A family-run construction company has been placed into voluntary administration just before its golden anniversary and owes creditors more than $20 million.

Project Co-ordination directors informed staff at their Canberra and Wollongong offices on Tuesday that they had appointed RSM Australia Partners as administrators.

The ACT and NSW-based company has delivered projects worth more than $120 million, while future projects worth more than $90 million are in doubt.

A majority of the company’s 67 employees, 38 based in the ACT and 29 in NSW, will be made redundant and receive an immediate payout.

The company was founded in 1975 and specialized in the construction and management of public and private buildings, leaving its directors faced with a ‘soul-destroying’ decision to hand over the business.

Family-run construction company Project Coordination (photo, workshop) has gone bankrupt in its 50th year of existence, owing creditors more than $20 million

Father and son directors, chairman Paul Murphy and chief executive Gavin, said they were ‘pained about this decision’ in a joint statement shortly after informing staff.

“Despite watching other construction companies collapse around us over the past year, we never imagined we would be one of them,” the statement read.

“We thought we had the resources, order book, capabilities and industry goodwill to get through this.

“Each of us has invested significant amounts of personal money into the business in an effort to control escalating labor, material and financing costs under fixed-price contracts and very tight margins.”

The statement revealed that the company had exhausted a range of options to raise capital last Friday, describing the situation as “unsustainable”.

Mr Murphy, one of the company’s original 25 employees, said he was devastated by the collapse of Project Coordination.

“The economic and regulatory environment in which construction companies now operate is more challenging than any other environment I have experienced in the last fifty years,” said Murphy.

‘Worse than the recessions of the 1980s and 1990s and the global financial crisis of 2007/2008. Nothing has been as bad as this.”

Project Coordination is exiting the industry after previously delivering more than 900 projects across the country worth more than $2.5 billion.

The company is leaving 14 workplaces across the ACT and NSW, valued at more than $120 million, in limbo and a further $90 million in future unrealized projects (pictured, workplace)

RSM’s Jonathon Colbran, Frank Lo Pilato and Brett Lord will oversee the company’s immediate future.

A statement from the financial and advisory accounting company said work at 10 locations in the ACT and four in NSW had ceased before their appointment.

The 14 construction sites are “at various stages of construction, from design and early works to some nearing completion.”

Mr Colbran said the company was financially hampered by “losses incurred from fixed-price contracts, combined with escalating costs for subcontractors, suppliers and operations”.

An initial investigation by RSM has identified “more than 200 creditors” still owed more than $20 million by Project Coordination, the majority of which was incurred less than two months ago.

  • Jacqui Lambie has called on Tasmania to scrap its new stadium plans
  • The new AFL team is dependent on the construction of a new stadium
  • But Ms Lambie argues the money could be better spent elsewhere

Jacqui Lambie has challenged AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon in an explosive performance on Monday night’s The Project.

Senator Lambie shared her thoughts on Tasmania’s new AFL team after unveiling the team name – The Devils – as well as the logo and colours.

While Ms Lambie is in favor of a new franchise originating from Tasmania in the AFL, she is strongly opposed to the construction of a new 23,000-seat stadium, which will cost the state government about $375 million.

The launch of the new team depends on the stadium being built, but Ms Lambie says the money would be better spent elsewhere.

“It’s great that we finally have an AFL team. There’s no doubt about that. I have made it very clear that all Tasmanians want an AFL team there, we have done that for years,” she began.

Jacqui Lambie gushed over the proposed new stadium to be built in Tasmania

She labeled a question from Sarah Harris as 'nonsense' on Monday evening

She labeled a question from Sarah Harris as ‘nonsense’ on Monday evening

“But what we can’t do and what we can’t afford is a brand new stadium with a roof on it. I’ve got guys living in tents with barely a roof over their heads, so I think Tasmanians have about had enough of this.

‘The lack of transparency, we have an increase in our hospitals, we have children who don’t go beyond group 10 of education, that goes down even further. There are a lot of problems in Tasmania at the moment and what it can’t afford is a brand new stadium with a roof over it.”

When host Sarah Harris told her the new stadium will create thousands of new jobs and have a maximum cost of $375 million, Ms Lambie exploded.

‘That’s nonsense! Okay, you can start believing what Tasmania’s Liberals tell you. They would have sold it from day one and they would have been extremely transparent.

“This came from the left of the field and was thrown at Tasmanians. Nobody said anything about a stadium. Next thing [you know] we have a stadium there with a roof.

‘No other state in Australia has been asked to roof a stadium. I mean, this is just absolutely amazing.

‘If Andrew Dillon wants to tell you what it’s like in Tasmania, hey mate, I’ll lock you up for a few weeks, come have a look in my backyard on the North West Coast and maybe you’ll get a bloody reality check, mate ’cause we’re in Tasmania can’t afford. That is it. End of story.

“We’d love to have one, I can tell you that, but I’m telling you we’re not as rich as Western Australia, we don’t have all that money coming in. There are so many issues in Tasmania where they should be prioritized over a stadium. It’s that simple.’

Waleed Aly argued that the huge costs could be seen as an investment that will make the state more money, which Ms Lambie disagrees with.

When then asked if she would be willing to see Tasmania lose its new AFL team license if the stadium plans fail, she challenged Dillon.

“I say to Tasmanians: we remain steadfast and you dare even try to take this team away from us. Go on, I challenge you.

‘But I challenge Andrew Dillon and his executives to come to Tasmania and do a reality check about how hard and difficult people are doing there at the moment.

“Throwing a stadium in their face with little transparency behind it is a joke in itself.”

Brahmaputra River in Assam: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday announced a major investment of over Rs 645 crores to develop 10 waterway projects under the flagship Sagarmala program of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The projects will be implemented with 100% financial support from the central government to upgrade terminals and river infrastructure along the Brahmaputra River (National Waterways 2) to boost connectivity and promote economic growth.

From the construction of slipways at strategic locations such as Maya Ghat in Dhubri district and Majuli district to the establishment of passenger terminals at Ghagor in North Lakhimpur district and Bahari in Barpeta district, each proposal has been carefully designed to improve connectivity and facilitating seamless transportation around the world. region.

Additional passenger terminals will be constructed at Goalpara, Guijan, Kurua, Dhubri, Disangmukh and Matmora to cater to the diverse needs of different districts within Assam. These ten projects will improve transport efficiency and stimulate industrial development and trade in the region.

Speaking on the occasion, Sonowal said, “Under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji, we are trying and trying to explore newer avenues and tap the immense potential of the country’s waterways. Brahmaputra (NW 2) has been the lifeline for the people of the Northeast and Assam. These ten new projects, which will be developed under the Government of India’s prestigious Sagarmala programme, are designed to boost connectivity, ease and improve public transport and fuel economic growth.”

With a focus on development of the Northeastern states, including Assam, projects worth over Rs 1,000 crore have been initiated under the Sagarmala programme. In Assam alone, projects worth over Rs 760 crore are currently underway.

The development of an eastern power grid on the Brahmaputra and Barak rivers, along with the Ganga and Sundarbans, will boost regional integration and trade with South Asia and East South Asia. Eastern Grid can unlock $49 billion in multilateral trade potential.

Tabuk Province, Saudi Arabia. A barren corner of the country, with little that’s apparent to recommend it as a destination but endless sunlight and abundant salt water.

Nevertheless, Mohammed bin Salman, crown prince and de facto leader of the region, saw this rocky landscape and envisaged something epic: a series of futuristic developments, space-age cities, and luxury resorts. A desert ‘utopia’ named Neom that encompasses an area of around 10,200 square miles and includes 12 named projects, from industrial port city Oxagon, the world’s largest floating structure, to Sindalah, a sea-horse-shaped resort island for the super-wealthy.

Then there’s The Line, a gleaming, mirrored city envisaged as a hermetically sealed wall cutting through the desert. The Neom project cannot be accused of a lack of ambition.

It is reported to be the crown prince’s attempt to diversify the Saudi economy, bolster tourism, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and establish the region as a technology and innovation hub on the world stage.

There are currently 12 named developments as part of the ambitious Neom project in Saudi Arabia. Above: The Oxagon, an industrial port that if completed will be the world’s largest floating structure

Reports of the cost of the project vary, starting at $500billion (£396billion) to estimates it will cost in excess of $1trillion (£792billion), if the 12 projects reach completion.

The Line is Neom’s flagship development. Announced in 2021, its sheer ambition sparked headlines – and controversy. The ‘vertical Manhattan’ is intended to be 170 kilometres long (105 miles), comprised of two 500-metre-tall (1,640ft) parallel towers that house nine million residents.

Each of the dual towers will feature mirrored facades, and include residential and business properties. Walkways will connect the structures, while a high-speed train will run beneath.

Neom covers an area of 10,200 square miles, with the Gulf of Aqaba to the west and the Red Sea to the south

There will be no roads or cars. Daily essentials are planned to be within a five-minute walk for residents. Volocopters, delivery drones and robot servants will be on hand to serve. Designers say it will run entirely on renewable energy.

When completed, it will be the largest megastructure in the world.

Some of the proposed details are eye-catching, involving technology that has not yet been developed in some cases.

Rain-starved desert will be addressed with cloud-seeding machines to promote precipitation. There are plans for on-site healthcare scientists who modify residents’ genes to make them stronger, an artificial moon lighting the sky, and plans for The Line to have the highest rate of Michelin-starred restaurants per inhabitant.

Meanwhile, the design for Aquellum sounds vaguely akin to the lair of a Bond villain: per Neom’s website, it will be an ‘ultra-luxury upside-down skyscraper’ completely encased in a mountain, undetectable to anyone outside. Its inhabitants will access their home from a secret entrance via the Aqaba coast, on the Red Sea.

According to Neom, once inside Aquellum, ‘a dynamic boulevard winds through the courtyard, connecting diverse social spaces, world-class hospitality, immersive arts, events, shopping and dining. A signature space, dubbed ‘The Generator’, houses unique research labs for disruptors, innovators, and creative thinkers, offering a platform where the future is reimagined.

The Neom site adds: ‘An omnidirectional internal transit system facilitates easy access to upper floors, transporting residents and visitors to their homes and hotels, ascending to rooftop gardens with breathtaking coastal views.’

Sindalah is an 840,000-square-metre man-made island in the shape of a seahorse, being developed into a resort aimed to serve the yachting community (and ultra-wealthy). When completed it shall boast an 86-berth marina and yacht club. It is predicted to be the first completed project, in 2025.

The second project anticipated to reach completion is Trojena, set to be operational in 2026. It’s being built atop Tabuk, the region’s tallest mountain range.

This tourism destination will include the first major outdoor skiing destination in the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations and will host the 2029 Asian Winter Games.

According to Neom, it will ‘showcase the next generation of luxury living, with a limited and exclusive offering of apartments, chalets, mansions and ultra-luxury mansions that boast unparalleled privacy, inspirational architecture and a seamless journey with nature’.

The remaining projects are Leyja, a nature reserve; Utamo, an arts and entertainment centre; Norlana, a coastal residential area; Xaynor, a beach club; Zardun, an eco-tourism resort; Epicon, a luxury tourist resort; and Siranna, a hexagonal luxury resort.

There is concern that Neom won’t be the sustainable mecca it is being sold as.

In a study of potential biological conservation issues for 2024, Science Direct raised concerns mirrored megastructure The Line is ‘likely to pose a substantial risk to migratory species, particularly passerine birds’. Reflective surfaces are identified as one of the biggest causes of bird deaths each year.

The report says: ‘The magnitude of The Line may pose a novel threat to the eastern populations of the estimated 2.1billion migratory birds of more than 100 species that migrate from Europe to Africa in autumn each year, for which this area forms a bottleneck.’

Environmental campaigners are sceptical, as well, declaring claims for The Line’s planned sustainability as ‘greenwashing’. Saudi Arabia is the second largest oil producer in the world.

Amnesty International has also voiced alarm at the project, particularly regarding the forced displacement of members of the region’s Howeitat tribe to accommodate the development. Some 20,000 Saudis have been moved so far.

In 2023, the non-government organisation ALQST, which works to protect Saudis against human rights violations, reported that three members of the Howeitat tribe had been sentenced to death for criticising the displacements.
