Spice Girl Mel B has revealed she no longer has fans shouting ‘Okay Scary’ at her in the street, but has women opening up to her in supermarkets about their experiences of domestic violence.

The singer has been campaigning on the issue for several years after filing for divorce from Hollywood film producer Stephen Belafonte in March 2017, following abuse allegations that he has repeatedly denied.

Mel has since been awarded an MBE in 2022 for services to charities and vulnerable women and became a Patron of Women’s Aid in 2018.

Speaking to mark the 50th anniversary of Women’s Aid on this year’s International Women’s Day on Friday, Mel revealed that women now always open up to her and she even gets stopped in supermarkets.

Mel confessed: ‘It used to be like, ‘Okay Scary’, now I get women literally coming up to me in tears and telling me their stories when I’m in Aldi or Sainsbury’s.

‘Now it’s more of a conversation. It’s not really the conversation you want to have, but I’m so glad I get to experience it and talk about it.’

Mel spoke on a panel alongside Farah Nazeer, CEO of Women’s Aid, and Amanda Cupples, Airbnb’s Managing Director for Northern Europe.

Victoria Newton, editor of The Sun, hosted the event at a members club in London, and they discussed the importance of tackling domestic violence and creating safe spaces for survivors in the workplace.

Mel claimed her ex was banned from the set of America’s Got Talent by Simon Cowell while she was a judge on the show because she ‘acted nervous’ when he was there.

She said: ‘Work was the safest place I could ever be because I knew he couldn’t reach me at work because Simon Cowell banned him from appearing on set because he realized I was acting nervous or nervous then my then husband was nearby. wouldn’t be my authentic self.’

Mel said HR teams need to learn to look for signs of domestic violence to help others.

She told the panel that she would stay on set for another hour or two after they finished filming because she “didn’t want to go home” and if there was someone at work who could have “supported her every now and then,” I would have done that. I probably felt like I could have talked about it a lot sooner.”

Speaking about domestic violence, she said: ‘It just has to stop and it won’t stop unless we do something about it.’

Mel confessed, “It used to be like this "Okay, scary"now I get women who literally come up to me in tears and tell me their stories when I'm in Aldi or Sainsbury's.

When asked what it means to her to be a patron of Women’s Aid, Mel replied: ‘I still have to pinch myself.’

She continued, “Women are the strongest form of human being ever because we are resilient, but we are not as resilient if we are not believed, heard and supported.”

Mel described feeling “so at home” when she visited a shelter with Women’s Aid, adding that she received therapy there.

Farah said that as the charity enters its sixth decade, it wants to ‘create a society where domestic violence is not tolerated’.

She said: ‘It’s no longer society’s dirty little secret, it’s something that is talked about but it won’t be tolerated, it’s unacceptable and when people see it they break the barriers of what should be personal and private. ‘

Farah said employers can “raise awareness, change the culture, implement policies and training that normalizes the fact that domestic violence is not tolerated, that it can be talked about, and provide mechanisms for people to seek help.”

Hardik Pandya has been retained on his Grade A contract despite not being in action since the 2023 ODI World Cup last year.

Hardik Pandya last played for India during the 2023 ODI World Cup.

New Delhi: At a time when the cricket fraternity is talking about the omissions of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer in the recently announced BCCI Central Contracts, there have been a lot of discussions about Hardik Pandya. The India all-rounder, who last played for the Men in Blue during the 2023 ODI World Cup in November, has been retained in Class A. Pandya, who injured his ankle against Bangladesh, recently returned to action for the first time in DY Patil T20 tournament earlier this week.

The removal of Kishan and Iyer from the contract list comes after the duo denied playing in the Ranji Trophy despite being fit, thus disrespecting BCCI’s directive to play domestic cricket when not playing for the national team. In Pandya’s case, he plays only white-ball cricket for India. His last Test match for India was in 2017, while his last appearance for Baroda in the state was in 2018 in a Ranji Trophy match.

It is clear that Hardik’s has been given the A contract, subject to some conditions. According to a report in Indian Express, Hardik had to give an undertaking that if he is not part of the Indian white-ball team despite being fit later this year, the Mumbai Indians captain will have to represent his state in the Syed. Mushtaq Ali T20s and Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Unlike Kishan and Iyer, what worked for Pandya was that he continued to report to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) from time to time when required. The 30-year-old was recently seen training with Vadodara before appearing in the T20 competition in Mumbai.

  • The footy pundit was acquitted and found himself in Las Vegas

Paul Kent returned to TV screens on Thursday as the footy journalist sat alongside Braith Anasta for the first NRL360 show of the 2024 season.

Kent was withdrawn from his News Corp newspaper column and role in NRL360 in 2023 after being charged with common assault and intentionally strangling a person without consent.

He was found not guilty of charges that he attacked and strangled his then partner Lucy Kennedy, 33, at his home in inner Sydney on December 12.

After a two-day hearing at Downing Center Local Court in Sydney, Magistrate Daniel Reiss told the court he could not find the charges proven beyond reasonable doubt.

A relieved Kent said he could “finally get back to my normal life” after the court ordeal, after driving limousines for a Sydney funeral company while awaiting trial, making his return in spectacular surroundings, with the NRL world eagerly awaiting the Las Vegas funeral. Vegas extravaganza this weekend.

Kent was on a panel alongside Anasta, footy legend Gorden Tallis and pundit Buzz Rothfield, with the NRL360 presenter first turning to his old sparring partner Kent for his thoughts on the Sin City curtain-raiser.

“It’s pretty special, isn’t it,” Kent said. “I’ve been covering the game for a long time and I’ve never seen anything like it. I’m quite impressed by the atmosphere there and how people react to it.’

There was no mention of the domestic violence case, nor did Anasta acknowledge that Kent had been away.

After he was acquitted in December, Kent said: ‘The judge accepted what had happened, to the point that my lawyer was not even required to issue a final demand notice.

‘It’s been seven months that I’ve had to sit there and feel like I’ve been wrongly arrested [and] wrongfully accused, and I’ve had to sit there and watch our public reputation torn apart by people who used it as an opportunity.

‘Finally the truth is out there. It has cost me a lot, it has been a major setback in my life. But we all have our problems in life.

“This is my thing at the moment, so it’s now up to me to regroup and get back to my normal life. I can finally put this all behind me.’

Former Brisbane Broncos, Queensland and Kangaroos enforcer Tallis covered Kent’s position on NRL360 as he was stood down.

Three episodes of NRL360 will air from Vegas starting tonight and will reach tens of millions of homes across the United States, with the show airing during prime time on the main Fox channel.

In addition to the NRL360 episodes, a live show featuring Matty Johns, Bryan Fletcher, Nathan Hindmarsh and Tallis will be broadcast from outside Resort World, where the players from the four teams will be based.

Fox Sports has also sent Andrew Voss and Dan Ginnane to cover the two matches.

In the British parliament, lawmakers jeered, booed and stormed out of the House of Commons to protest the speaker’s handling of a vote calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. Outside, a crowd of pro-Palestinian protesters projected the slogan “From the River to the Sea” onto the facade of Big Ben, drawing criticism from those who see it as a rallying cry for the eradication of Israel.

The chaotic scenes in London last week showed how Israel’s war in Gaza is reverberating far beyond the Middle East. From the United States to Europe, the brutal October 7 attack by Hamas militants and Israel’s devastating response have inflamed passions, upended politics and heightened tensions within the Muslim and Jewish communities.

The fighting is not just about intractable issues such as war, peace and moral justice. In Britain, political parties and the public are not actually that divided over how to respond to Gaza; a strong majority a ceasefire back. Instead, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has also become a club for opponents to swing against each other.

The ruling Conservative Party seized on the anti-Israel comments of a Labor Party parliamentary candidate to accuse Labor of failing to eradicate a legacy of anti-Semitism in its ranks. Labor pointed to disparaging comments by a Tory MP about London’s Muslim mayor as evidence of simmering Islamophobia among Conservatives.

Both parties maneuvered furiously in Parliament over the ceasefire resolution, not because they differed much on the substance, but because the Conservatives saw an opportunity to stoke divisions within Labor over Britain’s initial support for Israel to bring to light.

“It’s an example of how a really serious issue has been distorted through the prism of party politics in Britain,” said Steven Fielding, emeritus professor of political history at the University of Nottingham.

In the United States, anger among some Democrats over President Biden’s robust support for Israel has been fueled a protest voice during Michigan’s primaries this week, raising questions about whether the war could change the outcome of a closely fought presidential election.

In France, President Emmanuel Macron was forced to do this throw away of his pro-Israel stance under pressure from France’s large Muslim population. In Germany, with its responsibility for the Holocaust, support for Israel has remained a fundamental principle, although Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has recently begun to emphasize the importance of the ‘survival of the Palestinians’.

The conflict has also awakened ghosts in British politics: when Lee Anderson, the blunt Conservative lawmaker, said that “Islamists” were “in control” of Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, he was trading in the kind of anti-Muslim sentiment that twenty flared up years ago after London was hit by terrorist attacks by Islamic militants.

When Labor candidate Azhar Ali claimed that Israel had ‘allowed’ Hamas’ surprise attack, he evoked the anti-Semitism that infected the Labor Party under its previous leader, Jeremy Corbyn. The current leader, Keir Starmer, has purged Corbyn as part of a campaign to root out anti-Jewish prejudice. He also withdrew the party’s support for Mr Ali’s candidacy.

“Because of the Corbyn era, Israel has become part of a culture war in this country in a way that didn’t happen 20 years ago,” said Daniel Levy, head of the US/Middle East Project, a research group based in London. and New York.

Mr. Levy acknowledged that many lawmakers acted out of conviction on Gaza. But the anger of the past two weeks, he argued, was not so much about the rising death toll or how best to deal with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but about the complicated history and politics surrounding Jewish and Muslim issues in Britain envelop.

For the Labor Party, the next tricky moment in this drama could come on Thursday, when voters in Rochdale, north of Manchester, will elect a new MP to replace a Labor MP who died in January. Although the party has disowned Mr Ali, he remains on the ballot paper and could still win the seat.

But Mr Ali’s messy late suspension has opened the door for a rebel candidate, George Galloway, a former Labor lawmaker who is now running as leader of Britain’s left-wing fringe Labor Party. He appeals to Rochdale’s sizeable Muslim population with a militantly pro-Palestinian message, arguing that many Britons are “revolting” against Labour’s support for Israel.

“If George Galloway does well enough,” Mr Levy said, “it will encourage a whole range of Labor leaders to take up this issue.”

That could cause further headaches for Mr Starmer as he prepares for the general election against the Conservatives later this year. But with Labor leading the Tories by 20 percentage points or more in the polls, analysts said the conflict in Gaza was unlikely to tip the election outcome.

In recent weeks, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s government has also changed its position on the conflict enough to blur differences with the opposition. During a trip to the Falkland Islands last week, his foreign secretary, David Cameron, called for a ceasefire, saying the fighting must stop “right now.”

“David Cameron and Keir Starmer have the same position on Israel-Gaza, and both have the same position as two-thirds of the public,” said Sunder Katwala, director of British Future, a research institute focused on immigration, race and racism. and identity.

But if Mr Starmer were to win the general election, Israel could pose a lingering problem for him in government. In 2006, Britain’s last Labor Prime Minister, Tony Blair, strongly supported Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s invasion of Lebanon. The war was going badly and Mr Blair was affected by the collateral damage at home.

“Undoubtedly that was even a bigger political problem for Tony than the war in Iraq,” said Jonathan Powell, Blair’s chief of staff.

For the Tories, the conflict in Gaza presents a different set of challenges. Like the Republican Party in the United States, it has taken a strong position in favor of Israel, a position that has provoked little internal disagreement. But the Tories are now dealing with the fallout from anti-Muslim statements from right-wing figures such as Anderson and Suella Braverman, a former home secretary.

After the debate in Parliament on a ceasefire, which turned ugly amid a fight over the speaker’s handling of it, Lindsay Hoyle, Ms Braverman wrote in the Daily Telegraph that “the Islamists, the extremists and the anti-Semites is now in charge.” The police, she said, gave the protesters free rein. In such a feverish atmosphere, there are growing concerns about the threat of violence against MPs.

Mr Anderson has refused to apologize, saying Mr Khan had “given away our capital to his friends”. Islamists, he told the right-wing GB News channel, “are in control of Khan and they are in control of London.”

Mr. Khan the comments mentioned ‘racist, Islamophobic and anti-Muslim’, and Mr Sunak, under pressure from prominent Muslim conservatives, suspended Mr Anderson from the party. But now Sunak is facing criticism from the party’s right wing for punishing a figure popular with some voters in England’s ‘red wall’, which was crucial to the party’s victory in the 2019 general election.

Given the Tories’ dire position in the polls, some analysts said there was considerable posturing in the fury over Gaza, part of a wider battle for party leadership or visibility after an expected election defeat.

“There are a lot of Tory MPs who are going to lose their seats, so they are looking for media opportunities,” said Ben Ansell, professor of comparative democratic institutions at the University of Oxford.

But the appeal to anti-Muslim sentiment also reflects something else: a last-ditch attempt by the Conservatives to derail Labour’s momentum.

“If you look at what the Conservatives are using against Labor it is that you cannot trust them because they will be controlled by others,” Mr Katwala said. “Right now they’re switching from ‘woke leftists’ to ‘the Islamists.’”

In a forest on the outskirts of Atlanta, hundreds of demonstrators gathered again last March to try to stop the construction of a new police and fire training center.

For Timothy Bilodeau, a 26-year-old who flew in from Boston, the fight that began in 2021 had taken on new urgency after state troopers killed a protester weeks earlier in a shootout in the woods that also wounded an officer.

The day Mr. Bilodeau entered, there was another fiery confrontation. A crowd marched to the development site, where some protesters threw fireworks and Molotov cocktails and set fire to equipment. Police arrested nearly two dozen protesters, including Mr. Bilodeau.

As Mr. Bilodeau saw it, he was taking a principled stand against the destruction of the forest. But prosecutors took a darker view: They charged Mr. Bilodeau and 22 others with domestic terrorism.

A total of 42 people involved in the demonstrations against the training center have been charged under Georgia’s domestic terrorism law. This is one of the largest cases of its kind in the country, on a charge that is rarely prosecuted.

As several states have added or expanded terrorism laws or are considering doing so, Georgia’s case is at the center of the debate over the need for these measures, the dangers they pose and, more fundamentally, what constitutes terrorism. (One proposal in New York has suggested that blocking traffic, a tactic occasionally used at demonstrations, could be considered domestic terrorism.)

Georgia expanded its definition in 2017 to include attempts to seriously harm or kill people, or to disable or destroy “critical infrastructure,” with the aim of forcing a policy change. This charge carries a maximum prison sentence of 35 years.

Officials in Georgia have argued that the defendants were involved in sowing disorder and destruction — actions that required a quick and strong response.

“We will not waver when it comes to protecting people, enforcing the rule of law and ensuring that those who engage in criminal activity are vigorously prosecuted and aggressively prosecuted,” said Christopher M. Carr, the attorney general of Georgia, in a statement.

Critics say the charges in Georgia vindicate their worst fears about domestic terrorism laws: that they could label activism as terrorism and allow prosecutors to impose even harsher penalties for “property crimes that were already illegal simply because of the associated political speech.” who are critical of the government. policy,” as the American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia said in a recent statement.

The result, critics argue, is that freedom of speech is suppressed.

“It’s chilling,” said Mr. Bilodeau, an engineering consultant. “It is a devastating threat to all people who are advocates or activists for the well-being of our planet, climate or communities.”

Legal experts have also expressed concern that many people are being prosecuted for serious crimes because of the actions of a few.

Mr. Bilodeau’s attorney, Amanda Clark Palmer, argued in a motion for bail that his arrest warrant “did not contain any specific allegation that Mr. Bilodeau himself possessed or threw a rock, fireworks or Molotov cocktail.”

“The only specific allegation,” she added, “is this: the suspect was observed wearing muddy clothing as he crossed the embankment. The suspect was also in possession of a shield.”

Officials in Georgia have insisted the charges were justified, with Atlanta police calling the suspects “violent agitators,” mostly from out of state, who committed violence “under the cover of a peaceful protest.”

The charges have not yet resulted in charges, in part because the local district attorney withdrew from the case, citing a “fundamental difference in prosecutorial philosophy” with Mr. Carr, the Republican attorney general.

But the allegations also formed the basis for a broader case that Mr. Carr’s office is pursuing under the state’s racketeering law — a powerful tool that prosecutors have used to target street gangs, officials accused of corruption and even former President Donald J. Trump. who is accused of conspiring to overturn his 2020 election loss.

Mr. Bilodeau and 60 others now face racketeering charges, with prosecutors describing them as part of “an anarchist, anti-police, anti-business extremist organization” that conspired to block the training center. The first trial in the racketeering case could begin in the coming weeks.

The Atlanta City Council voted to authorize in 2021 the training facility, officially called the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center and derided by protesters as “Cop City.”

The project mobilized a diverse coalition of opponents: environmentalists who objected to the development of a rare expanse of forest in a rapidly developing metropolitan area; social justice activists who believed the facility would train officers to become community police officers with militarized tactics; and local residents opposed a potentially disruptive new neighbor.

Opposition increased in 2022 when officers began sweeping the site. Protesters had set up camp in trees and set up barricades to block officers and construction crews. Some protesters threw Molotov cocktails and set off fireworks, police said. Officers responded with tear gas and rubber bullets, and in January 2023, a 26-year-old activist, Manuel Esteban Paez Terán, known as Tortuguita, was fatally shot by state forces.

Officials have said the activist fired first, wounding a soldier, but protesters remained skeptical, in part because the soldiers were not wearing body cameras.

Since then, more construction and police vehicles have been torched at the site. including recently as at the end of January. Construction companies in Georgia and beyond — including at least one falsely linked to the training center — have had equipment destroyed or burned, authorities said.

Last month, city officials said the destruction had increased the cost of the facility, estimated at $90 million, by nearly $20 million.

“These individuals are operating in fear,” says Georgia’s John F. King insurance and safety fire commissionersaid at a recent news conference announcing rewards of up to $200,000 for help finding and convicting arson suspects.

When Georgia lawmakers tightened the state’s domestic terrorism laws, it was partly in response to the 2015 racist massacre at a black church in Charleston, SC. domestic terrorists. Georgia lawmakers are currently considering a new measure to further strengthen the law.

Like Georgia, other states have taken steps to expand terrorism-related laws, reflecting an increasingly fractured political climate and fears of rising extremism. A bill in West Virginia would clarify the definitions of terrorism and create mandatory sentencing rules.

Last year, Oregon — where authorities have clashed with armed militias on public property, and where far-right protesters breached the state Capitol in 2021 — became the latest state to enact a domestic terrorism law.

Officials in Georgia have used the sweeping law to crack down on left-wing activism that, they allege, took a violent turn in Atlanta around the time of the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests.

One of the demands in the nationwide protests that followed the killing of George Floyd was to defund police departments and repurpose those resources. Cop City protesters see Atlanta doing the opposite with the training center, which officials are hailing as an investment in a police force struggling with depleted ranks and morale.

“We don’t need more police and a surveillance state,” said Ayla King, 19, a recent high school graduate from Worcester, Massachusetts, who traveled to Atlanta last March after following developments on social media. MX. King, who uses the pronoun they, faces both domestic terrorism and racketeering charges.

Mr. Bilodeau, who spent 17 days in jail after the confrontation last March, declined to talk about what he did in the woods in March, citing his upcoming trial. In charging documents, prosecutors accused him of criminal trespass and joining “an organized gang designed to overwhelm police,” occupy the forest and cause property damage.

He returned to a life in Boston turned upside down. His bank closed his accounts, he said. The youth arts and music program where he was a regular volunteer told him he was no longer welcome. His concerns about police seeped into his dreams, and he is wary of participating in any more protests.

“This has been a crushing emotional and legal process, and we are not really through it yet,” Mr. Bilodeau said.

MX. King had to put plans for the university aside.

“This is terrifying,” says Mx. King said this in an interview in December, before a gag order was issued in their case. “But it’s very important to stay strong and know that the fact that the state says I’m a domestic terrorist doesn’t really mean anything. It’s such a bloated load.’

Yet Mx. King has no illusions about the seriousness of the situation. In fact, they recently received a stark reminder of the stakes: They turned down a plea bargain offer of a 10-year sentence, including three years in prison.

Australian boxing star Harry Garside has opened up about the toll the domestic violence allegations against him took on him in 2023, revealing he came close to suicide.

Garside, 26, was arrested by NSW Police in dramatic scenes at Sydney Airport as he returned home with his father after filming reality TV show I'm A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! in South Africa earlier last year.

Police have dropped charges against the boxer in a Sydney court after his legal team produced video evidence showing his ex-girlfriend was the alleged aggressor during a March 1 incident.

Garside had steadfastly maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings brought against him.

Garside's ex-girlfriend was later arrested at her Bellevue Hill home in July and charged with assaulting and intimidating her former partner.

Garside has now spoken about the terrible toll the allegations have taken on him, revealing that his mother was the reason he didn't kill himself.

'I feel like I became a man last year. It was a real coming-of-age moment for me,” he told the newspaper Neil Mitchell asks why podcast.

'I never thought about suicide so often during that period.

“Being in the public eye… not wanting to leave the house, it was so, so hard. And the extra element that I try to show to the people around me: 'I'm doing well, I'm doing well, I'm going to get through this.'

'[But] they were all just thoughts of not wanting to be here. The only reason I didn't was my mother. The one day where it wasn't just thoughts but action, it turned out to be Mother's Day… I remember thinking how selfish I would be if I did it that day.

'I was really thinking about it, I wanted to crash my car… I'm sorry.

“I hate rewatching things like this. I wanted to do something stupid and I kept reminding myself that it's Mother's Day.

“And Mom would have to be reminded of that for the rest of her life.

'That her son is not there and that he did it on this day.

“So I didn't do it.

“And I'm so grateful that I didn't do it… But absolutely, I was in the depths of hell for that period.”

After winning bronze at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, Mr Garside has made no secret of his desire to chase Australia's first Olympic gold medal in boxing at the Paris Olympics later this year.

A make-up store in Kazakhstan has made a video on what cosmetics to use 'if your husband beats you', in an attempt to highlight the country's domestic violence problem.

The video, which has since been removed by the original poster – Moodmart.kzbased in the city of Almaty – features a mock influencer-style video showing how to deal with and cover up signs of abuse.

The clip was reposted by news media Village Kazakhstan on Instagram, showing the store's founder, Zhuldyz Akim, appearing to have applied makeup to look bruised and bloodied.

“First of all, don't use acids,” she said jovially to the camera. “I'm sure you understand that when you have trauma, the skin becomes very sensitive and, to be honest, we have enough toxicity in our lives.”

Her next hacks involved 'repairing and moisturizing our skin with creams like Manyo, Abib'. But she warned not to mix this with Bepanthen, an ointment often used for skin lesions.

“Next, if you've gotten a bruise like me, let's just get a good eye cream, base, and high coverage foundation,” Zhuldyz continued. “I mean, it's not his fault, it's mine.

“And if you have any bleeding on your lips, you can cover it all up with Kiko Milano, shade number 16, and you'll be on trend with plump, kissed lips.”

She signed off the video as a “happy wife and loving mother.” MailOnline has contacted Moodmart.kz for comment.

According to Village Kazakhstanthe original clip was viewed 1.6 million times after being shared with Moodmart.kz's 64,800 followers and was intended to draw attention to the scale of the problem in the Central Asian country.

According to a UN women In a 2018 survey, 17 percent of the country's “ever partnered women ages 18 to 75” said they had experienced physical or sexual intimate partner violence, while 21 percent had experienced psychological abuse.

And legislation on this in Kazakhstan continues to infuriate activists and human rights groups.

In October, Amantai Zharkynbek, a deputy of the ruling Amanat political party, even claimed that if a man is sentenced to 15 days of administrative arrest for domestic violence, his wife should suffer the same for “provoking” the incident.

Last year, Human Rights Watch (HRW) called on the nation in an article to tighten laws when it comes to domestic violence.

The clip was reposted on Instagram by news channel Village Kazakhstan and shows the store's founder, Zhuldyz Akim, who appears to have applied makeup to look bruised and bloodied.

Mihra Rittmann, senior researcher in Central Asia, said: 'Kazakhstan's existing laws effectively leave survivors of domestic violence behind, and women have paid a high price for delays in law reform.

“Lawmakers must urgently seize this opportunity to ensure new laws fully protect women from domestic violence.”

The rights group also stressed that the country's current laws mean that domestic violence is 'not a standalone criminal offence'. Support and resources for survivors are also typically difficult to obtain, especially for residents of rural areas.

Bills and bills appear to have been introduced repeatedly to strengthen protections for survivors and encourage prevention, but it is not clear whether any changes have been formally implemented.

The country's president, Kassym Jomart Tokayev, has repeatedly called for more attention to be paid to the issue.

HRW also said that police in the country receive more than 100,000 domestic violence complaints every year, according to the Ministry of Interior.

The report added: 'In the first ten months of 2022, 93 women in Kazakhstan were killed in domestic violence-related murders and 794 criminal cases were opened for moderate and serious charges of bodily harm.'

This is getting awkward.

Alexander Zverev, the German tennis star who is due to appear in court in May on domestic violence charges, is pushing ahead with elimination from the Australian Open, which would save the sport from being a topic no one wants to talk about.

Then the world number 6 avoids defeat and escapes tight tiebreaks and five-set battles every day. Zverev, 26, raises his arms. He answers friendly questions from a tennis personality – questions that never refer to the charges and the upcoming trial in Berlin.

That's what happened today (Monday) when Zverev won a fifth-set tiebreak for the second time in a week, beating British No. 1 Cameron Norrie 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (3). It was an exciting, nerve-wracking match in which Zverev's big serve, as fierce as ever in the closing stages, earned him the victory.

Zverev, who this month joined the ATP Players' Council, which serves as the voice of players on the men's tour, will meet world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals on Wednesday. Minutes after his win against Norrie, Zverev and interviewer Nicholas Monroe, a retired doubles player, led the Margaret Court Arena in singing Happy Birthday to Zverev's father.

The charges are also rarely discussed during his televised matches, even though this is the second time an ex-girlfriend has accused Zverev of physical abuse. The first led to a 15-month investigation, which concluded early last year and found “insufficient evidence to substantiate published allegations of abuse.” On both occasions, Zverev has denied any wrongdoing.

GO DEEPER

Why Alexander Zverev is allowed to play despite domestic violence allegations

The latest accusations come from Brenda Patea, the mother of Zverev's daughter Mayla. In media interviews and claims filed with German legal authorities, she has alleged that Zverev pushed her against a wall and strangled her during an argument in 2020. Patea said she told friends about the incident at the time, but did not find out until October had reported it to the police. 2021 due to a mixture of shame and concern for their daughter, who was born in March 2021.

In October, a criminal court in Berlin issued an injunction, fining Zverev almost $500,000 (£393,000) in connection with Patea's charges. In Germany, a prosecutor can request a criminal warrant for cases he considers simple, because there is convincing evidence that does not require a trial. The defendant has the right to challenge the order, which Zverev does.

Speaking at the Paris Masters in November, Zverev described the punishment order as “complete bull***”, adding: “Anyone with a semi-standard IQ level knows what this is all about.” The player did not elaborate on the reasons for his objection. “I'm honestly not going to comment on that, because there is still a procedure for that come,” he said.

A trial is planned for the end of May, at the same time as the French Open. ZVerev is not required to attend the trial and said last week he does not know whether he will. His lawyers call the legal proceedings “outrageous” and say Zverev will take action “by any means necessary.” The player is considered innocent until a final verdict is reached.

That said another ex-girlfriend, the Russian former tennis player Olya Sharypova Zverev repeatedly abused her in New York in 2019, Shanghai, Monaco and Geneva. Unlike Patea, Sharypova has never involved the criminal justice system and made her accusations in a lengthy article in the online magazine Slate and on social media.

The ATP decided to take no further action in January 2023 after a 15-month independent investigation extensive interviews with Zverev, Sharypova and 24 others, including family, friends and other players, as well as analysis of text messages, audio files and photos. The investigation, conducted by third party The Lake Forest Group, concluded that there was not enough evidence to substantiate Sharypova's claims.

Zverev has always denied any wrongdoing and said the only people suggesting there is anything inappropriate about his participation in this tournament, on the tour and on the Players' Council are members of the press.

“Journalists say that – some are actually more interested in this story to write about and more about the clicks than the actual truth,” Zverev said last week.

Days after making that statement, Sloane Stephens, the former US Open champion who recently resigned from the WTA Player Council, said someone on trial on domestic violence charges would likely not represent players in the WTA.

“The ATP is kind of beating their own drum,” Stephens said. “They do what they do on that side.”

“It's a difficult situation,” Stephens added. “Someone who is very prominent in our sport… I think he will now appear in court and face whatever he faces (the issue can be resolved).”

Zverev has continued to play throughout the investigations and legal wrangles because the ATP has no policy prohibiting this. The other major tennis bodies that could be involved – the four Grand Slams and the International Tennis Federation – have followed the tour's lead and decided to run the legal process through the courts before reaching a decision.

When asked on Monday why he wanted to join the Players' Council and what issues he wanted to focus on, Zverev ticked off several items related to the structure of the tour and the playing demands athletes face.

“Playing eleven months a year is too much,” he said. Adding events to the tour “might get a little out of hand and a little too much. There's just all these discussions. But they are very nice discussions. No one's fighting in there, no one's yelling or screaming. We are all there to achieve the same thing and have a better tour”.

He made no mention of the protection, nor of the accusations made against him over the past three years.

No one wants to talk about it at this Australian Open.
