MANY of us spend hundreds of pounds on expensive skincare products in an attempt to turn back the clock.

But an age-defying woman, who is 64 years old but is often mistaken for looking decades younger, has revealed there’s no need to splash the cash… because she attributes her youthful looks to a simple eating rule.

The 64-year-old can often be seen flaunting her figure in skimpy bikinis

Harrah Brown, who often proudly shows off her slim figure in skimpy bikinis on social media, uses her platform to encourage people to “be beautiful, fit and confident at any age.”

In a recent clip posted to Instagram (@harrah.brown), she unpacks her groceries and notes how she swears by following a 90/10 rule – the 90 meaning the nutritious foods she eats, and the remaining 10% being the “naughty” foods she treats herself to during a night out.

The ageless beauty also shares the items she credits with helping her “lose menopausal belly fat and get leaner and stronger.”

In addition to the videoshe wrote: “These are the types of food I buy every week. I practice the 90/10 rule.

“90 percent nutrient-dense foods when you eat at home and 10 percent pleasure foods when you eat out.”

Fresh raspberries and frozen blueberries

Healthy items on Harrah’s shopping list include fresh and frozen berries.

Research has shown that berries can provide both brain health advantages and can improve your cognitive function along with slowing the aging process.

Writing for CNBCDr. Neil Paulvin, a longevity researcher and regenerative medicine doctor, said blueberries are high in antioxidants called anthocyanins.

These can help keep cells healthy and prevent them from becoming damaged, while also being involved in processes that repair DNA.

Olive oil

Olive oil is a well-known staple of the Mediterranean diet and has a whole host of different health advantages.

It is rich in vitamins and antioxidants and has been “associated with better skin hydration, anti-aging effects and relief from sun damage,” according to research reported by very good health.

Nuts, almond milk and freshly ground peanut butter

Harrah is also seen unpacking nuts and also almost drinks milk in her daily cup of coffee.

A handful of nuts is the favorite snack of people living in the Blue Zones, five regions around the world where people regularly reach the age of 100.

London-based nutritionist Sophie Trotman previously told Fabulous that nuts such as almonds and walnuts are all rich in vitamin E, protein and omega-3 fatty acids and contain minerals such as zinc that help with skin renewal.

“Flaxseed is particularly high in alpha-linolenic acid, a type of omega-3 fatty acid, which can also help improve the appearance of the skin over time,” she said.

Salmon and halibut

The 64-year-old also says she is a fan of eating fish for dinner as it is packed with protein.

According to a study of 4,165 participants aged 60 and over, published in the journal Springer Link, eating fish at least ‘twice a week’ can reduce the risk of mortality by as much as 42 percent.

Not only that, but salmon also gives us essential omega-3 fats, which are important for controlling blood pressure and overall heart health.

Cucumber, romaine lettuce, green cabbage and coriander

Other health essentials in the Harrah’s food store include vegetables such as cucumber, romaine lettuce, green cabbage and cilantro.

A study of Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health found that eating three servings of vegetables and two servings of fruit per day was the perfect amount for longevity.

The 64-year-old also eats some low-fat yogurt with 16 grams of protein, a small block of Gruyère cheese, chicken breast, seasoned roast beef and some limes and lemons.

“These are the types of foods I buy regularly,” concludes Harrah.

“You’ll notice that I don’t buy sweets, cookies, no cakes, no snacks, no ice cream, no processed foods.

“And for me, this is how I was able to lose my menopausal belly fat and become leaner and stronger.”

For years, people with polycystic ovary syndrome and obesity were told that their symptoms would improve if they lost weight through a restrictive diet. In 2018 a leading group of PCOS experts recommended that overweight or obese women with the hormonal disorder should consider reducing their caloric intake by up to 750 calories per day. That guidance helped with that produce questionable diet programs on social media, reinforcing the impression among people with PCOS that they would feel better if they could just successfully change their diet.

But the recommendations were not based on robust PCOS research, and researchers now say there is no solid evidence to suggest that a restrictive diet has any significant impact on PCOS symptoms in the long term. Dieting rarely leads to sustainable weight loss for anyone, and for people with PCOS, losing weight is especially difficult. In addition, the link between sustained weight loss and improved symptoms is not very clear or well established, says Julie Duffy Dillon, a registered dietitian specializing in PCOS care.

In 2023, the same group, called the International PCOS Network, revised its policy accompaniment based on a new analysis of the research and removed all references to calorie restriction. The group now recommends that people with PCOS maintain a “generally balanced and healthy diet” similar to the Mediterranean diet, which is associated with a reduced risk of health problems associated with the condition, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. It is not known whether eating this way can improve symptoms of PCOS.

The changes to the guidelines reflect “the PCOS literature and the lived experience of people with the condition,” says Dr. Helena Teede, an endocrinologist at Monash Health in Australia and lead author of the 2023 guidelines. “It is no longer about to blame or stigmatize people, or to suggest that it is their personal behavioral failure that carries more weight.”

PCOS is a hormonal condition that affects so many people five million women in the United States. It is characterized by irregular periods, infertility, excessive facial hair growth, acne and hair loss on the scalp – symptoms that are also common with other health conditions, making diagnosis difficult. People with PCOS usually ovulate less than once a month and also often have higher levels of androgens (male sex hormones) or multiple underdeveloped follicles on their ovaries (not, as the name suggests, cysts) or both.

When a woman experiences symptoms, a doctor will typically scan the ovaries to look for those follicles, or take blood to test hormone levels. There is no cure for PCOS; the first line of treatment often involves some form of contraception to help regulate the menstrual cycle.

Although PCOS is usually thought of as a reproductive problem, it can also affect metabolic health, including blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. People with PCOS often have that chronic infectionThis happens when the immune system is overstimulated for an extended period of time. And they are at higher risk for developing cardiovascular disease, endometrial cancer and diabetes, said Dr. Heather Huddleston, director of the PCOS Clinic and Research Program at the University of California, San Francisco.

The condition has also been linked to an increased risk of mental health problems depression, tension, suicide attempts And eating disorders.

The relationship between PCOS and weight is complex; the condition is strongly associated with obesity. Someone with PCOS is prone to weight gain, and when they do, their symptoms can worsen, says Dr. Anuja Dokras, director of the University of Pennsylvania Penn Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Center and co-author of the 2023 guidelines. “It’s a bidirectional relationship,” she said, but “we don’t understand why they tend to gain weight.”

The 2023 guidelines also noted that obesity rates among people with PCOS vary in different parts of the world. And, said Dr. Docras, not everyone with obesity has PCOS.

Some research has shown that weight loss through lifestyle changes could improve some hormonal and metabolic symptoms of PCOS, said Dr. Teede, but “the evidence around fertility is challenging.”

Very little studies measured changes in ovulation and pregnancy rates. “One of our biggest research questions is how much weight loss, over how much time, and how much stability of that weight we need to get the body’s reproductive system going again,” she added.

The most compelling sign that weight loss may be linked to improved ovulation and pregnancy rates comes from recent studies that looked at pregnancy outcomes of bariatric surgery in obese women with and without PCOS, said Dr. Dokras. That facts show that after surgical interventions and drastic weight loss, people with PCOS “begin to have very regular periods and male hormone levels also drop.” Research to investigate whether weight loss medications like Ozempic can improve the symptoms of PCOS patients is still ongoing.

But many women with PCOS have insulin resistance – when the body doesn’t use the insulin it produces effectively, leading to elevated blood sugar levels. This can worsen some symptoms, including weight gain, and make weight loss particularly difficult, said Dr. Huddleston.

And Ms Dillon said the old advice to restrict calories to lose weight is especially troubling given the higher rates of eating disorders among people with PCOS. Anecdotally, she said she had seen the lasting damage of the advice in many of her patients.

When people try diets “and inevitably fail because they don’t work for most people, they take responsibility for it and say, ‘Well, that’s my fault,’” Ms. Dillon said. “So then they no longer seek health care. It is not unusual for people with PCOS to meet me and tell me I am the first person they have seen in ten years.”

At that point, she added, “they have many different health problems, like diabetes and high cholesterol, but they are also ashamed, depressed and anxious.”

A fitness model has revealed how her life drastically changed after adopting the ‘carnivore’ diet for an entire month.

Petrina Barber, 41, who splits her time between London and Dubai, decided to cut out all processed foods and carbohydrates to help with her stoma output.

The mother-of-one became an awareness campaigner and founded her business Beyond The Stoma after treatment for cervical cancer nine years ago led to her needing a stoma bag.

With her new diet, that involved eating only meat, fish, eggs and a little cheese, Petrina said she wasn’t aiming to lose weight but instead was looking to improve her athletic performance energy levels by solely eating animal products.

Before going on the diet, rice, sourdough, jam doughnuts, and chocolate were favourites in her life – and the initial days saw her struggle without having her go-to snacks.

Petrina after four weeks on the carnivore diet

But after just one week, Petrina said she lost weight, her craving for snacks disappeared, her sleep improved and people said she looked healthier.

Writing for FEMAIL, she delves into the struggles and positives of the diet week-by-week…

First week

In the first week of starting the diet, I found myself faced with immediate challenges.

On the very first day, we were engaged in an all-day activity with my son, surrounded by the temptation of burgers and fries. I hadn’t adequately prepared for this diet transition, and my usual diet leaned heavily on good carbs.

As a result, I quickly realised the need to increase my intake of quality-sourced protein and consequently, calories. Those initial days were tough, I was underprepared, lacked meal planning, and struggled to come up with food ideas. On top of that, I had an awful headache and just a general feeling of tiredness.

I soon realised that I was a snacker. I usually had a slice of toast or a jam doughnut almost every day, and without those now on the menu, I had to think through my options. Snacking on meat didn’t seem appealing at first, and what I learned was that it was important to fill yourself up at each individual meal.

Beef carpaccio was on the menu

A typical lunch was made up of steak and eggs

After the first few days, my cravings vanished, along with the dips in energy that would often follow my previous snacking habits. It dawned on me that I no longer desired snacks while following the carnivore diet, I found myself constantly full and content.

WHAT IS THE CARNIVORE DIET? AND IS IT SAFE?

Followers of the carnivore diet typically eat just meat, with no carbohydrates, vegetables, fruit, grains or nuts. Some also have dairy and fish.

Experts argue followers of such an eating regimen miss out on fibre, antioxidants and vitamins. Lacking in these nutrients can affect a person’s immunity, digestion, circulation and cognitive function.

Eliminating most of the major food groups does cause many carnivore dieters to lose weight, however, it can also lead to constipation.

Due to meat being rich in protein and fat, many followers claim they feel fuller for longer, even though they are missing out on vital nutrients.

Experts claim followers of such a diet may initially feel better due to them cutting out sugar and processed food. Yet such eating plans are often unsustainable, causing dieters to feel frustrated and defeated.

Among those who take it one step further and eat raw red meat, they are putting themselves at risk of food poisoning if they become infected with bacteria like Salmonella.

Some experts have warned against the meat-only diet, with excessive amounts of red meat previously linked to bowel cancer.

The NHS states: ‘Red meat – such as beef, lamb and pork – is a good source of protein, vitamins and minerals, and can form part of a balanced diet. But eating a lot of red and processed meat probably increases your risk of bowel (colorectal) cancer.

‘That’s why it’s recommended that people who eat more than 90g (cooked weight) of red and processed meat per day cut down to 70g, as this could help reduce your risk of bowel cancer.’

Within the initial four days, I lost 2kg, and though I ultimately lost a total of 4kg, my weight eventually stabilised.

Since I hadn’t aimed to lose weight, I shifted my focus to maintaining it. This was a natural progression for me, and I had no desire to continue losing weight beyond what my body naturally adjusted to.

I felt terrible during week one. I was exhausted – I thought it might be the case for a few days, but not as long as it went on. I still had a pounding headache and a foggy memory.

But I was fully aware it takes one to two weeks to transition your body to the new diet as it needs to reconfigure how you get glucose from switching fuel supplies.

I was still training at the gym, and my workouts were at the same level as they were previously, so I saw no difference in training performance even though I felt tired.

On day five, I received vitamin D and B12 shots and underwent blood work. I opt for injections as my body, due to health issues and pelvic radiation disease, struggles to absorb supplements orally.

Some people do not deal well with fibre, especially after bowel resection, so I gave up fruits and vegetables around two years ago.

It’s common with certain medical conditions they exacerbate symptoms and so the definition of a ‘healthy’ diet is always relative ultimately.

Despite a common belief suggesting potential nutritional deficiencies, regular blood tests have shown no issues as long as I maintain my B12 and VitD shots. I believe it’s perfectly plausible to eliminate them from a diet and still be healthy. Everyone is just different.

The first weekend on the diet was so hard. I wanted to eat the usual foods I associate with family time on weekends, especially doughnuts.

I also could have eaten better choices at lunch because they were too low in fat. Chicken and egg whites didn’t make me as full, so while it was enjoyable, I struggled with not feeling full afterward.

Then I had to make avocado toast for my son, and I wanted to eat some. I love the taste of avocado and carbs. When we got home I felt tired and lacking any energy and I struggled not to have a jam doughnut. It was more out of habit and fatigue rather than a genuine desire.

Later, we went out for dinner, and it was incredible. I indulged in beef carpaccio and steak, leaving me feeling very satisfied and full.

Lunch was beef mince with cheese and three eggs

Petrina resorted to McDonald's burgers when she was out of the house for a longer period of time

Petrina would sometimes have beef mince with cheese and three eggs (left) for lunch but once had to resort to McDonald’s burgers (right) when she was out of the house for longer than expected

Second week

In week two, I found it easier to fall asleep and remain asleep. Already, I noticed changes in how my clothes fit. I appeared leaner with more muscle definition.

I read lots of advice suggesting daily exercise during the diet. However, I did the opposite and pulled back on my workouts to conserve energy but increased the intensity of the workouts and have more active rest and recovery time instead.

This helped me stick to the routine and make it through the early days of the diet feeling less fatigued because I knew I wasn’t running myself into the ground. My workouts were powerful, consisting of weight training three times a week and one cardio session.

I went out for lunch with a group to socialise and it was easy to select food without standing out like I needed to eat certain foods.

I simply modified some starters and had a large steak for lunch. I didn’t look or feel like a social pariah. That was a huge benefit. I had more comments with lunch on how well I looked.

I had no cravings after lunch for dessert or anything sweet, which usually happens to me. But, while my husband was stuffed after lunch,  I needed to eat more. So, I had some quick-to-cook burgers.

While it wasn't her intention to lose weight, Petrina noticed an overall weight loss of 4kg, as well as a brighter complexion

Third week

Knowing what I’m going to eat, planning in advance and buying the food ahead of time helped me stick to the diet more easily this week.

But I was shocked at how easy it is actually to under eat. I started the diet by tracking what I ate, and I am glad that I did because it showed me I was way off the mark.

I wasn’t picking the right foods initially. I’m on the diet for stoma output and because I believe it will have implications for my overall health – not to lose weight.

That said, anyone switching to a carnivore diet would experience significant decreases in weight, as it’s very, very hard to overeat on this diet when you cut out all processed food and carbs. My concern was that I would drop too much weight, but the fact that I have found equilibrium is encouraging.

I love the food. It felt relatively easy for me to eat protein all day, every day, as it’s my favourite type of food.

Fourth week

For my final week, the people around me were full of compliments. Two people noticed my skin was much brighter and commented on my face. My husband said I look healthier.

At the end of the month, I am active overall and doing three high-performance strength training sessions a week. I dropped cardio. I have a lot of energy, and that’s no longer an issue but I do not want to lose more weight.

Petrina had to make most of her food from scratch, including burgers (pictured)

Another lunch of choice was burgers with cheese

If you’re going to stick to the carnivore diet, you need to get into the habit of making your own food from scratch, said the fitness model. Petrina made her own burgers (left) which she ate with cheese (right) for lunch

Since meal prep was such a big part of the carnivore diet, Petrina doubts that you'd be able to make it through a day, let alone a week, if you're not willing to spend time in the kitchen

Since meal prep was such a big part of the carnivore diet, Petrina doubts that you’d be able to make it through a day, let alone a week, if you’re not willing to spend time in the kitchen

I don’t get those periods of hunger or need to snack anymore. I used to eat breakfast, and I would want something afterwards, like another slice of toast. Or I would have dinner and want something sweet afterward.

I’ve found that I don’t have cravings, which is shocking because rice, sourdough, jam doughnuts, and some chocolate were daily staples in my diet. I thought I would be folding under the pressure of wanting a jam doughnut by now, but I’m doing OK.

I have realised how organised you need to be on this diet. I am usually very organised when it comes to food, but if you don’t plan and prepare, you are unlikely to make it through one day, let alone a week. It’s not a diet where food is easily accessible in an emergency. You can’t just pick a sandwich up and eat the filling.

Like with any diet, you’ll probably already have some entrenched habits that will be hard to break. For me, there was a lot around the weekends, and I associate eating with my family, so that was very difficult.

The carnivore diet is no joke, especially with the difficulty of the first few weeks and the side effects. I can understand why many people abandon the diet or find it too challenging.

But for me, overall, I felt it was a huge success, and I am sticking to the diet for the foreseeable future.

Hafthor Bjornsson, better known as ‘The Mountain’ from Game of Thrones, has revealed how he maintains his ultra-muscular physique – and that includes eating four steaks and 5 pounds of rice a day.

The 35-year-old former World’s Strongest Man, who played a bone-crushing character in the hit TV series, consumes three meals and three snacks a day, totaling 8,000 calories.

The Icelander said they are crucial to maintaining his huge physique – with the 6-foot-4 strongman weighing 423 pounds.

While his calorie intake is far from the recommendation of 2,000 calories per day for women and 2,500 per day for men, it is less than the 10,000 daily calories he ate in 2018 when he took home the title of World’s Strongest Man took.

The above image shows what Hafthor Bjornsson devours in one day, including four steaks and five pounds of rice

Mr Bjornsson’s diet is part of his training regime for the 2024 Arnold Strongman Classic competition, which he won three times between 2018 and 2020.

The competition will be held next month in Columbus, Ohio, and will involve men transporting wood bolted together up an inclined ramp, carrying heavy concrete objects over a four-foot beam and lifting a 400-pound rock up to their shoulders.

About how he consumes so many calories every day, he said: ‘What helps is that when I eat, I consider this my work.

“I stay off my phone… By doing that, I eat my food faster.”

People who eat food faster are more likely to eat more, doctors say, because there is about a 20-minute delay between the time the stomach becomes full and the brain sends signals to stop eating.

Revealing his daily meal plan in one Youtube videoBjornsson said that every morning starts with three eggs, 1 pound of cooked rice, half a cup of strawberries and two cups of milk.

He also has a shake that consists of a cup of orange juice, almost a cup of Skyr yogurt, and half a cup of blueberries.

He then returns to the kitchen for a ‘snack’ of a 100 gram steak, almost two more cups of rice, half a cup of vegetables and an avocado.

He eats the same thing for lunch, but skips the avocado, before washing it all down with another shake without the blueberries.

He also has plenty of water and electrolytes, which come from products like Reign Total Body Fuel. The product contains 300 milligrams of caffeine and essential vitamins.

Mr Bjornsson says these are crucial to ensuring his muscles don’t cramp and that there are enough nutrients in his body.

After every meal, he makes sure to do at least 10 minutes of light exercise and a cold dip, as he says this helps with his digestion.

But Mr Bjornsson doesn’t stop there. Then he gets a ‘snack’ of two cups of milk and a jelly sandwich with peanut butter.

He also eats banana slices.

For dinner he has another 1,369 calories – consisting of a pound of rice, a 150 gram steak and half a cup of beans.

Just before going to bed, he eats another snack: another 100 gram steak, a pound of rice and half a cup of vegetables, as well as half an avocado.

After his day of eating, Mr Bjornsson said: ‘I feel satisfied and I feel full.

He added that his extensive menus are prepared by his father Bjorn Reynisson.

On some days the menu varies slightly – with Mr Bjornsson known to be a fan of ice cream, pizza, burgers and sushi.

After breakfast and a quick workout, he returns to the kitchen for a 'snack' of a 100 gram steak, almost two cups of rice, half a cup of vegetables and an avocado.

He added: ‘There is nothing more boring than eating food you don’t like.’

Although he has detailed his intense diet, Mr Bjornsson has not revealed his training routine for the 2024 Arnold Strongman competition.

A personal record he achieved as part of his fitness routine includes a squat of 1,000 pounds – more than four times what the average man can lift – and a bench press of 550 pounds – or three times what the average man can lift.

The strongman suffered a serious injury in April last year after tearing his pectoral muscles – those in his chest – while attempting to set a new personal best in the bench press.

He lifted the 556-pound weight, but as he lowered the barbell tore his pecs — which he said caused a loud popping sound. Men’s health.

The injury was so serious that he had to stop training for almost three months. He had surgery the following month to repair it, but developed an infection as a result, leaving a large scar on his chest.

Mr. Bjornsson has been intensively involved in strength training since his youth and worked with his father on the family farm.

Initially he was part of the Icelandic basketball team, but after several ankle injuries he started lifting weights in 2006.

Since then, he has won the Icelandic Strongman competition nine years in a row and earned the title of ‘World’s Strongest Man’ in 2018.

He has also won the Arnold Strongman competition three times and the European Strongman competition five times.

A man ‘obsessed with becoming a father’ has lost almost half his body weight by eating a ‘carnivore’ diet consisting only of meat and eggs in a bid to improve his fertility.

Isaiah Caldwell, 28, from St. Louis, Missouri, weighed 434 pounds at his heaviest weight, but has now lost a whopping 210 pounds.

He started changing his lifestyle after being told his weight could cause fertility problems – and now weighs 220 pounds and feels ‘a million times better’.

Tech salesman Isaiah lost weight by exercising and following the strict carnivore diet, in which followers abandon anything that doesn’t come from an animal, leaving them with meat, eggs and dairy products.

Isaiah, who stands 6ft tall, is now happier and healthier than ever and he and his wife Amanda, 29, are still trying to have a baby.

Isaiah said: “Having a baby became an obsession of ours – we were very excited about it.

‘We started trying for a year before we started to suspect there might be some fertility issues.

“I knew if I could do anything to give us a chance, I would do it.”

Isaiah vowed to shed the pounds and immediately went on a diet, dropping all food groups except meat, eggs and dairy.

Isaiah said, “People think there’s magic in it.

‘But the reality is that you’re just eliminating overeating because it’s very difficult to eat meat – it’s very restrictive and probably not for everyone.’

Isiah lost 21 pounds after just a month by eating steak and smoked brisket – and said he was ‘blown away’.

He decided to stay on the carnivore diet for another month, losing another 18 pounds, and continued until he lost only 368 pounds.

Does weight loss improve fertility in men?

According to the NHS, eating a healthy, balanced diet and maintaining a healthy weight are essential to keeping sperm in good condition.

A healthy BMI and eating a healthy diet, of at least 5 servings of a variety of fruits and vegetables per day, eating strachy foods and beans and legumes can help with a healthy diet.

He said: ‘I felt incredible, even a week later – psychologically I felt so much better, my brain fog was completely gone. I felt a million times better.

“But I knew I couldn’t last forever just eating meat.”

After ten months, he had lost a whopping 118 pounds after expanding his diet to include some fruits and dairy products.

Once the weight loss started to slow, Isaiah decided to look deeper into bodybuilders’ training regimens and began meticulously tracking his calorie intake.

He lost another 35 pounds, bringing his total weight loss to 140 pounds.

Isaiah then continued his calorie deficit to continue losing weight and is now around 210 pounds.

And he said, ‘If anyone thinks they might not be able to do it, they should know that I felt exactly the same way.

‘It felt impossible and hopeless, but everyone is capable of that.’

WHAT IS THE CARNIVOR DIET? AND IS IT SAFE?

Followers of the carnivore diet typically eat only meat, without carbohydrates, vegetables, fruits, grains or nuts. Some also have dairy and fish.

Experts claim that followers of such a diet miss out on fiber, antioxidants and vitamins. A deficiency in these nutrients can affect a person’s immunity, digestion, circulation and cognitive function.

Eliminating most major food groups does help many carnivores lose weight, but it can also lead to constipation.

Because meat is rich in protein and fat, many followers claim they feel full longer, even though they’re missing out on essential nutrients.

Experts claim that followers of such a diet may initially feel better because they are cutting out sugar and processed foods. Yet such eating plans are often unsustainable, leaving dieters feeling frustrated and defeated.

Those who take it a step further and eat raw red meat run the risk of food poisoning if they become contaminated with bacteria such as Salmonella.

Some experts have warned against a meat-only diet, with excessive amounts of red meat previously linked to bowel cancer.

The NHS states: ‘Red meat – such as beef, lamb and pork – is a good source of protein, vitamins and minerals and can be part of a balanced diet. But eating a lot of red and processed meat likely increases your risk of colon (colorectal) cancer.

‘It is therefore recommended that people who eat more than 90 grams (cooked weight) of red and processed meat per day reduce this to 70 grams as this may help reduce the risk of bowel cancer.’

Isaiah and Amanda will have to return to the doctors in the coming months to see if his efforts have affected his fertility.

Isaiah said: ‘We are very optimistic – I will do tests, but I have increased the chances from zero to at least something

“I’m in the best shape of my life and we’re excited to find a way to be parents no matter what.”

The trend of simple food diets is becoming increasingly popular – thanks in part to social media sensations like bodybuilder Eddie Abbew, who posts videos of himself eating boiled eggs and liver.

It has also been popularized by internet personalities such as Jordan Peterson and podcast host Joe Rogan, who have touted its benefits to their army of followers.

But some experts have warned that diets that include high amounts of red meat could lead to an increased risk of a host of life-threatening diseases, including cancer, heart and kidney disease.

Meanwhile, the diet may cause participants not to get enough vitamin C, which can lead to scurvy.

Choosing Healthy Fats: Nutritionist Reveals 7 High-Fat Foods You MUST Include in Your Diet

Fats are a macronutrient found in food and are essential for the body's energy, skin and hair health, vitamin absorption and body insulation. They provide essential fatty acids for brain development, control of inflammation and blood clotting, and help fill fat cells and retain body heat. In addition to carbohydrates and proteins, they are a crucial nutrient that the body needs in large quantities.

Healthy high-fat foods are helpful for integrating flavor and palate satisfaction. Fats consumed whole are rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals, making food tasty and healthy. Fats play a crucial role in basic functions such as cell growth, brain development and digestion. They also keep us full and satisfied longer. Many good fat sources are naturally rich in essential nutrients such as fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals.

Types of fat

Unsaturated fats: Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats are liquid at room temperature and healthy for the heart, as long as they have certain properties, such as a high smoke point, and are rich in antioxidants. Rice bran oil, rich in Gamma Oryzanol and Vitamin E, is one such example.

Saturated fats: Fat found in non-vegetarian options and butter, as well as coconut and palm oil, is often considered unhealthy for heart health, but research shows that some sources may be beneficial for our health. Desi Ghee and coconut oil offer many benefits when consumed in moderate amounts, keeping in mind that there are no pre-existing medical conditions.

Vaibhav Garg, Clinical Nutritionist and Founder of Purecise spoke to India.com and discussed a list of foods that are good sources of healthy consumable fats.

7 Healthy, High-Fat Foods You Should Always Consume

Rice bran oil

Several studies indicate that rice bran oil is better than other oils, even though it has been refined to remove all impurities. The nutritional profile surpasses any cold-pressed oil version, as it scores very high on the antioxidant profile as mentioned above, and has a high tolerance to heat. Rice bran oil contains healthy fats, making it a heart-healthy choice.

Coconuts

Being a tropical country, coconuts grow in abundance in our country. It is one of the most underutilized superfoods. Not only is it an excellent source of good fats and medium chain triglycerides (MCT) that provide us with quick energy, but it also contains plenty of fiber, you can make milk from the pulp and oil even has antiseptic properties, making it an excellent solution is. for healing cuts and wounds.

Desi Ghee

Is Ghee the bad guy? The answer is a big NO. Doctors themselves have been confused over the years and sometimes ask you to consume it, sometimes not, because their knowledge does not come from the educational aspect but is purely based on hearsay. Desi ghee should be consumed in small quantities due to its anti-inflammatory effect on the system. Great for increasing your good cholesterol and immunity levels too.

Olive oil

Research shows that olive oil, a healthy fat, can lower the risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Its components, including oleic acid and secoiridoids, protect the body and slow down the aging process. Extra virgin olive oil, extracted naturally and requiring less processing, provides the most health benefits. But remember: it is best to consume this raw or with minimal heating.

Tree nuts

Tree nuts are a nutritious snack containing amino acids (simplified proteins), vitamin E and unsaturated fatty acids. A 2018 study found that they lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. To stay healthy, people should choose raw or soaked nuts whenever possible. They are great as a snack and will keep you satiated while providing plenty of nutrients.

Nut butter

Nut butters, such as those made with almonds, peanuts and cashews, are nutritious because of their monounsaturated fats, which have been linked to a reduction in cholesterol levels. Nut butter with nuts as the only ingredient can help you stay full and satisfied. To reduce sugar intake, one can opt for nut butter with nuts and organic cane sugar as the only other ingredient.

Seeds

Often overlooked as a garnish, seeds are nutritional powerhouses. They are rich in polyunsaturated fats such as omega-3 fatty acids, which suppress inflammation. These seeds are also a good source of protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals such as vitamin E, iron and magnesium. For example, pumpkin seeds help keep blood sugar levels in balance.

Before I began a career in science some ten years ago, I was a chef on a super yacht and my job was to provide delicious but nutritious food.

These days I am just as passionate about the joy good flavours can bring, but thanks to my job as a scientist and dietitian working at the cutting edge of nutrition research I can combine that with an insight into how what you eat can affect your health.

And one of the areas where diet can have a major effect is on cholesterol.

Look, for example, at research into the Portfolio Diet — based on eating cholesterol-lowering foods, including plenty of fibre and protein from mainly plant sources, including nuts. This can lower cholesterol as much as statins, according to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2005.

That’s not to say statins aren’t effective in reducing cholesterol levels — they are — but, for some people, the right foods can be too. The problem is that raised cholesterol — like high blood pressure — is a silent killer; typically there aren’t any symptoms until the damage is done.

Before Dr Leeming began a career in science some ten years ago, she was a chef on a super yacht and her job was to provide delicious but nutritious food

I was shocked by recent figures from NHS Digital which showed 61 per cent of women and 56 per cent of men have high cholesterol — and without a blood test many will be unaware of the risk it poses.

Levels build more easily over the age of 40 (as your body becomes less efficient at clearing it) but raised cholesterol can be a problem at any age, and the longer it is left unchecked, the more likely it is to cause problems.

High levels can clog your major arteries, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. Excess cholesterol can also contribute to diseases that block smaller blood vessels to the arms and legs, which can lead to leg pain and ulcers. Virtually any artery can be affected and if the cholesterol blocks small vessels supplying the penis, for example, it can even lead to erectile difficulties.

But not all cholesterol is bad. While some comes from what we eat, about 80 per cent is made in the liver, as cholesterol is needed to form cell walls and is a vital component of many important hormones, such as oestrogen and testosterone.

There are two main types of cholesterol: ‘bad’ LDL (low-density lipoprotein) which can lodge in your blood vessel walls, forming fatty deposits which can obstruct blood flow; and ‘good’ HDL (high-density lipoprotein) which carries excess LDL back to the liver where it is recycled or removed in waste.

There are two main types of cholesterol: ‘bad’ LDL (low-density lipoprotein) which can lodge in your blood vessel walls, forming fatty deposits which can obstruct blood flow

Ideally you want to keep LDL levels down and your HDL up (although with HDL, the latest thinking is that you can have too much of a good thing and after a certain level the benefits reduce).

It’s a good idea to get your levels checked. Total cholesterol should be below 5mmol/L and LDL below 3mmol/L. If your levels are raised you may be prescribed statins.

Here I guide you through how diet can help lower cholesterol.

Learn to love kimchi…

The health of your gut micro- biome — the community of bacteria, yeast and viruses in your gut — can, among other health benefits, have a significant effect on your cholesterol levels, and the more diverse that community the better. That was the finding of research I co-authored with colleagues at King’s College London, published in Nature Medicine in 2021.

It’s thought that your gut bacteria convert bad cholesterol into coprostanol — a non-absorbable, waxy solid that’s then excreted.

One way you can support your gut bacteria is by eating foods that contain fibre: when they feast on fibre the bacteria produce a by-product, short-chain fatty acids, which help the liver remove LDL from the blood.

The healthier and more diverse your gut microbiome, the better your cholesterol levels should be — so eat more of the fibrous food these microbes love.

The benefits are clear: consuming just 7g more fibre a day is linked to 6 per cent lower risk of heart disease and stroke.

Another way to support your gut bacteria is by eating live fermented foods such as kimchi (made from fermented cabbage with spices)

However, on average we eat only 60 per cent of our recommended 30g fibre a day. So aim to have fruit and veg with every meal, snack on nuts and seeds and eat wholegrains daily.

Another way to support your gut bacteria is by eating live fermented foods such as kimchi (made from fermented cabbage with spices) which, as well as being a source of fibre, is itself a source of friendly bacteria.

For one study 100 people ate exactly the same food for a week — but half also had 15g (i.e. a spoonful) of kimchi daily, while the other half had 210g (a small bowl) daily for seven days.

At the end of the week both had significantly lower levels of bad LDL cholesterol. However, the group eating the most kimchi had the biggest reduction, reported the Journal of Medicinal Food in 2013.

…and legumes

If you want to do just one other thing to improve your health, eat legumes. Chickpeas, kidney beans, black beans and lentils are fantastic in so many ways, including reducing cholesterol.

They are high in soluble fibre which swells in the water in the gut, forming a gel that encases bile acids (which help with the digestion and absorption of fat).

These acids also contain LDL cholesterol, so encasing them also removes them from the body, meaning more LDL is excreted.

Eating 130g of legumes a day — that’s less than half a can — may reduce LDL cholesterol by 5 per cent, according to a review in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, published in 2014.

Switch to filter (or instant) coffee

There has been contradictory research around coffee and cholesterol, but it’s thought it may lower the production of bile acids, reducing how much LDL is excreted from the body.

Coffee beans contain oil-based compounds including cafestol which some evidence has suggested may increase cholesterol.

A number of studies found that 10mg cafestol raises cholesterol (largely LDL) by about 0.13mm/L and a cup of unfiltered coffee has roughly 3-6mg of cafestol.

So, if you’re a big coffee drinker and worried about cholesterol levels, you might be better switching to filter (filtering catches the cafestol) — or even instant, which contains negligible amounts.

If you’re wedded to your cafetiere, just don’t leave the coffee to brew too long as the longer the water is in touch with the grinds, the more cafestol it contains.

Try plant-based spreads

Plant sterols and stanols are compounds found in foods such as vegetable oils, veg and nuts that are natural cholesterol busters.

They have a similar structure to cholesterol and compete with it for absorption at entry points in the gut.

The more sterols and stanols, the less cholesterol can be absorbed.

Eating 2g a day can reduce your LDL cholesterol by up to 12 per cent when eaten regularly, according to some studies.

It is, however, quite hard to get the 2g from natural sources (you’d need to eat about five handfuls of walnuts or five heads of broccoli) — but you can get enough in one hit with foods such as yoghurt or butter replacement spreads with added stanols or sterols.

Avoid instant oats and go jumbo

Oats are well known to help lower cholesterol, but how much they help depends on the type.

Oats contain a form of soluble fibre called beta glucan which forms a gel in the gut that helps reduce the absorption of cholesterol.

However highly ground oats (e.g. instant oats) will provide less beta glucan than the groats (oats with the kernel intact), jumbo or large (or steel cut) oats.

Usually the longer they take to cook, the better they are for you.

Eating 3g of beta glucan a day reduces LDL cholesterol levels by about 7 per cent. An average 40g bowl of standard porridge oats contains around 2g.

You can increase your intake by adding barley to stews, for instance, or using it in place of rice, snacking on oatcakes, or eating rye bread.

Cut back on butter

In general, eating too much saturated fat blocks the work of receptors in the liver that attract LDL cholesterol in the blood and break it down.

However, not all saturated fat is equal. Some dairy, such as butter and cream, raise LDL more than cheese or other fermented dairy, such as yoghurt and kefir.

One theory with cheese is that even though it has similar amounts of fat to butter its molecular structure means the fat binds to the calcium in it, making it harder for enzymes to break it down, so less saturated fat enters the bloodstream.

Like kefir and yoghurt it is also thought to feed ‘good’ gut bacteria, resulting in higher HDL. A study of 47 people who swapped butter for olive oil in cooking found their LDL dropped on average by 6 per cent, reported the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2015.

Make it a green cuppa

Drinking green tea regularly can ‘significantly’ lower LDL levels, concluded a review of 31 trials in the Nutrition Journal in 2020.

It said high levels of catechins — a type of antioxidant — in green tea encourage the body to excrete LDL and limit the formation of fatty plaques in the blood vessels.

On average you need to drink two cups a day to benefit.

Go nuts for almonds

Regularly eating tree nuts such as walnuts, Brazil nuts or cashews cuts LDL cholesterol by between 3 and 19 per cent, reported the journal Nutrition Review in 2011. Evidence suggests you need to eat one to two handfuls a day to benefit. One study found eating about two handfuls a day of almonds cut cholesterol by 9 per cent.

Nuts are a good source of healthy fats which can raise HDL. They’re also a useful source of fibre and contain vitamin E, helping neutralise some of the harmful effects of LDL. I keep a jar by the kettle to snack on while making tea.
