President Vladimir Putin demanded a new six-year term in a presidential contest in which he faced no real competition. He is expected to hold a rally in Red Square to formally declare victory – portraying the vote as a public show of support for his invasion of Ukraine.

Here’s the latest.

Some Russians quietly expressed their dissent yesterday. They turned the rubber-stamp election into a high-profile protest, with many forming long lines at polling stations to express their dissatisfaction with Putin as he prepares for his fifth term as president.

Aleksei Navalny, the opposition leader who died in prison last month, had urged his supporters to vote at noon local time. Lines quickly formed at polling stations in major cities, and several people in Moscow told The Times they had come to show their support for Navalny.

One woman, who gave her name as Dayana, 22, said she found it encouraging to stand among fellow Putin critics and feel “that I am not alone, that there are many of us.”

But there was no sign the protest would deter Putin, who has ruled Russia since 1999. He extended his rule until 2030 and, if he stays until the end of his next term, will have the longest term of any Russian leader since Catherine the Great. Great late 18th century.

A predetermined outcome: Even Putin’s spokesman said last year that the elections were “not really democracy” but “costly bureaucracy.” In the occupied territories of Ukraine, armed soldiers watched as people voted for a president.

What’s next: Many fear that a new wave of mobilization will soon follow the elections.

Updates from the war:

A maritime aid shipment reached Gaza’s northern shores this weekend, the first in nearly two decades, and another shipment of aid is expected to leave Cyprus soon.

But experts and aid groups said diversifying delivery methods had failed to alleviate hunger and widespread malnutrition. They said that the main method had to be by land, and that the best way to prevent a famine was a ceasefire.

There could be some movement towards a lull in the fighting after Hamas weakened its demand for a permanent ceasefire. The new proposal would allow the release of hostages in exchange for a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces.

Risks: At least twenty people were killed in an attack on aid trucks in Gaza on Thursday. Officials in Gaza accused Israel of a “targeted” attack; Israel blamed Palestinian gunmen. The UN human rights office this month documented 10 attacks on Gazans waiting for aid.

The United States: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded yesterday to Senator Chuck Schumer’s criticism: “We are not a banana republic.”

In 2020, Di Sanh Duong became the first person to be charged under Australia’s foreign interference laws. Late last month, he was sentenced to nearly three years in prison, although he is expected to serve a year.

In the case, the government battled Duong, a suburban tombstone maker, over interpretations of two words (“us Chinese”) and a $25,000 donation to a hospital that — prosecutors said — would at one point be the base become a pro-China pitch to a lawmaker. The question at stake: Was Duong a shrewd operator for Beijing, or just a bombastic braggart?

In his only in-depth interview since his arrest, Duong – who is ethnically Chinese – told The Times he was a scapegoat for the geopolitical tensions. He said his prosecution was intended to send a message: “Don’t get too close to China. ”

An 82-year-old retired professor in California found a new calling: offering free driving lessons to women from Afghanistan. His waiting list is 50 deep and he sometimes teaches five consecutive classes, some up to two hours long.

“Our lives have completely changed,” said one student after she and her sister passed their mock exam.

The Australian letter: The country devotes significant time and resources to feral cat management. Domestic issues are a more difficult problem.

  • Dangerous pet: Authorities seized a blind alligator from a New York man who had kept it for 34 years and let people into swimming pools with it.

  • Look after: There may be a potentially dangerous cat on the loose in Fukuyama, Japan. (It fell into a chemical tank.)

  • To discover: A treasure hunter found a Viking sword in an English waterway. It is probably more than 1000 years old.

British designer Phoebe Philo, who has been called ‘the Chanel of her generation’, transformed both Chloé and Celine. Then she left the industry almost seven years ago and virtually disappeared from view.

Late last year, Philo returned to start a brand in her name. The sky-high expectations were faltered by complaints about the prices, the vision and the impossible returns policy. As she prepared for her second drop, she spoke to our top fashion critic in her first formal interview in a decade.

“Maybe there was an expectation that I could have offered everything to everyone right away,” Philo said. “And that is simply not possible. It takes time and effort to create most things that have meaning. You have to stand for something.”

GARETH TAYLOR has extended his reign as boss of Manchester City’s Women’s Super League side after signing a new contract today.

The contract for the 51-year-old head coach, who led the team to FA and Conti Cup victories, will see him remain in charge until 2027.

Taylor’s new contract comes two days after Taylor oversaw Man City’s 12th win in all competitions with their 2-1 victory against Everton in the top tier.

His team, who sit second and level with WSL leaders Chelsea, are chasing their first league title win under their gaffer.

The last time the Cityzens lifted the top trophy was under former boss Nick Cushing.

Taylor, who took over at City in May 2020, said: “I am very pleased to commit to City for another three seasons.

“I think what we are doing here and trying to achieve is a long-term project of sustainability and success.

“Our ambition was always to be at the top and we did that.

“It took a lot of hard work from a lot of people behind the scenes.

“The players have really believed in what we are trying to do and achieve.”

During Taylor’s reign, he has experienced a period of transition within the team.

This followed the retirement of English heroines Ellen White, Jill Scott and Karen Bardsley and the departure of several international stars including Lucy Bronze, Keira Walsh, Caroline Weir and Hayley Raso.

Over the past two years, City have strengthened their ranks with the likes of Yui Hasegawa and Mary Fowler, including Japanese and Australian stars Yui Hasegawa and Mary Fowler.

Other great signings include former Barcelona and Atletico Madrid defenders Leila Ouahabi and Laia Aleixandri.

City’s signings in January and last August included England Under-23 forward Laura Blindkilde Brown and Dutch midfielder Jill Roord, who is currently sidelined with a knee ligament injury.

And last year the club appointed ex-Denmark women’s boss Nils Nielsen as director of football for their women’s team and Charlotte O’Neil as managing director.

Taylor, whose side play Chelsea in the Conti Cup semi-final on Thursday, added: “Nils has helped in a number of ways.

“His experience as a head coach in women’s football is also very useful because you don’t talk to someone who hasn’t been there.

“Charlotte who I worked with before at the Academy.

“What she will do is be very clear in our objectives and very clear in what we can do.”

Regarding Taylor’s contract extension, Nielsen said: “I am very pleased that Gareth has agreed to continue his great work in our program for years to come.

“We have a clear strategy on how we want to move forward, and securing Gareth to lead the team is a key factor.

“Now we can all focus on ending this season in style and preparing for seasons to come by following the plan.”

Man City, who include Lionesses Quintet, Alex Greenwood, Chloe Kelly, Lauren Hemp, Jess Park and Khiara Keating, currently have the best defensive record in the WSL this season.

And forward Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw currently leads the WSL’s top scorer charts this season with 15 goals in 14 games at the top level.

City’s recent wins include a hard-fought 1-0 defeat to title rivals Chelsea last month.

As well as their quest to be crowned WSL champions for the second time in their history, City are hoping to play in the Champions League again next season.

Taylor’s side last played in the competition in September 2021, when they were knocked out in the qualifying stages by Spanish club Real Madrid.

Saudi Arabia, the de facto leader of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, said on Sunday it would extend oil production cuts through June, noting it was acting “in coordination with some” other states. Saudi allies including Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates said Sunday they would also continue their cuts.

The decision to maintain production cuts was expected and appears intended to support otherwise weak oil prices. Some analysts predict that oil supply will exceed demand in the first half of this year. Without further cuts, prices could fall.

Saudi Arabia described the measure as a “precautionary measure.” Holding back oil production is “aimed at supporting the stability and balance of oil markets,” the kingdom said in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency.

The Saudis said the one million barrels per day they started cutting in July “will be gradually returned depending on market conditions.”

Giacomo Romeo, an analyst at investment bank Jefferies, said on Sunday the decision confirmed the group was “in no rush to return” stock.

The Saudis are selling far less oil than they can produce as non-OPEC countries, especially the United States and Guyana, increase production. Russia, a member of OPEC Plus, has also managed to produce more oil than some analysts expected after invading Ukraine in 2022.

Oil demand growth this year is also expected to be modest, at about 1.5 million barrels per day, or about 1.5 percent of global demand, according to Goldman Sachs.

Sunday’s announcement follows the Saudis’ announcement in January that they were halting a campaign to increase the amount of oil that Saudi Aramco, the state oil giant, can produce. Aramco had planned to produce 13 million barrels per day, an increase of one million per day over what it can currently produce.

That January decision confirmed that the kingdom “wants a tight oil market,” Goldman Sachs analysts said in a recent research note.

Moreover, the Saudis appear to have decided, at least for now, that there is little point in spending billions of dollars to pump at levels much higher than the current nine million barrels per day they are producing.

Oil prices have been rising in recent weeks, partly on concerns that the war between Israel and Gaza will spill over into the oil-producing countries of the Middle East. Brent crude, the international benchmark, sold for about $83.55 late last week, the highest level in about four months.

Analysts say price increases so far remain modest because there has been no actual disruption to oil production due to the fighting.

Instead, OPEC and its allies voluntarily withdraw oil from the market. In November, several OPEC Plus members, including the United Arab Emirates, Iraq and Kuwait, joined the Saudis in agreeing to new cuts.

The millions of barrels per day of production these countries are keeping off the market could be used in an emergency to offset most potential disruptions, analysts say.

Money laundering case: Bombay HC extends Sameer Wankhede’s exemption from arrest till March 27

Mumbai: The court postponed the case until March 27. The case was adjourned after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) sought time to file a brief on Sameer Wankhede’s petition challenging ED’s Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) against him. ECIR is a formal registration of a complaint filed by the ED. Wankhede challenged the ECIR in the Bombay HC and sought to quash the case against him. Further, the Bombay HC has scheduled a hearing on the case before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against Wankhede on the same date. The court was told that the Advocate General would appear in both cases on that date himself.

Earlier on February 10, the Enforcement Directorate initiated the money laundering case against Wankhede, admitting a CBI FIR alleging that he had sought a bribe of Rs 25 crore from actor Shah Rukh Khan’s family to spare his son in the cruise drug case.

Wankhede had expressed surprise over the fact that the ED’s ECIR is based on a CBI FIR, which is under dispute before the Bombay HC.

Last year, the CBI booked Wankhede for allegedly demanding Rs 25 crore as bribe for not framing actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan in the drugs-on-cruise case. The agency said the deal was struck for Rs 18 crore, adding that Wankhade’s assets were disproportionate to his known sources of income. The FIR copy stated that he could not justify the expenses incurred during his foreign visit.

iPhone users are in for a FRESH Apple update, and with it comes a new battery boosting feature, as well as a bonus for Siri and a security upgrade.

It doesn’t stop there: there are also some bug fixes coming that will fix issues with the Find My app, as well as an annoying issue that Dual SIM users are currently facing.

1

The Stolen Device Protection feature that rolled out to iPhones in the latest update is also about to get better

iOS 17.4 is expected to hit phones in about a week.

iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro users will get a refresh on the Battery Status page in Settings.

It will show users the number of battery cycles, in addition to a production date.

The number of battery cycles on an iPhone is important and is a key indicator of the lifespan of your handset.

Knowing the battery cycle can help you determine when to replace your battery.

According to Apple, “iPhone 14 and earlier model batteries are designed to retain 80 percent of their original capacity through 500 full charge cycles under ideal conditions.

“Batteries of iPhone 15 models are designed to retain 80 percent of their original capacity over 1,000 full charge cycles under ideal conditions.”

Siri upgrade

With iOS 17.4, Siri gets a new option to announce messages you receive in any supported language.

Most read in Phones and gadgets

Inside Settings > Siri & Search the option To inform with Siri has replaced Send messages automatically.

In the Messages with Siri option is the ability to add a new language.

If you tap this, you can have Siri send messages in other languages, such as Arabic, Spanish and Thai.

Before this update, Siri could only send messages in English.

The three little-known iPhone tricks to save your battery

iOS 17.4: the biggest Apple change ever?

Apple’s iOS 17.4 update could be its biggest ever, as the tech company is forced to make some major changes to its App Store rules.

The Silicon Valley giant will soon allow alternative app stores to appear on iPhones bought in the EU, following a regulatory row with the bloc.

This not only offers iPhone owners a new selection of free apps, but also lower costs in Apple’s official App Store.

Currently, iPhone users around the world can only download apps through Apple’s own App Store.

But the company has been accused of creating a monopoly in the app world by giving developers no choice but to go through their own channels and pay for the privilege of doing so.

Apple charges developers up to 30 percent commission on all in-app purchases.

This regime has resulted in developers who do not meet Apple’s standards, or do not agree to pay the fees, being banned from all Apple gadgets and their users.

It’s this rule that led to Fortnite being banned from the App Store in 2020, after developer Epic Games violated its in-app payment guidelines.

Protection against stolen devices

The Stolen Device Protection feature that rolled out to iPhones in the latest update is also about to get better.

It aims to keep certain actions, like accessing your saved passwords or iCloud, behind a Face ID or Touch ID passcode in case a thief ever gets their hands on the device.

It works by requesting identity verification via Face ID or Touch ID for sensitive actions like changing your Apple ID password.

With iOS 17.4, users will soon have the option to choose between the feature that automatically turns on in all unknown locations, or ‘Always’.

Bug fixes

Bug fixes in iOS 17.4 include a fix for Dual SIM users where the phone number changes from primary to secondary and is visible to the group they messaged.

And a fix for the issue where contact photos are blank in the Find My app.

A Moscow court on Friday extended the pre-trial detention of an American reporter for The Wall Street Journal, who is awaiting a hearing on an espionage charge that he, his newspaper and the US government vehemently deny.

The 32-year-old reporter, Evan Gershkovich, who was arrested in March 2022 during a reporting trip to the Russian city of Yekaterinburg, was ordered to remain in jail until at least March 30, according to the newspaper. a statement by the news service of the Moscow justice system. It was the fourth time Mr Gershkovich's detention has been extended, and it means he will spend at least a year in Russian custody.

A video of Mr. Gershkovich, posted with the statement, showed him sitting in a courthouse cage listening to the verdict, wearing jeans and a dark hoodie, with his arms folded. If convicted, Mr. Gershkovich could face up to 20 years in prison in a Russian penal colony.

On January 18, the U.S. Ambassador to Moscow, Lynne M. Tracy, visited Mr. Gershkovich in prison. In a statement at the time the embassy said“We continue to call for Evan's immediate release.”

Russian lawyers who have worked on similar cases say it usually takes a year and a half for such proceedings to go to trial, and then it can take another six months. Russian investigators have not yet publicly presented any evidence to support the espionage charge against Mr. Gershkovich.

Russian authorities have suggested that they might be open to a prisoner swap for Mr Gershkovich, but only after a verdict is reached in his case. Matthew Miller, a spokesman for the US State Department, said in December that Washington had done so a “substantial” offer to exchange for Mr. Gershkovich and another American in custody, Paul Whelan, but that Moscow had rejected it.

Mr. Gershkovich was the first American journalist arrested on espionage charges since the end of the Cold War. In doing so, he underlined the extent to which Russia's invasion of Ukraine has damaged relations between Moscow and Washington.

The U.S. government has labeled Mr. Gershkovich “wrongfully detained,” which essentially means the U.S. government considers him a political prisoner.

Other Americans detained in Russia who have been given this designation include basketball star Brittney Griner, who was arrested on drug trafficking charges and released in a prisoner swap in December 2022, and Mr. Whelan, a former Marine and business executive who is a serving a 16-year prison sentence. -year prison sentence on espionage charges that the United States calls politically motivated.

In October, Russian authorities arrested Alsu Kurmasheva, an editor of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, a U.S. broadcaster funded by the U.S. government. Ms Kurmasheva, who has dual Russian and US citizenship, was accused of failing to register as a “foreign agent”.

Indian Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has expressed confidence in the rise of Africa, saying that the restoration of the world's balance and polarity will not be complete until the continent takes the place it deserves .

External Affiaris Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar

New Delhi: Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. S. Jaishankar, while addressing the Nigeria-India Business Council (NIBC), on Tuesday extended India's support to Africa. He said that 'India is betting on the rise of Africa' and that the restoration of world balance and multipolarity will not be complete until the continent is put in its rightful place.

In his address to the Nigeria-India Business Council (NIBC), the minister said the rebalancing and reordering of a new world order will only happen if its core is economic, meaning the rise of Africa the economic rise of Africa must be. Africa.

India's confidence in Africa

He further stated: “That obviously involves choices, because it is very difficult to move up in the global order by being a market for others or simply by being a supplier of resources.”

“Africa is on the rise, and India is betting on the rise of Africa,” Jaishankar said. “Because there is, objectively speaking, “so much growing for Africa in terms of demography, in terms of resources, in terms of ambition, in terms of, increasingly, policy alignment,” India is placing its bet on the continent's rise. He stated that the future was clearly powerful and would be very different and more promising in the near future.

“We bet on Africa because… we have a shared past, not always a happy history, not between us, but between us and some other people. However, this history has greatly increased solidarity. And this solidarity today makes me state that very clearly for us, when we talk about a changing world order,” Jaishankar said.

India-Africa Partnership Sectors

He listed a number of areas where the India-Africa relationship could develop, including digital public infrastructure, green and clean growth, water, agricultural sustainability and security, and the blue economy.

The minister's speech to the NIBC marked the end of his two-country tour. He had traveled to Nigeria on Sunday after flying in from the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in Uganda. He is the first Indian Foreign Minister to travel to Nigeria.

According to Dr. Jaishankar, Nigeria is India's most important economic partner in Africa. He also stated that the two countries do between $13 billion and $15 billion in trade annually and that New Delhi has invested about $30 billion in Nigeria.

“But having said that,” he asserted, “I would also urge you not to be complacent, to look at the potential… Indian exports in the year just completed amounted to $766 billion… and I'm sure you would too. I would certainly like it if (for) more of that share to come to Nigeria.” To build the business relationship even stronger, the governments of both countries must find constructive and practical solutions to challenges in banking, insurance, credit guarantees, air connectivity and trade arrangements, Jaishankar said.
