Gray whale, long absent from the Atlantic Ocean, spotted off the coast of Massachusetts

Researchers at the New England Aquarium were conducting regular surveys of the waters south of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket in Massachusetts last week when something caught their attention.

What they saw, a whale with no dorsal fin, led researchers to think it might be a North Atlantic right whale, a critically endangered species that the aquarium keeps a close eye on. But the whale’s skin was spotty, and if it was a whale, something would have been wrong.

“I had a bit of a strange feeling about it,” Orla O’Brien, a senior university researcher, said in an interview. “Something seemed wrong.”

So when the whale resurfaced and Ms. O’Brien and her observation partner, Kate Laemmle, a research technician, could see its distinctly shaped head and mottled gray-white skin, they couldn’t believe their eyes: Could it be a gray whale are? whale? In the Atlantic Ocean?

“It was really hard to understand it mentally,” Ms O’Brien said.

But it was a gray whale, an aquarium sighting described in a statement Tuesday as “an incredibly rare event.”

Gray whales are regularly found in the North Pacific Ocean, but sightings in the Atlantic Ocean, where the whales disappeared in the 18th century, are extremely rare. Experts say it’s not clear why they disappeared, but whaling may have been a factor.

According to the aquarium, five gray whales have been sighted in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea in the past 15 years. The most recent occurred off the coast of Florida in December, and the New England Aquarium believes the whale is the same gray whale that researchers spotted off Nantucket last week.

Scientists say climate change is largely responsible for the strange sightings. The Northwest Passage, which connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans between the Canadian mainland and the North Pole, has been ice-free during the summer months in recent years, partly due to rising global temperatures. Without ice, gray whales could swim through the passage, something that would not have been possible in the last century, the aquarium said.

The whale spotted by Ms. O’Brien and Ms. Laemmle did not appear to be in bad condition, and the two observed the whale feeding, “which is good,” Ms. O’Brien said.

“But you’re left asking, ‘How did it get to this?’ share,” she said. “Which is not a positive story overall, because these passageways are only being created to allow travel through due to warming temperatures.”

Ms O’Brien said she and Ms Laemmle were unable to assess the whale’s age or sex, but planned to send photos to researchers in the Pacific to help identify it. She also said the only way to track the whale would be to report other sightings.

Joshua Stuart, a quantitative ecologist at Oregon State University, who published a study on gray whales in Octobersaid the gray whale sighting in the Atlantic Ocean was “super cool,” but there were two important contextual elements.

First, whales can swim between ocean basins because of melted ice in the Arctic, which he said is “an expected outcome of climate change.”

Second, said Dr. Stuart, the gray whale comes from what is known as an “unusual mortality event” in the past four years, most likely due to prey loss in the Arctic. The most recent estimates estimate there are about 14,000 gray whales alive, up from 27,000 in 2019, he said.

Dr. Stuart said the mass extinction appears to be waning. During mass mortality events, gray whales begin feeding on things they don’t normally eat or appear in places where they are not normally seen, such as the Atlantic Ocean.

“There is a possibility that some of these unusual observations in the Atlantic Ocean could be a result of that,” he said. The gray whales in the Pacific and Arctic “just don’t get what they need to survive, so they look elsewhere for food, so we see them in all kinds of strange places.”

But the sporadic sightings of gray whales outside their usual habitat could be a sign of things to come, he said.

“What’s really cool is that we can track the recolonization of the Atlantic gray whale in real time,” said Dr. Stuart.

He said he did not expect a full recolonization of the Atlantic gray whale to occur anytime soon, noting that the process could take decades, even centuries. But because of the rapid warming of the water, Dr. Stuart, “we may be witnessing the very beginning of that.”

Still, Ms O’Brien said it was too early to say whether something like this would happen.

“The timeline goes beyond what we could observe,” she said. “It would take a very long time for that many whales to come and stay here.”

I gave my boring gray bathroom a heavenly makeover on a budget

A BUDGET DIYer has proven that it is possible to spend less and still get a luxurious look.

She transformed her entire bathroom space by adding some stylish elements for $100.

The first step was to refinish the old floor and get a luxurious look for less moneyCredit: TikTok bara_hari

“Let's give my boring millennial gray bathroom a heavenly makeover,” said Sam Franco (@bara_hari).

She showed the boring room that was ready for her Do it yourself hits.

First she pulled up the previous tile which revealed a beige floor with black marbled details.

“I almost forgot how ugly the floor underneath was,” she said.

Sam was ready to kick off her stylish transformation — all while saving money.

“I do this with the smallest possible budget.”

Her inspiration came from images of black and white themed bathrooms from the 1920s.

First she made sure the floors were thoroughly cleaned by removing all the adhesive from the old tiles.

Her makeover mission also included using an entire bottle of Goo Gone and another bottle of 90% alcohol.

It took three boxes of black and white Floor Pops peel-and-stick vinyl floor tiles to get the inspired look she wanted.

Sam also warned that the project could require some extra effort to become tenant-friendly.

Her Floor Pop peel and stick tiles can be found on Amazon for $13.97 per box and are described as water-resistant and washable, while being easy to apply.

The home improvement product received many five-star reviews.

“These tiles did the trick: easy to install and transformed my bathroom floor from old, stained linoleum to a fresh, new look!” wrote on copper.

“Nice quality, easy to install, nice design!” said another buyer.

Her only complaint was that some of the patterns didn't match up perfectly.

Still, she didn't complain because of her budgetary constraints and the fact that she didn't have much to measure.

“Luckily the linoleum tiles that were already on the floor were the exact same size as the tiles I replaced them with,” she said.

After realizing some of the tiles weren't sticking, she went in with sandpaper to sand down the floor.

Next came the cutting process using a cutting mat, rotary cutter, acrylic ruler and X-acto.

She made sure to be extra careful around the toilet area.

The plain bathroom countertop with a marbled yellow appearance was the next to be replaced.

She ended up using floor tiles that were ultra-thin for the back wall area.

Sam was a fan of the black and white star pattern look, but not her striped shower curtain that gave too much of a sailor vibe.

She decided to go with a white shower curtain paired with black shower hooks from Home Goods.

“I thought it looked much more stylish. Super in love with the plain white,” she said.

She also loved that the curtain had some texture.

She may not have been able to paint the already peeling walls, but she got around the problem by adding new elements to the space and upgrading her plain towels with a patterned design.

Her fans were floored by the new floor.

“You encouraged me more to change my bathroom, thank you!” said one follower.

“That bathroom aesthetic is my literal dream,” said another viewer.

She also added a piece of furniture with plants, as well as candles and other decorative pieces, including floral prints on the walls.

She had already envisioned adding a new fixture and light switches, but she was pleased with her chic new space — and especially the price.

“I'm pretty happy with it. I spent maybe $100,” she said.

Grabbing a pint or glass of sauvignon blanc after work or enjoying a drink with friends on the weekend is a world away from most people's idea of an alcoholic.

But many women are unaware that their drinking has become problematic without becoming dependent on alcohol. In other words, these adults become 'victims of gray area alcohol use'.

Alcohol use disorders in women have increased by 80 percent over the past thirty years.

Women's Health Coach and Accredited Gray Area Drinking Coach Sarah Rusbatch from Perth has discussed the issue in her latest book Beyond Booze and has created a simple checklist to determine if you are a gray area drinker.

After developing a dysfunctional relationship with alcohol in 2019, Sarah decided to give up alcohol. Despite the monumental leap, the author has never looked back.

Now she is on a mission to help others who struggle with gray area alcohol use, helping them create an alcohol-free lifestyle.

Sarah has channeled her journey to help other women who were stuck in her previous predicament to achieve a healthier and happier way of life.

Are you a gray area drinker?

1. Are you concerned about the amount of alcohol you drink?

2. Do you set rules for yourself about your drinking behavior, for example how many drinks you can drink and how often?

3. Do you secretly worry about drinking and find yourself regretting drunken decisions and conversations?

4. Does alcohol feel like it's taking your life?

5. Are you not always honest with others about how much you drink?

6. Do you take breaks from drinking alcohol, but later return to old habits?

If you've ticked 'yes' to even one of the above, Sarah says it's a sign you're in the gray drinking zone.

She said: 'Drinking in the gray area describes people who consume more than a moderate amount of alcohol but do not meet the criteria for actual dependence.

'Most don't see themselves as needing help, but they do recognize that their alcohol use is negatively impacting their lives in some way: physically, mentally or both.

She concluded: 'Grey area drinkers have passed the 'take it or leave it' point and are using alcohol for something else: reward, relaxation, self-confidence, to cool down or to numb themselves from their emotions.'

It comes after a new report found British women are the biggest binge drinkers in the developed world, with one in four bingeing every month.

About 26 percent admit to consuming six or more alcoholic drinks on one occasion, with experts blaming a 'ladette' and 'wine o'clock' culture.

This is more than double the average rate of 12 percent among the 33 countries analyzed by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

British women were matched only by those from Denmark (26 percent), followed by Luxembourg (24 percent) and Germany (22 percent).

The OECD's Health at a Glance 2023 report warns that alcohol increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, cirrhosis and certain cancers.

British men are the third biggest binge drinkers, with 46 percent drinking the equivalent of 60 grams of pure ethanol on one occasion in the past 30 days.

This places them behind Romania (55 percent) and Denmark (49 percent) and compared to an international average of 27 percent.

Addiction expert John Britton, emeritus professor at the University of Nottingham, said: 'These figures are extremely worrying. Harm is happening right under our noses because alcohol remains an integral part of British society and everyday life, just as tobacco was.

'In other countries, alcohol is used as a social lubricant – a way to make social occasions more fun – and not as a way to become legless, as is often the case here.

'Too many people also use alcohol to relax at the end of a stressful working day, when they should be looking for healthier alternatives.'

Britons each drank the equivalent of 10 liters of pure ethanol in 2021 – around 111 bottles of wine – the latest figures show. This is an increase compared to 9.9 liters in 2011.

And Trinny Woodall looked typically chic as she stepped out in south-west London on Wednesday, the day before her milestone 60th birthday.

The 59-year-old businesswoman and fashion expert opted for a long dark gray jacket and matching smart trousers upon arrival in an office building.

Under her coat, which was sealed with a silver brooch, she wore a silver blouse with ruffles and added a stylish hat to her look.

The brunette beauty completed her outfit with chunky black boots and carried a simple yet sophisticated leather bag.

The outing comes after Trinny said earlier on Wednesday she feels like she is going 'crazy' over a mouse infestation in her home and admitted she wants to leave her London home.

She said she called pest control twice to resolve the problem, but she still heard mice crawling in her walls.

On Wednesday morning, Trinny revealed that her stepson Zak rushed to her side when she woke up and said he had taken a recording of the rodents.

On her Instagram page she said: 'Zak came back this morning as he had dropped a friend off at the airport and he rushed over to me when I woke up and said 'Listen to this recording' and he had recorded the mice in the walls .

He said, “They're everywhere Trinny. We just can't get rid of it' and you're all telling me all these wonderful ideas.

'A few weeks ago we had the mouse man back and he was setting traps everywhere.

She added: “We have to start blocking because I can't live in this house with mice like that. It drives me a bit crazy and I don't like to think about where they're going.'

Trinny first announced to her followers in November that she had to call in the 'pied piper' to help her with her problem.

The outing comes after Trinny said earlier on Wednesday she feels like she is “going crazy” over a mouse infestation in her home and admitted she wants to leave her London home

She said at the time: 'The Pied Pipers are coming. You think I'm funny, but actually we have mice in the house like you can't imagine.

'We have a real plague of mice. We've had these little blue things that we put on each plug. They don't work.'

She added: “I don't know how many there are. I put my ear to the wall in the sitting room last night, which I shouldn't have done, and I heard so much rumbling.'

Trinny's two dogs have also failed to catch the mice and she has now told her followers she is in despair over her problem.

Earlier this year, Trinny joked that her house is infested with so many mice that it has become a “Ritz hotel” of rodents.

Trinny said the uninvited guests snuck into her Notting Hill home after her daughter Lyla left for university in Spain last September.

In January, she told the I'm Absolutely Fine podcast that the mice are so fearless that they dance around her kitchen and even play with her dogs: Parson Russell terrier Lily and lurcher Daffy.

She split with advertising guru Charles Saatchi last year and now shares her home with her stepson and nephew.

Last month it was announced that the Duchess of York was diagnosed with malignant melanoma just months after treatment for breast cancer.

The 64-year-old underwent breast surgery for cancer last year, with insiders saying it was 'not an easy time' for her.

The mother of two children had a number of moles removed during breast reconstruction last year, one of which turned out to be malignant.

The Duchess, Prince Andrew's ex-wife, was described as “in good spirits” after the “disturbing” news, which she was told just days after Christmas.

Via an Instagram post, she revealed that she was now taking some time for herself, having been diagnosed after several moles were removed during reconstructive surgery following her mastectomy in June.
