Finally, the world can stop speculating and coming up with countless fantastic conspiracy theories or tasteless ‘jokes’ about what happened to Kate Middleton.

I’m sure there are plenty of people who were embarrassed when the news broke of her cancer diagnosis on Friday. But the one person I think of in all of this, the one person my heart goes out to in every way, is Prince William.

This poor man.

From his parents’ divorce when he was just ten years old, to their subsequent divorce, quickly followed by the untimely death of his adoring, adored mother, we have witnessed time and time again how life threw hardships at him.

In recent years he has dealt with increasing disagreements with his only sibling Harry and sister-in-law Meghan, his father’s cancer, and now this – an unexpected and tragic burden on top of everything else.

The distance from Harry is undoubtedly felt particularly keenly.

The only person I think about in all of this, the only person my heart goes out to in every way, is William. From his parents’ divorce when he was just ten years old, to their subsequent divorce, quickly followed by his mother’s untimely death, we have witnessed time and time again the hardships that life has thrown at him. (Photo: Harry and William with Diana).

In recent years he has faced increasing disagreements with his only sibling Harry and sister-in-law Meghan, most recently his father's cancer, and now this – an unexpected and tragic burden on top of everything else.

In recent years he has faced increasing disagreements with his only sibling Harry and sister-in-law Meghan, most recently his father’s cancer, and now this – an unexpected and tragic burden on top of everything else.

After all, he’s the only person who fully understands what this is like. The only person to have endured both divorce and the death of a parent, in such a devastating public setting, is irreconcilably estranged.

There were certainly too many stones thrown, too much pain and too many injuries for Harry to provide any comfort or strength to William.

William who now carries the weight of the crown as his 75-year-old father undergoes his own treatment for cancer; William must support his young family like never before.

As someone who has danced with cancer myself, I know how overwhelming it is for your partner. My husband was terrified when I was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 2014, much more terrified, he later told me, than I seemed.

Our children were 14, 13 and the twins were 11. While everyone gathered around me, few thought to contact my husband.

He stepped in to care for the children, driving them back and forth, making sure their lives continued to progress normally, all the while worrying about what might happen to me.

When friends called him, they asked about me, and like William, he bore much of the burden alone, putting on a brave face, knowing he had to be strong for all of us.

We now know that the prince pulled out of his godfather King Constantine’s memorial service at 11am last month because he had just heard of Kate’s cancer. Two days later he was back at work and showed tremendous courage and devotion to duty.

We will hear endless speculation about Kate in the coming days, but few think about the partners and everything they have to go through when their loved one is struck by a serious illness.

William’s pain is even deeper right now considering his three young children: George, 10, Charlotte, 8, and Louis, just 5.

They are not much younger than William was when his mother died, and that trauma and grief, the specific fear of losing a mother, is undoubtedly something he will bend heaven and earth to protect them.

We don’t have a prognosis for Kate. She says that she is receiving preventive chemotherapy, that she feels ‘good’ and is ‘getting stronger every day’. We are all thinking of her and praying.

But illness is a great equalizer.

The distance from Harry is undoubtedly felt particularly keenly. After all, he's the only person who fully understands what this is like. The only person to have endured both divorce and the death of a parent, in such a devastating public setting, is irreconcilably estranged.

No matter how much help the Waleses have, how many nannies or nurses there are, William must now be a steadfast force for his children and wife.

And while Kate may need space to break down, to lie awake at night with fear dancing around her head, William will feel like he needs to be a rock, as all partners must do when their loved ones are so seriously affected are.

This is as much William’s struggle as it is Kate’s, but he, as stoic and kind in public as his mother always was, will now be under pressure to keep that mask on at home too.

No matter how scared he is, he can’t show it.

He has to keep smiling for the children and reassure them that mommy will be fine.

Children are remarkably observant: if he lets his fears surface, they will notice them, so he must keep it all deeply hidden while surrounding them with the safety, security, and love they need right now.

He is not only a husband, a father and a prince; his main role at this time is caregiver.

Whatever your life revolved around – family, work, charities, royal garden parties – everything stops when hospitals and doctors take over your daily life.

Considering everything William has been through in his life, we can only hope that he has trusted friends and loved ones to care for him as well.

They need to let him know that no matter how stoic he has to be for Kate and their children, he needs to know that he can crack, to let out that scared fifteen-year-old boy who just lost his mother.

And some contain plant sterols, which prevent the body from absorbing cholesterol.

During the summer season, it is essential to pay attention to our cholesterol levels to maintain good heart health. Fortunately, there are plenty of delicious foods available that can help increase our good cholesterol levels and keep us feeling healthy and energetic. Here are eight simple summer foods you can include in your diet to promote good cholesterol:

1. Avocado:

Avocados are rich in healthy fats that can help increase HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, the good type of cholesterol.

2. Nuts:

Almonds, walnuts and other nuts are packed with nutrients that can improve cholesterol levels. Enjoy a handful of nuts as a snack or add them to your salads and yogurt.

3. Olive Oil:

Use olive oil as your primary cooking oil instead of butter or vegetable oil. Olive oil contains monounsaturated fats that can increase HDL cholesterol levels.

4. Oily Fish:

Salmon, mackerel and trout are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which can increase good cholesterol levels and reduce inflammation in the body.

5. Oats:

Start your day with a bowl of oatmeal topped with fresh fruit. Oats are high in soluble fiber, which can help lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels while increasing HDL cholesterol.

6. Fruits and Vegetables:

Add a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables to your summer meals. They are rich in antioxidants and fiber, which can improve heart health and cholesterol levels.

7. Legumes:

Beans, lentils and chickpeas are all excellent sources of soluble fiber and plant protein, which can help lower LDL cholesterol and increase HDL cholesterol levels.

8. Green Tea:

Swap sugary drinks for refreshing green tea. Green tea contains antioxidants called catechins, which may help improve cholesterol levels and protect against heart disease.

Cole has roots in one of Hollywood’s founding families, as his mother was the granddaughter of Harry Warner – one of the four founders of Warner Bros.

Cass wrote the biography The Brothers Warner: The Intimate Story of a Hollywood Studio Family Dynasty.

It was published on June 12, 2008, following a 2007 television documentary of the same name that was written, directed and produced by Warner.

While creating the two projects, Cass founded her own production company called Warner Sisters.

She was a proud grandmother to Cole’s three children: sons Ryland, 19, and Colt, 15, and daughter Steely Rose, 11.

In her Instagram profile, Cass described herself as a “3rd generation filmmaker, author, mother, Nona, concerned citizen” and “Rip’s mother,” referring to son Cole’s Yellowstone character.

Her most recent post was from January and showed her grandsons.

‘Can you hear we have the future! Good souls get in line. So proud of them: Ryland and Colt. A job well done by Mr. Cole and dear Cynthia!” she captioned it.

I was on top of the world. Literally. The summit of Everest, 8,848-metres high. It had taken six gruelling days and nights to get there after leaving base camp and the final hours along the summit ridge had been terrifying – the rocky track as thin as thread with a vertical drop either side. Dead bodies littered the way.

When I finally reached the prayer flags fluttering in the wind at the top, I sat down exhausted.

The view was unarguably magnificent – blue sky against white snow, surrounded by the most glorious mountains in the world. I hadn’t expected to feel triumphant. But I thought there would be a sense of relief that I’d finally made it.

Instead, I just felt numb. And I knew I still had to get down. Descending high mountains is just as difficult and dangerous as climbing up them. As it turns out, I was right to be anxious, something terrible was yet to happen.

I wondered how I got there. A 51-year-old woman from north London who is the most unlikely athlete.

At school, I was the arty one, not the sporty one. I never wanted to be a mountaineer. But somehow I had become a record-breaking adventurer. The first woman in the world to achieve ‘The Sea, Street, Summit Challenge’ – which is to swim the English Channel, run a road marathon and summit Mount Everest.

However, this wasn’t what I had always wanted. What I always wanted was to be a mother.

Jessica Hepburn, the first woman in the world to achieve ‘The Sea, Street, Summit Challenge’

Ms Hepburn trained for six years and made three attempts before reaching Everest's summit

Ms Hepburn trained for six years and made three attempts before reaching Everest’s summit

My long, hard journey to the summit of Everest started when I was 34. The day my partner, Peter, and I looked at each other and said: ‘Let’s make a family.’ We had been together for several years. We both had successful careers in the arts world. I had recently become Chief Executive of a London theatre – the Lyric Hammersmith – and I mistakenly thought I was one of the women who could ‘have it all’.

So we threw away the contraception and started trying. It was fun at first – making love for a purpose as well as for pleasure. Like so many couples we thought that soon we’d see a double line on a pregnancy test.

But after a year nothing had happened. We went to our first fertility clinic and were diagnosed with ‘unexplained infertility’. Around a third of all couples who struggle to conceive receive this frustrating diagnosis. We started on IVF. We got pregnant first time. But lost the baby early on. We went through another round. The same thing happened.

IVF was the first gruelling physical and mental endurance journey I undertook. It was a rollercoaster I rode for ten years, mostly in secret. Infertility is shrouded in shame. I didn’t tell family, friends or colleagues.

My job was often glamorous, mixing with famous directors and actors. But at first night theatre parties, behind my smiles for the camera, I was going through the saddest years of my life.

Miscarrying my babies in public toilets, sometimes tying a jumper around my waist to hide the blood and carrying on as if nothing had happened.

The façade cracked when a pregnancy was discovered as ectopic at three months. A perfect baby but not in my womb: in my stomach. An emergency operation saved my life. But pregnancy loss and infertility is barely recognised as an injury, illness or bereavement. As soon as I was discharged from hospital I went back to work.

The worst part of all was what it did to my mental health. I felt like a failure as a woman. I grew distant from my friends as they had their own families. The pain of their happiness too much to bear. I thought I would never be happy.

In total we spent over £70,000 in our pursuit of parenthood and got into debt to pay for it. But in the end the closest I ever came to becoming a biological mother was a cluster of cells. The only evidence the scars across my tummy from my ectopic emergency.

Aged 43, I instinctively knew it was time to give up on my own eggs. Around the same time my relationship with my partner, Peter, started to break down. Perhaps if we had stayed together we could have explored an alternative route to parenthood – adoption, egg or sperm donation, surrogacy. But we separated. It broke me: I fell into the abyss.

I was in my forties. Childless, single and alone. I didn’t know what I wanted from life anymore.

I had a fabulous career, but it wasn’t making me happy. So I gave up my job. I moved back to my childhood home to live, and care for my elderly mum. That’s when I started to exercise my way out of heartbreak.

I’d never swum in open water before so swimming the 21 miles that separated England from France was an odd choice. I couldn’t even swim very well. But I had enjoyed going to our local pool as a child – and it was a memory from then that sparked the idea.

Back in the 1970s and 80s swimming the English Channel made headline news. When I failed to get a place in my school swimming gala I told my disappointed dad that it didn’t matter because one day I was going to swim the Channel instead.

I loved my dad so much and I wanted to make him proud. He would have made a wonderful grandfather but after suffering a series of strokes he died in 2012 on the day I received the negative result of one of my final rounds of IVF.

I trained for two years – hours and hours doing drills in the pool throughout the winter, and then in the summer in Dover Harbour. When I achieved my qualifying swim of six hours in water below 16 degrees – I was ready to make an attempt.

I began my swim out of sadness on 2 September 2015 at 1.30am. It became my own version of giving birth – 17 hours 44 minutes and 30 seconds of labour in the sea. I suffered with violent vomiting, jellyfish stings all over my body and face. But when my feet finally touched the sand in France, all the pain was eclipsed by euphoria.

The adrenalin buzz of achieving something so big had got me, so I then set out to run the London Marathon. It had been on my bucket list but I had never seriously considered it because I am a rubbish runner.

When I started training a stranger shouted out at me that I must get exhausted running so slowly. On 23 April 2017, every step of the 26.2 miles from Greenwich to the Mall was a slog and I eventually finished in 5 hours and 27 minutes. There will never be a sub four in me.

But on the positive side, I had started using my challenges to raise awareness for fertility causes – writing books and touring to schools across the country to tell my story.

I want young people today to learn more than ‘how not to get pregnant’. They need to know the warning signs of fertility problems; the impact of age on pregnancy success; the limits, costs and ethics of reproductive science.

And then, finally, I embarked on the biggest journey of my life: to the top of the world. I had heard that very few people had swum the Channel and summitted Everest and that no woman had achieved the ‘Sea, Street, Summit Challenge’ – running a marathon as well. I wanted to give it a go.

I was under no illusion about the dangers. Every year a few hundred people attempt to climb the mountain and several die.

It was going to be especially hard for a middle-aged woman who knew nothing about mountaineering. I had never put on a harness, or tied myself to a rope. I started training – climbing all the highest mountains in the UK, and around the world.

I spent hours going up hills with a pack on my back. This inspired me to take on another endurance challenge far more suited to an arty girl – listening to every single episode of my favourite radio programme – Desert Island Discs.

The show’s castaways became my companions – their wisdom and music fuelling me. They inspired me to start creating playlists for every aspect of life. For the mountains; for the mornings; for the sun, wind and rain. Music to cheer me up when I was feeling down. To push me through a final mile.

I also start creating playlists for my family – my parents, grandparents, Peter. And I created a playlist for ‘Molly’ our longed for, imagined child. For her I chose Beethoven’s ‘Ode to Joy’ because all every mother wants is for their child to be happy. Creating these playlists brought me joy and has enabled me to cherish my family – including those I’ve lost and never had at all.

It took me six years of training and three attempts to summit Everest – whom I now call Chomolungma which is her original Tibetan Sherpa name and means ‘Mother Goddess of the World’.

The first try was a non attempt – in 2020 two weeks before I was due to fly to Nepal the mountain was closed due to Covid. I went back in 2021 but was unable to summit. I got sick but also wasn’t fit enough.

I returned for a final time in 2022. My six-day climb began with crossing the Khumbu Icefall. A tumbling cascade of giant blocks of ice, which at any moment can crash down and obliterate you. You have to cross cavernous crevasses with hundreds of metres of blackness below you on lightweight wobbly metal ladders wearing crampons. It’s like treading a tightrope in stilettos. I projectile vomited for 11 hours until we reached Camp 1.

The sickness weakened me and when we reached Camp 2, I had to rest and recover for two days. And from there we still had to reach Camp 3 up the legendary Lhotse Face, a near verticle ice wall, and to Camp 4 on the South Col from where you commence the final ascent – which for me was another 13 long hours upwards through the night.

At 7.30am on the 14 May 2022, I finally made it. But reaching the top of a mountain is only half of the journey. My descent was to become the biggest test of all. Several hours later, at 8,000 metres in the Death Zone – so called because it is too high for helicopter rescue and there isn’t enough air to survive for more than a few hours – I was involved in a freak accident.

Somebody’s oxygen cylinder came hurtling down the mountain, knocking me over and breaking my left leg. Most climbers need at least two bottles of oxygen to reach the summit. The extra bottles are carried on the back of your bag or, sometimes, shamefully thrown away when finished.

I’ll never know whether the bottle was dislodged or discarded. But the result was the darkest two days of my life in which I looked death in the face.

Everyone who climbs Everest is attached in single file to the same safety rope (without it the blow would have knocked me off the mountain). There was someone from my team in front of me and someone behind, and for a while they did what they could to help.

They took off my pack and carried it for me. But the situation was highly stressful for all of us as the injury had made me a life-threatening liability and everyone’s oxygen was running out. I could hardly move and at one point told them to leave me there to die and save themselves.

I crawled to Camp 4 where I passed out and when I woke up I discovered I had lost my sight due to snow and altitude blindness. This added an extra layer of terror.

Thankfully it returned after a couple of hours but even then the ordeal was far from over. I still had get down to Camp 2 where I could be rescued by helicopter. A descent that might usually take a few hours took a whole day – every slow painful step a game of Russian Roulette, my only support in that time Ibuprofen.

When I finally got to the relative safety of Camp 2, I collapsed and all I remember after that is lying in a tent vomiting.

The next day the weather was terrible and it was touch and go whether a helicopter would be able to land but suddenly I heard its thrum. I was carried to it in a frantic blur of sherpa, ice and pain and flown to hospital in Kathmandu.

My accident is not something I’d ever wish on anyone. But nor would I change it. Facing death has made me want to live. And one of the greatest gifts of my adventure from sea to summit is the renewed and profound relationship it has given me with Nature.

For a long time, I felt like she (Nature) didn’t love me because she wouldn’t give me a baby. Now I believe she does and saved my life – because all my injuries were man-made and if the weather hadn’t remained clement I would have surely died.

My adventures have turned the negative experiences of my life into positive. They have given me something else to focus on and the hardness of them has given me more strength to face everyday ups and downs.

I have become an activist for the power of adventure to improve your mental and physical health (including micro adventures closer to home and less dangerous).

The key is doing something new that requires effort. It makes you feel energised and ‘alive’. So I may never be a mother. I think I will always be carrying the grief of my personal life in my rucksack.

But in the words of Louis Armstrong, in one of the most selected Desert Island Discs songs of all time, I truly believe that it is (mostly) a ‘Wonderful World’.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made a touching surprise visit to the sister of a teacher killed in a school shooting, before singing Happy Birthday to her in a heartwarming video.

Heroic Irma Garcia sacrificed her own life during the murder at Robb Elementary School in Texas in May 2022 in an effort to keep her young students safe.

Two days later, Irma’s husband, Joe, tragically died of a broken heart.

Irma’s cousin John, 22, took to social media to share photos of the royals’ visit on his social media, with the overwhelmed relative saying he couldn’t believe how the Sussexes were so ‘loving and supportive’.

He said Harry and Meghan coming to their home felt “like having family and friends over” and that they “fit in well.”

John said the couple even surprised his mother with a birthday cake, while videos showed a glowing Meghan smiling warmly as she held the white desert.

She and Harry – who stood among their family in the kitchen – led the singing as they joined the heartwarming scene.

Meghan lit the candles on the cake and started the countdown singing Happy Birthday before saying “and everyone sang too,” to which a family member replied: “You’re first and then we’ll go after!”

The Duchess, 42, wore black skinny jeans and a long-sleeved blouse, which she paired with gold jewelry.

The actress looked cheerful as she held the decorated cake in her hands and presented it to John’s mother, while her husband Prince Harry stood smiling in the background.

And as they shared “intimate memories,” John said they shared “tears of joy” with the Montecito couple.

“Meghan Markle singing my mom happy birthday was the cutest and cutest thing ever, she even bought her a cake,” wrote Ms. Garcia’s grateful cousin.

In a conversation with HELLO! John added: ‘It really meant something to the world that Harry and Meghan turned up to visit the family, there were lots of tears of joy and heartfelt moments.

‘They were the nicest, most humble people ever, it was like having family and friends over, having a great time together.

“They fit right in, we laughed a lot and shared intimate memories together.”

John explained that the couple had kept in “contact” with the Garcia family every month since the senseless shooting.

“They keep in touch every other month, sometimes a little longer, but their busy lives really made their visit feel more special,” he said.

On May 24, 2022, 19 children and two teachers were killed after a gunman walked into Robb Elementary School in Texas and started shooting.

One of the children, 10 years old, aspired to become a lawyer and another wanted to become a marine biologist.

A third student had saved money to go to Disney World. But they never got the chance to travel.

Meghan visited Uvalde just two days after the shooting, offered her condolences and placed a bouquet of white roses, tied with a purple ribbon, at the cross for 10-year-old Uziyah Garcia.

A spokesperson for the Sussexes told the newspaper that Meghan had gone there unannounced to privately express her condolences.

It is believed that after the visit, the Duchess went to the Herby Ham Activity Center to deliver crates of food and drink to blood donors.

On Friday, Harry and Meghan visited it all with smiles as they entered Austin’s La Barbecue restaurant.

Harry and Meghan both embraced co-owner Alison Clem in a warm hug before being escorted inside where they greeted other employees.

The Duchess appeared relaxed as she mingled with restaurant workers and even posed for photos with her husband.

This comes as the Duchess of Sussex is said to have hired a ‘new PR guru’ in time for her relaunch in Britain.

Meghan wants a killer publicist to help her promote a new mystery venture in 2024 that has reportedly been in the works for months.

An unnamed director has been appointed to help her handle the duchess’s British and European media activities and promote Archewell, the foundation she runs with husband Prince Harry.

The Duchess of Sussex’s new project has been in the pipeline since last year and is described by The Daily Telegraph as ‘very personal to her’ and ‘real to who she is’.

It will only fuel the deafening rumors that she wants to relaunch her lifestyle blog The Tig, especially after her friend Gwyneth Paltrow’s GOOP brand burst through its $250 million valuation over Christmas.

Yesterday, MailOnline revealed its search for a new UK PR manager, but those at the heart of the industry claimed it won’t be an easy job as the Sussexes don’t have a reputation for being good listeners.

One described the role as ‘a sandwich that many senior PR people won’t be willing to eat’.

Steve Glover, 73, couldn’t believe his luck when he checked his lottery numbers to discover he had won the windfall.

The Exeter retiree took his chances in March 2023 after yobs vandalized his caravan and foiled plans to retire in the Scottish Highlands.

And after a “series of bad luck”, ex-taxi driver Steve was left in shock after matching five numbers and the bonus.

After suffering two heart attacks that led to the collapse of his business and ruined his retirement plans, Steve never imagined he would spend the later years of his life the way he wanted to.

But that changed around this time last year.

Steve said: “I’ve also had a lot of bad luck over the years, with two heart attacks and an injury that left me unable to work.

“That led to the demise of my company.

“When the victory was confirmed, I made a cup of tea – my answer to everything – and told myself not to start the festivities yet.

“But now that the money is there, it looks like the party can begin.”

Steve is now looking at which camper he wants to spend the money on.

His plan is to then hit the road and build a little life for himself in Scotland.

We raised £12,000 a month from the Postcode Lottery for a year after a terrifying sign – this is the bizarre way we spend it

In addition to buying himself a new home, Steve also purchased a fleet of new luxury vehicles.

Steve’s passion for cars started during his RAF career, when he would drive for the Go-Kart racing team.

His time at RAF Leuchars also fueled his dream of moving to the Highlands after serving in the area.

He said: “I drove for the RAF Go-Kart racing team during my time at Leuchars, you could say the RAF gave me my two great loves in life, Scotland and a fascination with pretty much anything with an engine.

“And although the RAF gave me a go-kart, winning the Lotto has given me a real fleet of cars. I think my current favorite is my old classic, a Bentley R Turbo.”

It would be easy to dismiss Elon Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI as a case of sour grapes.

Mr. Musk sued OpenAI this week, accusing the company of breaching the terms of its founding agreement and violating its founding principles. In his story, OpenAI was founded as a non-profit organization that would build powerful AI systems for the good of humanity and give away its research freely to the public. But Musk claims OpenAI broke this promise by starting a for-profit subsidiary that took billions of dollars in investments from Microsoft.

An OpenAI spokeswoman declined to comment on the lawsuit. In a memo sent to employees on Friday, Jason Kwon, the company’s chief strategy officer, denied Mr Musk’s claims, saying: “We believe the allegations in this lawsuit may arise from Elon’s regret that he is not involved with the company today,” according to a copy of the memo I reviewed.

On one level, the lawsuit smacks of personal beef. Mr Musk, who co-founded OpenAI with a group of other tech heavyweights in 2015 and provided much of the initial funding but left in 2018 amid disputes with leadership, is upset at being sidelined in the talks about AI. Its own AI projects haven’t gotten as much traction as ChatGPT, OpenAI’s flagship chatbot. And Mr. Musk’s feud with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is well documented.

But amid all the animus, there’s a point worth making, because it illustrates a paradox at the heart of much of today’s AI conversations – and a place where OpenAI really has both sides has spoken from his mouth. and emphasizes that its AI systems are incredibly powerful and that they do not come close to matching human intelligence.

The claim centers on a term known as AGI, or “artificial general intelligence.” Defining what AGI means is notoriously difficult, although most people agree that it means an AI system that can do most or all of the things the human brain can do. Mr. Altman did that certain AGI as “the equivalent of an average human you could hire as a colleague,” while OpenAI itself defines AGI as “a highly autonomous system that outperforms humans at the most economically valuable work.”

Most leaders of AI companies argue that not only is it possible to build AGI, but that it is imminent. Demis Hassabis, the CEO of Google DeepMind, told me in a recent podcast interview that he thought AGI could arrive as soon as 2030. Mr. Altman said that AGI may be only four or five years away.

Building AGI is the explicit goal of OpenAI, and there are many reasons to want to get there first. A true AGI would be an incredibly valuable resource, capable of automating vast amounts of human labor and making a lot of money for its creators. It’s also the kind of shiny, audacious goal that investors like to fund, and that helps AI labs recruit top engineers and researchers.

But AGI can also be dangerous if it can outsmart people, or if it becomes deceptive or no longer aligned with human values. The people who started OpenAI, including Mr. Musk, worried that an AGI would be too powerful to be owned by a single entity, and that if they ever got close to it, they would have to change the control structure around it. to prevent it from causing damage or concentrating too much wealth and power in the hands of one company.

That’s why when OpenAI partnered with Microsoft, it specifically gave the tech giant a license that only applied to “pre-AGI” technologies. (The New York Times has sued Microsoft and OpenAI for using copyrighted work.)

Under the terms of the deal, Microsoft’s license would no longer apply if OpenAI ever built anything that met the definition of AGI – as determined by OpenAI’s nonprofit board. OpenAI’s board could decide to do whatever it wanted to ensure that OpenAI’s AGI benefited all of humanity. That could mean many things, including open sourcing the technology or shutting it down completely.

Most AI commentators believe that today’s advanced AI models do not qualify as AGI because they lack sophisticated reasoning skills and often make stupid errors.

But in his legal filing, Mr. Musk makes an unusual argument. He states that OpenAI has done that already AGI has achieved with its GPT-4 language model, released last year, that the company’s future technology will qualify even more clearly as AGI

“Based on information and belief, GPT-4 is an AGI algorithm, and therefore expressly beyond the scope of Microsoft’s September 2020 exclusive license with OpenAI,” the complaint reads.

What Mr. Musk is arguing here is a bit complicated. In short, he says that because OpenAI has achieved AGI with GPT-4, it should no longer license it to Microsoft, and the board should make the technology and research more freely available.

His complaint cites the now infamous “Sparks of AGI” paper from a Microsoft research team last year, which argued that GPT-4 showed early indications of general intelligence, including signs of human-level reasoning.

But the complaint also notes that OpenAI’s board is unlikely to make decisions about its AI systems Actually qualify as AGI because once it does, it will have to make major changes in how it deploys and benefits from the technology.

Moreover, he notes that Microsoft — which now has a non-voting observer seat on OpenAI’s board, following an upheaval last year that resulted in Mr. Altman’s temporary resignation — has a strong incentive to deny that OpenAI’s technology qualifies as AGI. That would end its license to use that technology in its products, potentially jeopardizing huge profits.

“Given Microsoft’s enormous financial interest in keeping its gates closed to the public, the new, conflicted and obedient board of OpenAI, Inc. have every reason to ever delay OpenAI achieving AGI,” the complaint reads. “On the contrary, it will always take a day for OpenAI to reach AGI, like ‘Tomorrow’ in ‘Annie’.”

Considering his track record of questionable lawsuits, it’s easy to question Mr. Musk’s motives here. And as the head of a competing AI startup, it’s not surprising that he wants to drag OpenAI into messy lawsuits. But his lawsuit highlights a real conundrum for OpenAI.

Like its competitors, OpenAI is eager to be seen as a leader in the race to build AGI, and it has a vested interest in convincing investors, business partners and the public that its systems are improving at breakneck speed.

But because of the terms of the deal with Microsoft, OpenAI’s investors and executives may not want to admit that the technology actually qualifies as AGI, if and when it does.

That has put Mr. Musk in the strange position of having to ask a jury to rule on what constitutes AGI, and to decide whether OpenAI’s technology has reached the threshold.

The lawsuit has also put OpenAI in the strange position of downplaying the capabilities of its own systems while continuing to fuel expectations that a major AGI breakthrough is just around the corner.

“GPT-4 is not AGI,” OpenAI’s Mr. Kwon wrote in the memo to employees on Friday. “It is capable of solving small tasks in many jobs, but the ratio of the work done by a human to the work done by GPT-4 in the economy remains staggeringly high.”

The personal vendetta that fueled Musk’s complaint has led some people to view it as a frivolous lawsuit – one commentator compared it’s about ‘suing your ex for renovating the house after your divorce’ – that will quickly be dismissed.

But even if it’s dismissed, Mr. Musk’s lawsuit points to important questions: Who gets to decide when something qualifies as AGI? Are tech companies exaggerating or sandbagging (or both) when it comes to describing how capable their systems are? And what incentives underlie the different claims about how close or far from AGI we might be?

A lawsuit against a resentful billionaire is probably not the right way to resolve these questions. But they’re good to ask, especially as progress in AI continues to accelerate.

The official cause of death of legendary comedian Richard Lewis was revealed on Friday when his death certificate was made public.

Lewis died Tuesday evening at the age of 76 after reportedly suffering a heart attack while battling Parkinson’s disease.

Three days later a copy of his death certificate was obtained by The explosion listed the cause of death as “cardiac arrest.”

Parkinson’s disease, which prompted Lewis to retire after his diagnosis in April 2023, was noted as his secondary cause of death.

The news emerged after Lewis’ widow shared her appreciation for the numerous “loving tributes” from his fans in a social media post on Thursday.

Joyce Lapinsky, who tied the knot with the stand-up star in 2005, shared a post via her late husband’s account on X (formerly Twitter).

It arrived just hours after the Curb Your Enthusiasm star reportedly died of a heart attack at home at the age of 76.

‘This is Joyce, Richard’s wife. Thank you for your loving tribute,” she wrote. “He would be extremely excited and moved, just like me.”

Many of Lewis’s fans sought to make donations in his honor as stories of his kindness and positive impact on friends like Jamie Lee Curtis, so his widow shared a way they could honor his life and work.

“In response to many questions, I know Richard would appreciate donations in his memory to the Los Angeles-based charity comedygivesback.com or a charity of your choice,” she added.

Comedy Gives Back is a registered charity that provides financial assistance to struggling comedians, including payments to cover insurance premiums and rent.

It also advertises that it helps comedians find and pay for mental health treatment, and offers a service that provides an alternative to health insurance for low-income, uninsured comedians.

Comedians also have access to addiction treatment and the charity boats that offer weekly 12-step meetings in Los Angeles, as well as holding gatherings and comedy festivals for comedians on the road.

The organization held an important place for Lewis, who is currently listed as a member of the ‘talent board’, along with Caroline Rhea and Howie Mandel.

Following Lapinsky’s post, the charity was flooded with donations in honor of the Latin comedian.

Lewis had been open over the years about his decades-long battle with alcohol and drug addiction.

He credited 1994 as the year he finally got sober after being hospitalized due to a cocaine overdose.

That was also the year his friend John Candy died of a heart attack at the age of 43 after struggling with drug and alcohol abuse for years.

Lewis co-starred with Candy in his last film, the Western comedy Wagons East, which required a significant rewrite of the script and had to rely on a body double for scenes not filmed before Candy’s death during production.

While fans of Lewis’ sketch comedy or his dozens of appearances on Curb Your Enthusiasm were likely familiar with his jokes about his romantic life and fear of intimacy, he was dating or married to Lapinsky for much of that time.

The future couple was introduced in 1998 when they both attended an album release party for Ringo Starr.

In a 2010 interview with Paul Freeman, Lewis revealed that a mutual friend had tried to set the two together years earlier when he starred with Jamie Lee Curtis in the sitcom Anything But Love, but Lapinsky had turned them down because she thought he ‘crazy’ at the time.

But after working on his addiction issues, she was more receptive during their 1998 meeting.

“I suspected she was Italian and 33,” Lewis recalled of their first important meeting. “She said, ‘Let’s nip this in the bud. I’m 42. I’m a Jew from Minnesota. So if you’re worried about that… And if kids are important…’ sense it.”

It was a chance meeting for Lewis, as he said he could “finally commit to someone.”

“I met the right woman at the right time,” he added.

The couple dated for several more years and only became engaged in 2004 after Lewis took Lapinsky to one of his therapy sessions, during which he said his therapist shouted, “This is as good as it gets!” after sharing some of his concerns about the relationship.

The lovebirds married in 2005 and Lapinsky was with Lewis until the end.

Before his death, Lewis changed his home’s default mortgage to a lease transfer trust deed, which would make it easier for her to continue living in their home without him, according to the New York Post.
