fort, along with the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.

The prince carried out an investiture at Windsor Castle this morning – which is one of his own regular duties – where former England footballer Ellen White was among those receiving honours.

William, who is president of the Football Association, will make the record-scoring Lioness an MBE for services to football.

Other recipients due at the ceremony include David Shreeve – who co-founded an environmental action group with TV botanist David Bellamy – and Francis Dickinson – who solved an 80-year-old maritime mystery by locating the wreck of a submarine which was lost at sea during the Second World War.

In the evening, William will attend the gala fundraising dinner for London’s Air Ambulance Charity in central London in his role as the organisation’s patron.

The gala dinner is raising funds for London’s Air Ambulance Charity’s Up Against Time appeal, which is seeking £15 million to replace the service’s helicopter fleet by the autumn.

William is a former air ambulance pilot with the East Anglian Air Ambulance and during the event will meet crew members, former patients and supporters before delivering a short speech.

Anne held the fort on the royal engagements front yesterday, carrying out an investiture on behalf of the King at Windsor Castle before visiting family-run GH Hurt & Son in Nottingham which has provided shawls for royal newborns for more than 70 years.

She is also back out today visiting the Defence Explosive Ordnance Disposal Training Regiment at St George’s Barracks in Bicester. The Princess Royal is Colonel in Chief of The Royal Logistical Corps.
