Forget cat cafes: this Tokyo coffee shop lets customers enjoy a cup of tea while petting a capybara – the largest living rodent

Rodents generally get bad press, but they are the stars of the show at this quirky Tokyo cafe.

At Café Capyba, guests can enjoy a hot drink next to two large capybaras named Kohaku and Pisuke.

The rodents, the largest in the world and native to South America, roam freely in the small establishment, giving customers the chance to get up close and personal.

According to his websitethe ‘cozy’ café is a ‘place of healing’, and visitors are encouraged to pet the furry creatures and take photos.

“Take time to relax as you observe their relaxed presence,” the website reads.

Snacks to feed the capybaras are available for purchase inside. Pellets and vegetables cost 330 yen (£1.73/$2.19) each.

In addition to the two rodents, the cafe offers coffee, lattes, tea and soft drinks for visitors to enjoy.

Admission costs 1,250 yen (£6.55/$8.31) for 30 minutes, with 10-minute extensions available for payments of 330 yen (£1.73/$2.19).

The company does not accept reservations and due to its popularity, visitors are advised to arrive well in advance.

Capy Neko Cafe, ‘neko’ is the Japanese word for cat, combines the unique combination of animals – and despite what you might expect, it’s a match made in Heaven.

According to the cafe’s website, the capybara, named Ki-Chan, “moves at his own pace,” “loves to be petted” and “gets along well with the cats.”

Like many cat cafes in Japan, the cats are all rescue cats looking for their forever homes. The hub takes in cats and tries to put them in touch with foster parents.

Each session lasts 50 minutes and costs 2,800 yen (£14.65/$18.58) for adults and 1,500 yen (£7.85/$9.95) for children aged six to 14.
