On Wednesday, I boarded a flight from San Francisco to Las Vegas for the express purpose of watching college basketball.

Not to attend an actual basketball game, mind you. Those flights were headed to Omaha, Neb., and Charlotte, NC. In my case, I spend hundreds of dollars for the privilege of sitting (or standing) in various sportsbooks and watching parties to watch NCAA Tournament games that are readily available on the television in my living room.

If the high hotel prices and $250 tickets for reserved seats are any indication, hundreds of thousands of other sports fans are doing the same.

For many of them, betting is probably the draw, but these days you don’t have to fly to Vegas to place a sports bet. Alcohol consumption may be another, but that too is easily available for much less than a plane ticket.

The appeal of Vegas for March Madness is much the same as it is for millions of people filling out brackets and cheering their heads off for schools and players they had never heard of two hours earlier. That’s because the NCAA tournament is one of our country’s increasingly rare communal experiences.

In these polarizing times, when even the most innocent topic can spark outrage, there is still one thing that people from all parts of the country enjoy equally: supporting the underdog. There are no two sides to No. 16 seed Fairleigh Dickinson knocking off No. 1 seed Purdue (unless you’re a Purdue fan). There is no political agenda behind the disturbing St. Peter’s in Kentucky.

It’s nothing but pure, pure joy to watch for two hours as a team of complete unknowns, who play most of their games in front of 800 people, take on a bunch of future professionals from a power conference and come out on top. Or when, with a team’s season on the line, 19-year-old sophomores drain a 3-point buzzer-beater to etch themselves into “One Shining Moment” lore for the rest of their lives.

No other sporting event manages to deliver so many indelible moments year after year. Sure, there are “glitches” in professional sports. But if the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots in a Super Bowl, it will ultimately be one multi-millionaire team beating another team. Not exactly Oral Roberts beating Ohio State.

College football has had its share of Cinderella moments, like Appalachian State stunning Michigan or Boise State toppling Oklahoma. But when it comes to the biggest late-season games, it’s almost always Alabama, Georgia or Michigan beating another Alabama, Georgia or Michigan.

The NBA has LeBron, Giannis and Jokić. But there is no Sister Jean.

But above all, in all these sports there are no teams that the entire country supports. People don’t suddenly turn into Philadelphia Eagles fans once the NFL playoffs start. But if you’ve ever been in an arena where No. 13 is still hanging around in the second half, you know the buzz of 20,000 people suddenly turning into rabid Furman fans for the rest of the game.

The only thing you can compare it to is events like the World Cup or the Olympic Games, where an American team or athlete participates. But even the women’s national soccer team has become politicized, with the men causing collective fear mainly because they are so mediocre. And chances are you don’t even remember the names of most of the gold medalists from the last Olympics.

While every college basketball fan will forever remember the likes of Bryce Drew, Tyus Edney and Kris Jenkins.

That brings me back to Vegas. Although it doesn’t have to be Vegas. It could be your local Buffalo Wild Wings. Or the dive bar in your neighborhood. Or a sports bar close enough to sneak into on your lunch break.

March Madness is the one sporting event that is best enjoyed in the company of others. Experience the rollercoaster of scoring droughts and momentum swings in a room full of other captivated viewers as your Final Four pick tries to survive a first-round scare. High-five random people around you when Vermont sinks a 3-pointer and is nine points ahead of Duke.

Or running around the room screaming and hugging strangers when a kid from Long Beach State puts one at the buzzer to take down Arizona.

Enjoy the flight, wherever you go.

Some restaurants may promise an extraordinary experience, but none can deliver in this way.

Two-Michelin star chef Rasmus Munk, from Alchemist in Copenhagen, has announced that he will offer guests the chance to have a meal at the edge of space.

Next year, six lucky – and extremely wealthy – tourists will get the chance to fly in a ‘space balloon’ 3.5 kilometers above sea level.

During the six-hour experience, each diner will be served dishes inspired by the role of space exploration.

But at an astronomical price of $495,000 (£388,535) per ticket, this could be a high price to pay for a restaurant with (literally) no atmosphere.

The culinary expedition takes place aboard Space Perspective’s Neptune spaceship.

Despite its name, this spacecraft is not actually a spaceship, but rather a pressurized capsule suspended beneath a huge hydrogen balloon.

Without rockets or jet engines, the flight should be so gentle that anyone can participate without any training.

The balloon is planned to take off from Florida at a fairly gentle speed of 12 miles per hour.

At the highest point, guests can look down on Earth through the largest window ever launched into space.

According to Mr Munk, dinner will be served as guests watch the sun rise over the curvature of the Earth.

Importantly, he notes that the craft will not enter microgravity during the flight, so guests and food will not experience any weightlessness.

Mr Monk said: ‘In this experience, I want to highlight food as a common thread in our human existence, and it will be truly meaningful to serve it while gazing at the curvature of the Earth.

“I am honored to be part of what I believe will be a once-in-a-lifetime, transformative experience.”

The company has kept the details of the menu vague, aside from the caveat that they can’t cook with an open flame.

Given how small the capsule is, it’s not clear if the food will actually be prepared on the vessel or if it will simply be served there.

But if it’s anything like previous menus at Alchemist, the dinner will undoubtedly feature a host of new techniques.

Previous menu items, or “impressions” as the restaurant calls them, have included carpenter ants in candy, a cod eye gel and a dessert served in a silicone cup.

In 2010, the restaurant even created a sakura blossom dish for the Japanese space agency.

While it’s obviously extremely decent, the mission to dine six people in space is also keen to promote its socially conscious reputation.

Guests will ascend to the edge of space on the world’s first ‘carbon neutral spaceship’.

All proceeds will be donated to the Space Prize Foundation, a charity committed to improving the role of women within the space industry.

Alchemist also suggests that the experience of looking down on everyone on Earth can be “a sobering reminder that our fates are intertwined.”

Roman Chiporukha, founder of SpaceVIP, which organizes the experience, said: ‘This maiden voyage is just the first chapter in SpaceVIP’s mission to harness the transformative power of space travel to elevate human consciousness and shape the course of our collective evolution to give.’

The effect of looking at Earth from space, also called the overview effect, is a psychological phenomenon reported by some astronauts upon reaching space.

Those who visit space sometimes report feeling a change in consciousness or a connection to the fragility of the Earth.

In its statement, Alchemist writes that seeing Earth from space “has the power to create a cognitive shift and inspire a greater appreciation for Earth and a deep connection with humanity as a whole.”

But whether showing people the Earth while they enjoy a half-million-dollar dinner will actually break down the barriers that divide us remains to be seen.

Currently, Space Perspectives has yet to launch its first commercial flights, but it hopes to do so before the end of the year.

If successful, the company could join a number of other companies vying to provide the first wave of space tourism.

Capy Neko Cafe, ‘neko’ is the Japanese word for cat, combines the unique combination of animals – and despite what you might expect, it’s a match made in Heaven.

According to the cafe’s website, the capybara, named Ki-Chan, “moves at his own pace,” “loves to be petted” and “gets along well with the cats.”

Like many cat cafes in Japan, the cats are all rescue cats looking for their forever homes. The hub takes in cats and tries to put them in touch with foster parents.

The post has since racked up almost 35,000 likes as people were moved by Daniella’s positive outlook despite her tragic circumstances.

As she paid tribute to her family, fiancé Tom and dog Leo, Daniella – who worked as a ‘people administrator’ at a digital marketing agency – encouraged her network to ‘enjoy the little things’ in life and ‘cherish every moment ‘.

She wrote: ‘If you are reading this it means that I have passed away from battling cancer and my family is posting my last post on my behalf.

‘Firstly, I just want to say that not all cancers are caused by lifestyle choices; in some cases it is hereditary, or unfortunately it just happens.

‘In my case, despite being very healthy and active, a cancer started in my bile ducts that was not caused by anything I had control over, and my life was never the same.

‘Cholangiocarinoma is a rare aggressive form of cancer with often no clear cause and no cure. I really hope that more research is done into this horribly cruel disease in the coming years so that more lives can be saved.”

For her post, Daniella chose a black and white photo of her walking along the beach with her dog.

The emotional message continued: “So with that said, while we cannot control what happens to us, we can control how we respond. I chose not to mourn the life I lost despite being so devastated, but instead to enjoy every moment I had left.

‘As I have always said and believed: you should enjoy the little things in life and cherish every moment! Romanticize your life! Do what makes you happy and don’t let anyone take the joy of life away from you.

‘I loved my life. Everything I had achieved was what I wanted. I loved my job, my fiancé, my family, my friends and my dog, and the house we were buying and the future we were making for ourselves.

“Leo, my fur baby, was definitely brought into my life to brighten my darkest days.

‘And lastly to my sweet, beautiful Tom: I love you and always will. Thank you for supporting me and bringing so much love and happiness into my life. Now go enjoy your life, you deserve it.”

Daniella has worked in HR since July 2022 at the age of 26 and previously studied at Newcastle University.

In a post on her employer’s Instagram, she described her role as onboarding new starters and supporting employees.

The music lover said her dream dinner guests would be Adele and Dave Grohl and described how she loved football, dining out and spending time with loved ones.

She added that her three-year-old English setter Leo needed lots of walks and attention.

Seven months ago, Daniella posted an update on her battle with cancer, revealing she had undergone a liver resection and gallbladder surgery.

Posting photos of herself in the hospital ward, Daniella said she was taking time to “rest, recover and learn to walk again” as she asked for TV and movie recommendations.

Daniella’s post has left the internet heartbroken, with many rushing to express their condolences and well wishes for her family.

One said: ‘I’m literally in tears. After being diagnosed with stage 1A breast cancer in August, followed by surgery (lumpectomy) followed by radiation, this message from her hits home.’

Another said: ‘Wow. What courageous words from someone I have never met, but who has taught me a lot.’

A third commented: ‘You are an amazing lady, what a beautiful message to leave us, may you rest in paradise.’

SCIENTISTS have revealed a brain trick that can help you enjoy life.

The technique is called ‘dishabituating’ and is explained in a new book Look Again: The power of noticing what has always been there.

Experts Tali Sharot And Cass R. Sunstein wrote the recently published book.

They both discussed the dehabitation theory in an interview with The New Scientist.

“You can wean yourself off by removing yourself from an environment because when you come back, you’ll see it with fresh eyes, whether it’s spending a few days away from home, making changes to your routine, trying a new skill,” Sharot told the news outlet.

The trick doesn’t necessarily mean removing yourself from environments you don’t enjoy.

It can also mean taking a break from the things that make you happy.

Sharot gave the example of a group of study participants listening to a song.

Some participants listened to the song all the way through, while others listened to it with pauses.

Those who took a break while listening ended up enjoying the song more.

“Anything that is good is really good at first, but then the joy diminishes because we get used to it.

“But if you take a break and then go back, the joy is now great again,” Sharot told The New Scientist.

The expert also revealed that shorter holidays may be better for your happiness.

According to the book, 43 hours of vacation is the happiest moment.

‘The key to this disruption – to seeing, feeling and noticing again – is change.

“By temporarily changing your environment, changing the rules, changing the people you interact with – or even just taking a step back and imagining change – you regain sensitivity, allowing you to identify the bad more clearly and appreciate the good more deeply,” the book’s description explains.
