Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has shared a message of support for Kate Middleton following her shock cancer diagnosis.

Catherine, Princess of Wales, shared the news in a video shared online on Friday evening, UK time.

She explained that following her planned abdominal surgery in January, further tests had revealed the presence of cancer cells and she was now undergoing preventive chemotherapy treatment.

The princess, 42, did not reveal which form of cancer she was battling.

In a statement shared on X, formerly Twitter, Mr Albanese praised the royal family’s “extraordinary courage” shown in its public statement.

“My thoughts, and those of Australians, are with the Princess of Wales and her family following the news of her cancer diagnosis,” he said.

“The Princess of Wales has shown extraordinary courage today with her public statement expressing her concern for others.”

Kate’s announcement follows weeks of increasingly feverish speculation about her whereabouts, spurred by a heavily edited photo of the princess and her children shared by Kensington Palace to mark Mother’s Day in Britain.

The photo was published by most major news agencies but was killed within 24 hours, with the Associated Press saying it appeared the source had doctored the photo.

Kate later issued a statement saying that, like many amateur photographers, she enjoyed experimenting with editing and apologized for any confusion.

The princess did not comment on the speculation in her video and instead focused on those who had shown her family support as she began the early stages of treatment.

“I just wanted to take this opportunity to personally thank you for all the wonderful messages of support and for your understanding while I was recovering from surgery,” she said at the start of the clip.

‘It’s been an incredibly tough few months for our whole family, but I’ve had a fantastic medical team who have taken great care of me, for which I am so grateful.’

She said that while the diagnosis had come as a “shock” to her and her family, she felt “stronger every day” and asked for privacy as she continued treatment.

“I am doing well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirit,” she said.

‘Having William by my side is also a great source of comfort and reassurance. As does the love, support and kindness shown by so many of you. It means so much to both of us.

‘We hope you understand that we as a family now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery.”

She concluded with a message of support to others battling cancer, urging them not to lose hope.

“You’re not alone,” she said.

The leader of the Republic of Ireland, Leo Varadkar, resigned on Wednesday, sparking a political battle in the government following his announcement outside the Houses of Parliament in Dublin.

Mr Varadkar’s decision, which he attributed to both “personal and political” reasons, was unexpected as some members of his government were given only a few hours’ notice of his plans.

Mr Varadkar, a doctor and former health minister, first became taoiseach, or prime minister, in 2017, at a time when his Fine Gael party was still one of the country’s two dominant parties, a position it has held since had occupied the foundation almost continuously. of the Irish state.

However, public opinion has changed during his tenure and as Fine Gael’s popularity waned, his departure seemed inevitable, experts say. As Ireland grapples with what comes next for its government, here’s what you need to know.

Despite opposition calls for a general election, Mr Varadkar’s resignation does not mean the end of the current government.

Fine Gael, a centre-right party, currently governs in coalition with two other parties: Fianna Fáil, its long-time rival, and the Green Party. Under the terms of their power-sharing arrangement, it is up to Fine Gael to appoint a new leader, who will then become Prime Minister.

Due to the surprise nature of Mr Varadkar’s announcement, there was no immediate successor waiting in the wings, leading to an initial flurry of speculation about who could fill his role.

However, on Thursday afternoon it appeared that Simon Harris, the education minister, could compete for the undisputed role. He has spoken for years about his desire to one day lead the party and was nominated for the role on Thursday. Mr Harris, who is 37, would become the youngest ever taoiseach if he becomes leader of the party, surpassing Mr Varadkar, who initially took the leadership role at the age of 38. So far, it appears other members of the party are rallying. around him.

Other potential contenders included fellow party members Paschal Donohoe, the minister of public expenditure and reform, and Heather Humphreys, the minister of social protection. Both are long-time Fine Gael MPs, but both have said in the past 24 hours that they had no intention of putting themselves forward.

In his resignation speech, Mr Varadkar outlined an ambitious timeline for Fine Gael to appoint a new leader, saying he wanted a successor to be chosen before the party’s annual conference on April 6. That person would then become prime minister when parliament resumed. on April 9, after an Easter holiday.

However, the process of getting there could become complicated if more than one lawmaker contests the election.

One reason for the urgency to elect a new leader is that Ireland will hold local and European elections in June.

In addition, Ireland’s Dáil, the country’s popularly elected lower house, has a maximum term of office of five years, meaning national elections must be held before March 22, 2025. That means whoever replaces Mr Varadkar will serve as taoiseach for less money. than one year before elections are called.

Mr. Varadkar, the young, gay son of an Irish mother and an Indian father, once seemed an emblem of a new, more energetic and inclusive Ireland. Now he is the face of an increasingly unpopular establishment.

His resignation follows years of declining support for long-dominant parties Fine Gael, which slipped to third place at the last 2020 general election, and Fianna Fail. It crystallizes the perception that Irish politics is in a moment of change and uncertainty.

Meanwhile, Sinn Féin, once the political arm of the IRA, rose from its position as a fringe player to won the most votes in the last election. No party came close to a majority, forcing the formation of a coalition.

All major parties face political headwinds, while Ireland faces a number of domestic challenges. A serious housing shortage – partly caused by the failure of successive governments to invest in affordable housing – and a cost-of-living crisis have led to widespread frustration among the political establishment.

With the number of asylum seekers arriving in the country rising sharply, the government has faced an anti-immigration backlash, driven in part by far-right rhetoric online. This has increasingly turned into violence, with arsonists being targeted planned housing for asylum seekersand a violent riot in Dublin late last year that attracted international attention.

Concerns about immigration appear to favor independent candidates. Even Sinn Féin, still the most popular party in the polls, has seen that his support disappears. And with a general election looming, the country’s leading politicians must now grapple with how to tackle a deeply divisive issue without inflaming it further.

The action was taken against Shobha Karandlaje following a complaint filed by an employee of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

The DMK has also filed a complaint with the Election Commission of India over her comments.

FIR against Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje: The Madurai City Cyber Crime Police on Wednesday filed an FIR against Union Minister of State Shobha Karandlaje for her comments alleging that ‘the suspect involved in the March 1 blast at Rameshwaram Café in Bengaluru was from Tamil Nadu,” the officials said.

The action was taken against Shobha Karandlaje following a complaint filed by an employee of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). A case has been registered against Karandlaje under Sections 153, 153A, 505 (1) (b) and 505 (2) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), police said.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin condemned her comments and demanded legal action against her. “Strongly condemn the reckless statement of Union BJP Minister@ShobhaBJP. To make such claims, you must be an NIA officer or closely associated with the #RameshwaramCafeBlast. Clearly she does not have the authority for such claims. Both Tamilians and Kannadigas will reject this divisive rhetoric of the BJP,” CM Stalin said in a post on X on Tuesday evening.

“I also urge appropriate legal action against Shobha as he is a threat to peace, harmony and national unity. From the Prime Minister to the cadre, everyone in the BJP should immediately stop engaging in this dirty, divisive politics. ECI must take note of these hate speeches and take immediate strict action,” he added in his post.

Karnataka BJP leader Shobha Karandlaje faced a strong backlash for her comments before apologizing for the same on Tuesday, stating that her comments were “intended to shine light, not cast shadows.”

In a post on Still, I see that my comments have hurt some people – and for that I apologize. My comments were directed solely at those trained in the Krishnagiri forest, which was linked to the Rameshwaram Cafe blast. To everyone from Tamilnadu affected by this: From the bottom of my heart I ask for forgiveness. Furthermore, I withdraw my previous comments.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Shobha Karandlaje said that “a man comes from Tamil Nadu, undergoes training there and plants a bomb at Rameshwaram Cafe.”

The DMK also filed a complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday over its comments.

The DMK accused the Union minister of violating the Representation of the Peoples Act, 1951, and the Model Code of Conduct and asked the ECI to “take appropriate action against Karandlaje.”

DMK alleged that the statement was an attempt to promote feelings of enmity between the people of Karnataka and the people of Tamil Nadu.

At least four people were injured when a massive explosion took place at the Rameshwaram Cafe in Whitefield, Bengaluru.

Leo Varadkar, Ireland’s prime minister, said on Wednesday he would step down as leader of the country and his party, days after the defeat of two referendums favored by the coalition government.

Ireland will hold a general election early next year, and his decision will not trigger earlier elections, he said.

“I know this will come as a surprise to many people and a disappointment to some, but I hope you understand my decision,” Mr Varadkar told a news conference outside parliament in central Dublin.

He described his years as party leader as the “most fulfilling time” of his life. “There is never a good time to resign from high office,” he said. “However, this is as good a time as any.”

Citing both “personal and political” reasons, Mr Varadkar said he would step down from the party leadership with immediate effect and continue to serve as taoiseach until his party elects a new leader. He said this would be carried out before the planned Easter holidays, with a new leader expected when the government returns on April 16.

He added: “Politicians are human, and we have our limitations.”

He made the unexpected announcement shortly after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday morning. There was little indication of Mr Varadkar’s decision just days ago, when he visited the White House and met President Biden on St Patrick’s Day.

Mr Varadkar, who is gay and whose father is of Indian descent, broke a number of barriers when he became the country’s youngest-ever leader in 2017 and has long been seen as the new face of the Fine Gael party, which is currently in a is in crisis. coalition government with its old rival, Fianna Fáil.

After the coalition government came to power in June 2020, he served as deputy prime minister before resuming the leadership role as part of the parties’ power-sharing agreement.

Sunak noted that he is hopeful that Charles, 75, will make a “full recovery” after receiving “the treatment he needs.” He added: “That’s what we’re all hoping and praying for, and I’m obviously in regular contact with him and will continue to communicate with him as normal.”

A senior minister in Anthony Albanese’s government has been criticized for saying the US is not Australia’s most trusted security partner.

“I’m not sure the United States is our most trusted ally,” Commerce Minister Don Farrell said Monday in response to a question from Liberal Senator Claire Chandler.

“I would have said our closest international ally is New Zealand,” he said when speaking about the administration’s decision to restore funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency in Gaza, despite US President Joe Biden hasn’t done that.

When Mr Farrell’s response was met with laughter from senators from the Liberal and National parties, he added: ‘we are very close to the United States. I admit that openly.’

Liberal Senator Simon Birmingham said: “It beggars belief that a minister in the Foreign Affairs and Trade portfolio would be so keen to discuss Australia’s partnership with the US.”

Mr Birmingham, the opposition foreign affairs spokesman, pointed out that Mr Albanese had described the US as Australia’s “close ally” and “key strategic partner”.

“Senator Farrell’s statement is something I would expect from the Greens rather than from a senior minister,” he said.

“As much as we love our Kiwi cousins, it is the US we are asking to share their most sensitive defense technologies with us.

“Senator Farrell must set the record straight and apologize to the US for his errant and disturbing comments.”

Mr Farrell appeared to be stung by the ferocity of the reaction to his statement and later released a statement saying Mr Birmingham was “just playing juvenile political games”.

“Everyone knows the Kiwis are family,” he said.

“Everyone also knows that (the) United States is our closest ally, trusted strategic partner and largest mutual investment partner.”

But Mr Birmingham continued his attack on Tuesday morning, telling ABC radio he was surprised Mr Farrell was “wanting to rush so quickly when a phrase was used (by the Opposition) about the United States being our most trusted ally, to to try to talk that down’.

He said that under the Five Eyes arrangement (Australia, Canada, NZ, UK, US), the United States shares its most sensitive intelligence with Australia.

The mother of a soldier who died during parachute training has told a packed funeral service attended by the Prime Minister how her life changed forever when there was a knock on the door.

Lance Corporal Jack Fitzgibbon died on March 6 during special forces training at RAAF Base Richmond in Sydney’s north.

A funeral service was held at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cessnock, attended by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Defense Minister Richard Marles, Hunter MP Dan Repacholi and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton.

Streets and car parks in the city’s CBD were closed overnight in preparation for the full military funeral – with diggers lining the streets as his coffin passed.

The 33-year-old was the only son of former Rudd Defense Secretary Joel Fitzgibbon.

His mother Di Fitzgibbon told the service that her life changed when there was a knock on the door and that she would miss her son ‘with all my heart’.

“We have laughed so much over the past few weeks at your various exploits because your mother’s worries are no longer attached to them,” she said through tears.

Speaking at the funeral, a senior military official said the 33-year-old had died while serving his country after a decade in the ADF, including an operational deployment to Papua New Guinea and roles with the commando regiment.

“The nature of a soldier’s life is inherently dangerous and without risks and consequences,” he said.

“Jack will never be forgotten and his service as one of the most skilled signal operators will inspire future players.

“He leaves behind an honorable legacy and will be missed. Now rest, your service is done.”

The Ministry of Defense confirmed that an investigation had been launched into the cause of death and that all skydiving activities had been temporarily halted.

In a statement released through the department, Joel Fitzgibbon said the family was “heartbroken by the loss of our wonderful Jack.”

“Serving in the Special Forces was Jack’s dream job and we take some comfort in the fact that he died serving his country in an ADF uniform,” he said.

‘Jack was a dedicated, highly skilled and courageous soldier. He was an experienced paratrooper.

“Our lives will never be the same without Jack, but we will always be proud of him and his many achievements.”

Mr. Fitzgibbon served with the 2nd Commando Regiment, which is part of the Army’s Special Operations Command.

“Jack was loved for his courage and was known for his sense of humor and his service to country,” Brigadier General James Kidd told reporters the day after his death.
