ONE thing is certain for this season: we have seen so many inconsistencies with VAR and it irritates the fans, players, managers – and even us referees.
In Article 11, being in an offside position is not in itself an offense.
But does the attacker become involved in active play? Interfere with the defender? Make a move to play the ball?
Before Virgil van Dijk’s disallowed goal in the Carabao Cup final, Wataru Endo is in an offside position, but makes no move to play the ball.
So does he get involved in active play by blocking Levi Colwill?
Can Colwill challenge Van Dijk? I do not think so.
But look at Burnley v Luton, where the Luton striker clearly blocks the goalkeeper and that is allowed.
At Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup it was exactly the same as with Van Dijk.
Another defender stands between Felipe and Casemiro as he scores.
People will say that Rafael Varane was involved in active play in that position because the defenders knew he was there.
