Fiona Phillips has revealed she believes her 11 years presenting breakfast television could be the reason why she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at such a young age.

The television presenter, who announced she had been diagnosed with the disease in July, presented ITV’s GMTV between 1997 and 2008, which meant getting up at around 3am on the days she presented the show.

The 62-year-old star, who worked with Eamonn Holmes on the show which started at 6am, said: ‘I ask myself why I got this terrible disease. I wonder if all those years of waking up so early while working on GMTV contributed to me developing Alzheimer’s so young.’

The star, who is married to This Morning editor Martin Frizell, was diagnosed with the disease in 2022.

She was put on a drug trial in an attempt to slow the symptoms, something she says seems to be working for her.

In an interview with Women&Home magazine, Fiona said: ‘I’m taking part in a clinical trial and the signs are positive.

‘I’m taking part in a revolutionary drug trial trying to find a cure. It involves a brand new drug and a placebo, and I have no idea which one I’m taking.

‘When I went for my six-month check-up in October, they did cognitive tests to see where my brain was at, which showed I was in the same place as the year before.

‘I am hopeful that the medicine will keep the disease there. I would rather not have to be on the test, but I am very grateful that I am.

‘There are risks, including bleeding in the brain, so I’m a guinea pig, but there is a real chance it could help.’

Fiona, who has two sons with Mark, stunned her millions of fans earlier this year when she revealed that, like both her parents, she had Alzheimer’s disease.

Still, the star says she ‘pretends’ she doesn’t have the disease so she can continue to enjoy her life.

She still meets friends for coffee and goes for walks, although she admits that Mark, her husband of 26 years, worries about her when he is at work.

‘I know I can still have a great life. I just get on with things. I pretend it didn’t happen and don’t give it any space in my life right now. Or as little as I can. I still have so much I want to do.

‘I know Martin is worried about what I’m doing when he’s at work or out in the evening, and whether I’m eating. But this isn’t me now. I have no intention of giving up. I still have so much to look forward to.’

Fiona, who left GMTV in December 2008 for family reasons, said that since her diagnosis she has become more vocal and ‘honest’ with people.

She added that no one reacted badly to her more candid comments.

“Martin says I have no filter now, and that’s true,” Fiona said.

‘I come out with funny things. I have become more honest with people, which I don’t see as a negative.

‘No one has reacted badly, and I usually end up complimenting people and saying things that I had thought but didn’t blurt out.

I think Martin gets a little annoyed sometimes, but all my friends are used to it now.

‘My diagnosis is certainly not all doom and gloom. There is still a lot of light in the darkness, and you should always look for it.’

Koningin Camilla zag er elegant uit in koningsblauw toen ze vandaag een receptie hield voor de Booker Prize Foundation in Clarence House.

Camilla, 76, droeg een Fiona Clare-jurk, die ze een aantal keren heeft gedragen, opnieuw tijdens het jaarlijkse evenement.

De koninklijke familie verhoogde haar ensemble met extravagante armbanden en halskettingen van Van Cleef & Arpels, evenals statement gouden oorbellen.

Camilla toonde een stralende make-uplook met perzikkleurige lippenstift, terwijl haar kenmerkende blonde lokken werden gestyled tot een glamoureuze bob.

De ingetogen jurk van Hare Majesteit werd speciaal voor haar gemaakt door de Britse couturier Fiona Clare. Het levendige ontwerp had een fit-and-flare-silhouet, met een ingesneden halslijn, vormgevende figuurnaden en een verfijnde midi-lengte.

De koningin verklaarde zichzelf ‘erg jaloers’ op de aanstaande Booker Prize-winnares toen haar de trofee werd overhandigd voor ‘bewaring’.

Tijdens een receptie vandaag in Clarence House voor auteurs die op de shortlist stonden voor de prijs van 2023, maar ook voor gasten en voormalige winnaars, nam Camilla ‘The Iris’ in ontvangst en bedankte hen voor het verrijken van de levens van mensen.

‘Ik wou dat dit mij werd gegeven. Ik ben erg jaloers op de persoon die hem zondag gaat ophalen en wens je veel succes’, zei ze.

In een spontane toespraak voegde ze eraan toe: ‘Ik wilde alle schrijvers bedanken die ons leven verbeteren. We zouden niet zonder jullie allemaal kunnen.

‘Zoals ik altijd heb gezegd: lezen is een escapisme. Wat er ook gebeurt in je leven en je vindt het moeilijk om ermee om te gaan, je kunt een boek pakken en gewoon naar een andere wereld gaan.

‘Als jullie er niet waren geweest, en al de mensen, de uitgevers en de agenten die je helpen je boeken op de kaart te zetten, zou het een heel trieste wereld zijn. Dus hartelijk dank allemaal.’

De Booker Prize, die voor het eerst werd uitgereikt in 1969, is ‘s werelds belangrijkste onderscheiding voor het beste aanhoudende fictiewerk, geschreven in het Engels door auteurs van overal ter wereld en gepubliceerd in Groot-Brittannië en Ierland.

De winnaar van dit jaar wordt zondagavond in Londen bekend gemaakt uit een shortlist van zes.

De titels en auteurs op de shortlist zijn: Sarah Bernstein voor Study for Obedience; Jonathan Escoffery voor Als ik jou overleef; Paul Lynch voor Prophet Song; Paul Harding voor Het andere Eden; Chetna Maroo voor Western Lane; en Paul Murray voor The Bee Sting.

Gast en voormalig Booker Prize-winnares Dame Penelope Lively zei dat het ‘geweldig’ was dat de koningin zo’n kampioen was op het gebied van alfabetisering.

Camilla is een groot voorstander van geletterdheid in Groot-Brittannië en internationaal sinds ze lid werd van de koninklijke familie en zelfs haar eigen online ‘Reading Room’ opzette, die inmiddels meer dan 160.000 volgers heeft aangetrokken.

Edugyan wordt vergezeld door acteur, schrijver en regisseur Adjoa Andoh, dichter, docent, redacteur en criticus Mary Jean Chan, hoogleraar Engelse en vergelijkende literatuurwetenschap aan Columbia University en Shakespeare-specialist James Shapiro, en acteur en schrijver Robert Webb.

De juryleden zijn op zoek naar het beste lange fictiewerk, geselecteerd uit inzendingen die tussen 1 oktober 2022 en 30 september 2023 in Groot-Brittannië en Ierland zijn gepubliceerd.

De winnaar ontvangt £50.000, terwijl de zes auteurs op de shortlist elk £2.500 ontvangen.

De koningin reikte de prijs in 2022 uit aan de Sri Lankaanse schrijver Shehan Karunatilaka voor The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida.

De winnaar van dit jaar wordt op 26 november 2023 bekendgemaakt in Old Billingsgate, Londen.

De robijn- en diamanten tiara van de overleden monarch werd in de jaren zeventig gemaakt van edelstenen die afkomstig waren van de tiara van Nizam uit Hyderabad, die haar als huwelijksgeschenk werd gegeven.

Britain’s loneliest sheep has been given a new home at a ‘five-star’ animal shelter, despite attempts by animal rights campaigners to prevent her arrival.

The ewe, named Fiona, was sneaked past protestors carrying banners into Dalscone Family Farm in Dumfries at night by owner Ben Best.

This morning Mr Best proudly broadcast images of the sheep, believed to be three years old, happily eating hay in her own pen in a barn, surrounded by curious stablemates.

Speaking on a Facebook Live at 9am this morning, Farmer Ben said: ‘Fiona is here. We had to sneak her into the farm yesterday to get past the protesters.

‘But as you can see, she is very happy. She’s in her own cage. She is safe and dry and completely relaxed.’

Yesterday, Mr Ben had announced that plans to house Fiona in the attraction had been shelved following threats from protesters who did not want the ewe to be displayed in a ‘petting zoo’.

Drones were flown over the farm in south-west Scotland and protesters descended on his family home waving banners, he claimed.

But the farmer claims Fiona will have five months to ‘settle in’ and ‘make friends’ before Dalscone Family Farm reopens to the public in the summer.

The sheep was rescued from a remote island in the Cromarty Firth, north of Inverness, where she is believed to have been trapped for two years after falling from a steep cliff.

She had protected herself from the North Sea storms in a cave and her fur had grown out of control.

But she was rescued this weekend by a bunch of young Scottish farmers who clambered off the cliff and used 200 meters of rope and a manger to make a makeshift swing to carry the sheep to safety.

Farmer Ben added: “Fiona has arrived in her new forever home. And I’m happy to announce that she is doing absolutely phenomenally.

“She’s been eating well, she’s been drinking well and she’s doing great.”

Fiona was first spotted by kayaker Jillian Turner in 2021, who returned to the same spot this year and found the ewe still there.

She said she was amazed that Fiona had ‘made it through all the elements’ and was ‘desperate to connect with us’ when she passed away. Her fur had grown so long that it could barely stand up.

Fiona’s rescue was led by Ayrshire farmer Cammy Wilson, who was moved by photos of the sheep abandoned by the sea.

Mrs Turner, from Brora, Sutherland, said last week she believed the sheep would manage to climb the rocky cliff.

But when she returned to the remote area last month, she was shocked to see Fiona still trapped. After taking photos to raise awareness of the plight, she called for help.

Mr Wilson and his team – Graeme Parker, James Parker, Als Couzens and Ally Williamson – responded and despite the dangerous terrain they were determined to free the sheep.

During the operation, two of the men remained at the top to operate the winch, while three others were lowered 250 meters into the steep descent, where they found Fiona in a cave.

They then secured Fiona in a large feed bag made into a makeshift sling and led her on an extremely dangerous climb up the cliff.

When they reached the top, Fiona was placed in a farm pickup truck and taken to safety, apparently in no worse health.

The rescue crew decided to name the sheep after a character from the animated film Shrek who marries a princess named Fiona.

Mr Wilson explained: ‘There was a sheep called Shrek in Australia who lived in caves for years, so this is the Scottish version.’

How Fiona ended up on the beach is a mystery, as local farmers do not own sheep of the same breed.

One farmer was able to provide crucial drone footage of the cliffs so the men could plan their rescue.

Fiona also played her part in the rescue. Mr Wilson explained: ‘She was so cold, it was unbelievable.

‘I was amazed at how relaxed this sheep was; no panting or panic. It was almost as if she was thinking, “Get me out of here.” It’s rare for a sheep to behave like this.’

He described the most nerve-wracking part as a nearly vertical 50-foot section where they feared the bag containing Fiona would tear.

Mr Wilson said: ‘If we lost the bag we were stuck in one spot. We would have spent most of the day there trying to figure out another plan. Luckily it held up and we helped her get over the worst of it. Then it was a steady climb, while you had to be careful.

‘In retrospect, luck was the most important factor of the day. It was great to come out with no mistakes and see the sheep happy and healthy… because the stress could have killed her. Luckily she was completely relaxed.’

The team had contacted the Scottish SPCA to monitor the rescue and check the sheep’s condition.

Fiona has now been transported to her new home about 270 miles south at Dalscone Farm animal park in Dumfries.

Susanna Reid addressed Fiona Phillip’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis as she led the messages of support to the former GMTV host on Wednesday morning.

On Tuesday, Fiona revealed that she and her husband were left in ‘total shock’ when the doctors diagnosed her with Alzheimer’s after having feared her brain fog symptoms were a sign of menopause.

Following the news, Susanna said while live on Good Morning Britain: ‘We are all sending our huge best wishes this morning to Fiona Phillips, well known to all of you as the former presenter of GMTV, for more than a decade.

‘She is a hugely popular presenter and journalist, we all know and love her, she has also been an incredible advocate to family’s living with Alzheimer’s.

‘Her mother was diagnosed in her 50s, or the symptoms were certainly picked up, her father then in his 60s and her uncle as well.

‘And now Fiona herself has been diagnosed, it’s called young-onset Alzheimer’s. She was diagnosed at the age of 61.’

Meanwhile, her co-host Ed Balls said Fiona was an ‘iconic broadcaster’ and recalled how former PM Gordon Brown had once begged her to ditch her TV career so that she could join the government.  

Ed said that Mr Brown had believed Fiona would make a ‘brilliant’ public health minister if she were to pursue the career change. 

However, he said: ‘I think we decided that broadcasting was her priority. So fair enough to her for deciding that – she would have been brilliant.’

He continued: ‘I would guess that Fiona has been thinking about this for a long time and now it’s a reality that she’s been dealing with and so bravely. 

‘She’s involved in a big trial to try and test out drugs which might make a difference and she wants to pioneer, she wants to talk about it. 

‘She wants to help other people deal with this but she’ll be doing all of that, helping other people as she’s always done while also having to deal with it which is so tough.’

Susanna concluded: ‘We wish Fiona all our best, we send her all our love.’

On Twitter, Lorraine Kelly and Piers Morgan were among the celebrities paying tribute to Fiona following her announcement about the diagnosis.

Lorraine said: ‘As expected our much loved Fiona is dealing with this shattering diagnosis with courage and optimism. She’s a good kind soul and I pray the treatment works and results in a massive breakthrough for everyone dealing with this hellish disease. Sending her and her family all my love.’

Alongside her post, Fiona shared a video of Fiona discussing her diagnosis as she insisted she wasn’t putting her life on hold for the disease.

She said: I’ve been trying not to think about it really. I’ve just been carrying on. That’s all you can do really.’

Fiona is currently involved in a clinical trial for the condition, as she told how her husband, This Morning boss Martin Frizell, has been injecting her daily.

Speaking of her husband’s support, she said: ‘He’s been brilliant.’

And sharing more detail about the drugs in the clinical trial, she said: ‘They’re brand new and they’re expecting a lot from them. So am I.’

Fiona’s mother, father and uncle have all heartbreaking also been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in the past. 

She said: The [impact] on my family. It’s absolutely decimated my mum, my dad and my uncle Barry. It just goes on and on.  They always used to say to me it’s not hereditary, well there’s something going on.’

Discussing how she is dealing with the condition, she said: ‘I’m just getting on with it, I’m not taking any notice of it. I’m not not doing anything, I’m just doing what I normally do. 

‘I don’t want to not work, I don’t want to be sitting around. I just like doing things.’

Sharing his support to the star, Piers said: ‘What incredibly sad news, but how typically honest & courageous of Fiona to speak out about it. Lovely lady, wish her and her family all the best as they battle this horrible disease.’ 

Many fans online spoke about how Fiona comes across as a ‘lovely woman’, as they shared their sadness over her health news. 

Some who are also battling Alzheimer’s, or care for a relative who has the condition, shared their love and support to the star.  

Fiona told how she originally saw the onset of ‘crippling anxiety’, ‘confusion’ and ‘brain fog’ at the end of 2021, she has revealed. Due to the nature of her symptoms, she saw a menopause specialist and underwent hormone replacement therapy.

Some of her symptoms improved, but the brain fog remained. She was examined by other specialists, spent months completing cognitive tests and ultimately received her dreaded diagnosis last year which was confirmed by a spinal tap test.

‘It was the shock.. Total shock,’ she said of the moment she and her husband, TV’s This Morning editor Martin Frizell, were told of the diagnosis.

‘I just felt sick. We both sat in silence. There was no funny line to make this go away,’ Martin, 64, recalled. ‘The doctor said he’d leave us in the room alone for a bit to digest it all. We just looked at each other and said: ‘S**t. What are we going to do?’

The couple then went for a drink at a nearby bar, where they are now regulars, and were faced with the task of ‘trying to live our life as normal for now’. It is understood that Fiona is undergoing a potentially revolutionary trial with a new drug which is hoped will slow or even reverse the illness for millions of people.

She is currently being supported by Martin, whom she married in 1997. They are parents to Nat, 24, and Mackenzie, 21. Until now, the couple had not told their children directly that their mother has Alzheimer’s.

Fiona told The Mirror last night that she had received the news of the devastating dementia disease, which killed both her parents, around a year ago, having suffered from months of brain fog and anxiety.

She said the diagnosis was ‘heartbreaking’, continuing: ‘It’s a b****y horrible’ secret to share. 

Martin added: ‘Tragically Fiona’s family has been riddled with it [Alzheimer’s].’

The journalist has described her agony from being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s after she last night revealed her battle against the disease which ravaged her family, vowing to fight on.

‘It’s something I might have thought I’d get at 80’, the 62-year-old said. ‘But I was still only 61 years old.

‘I felt more angry than anything else because this disease has already impacted my life in so many ways; my poor mum was crippled with it, then my dad, my grandparents, my uncle. It just keeps coming back for us.’

The former breakfast TV host insisted she is ‘still here’, adding: ‘This disease has ravaged my family and now it has come for me. And all over the country there are people of all different ages whose lives are being affected by it – it’s heartbreaking.

‘I just hope I can help find a cure which might make things better for others in the future.’

She is now taking part in a drug trial, Miridesap, at University College Hospital in London – but with half the participants receiving a placebo, it is impossible to know whether she is actually being given the drug.

Her husband said he believes her condition is ‘stabilising’, but admitted this could be ‘wishful thinking’. 

Elsewhere, the family is trying to keep things as normal as possible. But the changes Fiona is experiencing have led to significant shifts in some ways.

She said she would no longer use transport such as the Tube as it would cause her too much anxiety. She is unable to drive and also has short memory lapses.

Fiona has previously spoken about the deaths of both her parents from Alzheimer’s.

Her father Neville died in February 2012, while her mother Amy passed away with the disease in May 2006.

Fiona has frequently spoken out about the disease and campaigned for Alzheimer’s Research UK.

Speaking on This Morning in 2016, she told how her mother began developing early onset symptoms as young as 53, before eventually dying at the age of 74.

Her father developed symptoms in his 60s and moved into a ‘warden-assisted’ flat, before being transferred to a psychiatric hospital shortly before his death at 76. 

Speaking of the moment she started to realise her mother had the condition, she said: ‘I noticed mum’s Alzheimer’s at Christmas. She was really cold, there was no food in the house, she’d have the Christmas tree up in November so it was very unusual.’

As her father realised what was happening, she discussed his devastation: ‘Dad was beside himself and little did we know he had it too. Bizarre presents, my brother had an orange ladies jumper.’

When his father was diagnosed six years later, it was after he was arrested by the police for driving ‘erratically’.

She described the impact on the family: ‘You can’t do enough, I love my brother but resentment comes in, families are blown apart by it… It can happen to anyone – my mum was only in her 50s.’

Fiona has also previously talked about her fears that she, too, would develop Alzheimer’s.

She told The Mirror: ‘I need to sort out an action plan that can be used if I ‘disappear’… Of course I fear inheriting the disease with my family history, and I sometimes wake up in the night feeling anxious and worried about it. 

‘My parents were relatively young when they got it; my mum was in her early 50s, although at the time, we just put it down to her being eccentric.’

She also spoke of her parents decline, saying: ‘It was heartbreaking. The end is slow and undignified.’

And in 2019, she wrote a candid column in the same newspaper in which she discussed her feelings of guilt and sadness.

She wrote: ‘I feel I never did enough for my mum and dad. I couldn’t.’

She added: ‘You can never do enough for a loved one with dementia. It’s a cruel disease with no cure, and days have no end. 

‘I will never feel I did enough. That’s why I often tear up when people tell me how lucky my parents were to have me. The guilt never goes away.’

Fiona began her journalistic career working as a reporter for local radio stations such as Radio Mercury un Sussex and County Sound in Surrey.

Her big break came when she moved to GMTV as an entertainment correspondent in 1993, before being promoted to be their LA correspondent in December the same year.

She then fronted the breakfast show from 1997 to 2008, being the main anchor every Monday to Wednesday.

Fiona announced in 2008 she would be leaving the show for family reasons, presenting her last show in December. 

This followed the death of her mother, and came after her father had also been diagnosed with the disease. 

After her father’s death, the journalist revealed she was left ‘angry’ at his care, and even referred to it as ‘manslaughter’. 

His rapid deterioration led her to question whether the drugs cost him years of his life.

She said: ‘I am so angry at the way my lovely, lovely dad was treated at the end. In his final weeks he was so coshed by drugs that his poor body couldn’t cope.

‘They robbed him of his laughter, then his smile, which was all that he had got left, and I am absolutely furious about that. Then they robbed him of his life.

‘Maybe I’m being selfish because he wouldn’t have wanted to continue to be dependent on others. 

‘But that wasn’t a decision to be made by the medical system on his behalf … Without those drugs he could still have been healthy and happy, even with dementia.’ 

Treatment for dementia and Alzheimer’s has improved in recent years, and Ms Phillips hopes that the trial she is partaking in will help those who are diagnosed in the years to come. 

Despite saying goodbye to her regular slot on GMTV in 2008, Fiona has frequently appeared on the network since, most famously when guest presenting Lorraine.

She has also appeared on Loose Women and reports for the BBC’s Watchdog.

She has been writing a regular column for the Daily Mirror for 20 years, and has previously discussed her family’s history of the disease in the paper. 

Her fans also know her for appearing on Strictly Come Dancing in 2005.

Fiona has been a long-standing supporter of charity Alzheimer’s Research UK. In 2013 she attended ICAP Charity Day with the charity, joining brokers on the trading floor to raise funds for vital dementia research. 

In 2016, she appeared on This Morning in support of the charity, and in 2018 she spoke candidly about her family experience of dementia at the charity’s House of Lords reception celebrating the 20th anniversary of the first grant given by Alzheimer’s Research UK.

Journaliste en omroeper Fiona Phillips heeft aangekondigd dat ze lijdt aan de ziekte van Alzheimer op slechts 62-jarige leeftijd, zoals ze de wereld vertelde: ‘Het verwoestte mijn familie, nu is het voor mij gekomen’.

De verwoestende dementieziekte doodde haar beide ouders, en de schrijver heeft nu onthuld dat ook zij de ‘hartverscheurende’ diagnose heeft gekregen.

Mevrouw Phillips vertelde de Mirror dat ze het nieuws ongeveer een jaar geleden had ontvangen, na maandenlang last te hebben gehad van hersenmist en angst.

De voormalige ontbijt-tv-presentator zei: ‘Deze ziekte heeft mijn familie geteisterd en nu is het voor mij gekomen. En door het hele land zijn er mensen van alle verschillende leeftijden wier leven erdoor wordt beïnvloed – het is hartverscheurend.

‘Ik hoop alleen dat ik kan helpen een remedie te vinden die de dingen in de toekomst misschien beter maakt voor anderen.’

Het is duidelijk dat ze een potentieel revolutionaire proef ondergaat met een nieuw medicijn waarvan wordt gehoopt dat het de ziekte voor miljoenen mensen zal vertragen of zelfs omkeren.

De voormalige GMTV-host vertelde de Mirror, waarvoor ze regelmatig een column schrijft, dat ze niet had gedroomd dat ze de ziekte zou ervaren tot ze veel ouder was.

‘Het is iets waarvan ik dacht dat ik het op mijn tachtigste zou halen’, zegt ze. ‘Maar ik was nog maar 61 jaar oud.

‘Ik voelde me bozer dan iets anders omdat deze ziekte mijn leven al op zoveel manieren heeft beïnvloed; mijn arme moeder was er kreupel door, daarna mijn vader, mijn grootouders, mijn oom. Het blijft maar terugkomen voor ons.’

Ze voegde eraan toe dat het een ‘verschrikkelijk vreselijk’ geheim was om te delen.

Ze wordt momenteel ondersteund door haar man, TV’s This Morning-redacteur Martin Frizell, 64, met wie ze in 1997 trouwde. Hij zei: ‘Tragisch genoeg is Fiona’s familie ermee doorzeefd [Alzheimer’s].’

Ze zijn de ouders van Nat, 24, en Mackenzie, 21.

Het paar legde uit hoe mevrouw Phillips aanvankelijk het begin van ernstige angst zag, waarvan ze dacht dat het verband hield met de menopauze.

Maar nadat symptomen zoals hersenmist aanhielden ondanks het gebruik van HRT, ging ze voor verder onderzoek dat uiteindelijk eindigde in de diagnose Alzheimer.

Mevrouw Phillips beschreef het moment waarop ze de diagnose kreeg en zei dat het een ‘totale schok’ was, terwijl meneer Frizell zei dat hij ‘zich ziek voelde’. Het stel ging wat drinken in een nabijgelegen bar, waar ze nu stamgasten zijn.

Ze neemt nu deel aan een medicijnonderzoek, Miridesap, in het University College Hospital in Londen – maar aangezien de helft van de deelnemers een placebo krijgt, is het onmogelijk om te weten of ze het medicijn daadwerkelijk krijgt.

Haar man zei dat hij gelooft dat haar toestand ‘stabiliseert’, maar gaf toe dat dit ‘wishful thinking’ zou kunnen zijn.

Mevrouw Phillips heeft eerder gesproken over de dood van haar beide ouders aan de ziekte van Alzheimer.

Haar vader Neville stierf in februari 2012, terwijl haar moeder Amy in mei 2006 aan de ziekte stierf.

Mevrouw Phillips heeft zich vaak over de ziekte uitgesproken en campagne gevoerd voor Alzheimer’s Research UK.

Tijdens This Morning in 2016 vertelde ze hoe haar moeder op 53-jarige leeftijd vroege symptomen begon te krijgen, voordat ze uiteindelijk stierf op 74-jarige leeftijd.

Haar vader ontwikkelde symptomen toen hij in de zestig was en verhuisde naar een ‘bewaker-ondersteunde’ flat, voordat hij kort voor zijn dood op 76-jarige leeftijd werd overgebracht naar een psychiatrisch ziekenhuis.

Sprekend over het moment dat ze begon te beseffen dat haar moeder de aandoening had, zei ze: ‘Ik merkte dat mijn moeder alzheimer had met Kerstmis. Ze had het erg koud, er was geen eten in huis, ze zou de kerstboom in november hebben staan, dus dat was heel ongebruikelijk.’

Toen haar vader besefte wat er aan de hand was, besprak ze zijn verwoesting: ‘Papa was buiten zichzelf en we wisten niet dat hij het ook had. Bizarre cadeaus, mijn broer had een oranje damestrui.’

Toen zijn vader zes jaar later werd gediagnosticeerd, was dat nadat hij door de politie was opgepakt wegens ‘onregelmatig’ rijden.

Ze beschreef de impact op het gezin: ‘Je kunt niet genoeg doen, ik hou van mijn broer, maar er komt wrok binnen, gezinnen worden erdoor uit elkaar geblazen… Het kan iedereen overkomen – mijn moeder was pas in de vijftig.’

Mevrouw Phillips heeft eerder ook gesproken over haar angst dat ook zij de ziekte van Alzheimer zou krijgen.

Ze vertelde The Mirror: ‘Ik moet een actieplan uitwerken dat kan worden gebruikt als ik’ verdwijn ‘… Natuurlijk ben ik bang om de ziekte te erven met mijn familiegeschiedenis, en soms word ik ‘s nachts wakker met een angstig en bezorgd gevoel. over het.

‘Mijn ouders waren relatief jong toen ze het kregen; mijn moeder was begin vijftig, hoewel we het destijds gewoon toeschreven aan haar excentrieke karakter.’

Fiona sprak eerder over de achteruitgang van haar ouders en zei: ‘Het was hartverscheurend. Het einde is traag en onwaardig.’

En in 2019 schreef ze een openhartige column in dezelfde krant waarin ze haar schuldgevoelens en verdriet besprak.

Ze schreef: ‘Ik heb het gevoel dat ik nooit genoeg heb gedaan voor mijn vader en moeder. Ik kon het niet.’

Ze voegde eraan toe: ‘Je kunt nooit genoeg doen voor een dierbare met dementie. Het is een wrede ziekte zonder genezing, en de dagen hebben geen einde.

‘Ik zal nooit het gevoel hebben dat ik genoeg heb gedaan. Daarom barst ik vaak in tranen uit als mensen me vertellen hoeveel geluk mijn ouders hadden met mij. Het schuldgevoel gaat nooit weg.’

Mevrouw Phillips begon haar journalistieke carrière als verslaggever voor lokale radiostations zoals Radio Mercury un Sussex en County Sound in Surrey.

Haar grote doorbraak kwam toen ze in 1993 naar GMTV verhuisde als entertainmentcorrespondent, voordat ze in december van hetzelfde jaar werd gepromoveerd tot hun LA-correspondent.

Vervolgens leidde ze van 1997 tot 2008 de ontbijtshow en was ze elke maandag tot en met woensdag het belangrijkste anker.

Mevrouw Phillips kondigde in 2008 aan dat ze de show om familiale redenen zou verlaten en presenteerde haar laatste show in december.

Dit volgde op de dood van haar moeder en kwam nadat ook bij haar vader de ziekte was vastgesteld.

Na de dood van haar vader, de journalist onthulde dat ze ‘boos’ was achtergelaten door zijn zorgen noemde het zelfs ‘doodslag’.

Zijn snelle achteruitgang bracht haar ertoe zich af te vragen of de drugs hem jaren van zijn leven hebben gekost.

Ze zei: ‘Ik ben zo boos over de manier waarop mijn lieve, lieve vader uiteindelijk werd behandeld. In zijn laatste weken was hij zo gekweld door drugs dat zijn arme lichaam het niet aankon.

‘Ze beroofden hem van zijn lach, daarna van zijn glimlach, dat was alles wat hij nog had, en daar ben ik absoluut woedend over. Daarna beroofden ze hem van zijn leven.

‘Misschien ben ik egoïstisch omdat hij niet afhankelijk van anderen zou willen blijven.

‘Maar dat was geen beslissing die namens hem door het medische systeem moest worden genomen… Zonder die medicijnen had hij nog steeds gezond en gelukkig kunnen zijn, zelfs met dementie.’

De behandeling van dementie en de ziekte van Alzheimer is de afgelopen jaren verbeterd en mevrouw Phillips hoopt dat de proef waaraan ze deelneemt, diegenen zal helpen die in de komende jaren worden gediagnosticeerd.

Ondanks het afscheid nemen van haar reguliere slot op GMTV in 2008, is mevrouw Phillips sindsdien regelmatig op het netwerk verschenen, het meest bekend toen ze Lorraine presenteerde.

Ze is ook verschenen op Loose Women en rapporten voor de BBC’s Watchdog.

Ze schrijft al 20 jaar regelmatig een column voor de Daily Mirror en heeft eerder de ziektegeschiedenis van haar familie in de krant besproken.

Haar fans kennen haar ook omdat ze in 2005 op Strictly Come Dancing verscheen.
