A photo of the late Queen Elizabeth II with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was also manipulated, a picture agency has revealed.

The portrait taken at Balmoral in August 2022 shows the late monarch posing with eight of her 12 grandchildren and was taken just weeks before her death by Kate Middleton.

It was released by Buckingham Palace on April 21 last year to mark what would have been her 97th birthday.

Global picture agency Getty Images now says the heartwarming image was ‘digitally enhanced at source’ having undertaken a review following the recent fallout from the Princess of Wales editing a Mother’s Day photo of herself with her three children.

Several discrepancies, which include the line of the late Queen’s tartan skirt not matching, have been picked up by eagle-eyed members of the public.

The green Chesterfield sofa appears to have been spliced together, while there are black patches visible behind Princes George and Louis, suggesting the area has been edited, reported The Telegraph.

In the snap the late monarch appeared in her element with Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor, James, Earl of Wessex, Lena Tindall, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Isla Phillips, Prince Louis, Mia Tindall, Lucas Tindall and Savannah Phillips.

All the children are smiling sweetly as they surround the Queen, who was sitting between them on a sofa and wearing tartan at her beloved Aberdeenshire home.

A spokesman for Getty Images said: ‘Getty Images has reviewed the image in question and placed an editor’s note on it, stating that the image has been digitally enhanced at source.’

Suspicions were first raised about the portrait last year by tech CEO Christopher Bouzy who said he believed it had been photoshopped.

It will be further embarrassment for Kate, who was said to be ‘very distressed by the fallout’ of her Mother’s Day photo, according to the Mail’s royal editor Rebecca English.

Earlier this month the picture was released by Kensington Palace in what was seen as a bid to quash vicious conspiracy theories that had been swirling on social media about the Princess’ health after not being publicly seen since before her planned abdominal surgery in January.

Several of the world’s top news agencies took the extraordinary step to issue a ‘kill’ notice of the keen amateur photographer’s photo over claims it had been ‘manipulated’.

It prompted Kate to issue a statement on X hours later in which she said: ‘Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing.

‘I wanted to  express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused.

‘I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother’s Day. C.’

It comes after an ‘incredibly happy’ Kate was pictured by a member of the public on Saturday visiting the Windsor Farm Shop with her husband William, 41, a short drive from their Berkshire home.

Looking healthy, happy and relaxed, the princess carries her own shopping bag and laughingly chats with her husband as the pair exit the shop and return to their car, according to the image published by The Sun.

Kate and William were not accompanied by their three children, Prince George, ten, Princess Charlotte, eight, and five-year-old Prince Louis.

The couple have, in recent weeks, been left deeply distressed by wild social media speculation and gossip about Kate’s health and whereabouts.

However body language expert Judi James said tonight that Kate’s behaviour was a masterclass in ‘quashing all the toxic rumours’.

She told MailOnline: ‘It is completely stunning to see the most sought-after woman in the world and the subject of speculation and rumours on social media suddenly appearing like this looking not just healthy, full of energy and incredibly happy but also making no apparent attempt to hide while out in public.

‘Kate walks ahead of William here, taking large enough strides to suggest no hint of any ongoing frailty. While William keeps his face partially hidden under his cap and his head lowered, Kate’s body language here suggests a desire to be seen.

‘Her head is up and her long hair is billowing while she wears a cheek-rounded smile that seems to signal she is completely upbeat and cheerful.

‘This is quite extraordinary body language behaviour for a leading royal out “incognito” in public and it suggests a point is, quite naturally, being made in terms of reassuring fans and quashing all the toxic rumours.’

Sources close to the Wales’ have told the Mail they have found the speculation hugely hurtful and hard to deal with, but were determined to focus on what was important to them – their family and the princess’ recovery.

It is anticipated that the new image, showing the couple going about their normal lives, will go some way to calming many of the wilder rumours that have gripped people across the globe.

The snap was taken at 12.43pm on Saturday by a member of the public who was also at the farm shop, just a mile’s drive from the Wales’ Adelaide Cottage home, on their Apple iPhone 12 Pro phone.

The person concerned said they were visiting the shop to ‘kill time’ while on the way to meet someone to buy an item from Facebook when they recognised William and Kate and were struck by how ‘happy’ they looked.

Last April Mr Bouzy described the photograph of the late Queen as ‘beautiful’ on X.

Calling on people to ‘stop criticising’ snap, he added: ‘Yes, they Photoshopped it, and so what? It isn’t easy to get the perfect photo with 10 children. It appears they took multiple shots and then edited the photo to make it perfect. I would’ve done the same.’

In a later tweet about the snap, which was shared on the official social media accounts of The Prince and Princess of Wales, he wrote: ‘You can literally see where two sides of the sofa were spliced together, and there are pixels on the face that were not properly edited.

‘As I stated in my original tweet, I don’t see anything wrong with it. But to claim it’s not Photoshopped is false. It’s been edited.’

Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead have revealed that their son Laurie ‘freaked out’ when he met Grogu, aka Baby Yoda.

The Star Wars couple’s youngest child, whom they welcomed in 2021, grew up surrounded by science fiction.

And he recently got the chance to meet the real Grogu, but it didn’t go quite as planned.

Din Grogu, commonly known as Baby Yoda, is a character from the Star Wars Disney+ original television series The Mandalorian, starring Ewan and Mary.

Ewan explained SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show: ‘He’s had a toy Grogu since he was born, the stuffed animal, you know, and then I was visiting Mary on set when she was doing ‘Ahsoka’ and I brought Laurie along and the puppeteers had the real Grogu there.

“They brought him out and we took him in, Laurie into a room to meet Grogu and Grogu was sitting on a little pedestal, and all the guys were kind of standing off to the side but letting him work with their remotes and Grogu was communicating with Laurie and he panicked, like he was completely lost.”

Host Jess asked: Wait, in a good way, or was he-

The father of five replied: No, in a bad way. In a bad way. He was terrified.

Mary added: “He was terrified. He didn’t want to go near it because he was really little at the time, so he was about one and a half, so we held him up and, you know, we brought him over to Grogu and it looked like he was climbing away.

“His whole body was crawling to get away. We’re saying, ‘Oh my God. This wasn’t the reaction we were hoping for.'”

Mary, who tied the knot with Ewan in a small ceremony in April 2022, previously told EW that Laurie was “obsessed” with Grogu, and certainly no stranger to Star Wars paraphernalia.

“As for our son’s favorite toy, he has his Grogu,” she said.

“He has Lola from the Obi-Wan series. There are many Dadas from different eras of Obi-Wan. When he sees an Obi-Wan figure, it’s Dada. That’s how he knows it now.’

The Trainspotting star shares four daughters with ex-wife Eve Mavrakis, they split in 2017 after 22 years of marriage and their divorce was finalized in August 2020.

The couple, who met on the set of TV crime drama Kavanagh QC, first confirmed their split in 2017, amid claims Ewan saw Mary kissing in a London restaurant.

Around the same time, Eve was depicted without her wedding ring.

Ewan – who blamed ‘irreconcilable differences’ for the split – then started dating Mary. The couple welcomed Laurie into the world in June.

The actor can soon be seen in Disney+ series OBO Wan Kenobi in the title role and in Guillermo Del Toro’s stop-motion musical film Pinocchio as the voice of Jiminy Cricket.

Prince Harry is said to have joked about a mural he saw while visiting a barbecue restaurant in Texas.

The Duke, 39, and Duchess, 42, of Sussex were nearby when Meghan was part of a panel at the SXSW arts festival panel this weekend.

The visit to Austin’s La Barbecue restaurant on Friday took place ahead of Meghan’s appearance, where she spoke about her cyberbullying ordeal while pregnant with her children Archie and Lilibet.

Harry and Meghan both embraced co-owner Alison Clem in a warm hug before being escorted inside where they greeted other employees.

According to the Express, Prince Harry spotted a mural of rock star Freddie Mercury dressed as the late Queen Elizabeth, placed next to a gender-neutral toilet, and joked: ‘We have to take a picture of this.’

During their visit to the cafe, the couple was dressed casually, Meghan wore a denim jumpsuit and white linen blazer and Prince Harry opted for a relaxed Henley-style shirt.

Meghan complemented her relaxed look with a pair of black and brown Chanel ballet pumps, dark sunglasses and a cream handbag.

Staff reportedly described the former senior royals – who ordered sausages and brisket – as ‘delicious’ during their visit to the restaurant.

After the couple’s meal at the restaurant, Meghan appeared on the panel, which also included Brooke Shields and Katie Couric.

The Duchess discussed ‘breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes’ at the event.

Meghan, 42, spoke out about her use of social media and claimed that most of the online hate she experienced happened while she was pregnant with her two young children.

‘I’m currently distancing myself from it for my well-being, but most of the bullying and abuse I experienced on social media and online took place when I was pregnant with Archie and with Lili, and with a newborn baby, with each of them ‘ she said.

“Think about that and ask yourself why people would be so hateful. It’s not catty, it’s cruel. Why you would do that when you’re pregnant or as a mother, it’s such a tender and sacred time.”

Prince Harry was seen clapping in the front row in support of his wife, along with her longtime friend and confidante Markus Anderson.

Called ‘Mr. Soho House’, Markus is often referred to as the ‘second most important man’ in Meghan’s life – and he was instrumental in bringing Harry and Meghan together.

Just a day earlier, the couple was spotted by onlookers at Soho House Austin, an exclusive members-only club.

‘Harry was very animated during dinner. They were super calm and seemed happy with the cheerful atmosphere in the lively venue,” said a fellow diner.

In July 2016, the couple had their very first date at London’s Soho House and even went back to the club for a second time the next day, as seen in a black and white photo of Meghan snuggling into Harry’s shoulder – the couple laughs.

It may not be the most flattering royal portrait.

According to the editor of the British Art Journal, it made the late queen look “like one of the royal corgis that has had a stroke.”

Yet Her Majesty seemed unconcerned by the brutal depiction in a now infamous painting by Lucian Freud from 2021.

According to author Tina Brown, the commission was seen as a risk for Freud given his reputation for painting ‘fleshy, hanging nudes’.

In her best-selling book The Palace Papers, she explains: ‘Freud broke a lifelong rule of having his subjects come to his studio and traveled to the Picture Conservation Studio in Friary Court at St James’s Palace from May 2000 to December 2001, where he May 2000 to December 2001, the Queen held 15 sessions.

‘They reportedly had ‘a great time’ and talked non-stop about horses and racing.

‘The resulting portrait was as brutal as you would expect from Freud: stark, coarse-featured and imposing.

“There is a fixed resolution for the sovereign jaw and a heavy crown on her head.”

One critic suggested that the monarch should jail Freud for lèse-majesté.

But as Brown explains, the Queen herself showed her usual lack of personal vanity when the portrait was displayed.

“Very interesting,” she remarked gnomically. Maybe it helped that it was small (five by nine centimeters).”

This was in stark contrast to the way Winston Churchill had responded to the portrait made of him by Graham Sutherland for his 80th birthday in 1954 and presented to him that same year. It was paid for through contributions from MPs and members of the House of Lords.

Churchill, who considered the painting unflattering, fell into a “thunderous mood,” Brown writes. And after the presentation, the artwork was never seen again.

In 1978, his wife Clementine admitted to burning it.

The queen responded more graciously to her own portrait, Brown writes:

‘In 2017, she recognized its significance in the artist’s oeuvre and approved the portrait’s hanging in the Queen’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace.’

Elizabeth Day says she’s come to terms with the fact that at 45, she’ll never be a mother, but she still thinks about having a child “every day.”

The How To Fail presenter and Magpie author, 45, lives in Vauxhall, south London, with her husband, financial technology CEO Justin Basini, told The times that she tried for twelve years to have a child, but last year was forced to accept that her dream would never come true.

She underwent two rounds of IVF, miscarriages, egg freezing and surgery on her uterus, but eventually the “stress” of the process became too overwhelming.

She told the newspaper: ‘My desire to have a child has not only shaped me as a woman: it has shaped me as a woman. There isn’t a day I don’t think about it.’

Elizabeth Day says she’s made peace with the fact that she’ll never be a mother at 45 — but she still thinks about having a child ‘every day’

Last year, at the age of 44, Elizabeth decided to stop trying after failing to become pregnant in America with the help of an egg donor.

She and her husband searched for a year for a donor, who underwent the process of extraction and IVF, and the embryo was implanted in Elizabeth’s uterus.

She said it was “crushing” to receive an email from the clinic 10 days later saying: “You are not pregnant.”

During her fertility struggles, Day felt like her “purpose” in life was to become a mother, but her perspective has changed.

“I realize that the greater purpose is to speak for those who are not mothers or fathers, often not by choice. That gives my life meaning, and I was afraid I wouldn’t get that,” she said.

She also believes that adoption is not an easy process and is not necessarily the right option for her.

The novelist has previously spoken openly about her struggle to have a child, both during her first marriage to former BBC editor-in-chief Kamal Ahmed, whom she divorced at the age of 36, and to her current husband Justin Basini.

Her first miscarriage was with Ahmed when she was 12 weeks pregnant, which she says was the catalyst for their eventual split when she left him in February 2015.

Day also dated Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s brother Jasper, who was nine years her junior. She said their breakup was partly the inspiration for How To Fail.

She has been married to Justin since 2021 after meeting on dating app Hinge.

How To Fail now has 20 series and has been downloaded more than 45 million times, featuring interviews such as Rory Stewart and Margaret Atwood.

She released a memoir of the same name, while her thriller Magpie explores the theme of infertility.

Day previously spoke on the podcast Changes about her struggle to conceive, in a conversation with former Radio 1 DJ Annie Macmanus.

She told the podcast that women undergoing fertility treatment can often feel “gaslit” by the doctors treating them, saying she has experienced it firsthand.

Day told the broadcaster that she often felt like, “I’m failing, but there’s an extra level of moral judgment coming at me from people I’ve learned to respect and who have an enormous amount of power in a medical situation.”

She told Macmanus that after she relayed her experiences to a friend, they suggested, “Maybe you’re not reacting badly to the meds, maybe the meds are failing you.”

Says Day: “It was a truth bomb moment. I actually am under attack by a male-dominated establishment – none of them will have any idea what it’s like to have a miscarriage, let alone menstruate.’

Day added that she thought there are “some wonderful, compassionate medical professionals out there and I’ve met so many of them,” and said the profession was “changing for the better.”

Referring to the fertility problems of one of the characters in Day’s hit book Magpie, Macmanus asked the author how much of it was based on her own experiences.

The author said she wanted to write about her own experiences in a novel, saying: ‘I’ve had IVF, I’ve had miscarriages, I’ve had my eggs frozen, I’ve had operations on my uterus – and I really wanted to put that somewhere to put down’.

She also told the broadcaster that walking out of the marital home in February 2015, after her first marriage to Kamal Ahmed ended, was “the hardest thing I’ve ever done.”

‘When I realized I was truly unhappy, it was after a horrific year in which I had two failed rounds of IVF, then fell pregnant naturally and had a miscarriage after three months. I was a hormonal wreck and numb with grief.”

She said that after a “grim Christmas” she knew that “the level of unhappiness was intolerable” and she went to therapy.

Knowing the marriage would not survive, she told Macmanus she felt “terrible shame” at the idea that it had failed, but that she knew “I was hitting a wall and had to make a change.”

Day’s ninth book, Friendaholic, is out now.

With Queen Elizabeth in attendance, a rare public appearance from Prince Philip, and Prince Harry taking time away from his newborn son Archie, the guest list at Gabriella Windsor’s wedding proved the esteem in which she’s held by the royal family.

Prince and Princess Michael of Kent’s daughter married financier Thomas Kingston at St George’s Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle, surrounded by family and friends, on May 18, 2019.

Sadly the couple were to enjoy less than five full years of marriage before Mr Kingston’s untimely death aged 45, which was announced by Buckingham Palace on Tuesday evening.

Other royals in attendance on the couple’s big day included Sarah, Duchess of York with her ex-husband Prince Andrew, their daughter Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Marpelli Mozzi and Princess Anne.

The Middleton family were also out in force with Kate’s parents Carole and Michael and sister Pippa in attendance – thanks to her longstanding friendship with the groom.

Dubbed the ‘biggest society wedding of the year’ at the time, guests also included Julian Fellowes, who is well known as creator of TV period drama Downton Abbey.

Prince Philip, who retired from royal duties in May 2017, made a rare public appearance at the wedding in 2019, arriving alongside Queen Elizabeth at St George’s Chapel.

The Duke of Sussex was also at the wedding, attending just 12 days after the birth of Archie, his first son with wife Meghan Markle – and on the eve of their first wedding anniversary.

The beaming bride arrived at St George’s chapel in a claret-coloured vintage car, accompanied by her father Prince Michael of Kent.

She stunned in an ivory lace gown by Italian designer Luisa Beccaria, featuring a bateau neckline, sheer embroidered sleeves and an A-line skirt.

Gabriella, known as Ella to her friends, wore a breathtaking six-metre long veil, which was arranged by the designer on the steps of the chapel.

She selected the Russian Fringe-style tiara, also worn by her grandmother, Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent, and mother, Princess Michael of Kent, on their wedding days.

The dazzling diamonds of the headpiece glittered beneath Lady Gabriella’s long white veil as she made her entrance at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.

Meanwhile, Thomas, who was a director of Devonport Capital, specialising in providing finance for companies in ‘frontier economies’, chose a classic morning suit for the big day.

The Bristol University graduate previously worked in Baghdad, Iraq, according to the Telegraph, working to procure the release of hostages after joining the Diplomatic Missions Unit of the Foreign Office.

His financial career credentials included roles at Voltan Capital Management and IDC Securities.

Thomas was a close friend of Pippa Middleton and the pair were seen out and about together on numerous occasions.

He attended her wedding to James Matthews in May 2017, accompanied by Lady Gabriella.

Lady Gabriella, who is a writer and contributing editor, had been dating Thomas for a number of years when he proposed on the island of Sark in 2018.

Buckingham Palace later released details about the wedding service, with the hymns sung by the congregation including Tell Out My Soul, Be Thou My Vision and Love Divine, All Loves Excelling.

The readings were taken from Ecclesiastes III, Philippians IV, a passage from Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost, and O Tell Me The Truth About Love, by WH Auden.

Flowers arrangements inside the chapel featured coral sunset peonies, coral and white roses, white hydrangea, white delphiniums, apricot stocks and seasonal flowers, as well as the creamy ivory ‘Ella’ rose, by David Austin, named after the bride.

The charming cherry and apple blossom trees that stood outside St George’s were from Hillier Nurseries.

Isabella and Maud Windsor – Lady Gabriella’s nieces – and the other bridesmaids wore ivory dresses with blush underlays and sashes, completed with flower garlands.

The wedding reception was held at Frogmore House, where Harry and Meghan staged their wedding dinner, and the bride and groom cut a cake made by Fiona Cairns, who also made the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s cake.

The three-tiered confection was crafted from three recipes: fruit cake, Victoria sponge and Limoncello sponge.

It featured pale blush icing, adorned with seasonal sugar flowers and a delicate leaf border, drawing inspiration from the exquisite fabric found within Frogmore House.

Guests at the reception were served smoked Scottish salmon and asparagus risotto and canapes, as well as Caragh Chocolates from the Isle of Sark, where the couple were engaged.

The beautiful flower displays at the reception were created by John Plested.

The wedding of Lady Gabriella Windsor and Thomas Kingston was the third at St George’s Chapel in less than a year – following the star-studded nuptials of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank.

His wife paid tribute to her financier husband in a joint statement with his family, describing him as an ‘exceptional man who lit up the lives of all who knew him’. His tragic death was described as a ‘great shock to the whole family’.

An inquest will be held to establish the cause of death but there are no suspicious circumstances and no other parties involved.

Lady Gabriella, who is not a working member of the Royal Family, released a personal photo she took of her husband, showing him smiling and dressed in a casual pink shirt as he stood near a stretch of water in the sunshine.

In a statement with Mr Kingston’s family, she said: ‘It is with the deepest sorrow that we announce the death of Thomas Kingston, our beloved husband, son and brother.

‘Tom was an exceptional man who lit up the lives of all who knew him. His death has come as a great shock to the whole family and we ask you to respect our privacy as we mourn his passing.’

King Charles and Queen Camilla have sent their ‘most heartfelt thoughts and prayers’ to Lady Kingston and Mr Kingston’s family.

Mr Kingston was found dead at an address in Gloucestershire on Sunday evening, with emergency services called to the scene shortly after 6pm.

Elizabeth Debicki shocked fans on Sunday when she accepted a Screen Actors Guild Award for her role as Princess Diana in The Crown.

The 33-year-old, who won Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series, was quick to point out a bizarre detail about her outfit.

As she collected her award, the Tenet star revealed her heels had gotten caught on her designer Armani dress – and she was now barefoot.

‘Really, I didn’t expect this. People say that and I’m really not. I don’t really know what to say, so I’m just going to roll with it. “I don’t have any shoes on,” she began.

She then joked that since she didn’t have an acceptance speech prepared, she would just say whatever came to mind.

‘I really, really love my job. About a week ago I had the flu and this is what happens when I improve.

“To my beautiful Crown family and so many of you here tonight. It’s a pleasure to work with you. This job is such a gift.

‘It’s my mother’s birthday. Happy birthday, mom, thank you so much,” she added.

‘I had my shoes on, but they weren’t completely on. I didn’t check myself because I didn’t expect to win a prize. So I didn’t put my shoes on all the way,” Elizabeth later told Extra TV.

“When I got on stage they were flying all over the place, so I kicked them away.”

She beat out Jennifer Aniston for The Morning Show, Bella Ramsey for The Last of Us, Keri Russell for The Diplomat and Sarah Snook in Succession to take home the coveted award.

Debicki was dazzled when she arrived at the SAG Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Saturday.

The Crown actress looked as elegant as ever in a light blue sequin and lace dress with a backless design.

The delicate custom Armani Privé number featured mesh panels and a shimmering overlay with a jewel-encrusted neckline.

After a tough 118-day strike, the Screen Actors Guild honored the top performers in film and television at the 30th annual SAG Awards.

'I did not expect this. People say that and I'm really not. I don't really know what to say, so I'm just going to roll with it.

The king was sick – very sick. Doctors worried about his future while keeping the severity of his condition a secret from the public.

His immediate family closed ranks to guard his privacy, but in the wider royal circle they were already planning. A plan to abandon the age-old succession order and put a usurper on the throne.

The king in question was not Charles, but his grandfather, King George VI.

In the few weeks that the king disappeared from public view in the spring of 1949, the course of history could well have changed – and not for the better.

Prince Philip was close to his uncle Mountbatten, but neither was trusted by the palace courtiers

Who would be regent if King George VI could not fulfill his duties? To some, the Duke of Windsor seemed like an obvious answer. He is pictured with the Duchess in New York

King George had never enjoyed good health. He had survived surgery in 1949 but is seen here looking weak at the Braemar Highland games in September 1951.

King George had never enjoyed good health. He had survived surgery in 1949 but is seen here looking weak at the Braemar Highland games in September 1951.

The plot began when the king, known as Bertie, was admitted to hospital for an operation to sever a nerve at the base of his spine.

The risky procedure was intended to counteract the artereosclerosis he suffered from too much stress and too many cigarettes.

Bertie was a man struggling with ill health and although he would eventually recover and live on, this was a serious operation. He was in danger of losing his life.

What would happen if he suddenly left – or worse, stuck around?

At Buckingham Palace, the courtiers were in a downward spiral.

It’s hard to imagine now, but they were terrified of the influence Prince Philip had over Princess Elizabeth, his wife, over the past two years.

Not only did the palace’s old guard deeply dislike Philip, but their suspicion and distrust also extended to his uncle, Lord Mountbatten.

Mountbatten, a cunning old schemer, was loathed for planting his pushy nephew in the princess’s way – for none of the dour brigade could bring themselves to believe that she could actually have fallen in love with the handsome sailor.

They feared that Elizabeth would become Lord Mountbatten’s poodle.

At 23, she was far too young and impressionable to take up the challenge of head of state.

Mountbatten must be kept away from the instruments of power.

And so – quickly – talk grew of putting a regent on the throne if King George VI were to remain in office but were no longer able to fulfill his constitutional role.

Enter the Machiavellian figure of Kenneth de Courcy, a petty aristocrat with a penchant for intrigue, interference and deceit.

Born in Ireland, De Courcy had made his money by creating conspiracy theories and then selling them through a number of publications he owned.

He had become a close friend and advisor to a man who had many connections but was never known as a good judge of character: the Duke of Windsor.

What happened between the two over the next few weeks amounted to nothing less than betrayal.

Since the declaration of peace in 1945, De Courcy had whispered in the duke’s ear that – at home – the royal front line was weak.

The Duke and Duchess of Windsor, now based in France, relied on De Courcy and his high-level social contacts to gather all the palace gossip in London.

So they listened intently as the Irishman explained his plan.

If a regent was suddenly needed, he argued, who would they call? Old Queen Mary, widow of King George V and mother of the ailing king, was in her 80s. She looked like a remote and anachronistic figure.

There was the Duke of Gloucester, another brother of George VI and the Duke, but he was regarded as a joke by courtiers and politicians and by the royal family itself. (His name was Harry!).

There were no other close claimants to the throne.

All the Duke of Windsor had to do was play his cards right, De Courcy whispered, and the throne could be his – at least until young Elizabeth came of age.

“The King is seriously ill and out of circulation,” he wrote to the Windsors, “and will be out of circulation – facing the terrible tragedy of losing first one leg and then the other. He is suffering from a serious illness that is incurable and has spread throughout his body.’

The Duke and Duchess of Windsor pictured in May 1950.

The Duke and Duchess of Windsor pictured in May 1950. “I can’t sit and watch the Duke get lost,” she had written

These were lies, but they played a role in his story.

“I must tell you in confidence that there has been talk of a regency,” he continued, “and it seems likely that one will be appointed.”

So now he outlined to the Duke the details of his plot.

‘I should like to see you buy some farmland near London, and devote a large part of your time to experimental farming on the most advanced modern lines. This would be a great attraction for the country.’

Be there, standing in the wings, was his message. People are very suspicious of Mountbatten’s influence and remember your glory days as Prince of Wales. Elizabeth is too young – you have the track record.

He made no mention of the abdication.

Windsor took the bait. “We discussed that subject in Paris,” he replied to De Courcy.

‘It is certainly a matter of great delicacy, but at the same time an issue where it seems as if I have 50 percent of the negotiating power. I’d rather not say anything more about it in this letter, but I look forward to a future conversation with you.’

Wallis, his duchess, was involved in the plot.

“We’re always turning things around in our heads,” she wrote back.

‘There’s no doubt that something can be done – and perhaps a good thunderstorm would clear the sky. Anyway, I can’t sit around and watch the Duke get lost.’

Undoubtedly there existed in de Courcy’s mind a divide-and-conquer strategy worthy of the Tudor court.

If the duke were to succeed in gaining the regency, he would be in a position to expel the courtiers who disliked and distrusted him and appoint his own deputies.

Thus fortified, he could take on the politicians – and either win them over or deny them access to the palace, with all the privileges that traditionally come with close contact with the royal family. Politicians love those palace invitations!

It was treacherous to try to deny young Elizabeth her birthright, the throne. But with a fair wind it might be doable – if King George VI were to stick around for a while.
