Chennai: A Chennai Super Kings (CSK) staff touched MS Dhoni’s feet as the captain arrived at the team hotel on Tuesday ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. In a video that went viral on social media, a person wearing CSK’s shorts and green T-shirt immediately touched Dhoni’s feet with both hands as the skipper came out of his car at the team hotel. Meanwhile, the person touching Dhoni’s feet is believed to be CSK manager Russell Radhakrishnan, according to social media.

The defending champions posted a photo of Dhoni, who led them to their fifth title last season, getting out of a vehicle on social media, captioning it “#THA7A Dharisanam!” Speculation is rife that this season will be Dhoni’s last as a player. Last year, the 42-year-old mainly came to bat towards the end of the CSK innings.

CSK started their pre-season training camp on Saturday, with the first batch of CSK players landing here a day earlier. The players who have arrived so far include Deepak Chahar, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Simarjeet Singh, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, Mukesh Choudhary, Prashant Solanki, Ajay Mandal, Shaik Rasheed and Nishant Sindhu (all-rounder).

CSK will open their IPL 2024 campaign against Royal Challengers Bangalore here on March 22. Dhoni, one of the only two captains to win the IPL five times, played with a leg injury last year. The 42-year-old opted for surgery immediately after IPL 2023 and was in rehabilitation.

Meanwhile, CSK bought six players at the auction held in Dubai last year, with Kiwi duo Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell grabbing all the attention. The defending champions also secured the services of all-rounder SHardul Thakur, besides spending hugely on the uncapped Sameer Rizvi.

A row has erupted between locals of a quiet hamlet, the billionaire ruler of Dubai and shooting groups at his Essex estate.

The billionaire, who owns nearly 5,000 acres of farming land in Essex, allows pheasant and pigeon shoots to take place on land near Braintree.

However, locals living in the tiny hamlet of Bardfield Saling say the ‘boozy shoots’ which take place at least twice a week have ‘blighted their lives’ for the last five years. 

Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s company Saker Estates and Essex Farms granted permission for the Yorney Valley Shoot to use the vast lands. Drone photos taken by MailOnline show the extent of land which is being used.

The shoot, overseen by manager Keith Nicholls, offers day experiences from £645 to £1,290 with the chance to shoot up to 200 birds between September and January. 

A summary of the experience states: ‘Our shoot is situated in Essex around Great Sailing it is made up of woods and cover crop where we release both French and English partridge and pheasants.

‘The topography of our land means we can show good sporting birds. We cater for 150 to 200 bird days for up to 10 guns.

‘We offer a good days sport with the hospitality to match with over 15 drives to choose from we can arrange each teams day to suit their needs from partridge drives to pheasant drives, with the addition of woodcock we have something for everyone.’

Laura Thompson, 52, who has lived in the quaint hamlet with her husband Adam, 54, for the last six years, told MailOnline: ‘The Sheikh of Dubai who owns the land doesn’t seem to care. Why shoot near our houses when they have thousands of acres to do it in?

‘For five months of the year, the shooting has blighted our lives. It feels like we’re living in misery from the constant loud sounds of gunfire.’

Mrs Thompson, who has lived in the countryside all her life, explained: ‘From the sound of the first gunshot at around 9am, the living hell starts. It’s stressful. 

‘The participants are also drinking alcohol during the day which is concerning.’

Since moving to the area, the volunteer horse welfare officer, who lives less than 50m from where the shoots take place, also says the 4×4 vehicles from the shoots were making the conditions of local roads poor.

She explained: ‘Just this year alone, the shoot has left a trail of devastation, including byways, thick mud tracks on our little lanes. They’re trashed.

‘Their tractor and heavy vehicles crush verges and ditches cause field drainage water to run down the road making them treacherous especially when it freezes, not to mention half dead and dead birds.

‘The council have had to clean the road as it is like a mud bath from October onwards.

Mrs Thompson, who also keeps two horses called Mr Bojangles and Herbie at her property, also said the animals were left distressed and left shaken by gunfire.

She added: ‘Our horses are absolutely terrified.

‘I have had to pay thousands in vet fees due to the close proximity of the shooters.

‘I try and keep the horses in as much as possible on the two days when the shoots take place, but it becomes a welfare issue when they are contained in excess of 24 hours with no exercise.’

The 52-year-old said she has constantly asked for the shoot to be moved further away from her home but is just ignored.

Mrs Thompson concluded: ‘I have kept horses and lived in the county all my life, shootings are a country pursuit and private, well run shoots are a completely different matter, they are held away from residential areas, on private land and tracks, this is not the case here.

‘I have reached out to the Sheikh via various channels and organisations that he owns and received zero response.’

Laura’s husband Adam Thompson, 52, said: ‘We are always on our guard.

‘We have to keep our horses and animals in during these times and can’t even go for a walk ourselves. It’s horrendous from the moment they start shooting.’

Mr Thompson added: ‘We live in the country, so we do expect shooting to go on but not over our house and so close to our animals.

‘I have had to pick up dead birds in our garden. Some are not even dead so I had to put them out of their misery.’

Stephen Woodcraft, 73, who has lived in the hamlet for nearly four decades, said: ‘The landowners and shoot managers are treating locals poorly and have no regarding for us.

‘They have a cavalier attitude and just do what they want. I don’t enjoy the fact they are running this business here.

‘They live in a shear amount of mess on the road. This winter has been horrendous.’

Another local, who has lived in Bardfield Saling for 30 years, said she had to replace windows at her property constantly all the time due to them being smashed by gun cartridges.

The local, who did not want to be named, also used to look after rescue deer but had to give it up because of the distress the shoots were causing the animals.

She said: ‘I rescued injured deer and recouped them and sent them back into the wild. They were always traumatised when the shoots happen and it in turn traumatised us. 

‘When you hear that first gunshot, if you’re not expecting it, it literally goes through you and shocks you. There is no notice at all when they start, you have to find out yourself.

‘I can’t go outside in the garden myself or have children outside when the shooting is going on. 

‘Where they are driving and firing at the birds is towards my property, it should not be happening.’

Another local resident of the hamlet of 40 years said: ‘This is not a sport that everyone can afford, all the customers that come here have big disposable incomes.

‘These people that come are not local and are not interesting in protecting us or our environment.’

They added: ‘I’ve had gun cartridges landing on my head and my vehicles.’

Another said: ‘You can see and hear the participants of the shoot drinking. They’re loud, noisy and at times unpleasant.’

The group of locals said they all attempted to contact Mr Nicholls and Keith Daily who oversees Saker Estates and Essex Farms to complain and resolve the solution.

It is understood the shooting events start at Little Lodge Farm which is part of the Essex Farms estate.

Mr and Mrs Thompson explained: ‘They never seem to want to engage, they are constantly unhelpful when you confront them about anything. Our cries for help fall on deaf ears.’

MailOnline has also learnt of another account of a resident calling 999 after gun cartridges hit their grandchildren whilst they were in a garden paddling pool.

Reviews of the Yourney Valley Shoot by attendees describe the luxury days they are offered by Mr Nicholls and his team.

One said: ‘The day starts with a tea/coffee and egg, sausage bacon roll in their lovely dining room. 

‘We stopped around 11.30 for Champers/Sloe gin, sausage rolls, pork pies, cakes and biscuits. 

‘At the end of the day we all sat down to a wonderful lunch prepared by their chef. Various wines, beers etc were also available.’

Another impressed customer said: ‘I was seriously impressed with the number of partridge I had the opportunity to shoot at on the fourth drive, and was pretty thankful to have a loader!

‘Spent the day with a wonderful team of guns, beaters, picker ups, all very friendly and welcoming.

‘Elevenses was great and there were plenty of drinks and nibbles on offer.’

It comes after locals living near the Sheikh of Dubai’s £75m estate in Surrey expressed anger at the actions of the Sheikh and his security guards after a series of recent building projects.

The historic Longcross estate, near Chobham in Surrey, was purchased by Sheikh Mohammed in the 1990s as a place to escape the stifling summer heat in the Gulf.

Projects include the construction of warehouses to accommodate items used by his  300 staff at the estate as well as accommodation buildings.

Sheikh Mohammed, worth around £4 billion, was also accused of showing ‘cynical disregard’ for planning laws by erecting a 6ft ‘prison-style’ spiked metal fence around his estate. 

Saker Estates said they were not available to comment on the issue. Mr Nicholls was approached for comment.

After the murder, the four suspects sent a kidnap message to Yash’s family using the victim’s mobile phone and demanded a ransom of Rs 6 crore with the aim of misleading the police.

A Noida student who went missing for the past few days was allegedly murdered by his four friends and they buried his body in a field in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, according to police. The victim, identified as Yash Mittal, was a first year BBA student of a premier college in Greater Noida and lived in Amroha. On February 27, his father, Pradeep Mittal, filed a missing case with Greater Noida police after Yash was not found on the college campus after he suddenly disappeared the day before.

According to an NDTV report, his father Deepak Mittal informed the police after he started receiving ransom messages and demanded Rs. 6 crore in exchange for his son’s release. According to police footage, Yash left the university on Monday and was on the phone. The police, who retrieved Yash’s call details, found that he was on call with one of his friends Rachit. Yash usually hangs out with Rachit, Shivam, Sushant and Shubham, police said.

According to police, Yash was invited to a party in Amroha on Monday. During the party, a fight broke out and Yash was killed, police said. The suspect buried the body in a field and it was recovered after Rachit identified the location, police told NDTV.

During interrogation, Rachit told the police that Yash was called for a party in Amroha on February 26. On the same day, the victim along with Rachit and three other men went to a forest in the Tigriya region of Amroha, where Yash had a dispute with others. The four men then strangled Yash and buried his body in a pit about two meters deep.

Rachit further confirmed that after the murder, the four suspects sent a kidnap message to Yash’s family using the victim’s mobile phone and demanded a ransom of Rs 6 crore with the aim of misleading the police.

Dadri police station and SWAT team recovered Yash Mittal’s body from the well in the presence of his family members. The post-mortem procedure is being conducted by Gajraula police.

THE historic Odysseus lunar lander was left on its side after tripping over its own feet.

The spacecraft landed Thursday evening in the first privately funded space landing.

The craft’s laser-based rangefinders failed in flight but managed to avoid an emergency landing.

However, experts believe the six-legged device has now tripped over its own feet, Reuters reports.

CEO Stephen Altemus, whose company built and operated the lander, told reporters that the spacecraft reportedly hit one of its landing feet on the uneven lunar surface and fell over.

The vessel is believed to be propped on a rock, he added.

Crucially, the company boss said his team was still in contact with the vessel.

But he added that two of the spacecraft’s antennas were pointed toward the surface, which will limit communications.

The mission will help advance landing technology for future missions and also help determine how landings can disrupt the lunar surface.

Mr Altemus said: “If you think back to the time of Apollo, there wasn’t one mission that went absolutely perfect, so you have to be flexible.

“You have to be innovative and persevere, and we persevered until the last moments to get this soft touchdown the way we wanted.”

NASA hopes to return astronauts to the moon’s surface in the fall of 2026, after announcing earlier this year that schedules had been pushed back by about a year because safety was a top priority.

Under the Artemis program, the Lunar Gateway will be built – a space station where astronauts can live and work.

The successful mission, IM-1, comes a month after another US spacecraft, Peregrine, failed to reach the moon’s surface following a fuel leak.

The failure of Peregrine, operated by US company Astrobotic, marked the third time a private company has failed to achieve a soft landing on the lunar surface.

The fin whale, the world's second-largest animal after the blue whale, now lives full-time in the waters around New York and New Jersey, according to a new study that tracked the ocean giants through their songs.

This endangered whale typically spends the summer in feeding grounds in the Arctic and Antarctic waters and migrates to the tropics to reproduce and give birth in the winter.

But some fin whales live year-round in the New York City area, according to new research from a team of scientists from the Wildlife Conservation Society in The Bronx and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts.

The new research, combined with older data from this region, suggests these whales may have been living there for a decade or more.

Four years of audio recordings made from a buoy located about 40 miles off the coast of Long Island, New York, revealed that male fin whales remain in the area year-round.

The buoys captured singing whales every month of the study period.

Males are the only ones who sing, but since fin whales mate in winter, females are likely to be nearby when the males sing their winter songs. And while the females may migrate during the warmer months, at least some males seem to stick around, the scientists found.

The area where these whales live is known as the New York Bight, which extends outward in approximately a triangular shape east of Long Island, New York, and south of Cape May, New Jersey.

Fin whales grow to about 80 feet long from tip to tail, and as adults they weigh 40 to 80 tons — 80,000 to 160,000 pounds.

They can live 80 to 90 years, but they are threatened by climate change, entanglement in fishing gear, lack of prey due to overfishing, ocean noise such as radar tests, and being hit by ships.

“While they may not be seen as close to shore as other whales and dolphins, it is truly remarkable that the second largest animal to ever live on this earth can be found here year-round here in the New York Bight for our coasts is present,” the study said. co-author Howard Rosenbaum, director of the Wildlife Conservation Society's Ocean Giants Program, in a rack.

“Hopefully our efforts will lead to increased efforts and best practices to better protect these amazing, endangered animals in the NY Bight.”

Females give birth every two to three years, after a gestation period of 11 to 11.5 months.

Scientists believe that fin whales are monogamous and form bonds between mating pairs.

Because there is almost a year between the time they mate and the time they give birth, their annual migrations bring them back to the same location for both events.

This likely means that calves are being born and adult whales are mating in the waters around New York and New Jersey.

Currently, the fin whales that live in the northwest Atlantic Ocean — including in the New York Bight — are managed as a single population, but previous studies and the new study have identified multiple groups of whales, the authors wrote.

“More information is needed on the distribution and behavior of fin whales in the New York Bight to help inform how to protect this endangered species from the range of potential stressors and threats that occur year-round in these waters,” says co-author of the study. Mindi Rekdahl, associate marine conservation scientist at the Wildlife Conservation Society, said in the statement.

The study was published in the magazine Scientific reports.

By analyzing recordings of whale song made from January 2017 through December 2020, scientists were able to track the whales' seasonal shifts.

“The New York Bight buoys play a critical role in protecting wildlife, like the fin whale, in one of the busiest waterways in the world,” said co-author Mark Baumgartner, a marine ecologist at Woods Hole. “The data collected allows industry, government and the public to know when whales are nearby.”

Fin whale songs tend to be repetitive, so the main characteristic that changes in them is called the 'inter-note interval' (INI), the amount of time between notes.

The scientists found that in most years the INI was shortest from September to December, meaning the whales were often calling.

This makes sense since that is their mating season.

In the spring, from March to April, the INIs became longer.

“Since the songs followed predictable seasonal shifts from short INIs to long INIs and had a distinct INI pattern within each season, a single song pattern was present in the NYB during these years,” the researchers wrote.

In other words, whale songs followed a clear seasonal pattern each year.

Remarkably, this pattern was the same as previous researchers had tracked in the region a decade ago.

However, they discovered that one year did not follow the pattern: 2019.

This year there was no short INI period in autumn and winter.

This may reflect a year in which a shift in reproductive behavior occurred, the authors wrote.

'Instead, fin whales may have continued to forage mainly in the sea [New York Bight]while reproductive fin whales may have used another region for breeding activities,” they wrote.

DailyMail.com has created a map of the top 10 whale watching locations according to the Wildlife Conservation Society and the New York Aquarium.

You may be able to catch a glimpse of a fin whale from the shore, but the best way to spy these animals is by going out on a boat.

The list of locations was published in 2019 but is “still relevant today,” co-author Carissa King Nolan, assistant marine conservation scientist at the Wildlife Conservation Society, told DailyMail.com.

“From those locations, people would most likely see humpback or bottlenose dolphins,” she said. “Fin whales are generally found further from shore, so someone is less likely to see a fin whale in one of those places.”

However, it doesn't hurt to try.
