NICHOLAS JACKSON has as many bookings as goals in the Premier League and at first glance looks like a bust.

But SunSport can reveal there is a secret softer side to the 22-year-old Chelsea forward, one that is in stark contrast to his public image.

Senegalese Jackson didn’t own a pair of football boots until he was 16, while growing up in the poor town of Ziguinchor.

It’s something he never forgot and was the inspiration behind a personal relief mission to help the children of his old hometown.

While playing for former clubs Villarreal and Mirandes in Spain, the kind-hearted Jackson saved his teammates’ spare kits throughout the season.

Old boots, shirts, socks, shin guards. You name it, he took it all home and packed it up.

At the end of the season, Jackson stacked the ticket into a dozen large boxes and brought it all back to Ziguinchor – to give away to local children.

Chelsea’s enigmatic striker paid the excess baggage charges out of his own pocket, which cost more than four times the price of his plane ticket.

Despite playing in LaLiga, Jackson did not earn relatively much money at Villarreal. Even less at second division team Mirandes.

But it didn’t stop him from digging deep to help the kids at home.

The £30million star has had a turbulent debut season in the Premier League.

But after a difficult start, which saw him rack up five bookings and a suspension before the end of September, he is now settling down.

Can Jose Mourinho return to Chelsea?

He has already scored nine top-flight goals – one fewer than the total scored by Didier Drogba in his debut season at Stamford Bridge before becoming a Chelsea legend.

And boss Mauricio Pochettino said: “You can all see now how he is improving. The hardest part was supporting him when things were tough.

“He has the quality and the capacity. Now he is doing much better, but he still has a lot to improve. The numbers are comparable to Drogba’s in his first season.

“That might give the fans more belief in him and make them a little more patient with him, but as always it depends on the circumstances.

“He was the only striker and we demanded too much in every match and in every action: ‘Score, score, score!’ It is not easy.

“Now I hope people start to understand that he has the condition to be very good.”

You all see now how he is improving. The hardest part was supporting him when things were tough.

Jackson admits that adapting to English has been a challenge and could be indicative of the short temper he’s working on.

But being willing to fight for your team isn’t always a bad thing.

He also employs subtle changes in his routine to achieve marginal gains.

Sleeping at least eight hours every night, adjusting his diet with the help of Chelsea’s expert nutritionists, and eating precise portions of vegetables, carbs and protein to get the most out of his body.

Poch added: “A player arrived here who needed support, needed help, had to perform, but over time had to adapt to the club.”

Chelsea welcome Ben Chilwell, 27, back to the squad for tomorrow’s FA Cup quarter-final against his former club Leicester.

The defender missed Monday’s 3-2 win over Newcastle with an injury.

The head of Brazil’s state oil company looked out at the cluttered landscape of Rio de Janeiro through his office window. Looking back, he saw, on the other side of the city’s dilapidated apartment buildings, the looming statue of Christ the Redeemer. Hawks circled an overflowing garbage dump. Plumes of smoke rose from a fire in a hillside slum.

His company, Petrobras, plans such a rapid increase in oil production that it could become the world’s third-largest producer by 2030, a transformation he believes could play a role in reducing the poverty he sees lies on. This, even as his country positions itself as a leader in the fight against climate change, which is of course primarily driven by the burning of oil and other fossil fuels.

Petrobras pumps about as much crude oil annually as ExxonMobil, according to market research firm Rystad Energy. Oil is expected to surge past the national oil companies of China, Russia and Kuwait in the coming years, leaving only Saudi Arabia and Iran to surpass Petrobras by 2030.

It’s a huge predicament for Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, better known as Lula, who has molded himself into the pre-eminent global leader on climate issues. By all accounts, Mr. Lula has come to believe in recent years that climate change is a major cause of poverty and inequality, which he has vowed to eradicate in his decades-long political career.

Since his election in 2022, Mr. Lula has dramatically reduced deforestation in the Amazon and overseen a significant build-out of renewable energy. But he will also preside over Petrobras’ oil boom and a period of growing gas imports, both of which will facilitate Brazil’s growing appetite for cheap flights, meatier diets and air-conditioned homes.

As counterintuitive as that may seem, it’s only fair, said Petrobras CEO Jean Paul Prates, high up in his company’s gleaming headquarters.

“We will not give up that privilege,” he said, “because others do not also make their own sacrifices.”

It’s an argument that’s hampering global efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Industrialized countries such as the United States, which have become economic superpowers by emitting enormous amounts of greenhouse gases, are still the world’s largest producers and consumers of fossil fuels per capita.

And if they don’t want to stop, why would Brazil?

Lula’s chief adviser on climate change, Ana Toni, a longtime director of several nonprofits, said Petrobras would ideally cut oil production and invest more heavily in renewables, essentially transforming itself into a new kind of company. But she echoed Mr Prates, saying developing countries would hesitate to make their own sacrifices until the whole world stood together, with the richest leading the way.

Like many in Brazil, Ms. Toni pointed to the cautionary example of neighboring Colombia, whose president laid out an ambitious plan, the first for any oil-producing country, to phase out fossil fuel production.

“Colombia’s courageous decision is being interpreted by the market as creating economic uncertainty. It really is the worst-case scenario,” she said. “I wish countries richer than ours would have a real conversation about taking such steps, and not leave it to us vulnerable ones.”

That tension has dominated years of climate negotiations and will take center stage again this year at the United Nations-sponsored summit to be held in Azerbaijan in November. There, negotiators from almost every country in the world hope to tackle the thorny issue of how richer countries can funnel more money to poorer countries to help them adopt cleaner energy sources and adapt to the effects of climate change.

After Azerbaijan, Brazil itself will be the next host of the UN climate summit. The summit will take place in Belém, a city on the edge of the Amazon, near a place where Petrobras had proposed to explore for oil. But in one of the few cases where the Brazilian government restricted the oil industry, this idea was blocked. Mr Prates said Petrobras was appealing the decision.

Meanwhile, Petrobras plans to spend more than $7 billion over the next five years exploring potential offshore drilling sites along other parts of Brazil’s coast to boost its already growing output.

Petrobras, like many other oil and gas companies, internally expects demand for its products to remain stubbornly high. Accordingly, the company is making a very different set of assumptions than those of the International Energy Agency and others who say oil demand has already peaked or is close to peaking.

That leaves countries like Brazil in a kind of do-it-all gray area, says Mercedes Bustamante, a professor and ecologist at the University of Brasilia, and a member of the Climate Crisis Advisory Group, an independent group of scientists.

Brazil grows both renewable energy sources and fossil fuels. This year it joined OPEC, the global oil cartel, as an observer, while next year it also plans to host the UN’s global climate negotiations. According to Rystad data, the country will become the world’s fifth largest oil producer by 2030.

This dynamic is also reflected in forests, Ms. Bustamante said. Land clearing in the Amazon has been restricted, but at the same time it is increasing in the Cerrado, a vast savannah that covers much of central Brazil.

“Working both ways is very much part of Brazil’s policy DNA,” says Oliver Stuenkel, professor at the Fundação Getulio Vargas School of International Relations in São Paulo. “We are becoming a green superpower, yes, but we are not going to take unnecessary risks. This means that we must prepare for a world in which oil will play an important role for a long time and the transition will take longer than expected.”

Mr. Prates said he spoke to Mr. Lula every two weeks and pushed him to understand that a transition away from fossil fuels must be “sensibly slow.”

“That doesn’t mean slow because we don’t want to make a transition, but slow because we have to meet the expectations of the market for oil, gas and its derivatives,” he said. “Petrobras will rise to the end of the last drop of oil, just as Saudi Arabia or the Emirates will do the same.”

Petrobras has some serious long-term upside, even if oil demand peaks. The cost of producing oil from Brazil’s offshore locations near Rio and São Paulo is roughly $35 per barrel, well below the international benchmark of $90. That’s partly because its production is less energy intensive, making it marginally cleaner and more desirable for some emissions-conscious buyers.

Lula’s government also faces a polarized electorate that, according to recent surveys, generally does not view climate change as a voting issue. “Half the population does not have access to treated sewage,” Mr. Stuenkel said. “Brazil has very different public demands than richer countries. There is still a long way to go to convince Brazilian voters that a painful reorganization of society is needed to avert climate change.”

Nevertheless, Mr. Lula is deeply concerned, said Ms. Toni, his climate adviser.

The world is looking to Brazil for leadership in this area, and the country has made ambitious pledges to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Those promises are more ambitious, she noted, than those of the United States or many other countries that have higher living standards than Brazil.

She believes it is a good sign that Brazil is under pressure to reconsider its oil expansion. To her, this means that they have been so successful at deforestation that people are holding them to a higher standard.

But it’s all in vain if the biggest players don’t match that ambition. “Even if Brazil stops oil production tomorrow,” she said. “The US, Russia and others will not stop.”

A father and mother in their 30s who already have a net worth of $2 million have told how they built a successful property portfolio in just 10 years.

Paramedic Leonard Price, 35, and his wife Larissa, 33, from Melbourne, bought their first plot of land in 2014 to build their dream home.

They decided to sell 10 months later because they felt it was ‘not a good fit’ and to their surprise they made a profit of $92,000.

‘I thought, “Holy s***, this is incredible!” All I did was put my name on a piece of land and pocket $92,000,” Price told FEMAIL.

Melbourne couple Leonard, 35, and Larissa Price, 33, have bought five properties in the past decade. They build new homes and then use the equity in the mortgage to finance the down payment on the next property

Since then, the couple has spent a decade strategically purchasing real estate with the help of a buyer’s agent, skyrocketing their wealth.

But there were rocky spots. The couple then bought a mansion – a move that Price admitted “wasn’t the best investment decision.”

Although the couple owned the property for five years, the value increased by only $70,000.

“This made me realize that the best real estate investment strategy is to buy assets that appreciate in value – that is, land, not apartments and townhouses,” he said.

With the help of their buyer’s agent, the couple continued their investment journey, utilizing a “rinse, repeat” cycle of targeting properties with large land parcels.

The couple have now purchased properties across Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and the Gold Coast.

All houses have four or five bedrooms, two bathrooms, a double garage and are brand new built.

“Real estate has helped us build wealth and grow our net worth much faster than we would have if we had just saved and put our money in a bank account,” Price said.

‘Many people fear debt, but debt can be big if you can use it to buy assets that rise quickly in value. Ownership is just that.

“You borrow some money (incur debt) to buy something that you don’t have the personal resources for at the time, but that you have every confidence will increase significantly in value over time.”

Property investment expert Michael Beresford told FEMAIL how 'lazy shares' can help pay off your mortgage in ten years – but you'll have to buy a second home (property in Clyde, Melbourne pictured)

‘Lazy equity is equity that is not being used. If you’ve owned your home for a few years and its value has increased or you’ve paid off debts, you now have untapped equity,” said Mr Beresford (photo Point Cook, Melbourne real estate ).

It’s called using “lazy equity.”

Michael Beresford, Executive Director of Investment for OpenCorp, said the couple had managed to achieve their empire by tapping into the shares locked up in their homes.

Mr Beresford, who has more than two decades of industry experience, told FEMAIL that ‘lazy shares’ could help Australians pay off their investments or build investment portfolios that could crush their mortgages within a decade.

“Lazy equity is equity that is not being utilized,” he said.

‘If you have owned your house for a few years and the value has risen or you have paid off debts, you now have surplus value that remains untapped.

‘If you don’t use this equity, it lies dormant and becomes ‘lazy equity’. (But) if you use this equity as a deposit and expense for an investment property, it can start to work for you.”

Mr. and Mrs. Price took this strategy and ran with it – and thankfully it paid off.

Good and bad tenants and one regret: the experience of Mr. and Mrs. Price

The couple earns a combined salary of $200,000, but if money is tight, Mr. Price can pick up some extra shifts at work if necessary.

To use the services of their buyer’s agent, the couple pays about $12,000 per home and doesn’t lift a finger, as the agent does “all the work.”

“I didn’t do anything, I’m just paying them compensation. I have never seen the properties or touched the keys, but the return on investment is tremendous,” Price said.

The couple’s net worth is calculated by subtracting their assets from their debts.

They have $4 million worth of properties, about $300,000 in cash, super and savings with $2.2 million in debt, giving them a net worth of $2 million.

HOW MUCH IS EACH PROPERTY WORTH?

Clyde, property in Melbourne – house where the family lives

  • House and land package purchased for $470,000
  • Current value: $750,000

Point Cook, investment property in Melbourne

  • House and land package purchased for $492,000
  • Current value: $750,000

Thornlands, Brisbane investment properties

  • House and land package purchased for $590,000
  • Current value: $830,000

Perth investment properties – under construction

  • House and land package purchased for $650,000
  • Current value: TBA

Gold Coast investment property – under construction

  • House and land package purchased for $950,000
  • Current value: TBA

Each week, the couple pays $100 per investment property: the difference between the mortgage payments and the rent received.

As a result, investments are ‘negative all year round’, but according to Mr Price there remains a ‘positive cash flow’ at the end of each financial year. Negative gearing occurs when the cost of owning a rental property exceeds the income it generates each year.

“As all our properties are new builds, costs are depreciated over time, with depreciation also being a tax deduction,” Mr Price said.

‘Although we “lose” a little from week to week during the year, we make a significant portion back during taxes. Yet the value of the properties continues to rise.’

The couple earns a combined salary of $200,000, but if money is tight, Mr. Price can pick up some extra shifts at work if necessary. Their only regret is that they didn't start sooner

The biggest blunder occurred when a tenant left the property in disarray, causing $8,000 in damage that the couple had to repair.

“The tenant fled and we had to rush to fix everything,” Mr Price said.

Mr Price’s only regret was not starting the process sooner.

‘As they say: it’s about time in the market, not timing the market. The longer you are in it, the better off you will be,” he said, adding: “There is a lot of fear that the real estate market will collapse, but personally I don’t believe that will happen.”

The couple is expecting their third child and likely won’t buy a new piece of land to build on for years to come, but will continue to use the equity from their mortgages to continue the cycle.

But does the attacker become involved in active play? Interfere with the defender? Make a move to play the ball?

Before Virgil van Dijk’s disallowed goal in the Carabao Cup final, Wataru Endo is in an offside position, but makes no move to play the ball.

So does he get involved in active play by blocking Levi Colwill?

Can Colwill challenge Van Dijk? I do not think so.

But look at Burnley v Luton, where the Luton striker clearly blocks the goalkeeper and that is allowed.

At Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup it was exactly the same as with Van Dijk.

Another defender stands between Felipe and Casemiro as he scores.

People will say that Rafael Varane was involved in active play in that position because the defenders knew he was there.

“One minute you think you’ve collared me and the next minute I’m gone and the ball is in the back of the net.

Michelle Heyman scored four first-half goals as Australia defeated Uzbekistan 10-0 on Wednesday to clinch their place in the women’s football tournament at the Paris Olympics.

After winning the first leg of the Olympic qualifier 3-0 on a freezing day in Tashkent, Australia were ruthless on a stifling evening at Melbourne’s Docklands Stadium, where Heyman’s catch thrilled a sell-out crowd of 54,120.

“It was very special,” said Matildas captain Steph Catley.

“Everything we set out to do, we did, so it’s a proud moment for us to get back to the Olympics.”

With Sam Kerr and Kyah Simon sidelined through injury, Heyman has made the most of her first international matches in six years, scoring in both legs against world number 47 Uzbeks.

In Docklands, the 35-year-old striker had a hat-trick after 16 minutes and scored her fourth in stoppage time before half-time.

Heyman was subbed off in the second half and was unable to add to her numbers, but may have already convinced coach Tony Gustavsson to include her in his squad for Paris.

Defender Kaitlyn Torpey also got on the scoresheet in the 22nd minute, along with Mary Fowler (36th) and Caitlin Foord (38th) as the Matildas stormed out to an 8-0 lead at half-time.

A bleak evening for football in Uzbekistan became even bleaker when goalkeeper Maftuna Jonimqulova was injured in a goal and was carried off the pitch on a stretcher shortly after the restart.

Australia’s scoring dried up in the second half after Gustavsson adjusted his formation, but substitute Amy Sayer completed the rout in stoppage time after Hayley Raso’s 68th-minute goal.

Women’s World Cup semi-finalists Australia, who qualified for their third consecutive Olympic Games, will bid for a first medal in Paris three years after reaching the semi-finals in Tokyo.

Japan defeated North Korea 2-1 in the other qualifier to book their ticket to Paris after the two sides drew 0-0 in their first leg.

Iheanacho puts it outside the Bournemouth box 22 yards from goal. A slight movement and he works it onto his left foot and curls a rocket past Travers into the top far corner.

Beauty. Can the Championship squad hold on!?

GOAL! Bournemouth 0-1 Leicester

Fatawu scores with the last kick of the first half after extra time.

What a screamer!!

Luton 2-6 Manchester City

Four substitutions in the 77th minute for Pep Guardiola and Erling Haaland is one of them.

What a night for him.

Target detail

81. Jamaal Lascelles makes a huge mistake by letting a long ball down the line beat him and let Blackburn in.

A cutback to Markanday 15 meters from goal sees him thunder a strike towards goal, which Dubravka excellently pushes onto the crossbar.

Szmodics reacts faster than the Newcastle defense, which has honestly been sleeping for weeks, and coolly puts a bet on an empty goal from eight meters.

Game on!

GOAL! Blackburn 1-1 Newcastle

Who else!? Sammie Szmodis for Blackburn gets Rovers level!

Luton 2-6 Manchester City

73. Rob Edwards has his head in his hands. At one point it looked like a potentially momentous evening for Luton.

Now that could happen, for the wrong reasons.

John Stones passes to Kovacic 25 yards from goal and the focus is on Haaland as he darts into the penalty area. So Kovacic curls an effort from 22 yards, which Krul should really do better with.

It’s not in the corner, but it flies past him and into the net. Six goals and fifteen minutes to go.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s framework released Friday for a post-war order in Gaza appeared to keep his government on a collision course with the United States and much of the rest of the world over the enclave’s future.

Here are some of the main points of friction between what the Israeli leader has proposed and what other governments have said they want after the war in Gaza is over:

The Biden administration and Arab states have called on both Gaza and the occupied West Bank to become part of a future Palestinian state alongside Israel, arguing that decades of Israeli-Palestinian conflict can only be resolved with an eventual two-state solution.

But Mr Netanyahu’s plans appear to rule out a sovereign Palestinian state in the near term, saying Israel would retain military control indefinitely over “all territory west of the Jordan”, including the enclave. It does not explicitly rule out a Palestinian state, but its wording would make an independent territory including Gaza and the Israeli-occupied West Bank virtually impossible in the near future.

Netanyahu’s framework calls for closing Gaza’s border with Egypt — the only border crossing in the territory not controlled by Israel — to prevent what the country describes as cross-border smuggling. It would be done in coordination with Egypt and with the support of the United States, his proposal said.

But it was not clear whether the Biden administration would support such a move. And it would likely increase tensions with Egypt: the government in Cairo has called Israeli threats to send troops to a so-called buffer zone separating Gaza from the Egyptian-controlled Sinai desert “a serious threat to Egyptian-Israeli relations.” .

The framework provides for a “security space” within Gaza along the border with Israel, to prevent another attack like the one on October 7, when Hamas-led attackers crossed the border and killed some 1,200 people in Israel, Israeli officials said. officials. . Israeli forces have been clean up the areademolishing dozens of homes and razing factories to the ground, sparking international condemnation.

A United Nations expert has said that the systematic demolition of Palestinian homes could be a war crime. The United States has rejected any permanent reduction in Gaza’s territory, although it has indicated it could support a temporary buffer zone, for example to allow displaced Israelis to return to border communities. Mr Netanyahu said the zone should remain in place “as long as the security need exists.”

The Biden administration has called for a “revitalized” Palestinian Authority – led by aging leader Mahmoud Abbas – to take control of Gaza after an Israeli withdrawal. The Palestinian body administers certain areas of the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Mr Netanyahu’s proposal would instead provide a solution civilian administrative control in Gaza will be transferred to “local stakeholders with administrative experience” who are “not affiliated with countries or entities that support terrorism.” That likely rules out Abbas’s government in its current form, which Netanyahu has previously criticized in identical terms.

IMAGINE scoring 289 goals in 40 league games – an average of 7.2 goals per game – and 340 in all competitions in just one season!

Incredibly, those were the astonishing goalscoring figures of former Manchester City frontman Paul Moulden when he played for the all-conquering Bolton Lads Club at the age of 14 in the 1981-82 season.

This feat earned him a place in the Guinness Book of Records.
They are the kind of goals that would even put current City striker Erling Haaland in the shade.

When Moulden joined 'his' club Manchester City in 1984, he played in the side that won the FA Youth Cup in 1986, scoring nine goals on the way to their success.

Now 56, he recalls: “Before I joined City, Blackburn, Bolton, Manchester United, Leeds, Everton and Arsenal were all desperate to sign me. It was very flattering.”

He was even invited to Old Trafford when Dave Sexton was manager and had Sir Matt Busby meet him to clearly impress and lure the teenager.

Molden said: “There was something about United that I didn't like. My father, an ex-pro, told me to only join a club where I felt comfortable.”

He opted for his boyhood club instead, saying: 'As soon as I walked into City I knew this was it.

“I had three heroes growing up: Bolton striker Neil Whatmore and City idols Peter Barnes and Trevor Francis.”

He made his first-team debut for the club on New Year's Day 1986 at the age of 18 under Billy McNeill. Moulden said: “You never forget your debut. It was great to get those first minutes. It was at Aston Villa, a fantastic ground.”

He only played one more league match as a substitute in the 1985-1986 season.
But the teenager began to impress in the following campaign, scoring four in four games and quickly earning the nickname from City fans. . . Golden fungus.

He said: “I was impressed when my hero Barnsey returned for a second spell at City, so I was able to play for the same side. He was still a great player in the latter stages of his career.”

Phil Foden brutally trolls Micah Richards on live TV during £600-a-week haircuts and reveals how much his trim costs

Moulden's best season was his last at Maine Road, when he scored seventeen goals in the 1988/89 season to help City win promotion back to the top flight, by which time he had fallen out with boss Mel Machin.

But even today he has no idea why Machin didn't like him.

He said: “For whatever reason I was in and out of the team which was mentally difficult for me.

“Then I was sold to Bournemouth in a deal that brought Ian Bishop to City.”

Unfortunately, what should have been a professional career shone in gold and goals were ruined by injuries, including FOUR broken legs and a broken back.

He played for eight clubs for twelve years, but was forced to retire in 1995 at the ridiculously young age of 29.

Moulden added: “It's a sad story about a whole series of injuries and misdiagnosis. The medical side of the game is chalk and cheese compared to when I played.

“I broke my leg three times FOR make my first-team debut.
“Of course I regret not being able to fulfill my potential. But looking back, I never rode long enough without injuries.

“I consider myself lucky to have had a football career at all. After I returned to Oldham from Bournemouth in 1990, the artificial pitch at Boundary Park caused huge problems for my ankle, so it was just another problem for me.

“After Oldham I played for five other clubs – including a spell in Norway for Molde – but I knew my time in the game would be short.

“It would be an excuse to say I was drinking and gambling, but that's just not the case. I just had a lot of bad luck.”

He continued to be involved in the game, coaching at City's academy and also making a few appearances for Accrington during their non-league days.

But he then opened his own fish and chip shop in Bolton, just a stone's throw from the Bolton Lads Club where his goal-blitz and football journey had begun.

He ran Paul's Chippy – a thriving business – for 23 years before selling the franchise two years ago.

He said: “I have loved every moment of the company. Unfortunately, I had a brain hemorrhage a few years ago. I'm happy to report that I'm doing well now, but it was important to take a step back from day-to-day involvement.”

HOW TO GET FREE BETTS ON FOOTBALL

Paul's youngest son Louie (below) played for City Under-18s and is now at Wolves, but is on loan at Northampton as a goalkeeper. He made his Cobblers league debut in their 1-1 home draw with Bolton last weekend and played in yesterday's 3-1 win against Bristol Rovers.

Moulden has two eldest sons: Joe is a coach at an American university and Ted is a kitman at Bolton.

And Paul said: “I'd like to think I've always been there for the boys.

“Louie is the last one still playing, but football has always been in the family blood and the gene has been passed on to the boys.”

Kick-off – Aston Villa v Man Utd

1. Here we go! Referee Rob Jones blows the whistle, and Manchester United – in white shirts and red shorts – helps us on our way.

Villas are traditional in their famous burgundy and blue.

Here come the two teams!

On either side of a replica of the European Cup, Aston Villa and Manchester United players make their way through the wide tunnel at Villa Park and onto the pitch.

As United's stars roar in encouragement, the players in claret and blue look unfazed and determined.

There is also some atmosphere in the stadium, above the noise of the flares and fireworks that greet the teams.

Can Villa extend their lead over United to 11 points? Or will the Red Devils continue to hold on to the Champions League dream?

This will be followed by kick-off in the West Midlands.

Ten Hag is busy catching up

Manchester United are just one place behind Aston Villa in the battle for Champions League football, but are a whopping eight points behind today's opponents.

Suffice it for Erik ten Hag to insist that this afternoon's match is a must-win for the Red Devils if they want to overtake their rivals and secure a place in the top four.

We have to catch up. We know what position we are in. We've gotten into it and now we have to go one step further. [Today is a must-win] and that should be the approach in every match, because we have to catch up.

Erik ten HagAir sports

Unai about the price

Unai Emery is in charge of his 100th Premier League match this afternoon and could set a new record in the process.

In his first game as Aston Villa boss, the Spaniard oversaw a 3-1 home win against Manchester United.

And he achieved something similar during his time at Arsenal, leading the Gunners to a 2-0 win against United in the Emirates in March 2019.

Another win today and Emery becomes the first manager to win the first three home games against the Red Devils in the Premier League.

The view from Villa Park

Graeme Bryce is our man in the press box this afternoon, and he's been in touch with his take on the team news…

“Erik ten Hag makes only one change from the team that defeated West Ham 3-0 last weekend.

“Raphael Varane replaces the injured Lisandro Martinez, who was left out against the Hammers with a knee injury.

Left back Luke Shaw celebrates his 250th Premier League appearance.

Villa boss Unai Emery also has an anniversary to celebrate as he takes charge of his 100th Premier League match.

“The Spaniard makes just one adjustment to the team that crashed out of the FA Cup after a 3-1 defeat to Chelsea, with Jacob Ramsey replacing Youri Tielemans.

“Meanwhile, Spanish defender Pau Torres remains on the bench as he recovers from a previous ankle injury.”

Red Devils definitely stay February

One of the most astonishing statistics to emerge in the build-up to this match is Manchester United's ability to pick up points in February.

In fact, the Red Devils are unbeaten in their last 24 Premier League matches taking place during the second month of the year (W15 D9) since losing 1-0 to Newcastle under Jose Mourinho in 2018.
