Thank you Keren Woodward, singer and star of the all-female 80s pop group Bananarama, for saying what I’ve been dying to express for a while. I was a little reserved in case people thought I had become a puritanical old fart, which, I assure you, is not the case.

But this week Keren said: ‘I don’t understand what some singers are wearing these days.’ I’d say the problem isn’t necessarily what they wear, but what they don’t wear.

“I have friends who have teenage daughters and these girls already have terrible body image and insecurities,” she continued, “and I don’t think having a woman like that on stage helps with that.”

Keren is absolutely right. Everyone from Dua Lipa, who recently announced she would be headlining Glastonbury, to the brilliant Oscar nominee Florence Pugh, seems to feel like they always have to appear half-naked in public. Likewise, Beyonce, one of the best-selling music artists of all time, is adored by young girls and women.

They love her music, just like they think megastar Taylor Swift’s songs touch their hearts and souls. But why do such talented, successful and powerful women feel the need to appear on stage virtually naked in jewel-encrusted leotards or, in Beyonce’s case, naked except for strategically placed jewelry astride a horse?

When Beyonce unveiled the artwork for her new album this week, I was thrilled to see her clothes back on… until I noticed the back of her leather pants had been cut away to expose her bum – why?

These stars must have worked extremely hard for the bodies they like to show off. There are no bingo wings, no bloated bellies, no swollen ankles. They must exercise every day and have expert chefs who prepare nutritious, healthy meals. Very different from the teenage fan who has to eat her way through school lunch, may have a bit of puppy fat and the only exercise she gets is copying a TikTok dance in her bedroom. No wonder so many girls have body problems and more young people than ever are receiving treatment for eating disorders, according to the NHS.

I have friends whose girls simply stopped eating and lifting weights to achieve the strong, handsome arms of their idols.

The sad reality is that far from being inspiring, many of today’s female pop stars are a danger to the mental health of young people.

Then there is the risk that girls run themselves by copying the outfits. Like Keren, I have friends whose teenage daughters spend hours listening to the music of the women they adore and do their best to look and dance like them. They hope Mom doesn’t notice when they sneak out in the requisite barely-there clothing.

Nothing can be more disturbing to a parent than seeing their little girl go out dressed like a porn star, unaware of the dangers this can bring.

In the 1980s, Bananarama’s heyday, and even into the 2000s, if reruns of the old Top Of The Pops on BBC 4 are to be believed, it wasn’t about showing the flesh.

Keren says they are proud of becoming pin-ups without being overtly sexy: “We became sex symbols in donkey jackets. We had no stylists or make-up artists. That wouldn’t happen now.’

But why wouldn’t that happen now? Since the turn of the century, we seem to have lost the sense that talent matters above all. Think of Annie Lennox or Debbie Harry; major stars appreciated for their beautiful voices and idiosyncratic sense of style, who always came across as intelligent and thoughtful in interviews.

For me, as a feminist, journalist, interviewer and cultural commentator, it felt like women were achieving something because of what we had fought for.

Women were valued for the quality of our minds, not primarily for the size of our breasts – or how willing we were to show them.

Of course, it’s not just pop stars who only appear in essentials. On every red carpet, be it the Oscars or the Baftas, there are always a number of beautiful, famous women who appear to be wearing as little as possible.

Sometimes the dresses are sheer and sheer and leave nothing to the imagination, or the cut is so tight that large, full breasts struggle to break free.

I have no doubt that this is a result of the proliferation of porn, an arena where women perform almost exclusively for the delight of men.

But it’s the hugely talented, half-naked, ripped women radiating sex and suggestiveness that bother me the most. Why don’t they consider the impact on their impressionable young fans? And the impact on women as a whole.

We have worked so hard to be seen as the intellectual equals of men. Please don’t blame us for being seen as nothing more than glorified strippers.

A fitting farewell for Charlie

Once I needed it, I hadn’t seen BBC’s Casualty in a while. But on Saturday I couldn’t miss the departure, after 38 years, of Charlie Fairhead. I was so relieved that he was saved from being stabbed in the chest and left for retirement in a yellow VW Beetle, the same car he had arrived in all those years ago. A happy ending for once.

Her husband, Sir Jason Kenny, quit in 2022 to become a coach. Now the children will have father and mother to take care of them.

“This is not PepsiCo, your former employer. This is the BBC!’ All my adult life I have willingly paid the licensing fee, knowing it would give me wonderful programs without any hint of the influence of the commercial world.

Yes, the BBC is short of money – always has been. But successive DGs have fallen out with governments when the Charter came up for renewal and received an increase.

Who will be willing to pay the license fee if they know the BBC is no better than its commercial rivals? I won’t and it will break my heart.

Dua Lipathe third album, Radical optimismis officially ready – and has a release date.

“RADIC OPTIMISM MY 3RD STUDIO ALBUM OUT OF MAY 3, 2024 BY @tyronelebon!!!!!!!!!!!!!” the singer revealed via Instagram on Wednesday, March 13, next to the album cover.

Lipa wrote the caption alongside the album cover, which shows the singer alone in the middle of the ocean at sunset while what appears to be a shark fin swims nearby.

Lipa also revealed the tracklist for the record, which features a total of 11 songs, including songs like “French Exit,” “Anything for Love,” “End of an Era,” “Happy for You,” “Illusion” and more.

“A few years ago a friend introduced me to the term radical optimism. It’s a concept that resonated with me, and I became more curious as I started playing with it and weaving it into my life,” Lipa said in a statement on Wednesday.

She added that the definition of radical optimism, “the philosophy that advocates looking for the good in every part of life, based on reason and evidence,” made her realize that she could endure whatever the universe threw at her brought her way.

“It struck me: the idea of ​​moving through chaos gracefully and feeling like you can weather any storm,” she said. “At the same time I was browsing through the music history of psychedelia, trip hop and Britpop. It’s always felt so confident and optimistic to me, and that honesty and attitude is a feeling I carried with me into my recording sessions.

MC HAMMER’s crazy oversized suit is back with a bang.

Dua Lipa And Callum Turner both stepped out at the 2024 British Academy Film Awards – but not together.

Ahead of the ceremony at London's Royal Festival Hall on Sunday, February 18, Lipa, 28, dazzled in a red Valentino cape dress with Tiffany & Co. jewelry as she walked the red carpet. Turner, 34, wore a black double-breasted Burberry suit, white shirt and black tie. Lipa attended the star-studded event as a presenter, while Turner was there as a guest.

The 'Houdini' singer spent time with Turner's mother, Rosemary Turner, on Thursday, February 15, while celebrating the actor's birthday. In a photo of the exchange obtained by the Daily emailLipa just smiled as she hugged Rosemary.

We weekly confirmed in January that Lipa and Callum were dating.

“They have only been dating for a while,” an insider said Usadding that the pair have “a great bond” and “the chemistry is there.”

The Boys in the boat actor “makes Dua happy and she is excited to see where things go,” the source said. “It's too early to see if there is any long-term potential between Dua and Callum, they are definitely interested in each other.”

Lipa and Callum “have some mutual friends who think they make a great couple,” the insider said.

The 'Levitating' singer sparked romance rumors with Callum after they were spotted getting cozy with him Masters of the air premiered in Los Angeles in January. Oppenheimer has won Best Film as well as sweeping the board in the major categories at the EE BAFTA Film Awards at The Royal Festival Hall on Sunday.

The epic biographical thriller led the wins with seven gongs, including Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. and Best Director for Christopher Nolan. It had the most nominations with 13.

The biggest night in British film returned with actor David Tennant as host and an array of guest presenters on hand to deliver awards throughout the night. 

Prince William attended the ceremony in London solo as his wife Kate Middleton continues her recovery from last month’s abdominal surgery.

Murphy, 47 – who plays the titular role in Nolan’s atomic bomb saga – picked up the prize at the prestigious awards ceremony.

He triumphed against Bradley Cooper for Maestro, Colman Domingo for Rustin, Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers, Barry Keoghan for Saltburn and Teo Yoo for Past Lives.

Accepting the trophy, he said: ‘Oh boy, holy moly, thank you very, very much BAFTA.’

He paid tribute to ‘the most dynamic, kindest producer-director partnership in Hollywood: Chris Nolan and Emma Thomas, thank you for seeing something in me that I probably didn’t see in myself.’

The Irish actor said to Nolan: ‘Thank for always pushing me and demanding excellence because that is what you deliver time and time again.’

Nolan also acknowledged his ‘fellow nominees and my Oppenhomies’, adding: ‘I know it’s a cliché to say, but I’m in awe of you.’

He said J Robert Oppenheimer was a ‘colossally knotty character’, adding: ‘We have a space to debate and interrogate and investigate that complexity and it’s a privilege to be a part of this community with you all.

Downey Jr, 58, also collected a BAFTA for his role as Lewis Strauss in the Hollywood blockbuster, which has swept the board during the 2024 awards season.

He admitted he owes the award to Nolan, producer Emma Thomas and leading man Murphy, as well as ‘British influence’.

Gesturing to Nolan, he said: ‘Recently that dude suggested I attempt an understated approach as a last ditch effort to resurrect my dwindling credibility.’

Downey Jr’s win set a new record for the longest gap between wins by any performer as it comes 31 years after his previous BAFTA, for the 1993 film Chaplin.

The previous record was 27 years, set by Sir Anthony Hopkins in 2021 when he won the award for best actor for The Father, nearly three decades after his 1994 win for Shadowlands.

Nolan won the Best Director BAFTA for Oppenheimer, his epic tale of how the nuclear bomb was created.

Before accepting the award from actor Hugh Grant, Nolan hugged Murphy.

Nolan joked that his brother ‘beat him up here’ by being in a chorus of a production 40 years ago.

Nolan has previously lost out despite numerous commercial successes such as Inception and The Dark Knight, the UK-born filmmaker won out against Jonathan Glazer [The Zone of Interest], Justine Triet [Anatomy of a Fall], Alexander Payne [The Holdovers], Bradley Cooper [Maestro] and Andrew Haigh [All of Us Strangers].

He paid tribute to Murphy and added to those who backed the film: ‘Thank you for taking on something dark’.

The director also acknowledged the efforts of nuclear disarmament organisations to bring peace.

Oppenheimer swept up in the big name categories, but it was closely followed by the surreal black comedy Poor Things.

It marked five awards for the film, as Emma Stone collected the Best Actress gong for her turn as Bella Baxter.

Accepting her award, she said: ‘Since we’re in London, I want to start by thanking dialect coach. She praised him for not laughing at her when he taught her how to say ‘water’.

‘I really wanted to thank my mum, because she’s the best person I know. Without her none of this would exist, including my life, so thank you for that Mum.’

The American actress said she was ‘in awe’ of all of the team behind the film, where she plays the part of a woman who is reanimated and implanted with the brain of a baby.

She paid tribute to the writers for coming up with the line ‘I must go punch that baby’ in a memorable dinner scene, and also hailed director Yorgos Lanthimos for ‘our friendship and the gift of Bella’.

Also thanking her mother, Stone said: ‘She kind of made me believe this crazy idea that I can do something like this.’

Dua Lipa and her new boyfriend Callum Turner marked a huge milestone in their relationship on Tuesday, as the pop star met his mother.

The singer, 28, beamed as she embraced Rosemary Turner, who sported bright red hair that matched Dua’s own fiery locks.

Callum, 34, looked in high spirits as he introduced his new girlfriend to his mum as they stood beside Dua’s parked car.

Dua cut a typically stylish figure in a red button-up shirt and blue jeans, with a pair of chunky black boots.

She bundled up from the cold in a grey coat and black woollen scarf, while hiding her face under a black baseball cap.

Callum looked casual in a black zip-up jumper as he happily greeted Rosemary, giving her a warm hug.

Tuesday marked Callum’s 34th birthday, with both his new love and his mum on hand to help him celebrate.

Callum previously revealed that it was his mother that gave him his love of film and inspired him to become an actor.

He told The Times how he inherited his natural talent from his working-class, ‘brilliant’ single parent, who was the ‘strictest mum on their London council estate’.

Speaking of his mother in 2016, who he then lived with in Chelsea, he said: ‘She instilled this belief in me that if I wanted to do something, anything, I should go for it. 

‘Although she was also always saying, “Get a trade. Become a plumber.” And I’m like, “No. I don’t want to be a plumber. I want to be a footballer.” I didn’t want the safe option. It’s nice to take risks.’

Speaking to The Independent in 2020, Callum said his contact with his Australian-based father growing up was ‘loose’ and that his father figures were ‘a lot of different gay guys, basically.’

Rosemary dreamt of being an actress but instead worked as a nightclub promoter, for venues including Ministry of Sound, which meant an eclectic mix of characters from the Eighties club scene were constantly visiting their home.

Callum explained: ‘My mum allowed a community of people around me and wasn’t protective of her love for me. It was almost like a tribe.’ 

He recalled to the Evening Standard in 2019 how Steve Strange, a singer with the British band Visage, ‘lived on and off with us’.

‘Living with Steve was brilliant, him screaming at my mum, “Don’t wear that out! Everyone’s going to see you and they’ll take the p*** out of me!”’ recalled the star.

Callum and Dua only confirmed their romance last month, during a very public display of affection in Hollywood.

News of their romance broke when the two stars were spotted getting cozy at a Beverly Hills party for his show Masters of the Air.

In footage obtained by TMZ, the pop star slow-danced with The Boys in the Boat star at the star-studded soiree.

An insider told Page Six: ‘It’s new, but they’re mad about each other’ adding: ‘She was at the premiere to support him.’

The pair were seen with their faces close together, though it was unclear whether they locked lips during their romantic interlude. 

As he left the party, Callum was asked whether he and Dua were an item – and rather than issuing a denial, he poured fuel on the fire by remaining coyly silent.

Dua was born in London in 1995 to Kosovan-Albanian parents who fled conflict and political instability in the Balkans.

She has often proudly referenced her Albanian origins on Instagram and in interviews with press. 

The star also enjoys family trips to the nation – and takes part in traditions such as balancing a glass on her head while dancing. 

Dua was granted citizenship in Albania back in November 2022 ahead of Albania’s 110th anniversary of independence from the Ottoman Empire. 

President Bajram Begaj said at the time he considered it an honour to do so because the singer has made Albanians famous throughout the world.

Born in London, Dua attended a small state primary school and had her first taste of performing while taking Saturday classes at the world-renowned Sylvia Young Theatre School.

After spending a few years in Pristina after her father’s job as a marketing manager took them back to his native Kosovo, Dua bravely decided to return to the UK alone at the age of 14 in pursuit of her dreams of pop stardom.

In 2014, after achieving 4 A-Levels at a Camden all-girls sixth form college, the talented teenager had signed with Warner Bros. Records.

Dua’s latest romance comes on the heels of her breakup from French boyfriend Romain Gavras.

Two Israeli rappers have called for the murder of three Muslim celebrities – singer Dua Lipa, model Bella Hadid – as well as ex-porn star Mia Khalifa in a controversial rap song that has become their country's unofficial war song.

Rappers Ness and Stilla released their drill song Harbu Darbu three months ago and it has since racked up 18 million views on YouTube.

In the song, the musicians threaten the three celebrities, who have all expressed anti-war sentiments and claim that the IDF will “rain a storm on them.”

Ness and Stilla dance their way through the music video, making sigils against the desert backdrop.

The song is in Hebrew, but when translated into English, it's clear from the start that it's going to be aggressive. The title, Harbu Darbu, means chaos.

The first two lines are: 'A bunch of damn rats coming out of the tunnel.

“Act like criminals, idiots, I swear there will be no forgiveness.”

Over a drill beat backing track, it goes on to talk about how the IDF is “in the mood for Harbu Darbu on your head.”

Ness and Stilla go on to mock Hamas, claiming that when they sing “Palestine Free” it sounds like a “holiday sale.”

The last verse starts by saying 'we'll rain a storm on you, you f****** and repeats the line, “Every dog ​​gets what he deserves in the end”.'

The rappers then list all the people on their list – or, as they claim, the IDF's list.

In the song this starts with the leaders of Hamas and Hezbollah, but then they turn their attention to the three celebrities.

The reason Dua Lipa is on the rappers' 'death list' is because of her calls for a ceasefire in the ongoing war in Gaza between the IDF and Hamas on social media.

In a post that has now been deleted, the Albanian-British singer wrote: “Every day that passes my heart aches for the people of Israel and Palestine.

'Sorrow for the lives lost in the horrific attacks in Israel.

'Sadness as I witness the unprecedented suffering in Gaza, where 2.2 million souls, half of them children, endure unimaginable hardship.

“For now, I desperately hope for a ceasefire in Gaza and urge governments to halt the unfolding crisis.

“Our hope lies in finding the empathy to acknowledge this terrible humanitarian situation.

“Sending love to the Palestinian and Jewish communities around the world who bear this burden heavier than most.”

Bella Hadid, who is Palestinian on her father's side, also tweeted her way onto the rappers list.

One of her tweets read: “While I have hopes and dreams for the Palestinians, none of them include the harm a Jewish person can suffer.

“Terrorizing innocent people is inconsistent with and does not benefit the Free Palestine movement. The idea that it does has fueled a painful, decades-long cycle of back-and-forth reprisals.

“No innocent citizen, Palestinian or Israeli, deserves to be victimized.”

Mia Khalifa, a Lebanese, has caused more controversy than the others with her views on the conflict. In fact, she even praised the Hamas terrorist immediately after the October 7 massacre in Israel.

Her tweet referred to the recording of the attack and read: “Can someone please tell the freedom fighters in Palestine to turn their phones around and film horizontally.”

She later apologized for her comments.

In response to the song in December, Khalifa wrote on to genocide in their own culture, they had to colonize something to get it to #1.'

But Harbu Darbu was welcomed with open arms by IDF forces with videos on YouTube and TikTok of soldiers driving tanks to the rhythm of the battle.

Israeli music promoter Hillel Wachs spoke to Israeli newspaper The Jerusulam Post and said: “There is a long tradition of some iconic song that comes out of a war, which becomes the song identified with that war.”

He further told the newspaper that Harbu Darbu could be that song.

Ness and Stilla say it's time to replace sadness with anger.

Nearly 30,000 Palestinians have been killed in the conflict, according to Gaza's health ministry.

Dua Lipa revealed that she has written a whopping 97 songs for her upcoming third studio album during an appearance Thursday on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live.

The 28-year-old pop star looked stunning in a long black dress as she promoted her song Training Season which will be released next week after singing it at the recent Grammy Awards.

Jimmy, 56, asked Dua about her writing process after she shared the lyrics to Training Season with the talk show.

“When you write these songs, do you write them down in a book?” Jimmy asked.

'Yes. Well, it was the first time I did it. I started writing for this album in 2021 and I just wanted to write down my ideas. So I went to CVS and just bought a random notebook. If I had known how important that book would have been, I might have gotten a fancier book,” Dua said, referring to the major pharmacy and general merchandise chain.

“Did you really do a CVS?” Jimmy asked.

“I like CVS,” Dua said. 'I'm obsessed with it. There's nothing like a CVS where you go in and buy a bunch of stuff you don't need.”

Jimmy then showed off the actual book that contains all of Dua's thoughts and lyrics for the album.

'It contains every song I wrote for this album. …I wrote 97 songs,” Dua said.

Jimmy was impressed with her work.

'Yes. And just because I have this, in a way it has now become a kind of relic of mine,” Dua said.

“Aren't you afraid this will be lost somehow?” Jimmy asked.

“Yes, petrified,” Dua admitted.

Jimmy joked that he might run away with the book.

“I'm sweating at the idea right now,” Dua said.

Jimmy said it was “pretty impressive” that Dua used a “really old-fashioned” technique instead of humming songs into her phone or just typing the lyrics.

'Yes, I loved it when I started, but then I couldn't stop. I feel very lucky to have it,” Dua said.

Jimmy asked if any of the 97 songs were terrible.

“Yes,” Dua replied. 'About 80 pieces.'

Jimmy joked that this makes it easier to shrink them.

'Yes, exactly. No, as soon as I write a song I know if it's good or not, or if it's almost good. Then I would rework it. With every song on this album, unlike any other record I've done, I rewrote it over and over again until I felt like it was perfect, which I didn't have the confidence to do on my previous records. Dua said.

“What I wrote that day was pretty much what everyone heard. And now, this time, I have a lot more confidence in myself as a songwriter, as an artist, how I want things to be and sound and look. And so I just went into it, and I dug a little deeper, and I changed things to the point where it felt perfect to me. And I'm proud of it,” Dua said.

Dua declined to share the release date or name of her upcoming album.

Training Season will be released on Thursday by Warner Records as the second single ahead of Dua's next album.

Dua released the album's first single Houdini earlier in November.

However, Lipa seemed to go too far while rehearsing for the Grammys.

The singer was caught in a video sliding across the ground on her knees.

This was accompanied by a compilation of Lipa knee sliding during shows.

Then, during the Grammy rehearsals, both legs were wrapped in padding.

And she grinned at the camera: “My knees are so f***ed!”

But Chelsea fans remained convinced that Lipa's idol must have been Stamford Bridge hero Hazard.

The Belgian, 33, won two Premier League titles and two Europa Leagues during a glorious seven-season spell in London.

Hazard scored just seven goals in 76 games over four seasons due to injury before retiring in October.

And Chelsea supporters couldn't resist comparing their hero to Lipa and her own knee problems.

One said: “She thinks she is Eden Hazard.”

Another stated: “I love you queen but you can never be him (Hazard).”

Other football fans also got involved.

One commented: “The shape is impeccable, Thierry Henry would be proud.”
