At least six teens were gunned down Monday afternoon around the spot where Milwaukee’s Juneteenth celebration had just ended, according to police and fire departments.

The shooting occurred around 4:20 p.m. outside the Greater Philadelphia Church of God in Christ, according to witnesses and a Facebook Live video taken by a bystander in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.

Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said six teenagers were shot, including a 17-year-old boy, who may have been a gunman himself and is now in custody.

Norman said the shooting may have stemmed from a fight between some girls and young women, but he did not know what sparked the dispute.

It comes after a weekend in which numerous shootings and deaths were reported across the country. At least eight people were killed in separate shootings this weekend in nearby Chicago.

At least six teens were shot Monday afternoon as Milwaukee’s Juneteenth celebration just ended, according to police and fire departments.

Milwaukee officials said the victims, four girls and two boys, ranged in age from 14 to 19 years old. Police were still looking for other suspects they said had not yet been identified.

Injuries for those in the North King Drive shooting near Locust Street varied, but did not appear life-threatening, the chief said.

“Milwaukee, what’s wrong with our kids?” Norman wondered aloud at a press conference.

Norman noted that he participated in the city’s Juneteenth celebrations without bloodshed for eight years.

“Parents, guardians, the elderly, we must stop this violence that brings our children to these streets. No small arms, no weapons of destruction should be in the hands of our young people.’

“This is a story that plays out too often, and it gets really old. Really old,’ said Norman.

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson stressed that Monday’s June celebration itself was a safe and growing event, calling the ensuing violence “totally, totally unacceptable.”

“We had thousands and thousands of people here celebrating and pulling themselves together and having a sense of community. That’s something powerful. That’s the true story of what this day is,” said Johnson, a Democrat.

A man who identified himself as T. Jenkins told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that a fight between two women preceded the shooting.

A young man pulled out a gun and everyone dispersed, Jenkins said. The man fired several shots, he said.

Jenkins assisted a young woman with a neck wound.

“I put pressure on her neck,” he said. “I tried to keep everyone around me calm.”

The Facebook Live video taken in the immediate aftermath of the shooting showed at least two young people with gunshot wounds being treated on the sidewalk by paramedics.

The Facebook user tried to comfort her sobbing friend, who tried to contact her mother.

During the peaceful daytime Juneteenth event in Milwaukee, vendors sold food and wares while community organizations offered resources, snacks and free giveaways.

Music boomed from stalls and food trucks offering refreshing treats in the heat drew long queues.

Youth dance troupes, marching bands and practice teams entertained the crowd in a parade down King Drive earlier in the day. Police officers were stationed at various points along the route.

Keith Caldwell, another salesman, described the scene as follows: “I just heard a commotion, gunshots, people screaming.”

On event security, Caldwell spoke of the need for gun control.

“At the moment it is an uncontrollable situation,” he said.

Ivan McClellan, a photographer, was fascinated when he first encountered black cowboy culture years ago at a rodeo in Oklahoma.

He saw black people don cowboy hats and saddle horses, images that inspired him to do so fully document that community in his work.

This year, however, he wanted to go one step further. Mr. McClellan and Vince Jones-Dixon, a city councilman in Gresham, Oregon, wanted to organize a Juneteenth rodeo in Portland, one that would bring together the black cowboy and cowgirl communities in the Pacific Northwest.

On Saturday, they unveiled the inauguration Eight seconds Juneteenth Rodeo at the Portland Expo Center, where the Western lifestyle was showcased through barrel races, bull riding, and glittering heavy belt buckles.

“You see the cowboy, and it’s short for independence and perseverance and all that stuff about America,” said Mr. McClellan, who is black. “But then you combine it with black culture, and it just wobbles your brain and distorts things you thought were true.”

Mr. McClellan and other attendees noted on Saturday how black cowboys and cowgirls mixed their fashions with western staples: gold chains peeking out of plaid button-down shirts; women with acrylic nails adjusting their dusty jeans; cowboy hats flat across the front, bulging over the sides.

“It takes the things we know about black culture, and it takes the icon of the cowboy — John Wayne, Clint Eastwood — it takes that icon and distorts it,” said Mr. McClellan.

Jarron Owen, a bull rider from Centralia, Washington, who attended the rodeo, said such events are rare in the region.

“There’s such a small community of black people doing rodeos on the west coast,” Mr. Owen said. “Having a black rodeo in Portland is big.”

More than 2,000 people attended, Mr McClellan said. They stamped and cheered as bull riders jostled and swung, struggling to stay on the animal.

Mr. McClellan said they planned to make the rodeo a Juneteenth tradition.

“The western world was stark white when we came in,” he said. “We started throwing some black people into that world — and making some change.”

People lined up all afternoon for Shelly Flash’s specials: jerk cheese nachos and jerk chicken dinner tacos — that’s chicken, coconut rice, black beans, sweet plantains, pickled slaw, chipotle aioli, and jerk sour cream in a soft tortilla.

They were not disappointed.

The Jamaican taco business, 2 girls and a cook shop, is owned by Mrs. Flash, 40, and her daughter, Jataun. Their fans (some of whom know Ms. Flash from the TV show “MasterChef”) find out where they will be selling her food on Instagram and by word of mouth, since the Flash family does not yet own a restaurant of their own. Ms Flash was a teacher before the pandemic but decided last year to make food a full-time gig, she said. “I was like, ‘What would it look like if I gave me a chance?'”

Ms. Flash and 27 other black food vendors were actively nurturing the community during the weekend’s Juneteenth Food Festival at Brooklyn’s Weeksville Heritage Center at a time when many black families have left the city, drawn to regions where the cost of livelihoods are not so high. high and housing is more affordable. The city’s black population has declined by nearly 200,000 people over the past two decades.

“I’ve lived in Brooklyn for 17 years now and it’s changed so much,” says DJ Monday Blue, who played a mix of house music, disco, afrobeats and soul. Yet she saw so much positivity and hope in the meeting. “I like this organization, which focuses on the businesses and the black people who are here and say, ‘Hey, we’re still here.'”

The food festival was organized by Black-owned Brooklyn, an online publication that documents Black Brooklyn, and the vendors and customers were clearly passionate about delicious food. But they all also greatly appreciated the greater sense of belonging – both with their neighbors and with their history.

Throughout the green space, framed by flowers and trees, friends and generations of families gathered together to taste different cuisines: cornbread, lobster rolls and burgers, food from the Caribbean and Ethiopia, red food and drink to specially mark the holiday.

Nicole Kidd, 36, sat on the grass under a shade tree with her 8-year-old daughter, Miela Jones, and her mother-in-law, Patricia Jones. She had bought lunch at the Greedy vegan stall and ate the dessert first: banana pudding.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Mrs. Kidd didn’t know much about Juneteenth and its origins in Texas to mark the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. But, she said, “I’m excited that it’s being recognized now and excited that it’s being celebrated.”

In addition, there was a sense of reverence for Weeksville, a town of free black people founded shortly after New York abolished slavery in 1827.

Weeksville was once home to about 700 families. There was a school, a church and a newspaper. Only three of the town’s houses, known as the Hunterfly Road Houses, still stand on the site. They are now city landmarks and have been added to the National Register of Historic Places.

It wasn’t Nkenge Walcott’s first time in Weeksville – she used to work at the nearby school. “We often brought the kids here — they didn’t realize how much history there was in their own backyard,” she said.

Ms Walcott, 28, was accompanied by her 16-year-old niece, Isis Hughes, who wanted Ethiopian food. They went looking together Makina Cafes bright yellow truck and ordered sambusa, a thin, flaky pastry filled with lentils, and tikel gomen, cabbage with carrots and potato in turmeric ginger sauce. Then Mrs. Walcott went to GG’s Fish and Chips with soul for golden brown strips of fried catfish and washed it all down with a drink of red hibiscus. “I support my Spelman sister who owns it Brooklyn tea‘ said Mrs Walcott. “It’s really, really, really great iced tea.”

As the day progressed, visitors searched for sweets and lined up for mango popsicles Island Pops and Caribbean vanilla ice cream from Cream and Cocoa Creamery.

But the real staple of Juneteenth is red velvet cake.

Red food, from strawberry soda to watermelonare common on Juneteenth, and Carmella Charrington, who is the Doc’s Cake Shop tent, was busy selling pieces of red velvet cake, strawberry cake and a special green, black and red Juneteenth cake.

Although Ms. Charrington, 52, had grown up in Brooklyn, it was her first time in Weeksville and she was impressed by the location.

“I had to walk through it and just thank my ancestors,” she said. “We have to enjoy it because that’s what they would want us to do.”
