Senator Sherrod Brown, Democrat of Ohio, has always had the luxury of running for election for his party in remarkably good years. He won his seat in 2006, amid opposition to the Iraq War, won reelection in 2012, the last time a Democrat took over the state, and did so again in 2018, amid a national reckoning over Donald’s presidency J Trump.

His 2024 campaign will be different, and most likely the toughest of his career, with a Republican Party determined to win his seat and a Democratic president hanging on him like one of his signature rumpled suits. In an election year when control of the Senate hinges on the Democratic Party’s ability to win every competitive race, there is an enormous weight on the slumped shoulders of the famously confused 71-year-old.

“I’m fighting for the people of Ohio,” Mr. Brown said in an interview Wednesday. “There’s a reason I’m winning in a state that’s a little more Republican.”

Mr. Brown’s tousled hair and gravelly voice have appealed to working-class voters since he was elected Ohio secretary of state in 1982. His arms may be clutched tightly around his chest, but he exudes a casual confidence that he can win again in a tough fight. red Ohio, where he is the last Democrat to hold statewide office.

But beneath that image there are problems. On Monday, he had just received a message of support from the 100,000-strong Ohio State Building and Construction Trades Council when a retired mason, Jeff King, pulled him aside in a weathered union hall in Dayton.

Mr. Brown has had numerous successes, Mr. King, who made the trip from his hometown of Cincinnati, told the senator. But, he wondered, would workers in a blue-collar state that twice delivered Trump victories of eight percentage points understand who should get the credit?

“That’s the mission,” Mr. Brown said, leaning forward. “They don’t know enough.”

The party and its union allies have made the re-election of Ohio’s senior senator their top priority — “the absolute top,” said Lee Saunders, the president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and the chairman of the AFL. The CIO Political Committee.

The election could get in Mr. Brown’s way. With Trump’s support — and a push from a Democratic super PAC — Democrats’ Republican opponent Bernie Moreno easily prevailed in the Republican Senate primaries on Tuesday, handing the incumbent president a setback with dizzying wealth, little political experience and the imprimatur. from a former president who could prompt some voters to split their tickets.

The next day, the Biden administration announced an $8.5 billion deal to finance Intel Corporation’s semiconductor production, much of it destined for Ohio, thanks to legislation that Mr. Brown helped secure. Thanks to Mr. Brown, that law, the Chips and Science Act, requires so-called project labor agreements to be entered into between management and union workers before construction of the plants can begin. So 7,000 union workers will be employed in the huge Intel complex outside Columbus.

On Wednesday, the government finalized stringent new emissions standards for cars and trucks that would increase electric vehicle production at the Stellantis Jeep complex in Toledo and car battery factories around Youngstown.

Finally, construction should begin around election time on a long-sought replacement for the Brent Spence Bridge, connecting Cincinnati to the Kentucky suburbs. That too was partly supplied by Mr Brown.

Yet Republicans are most confident for a much simpler reason: political seriousness. In March polls, Mr. Trump leads Mr. Biden in Ohio by as few as nine percentage points and as many as 18 percentage points. Mr. Brown will most likely lead Mr. Biden in the state, Republicans say, but not by enough to win.

“We now have the opportunity to retire the old commission,” Mr. Moreno proclaimed at his victory party on Tuesday, referring to Mr. Brown.

In an interview on Wednesday, Mr. Brown emphasized that his toughest Senate race was his first, when he unseated Mike DeWine, who went on to win two terms as Ohio’s governor.

And Mr. DeWine reaffirmed that confidence Monday night, imploring Columbus voters to cast their votes for the candidate he thought could defeat Mr. Brown, State Senator Matt Dolan.

“This isn’t going to be an easy race, folks,” Mr. DeWine advised at the Hey Hey Bar & Grill in Columbus’s German Village. “I bumped into this guy.”

This year it could be different.

“Nothing can save Sherrod Brown from voting with Joe Biden 99 percent of the time,” Moreno said.

Compared to Mr. Moreno, a political newcomer, Mr. Brown is a fixture in Ohio. “People just know I’m standing up for them,” he said.

Two years ago, Tim Ryan, then a U.S. representative, ran for Senate as a Mahoning Valley Democrat cut from Mr. Brown’s mold. Although he ran a campaign that is almost universally praised as a textbook one, he lost to J.D. Vance by six percentage points.

But Mr. Ryan said he lacked something Mr. Brown has: a steady identity across the state. To win as a Democrat in Ohio, he said, “all you have to do is have the name Sherrod Brown.”

This fight will be about Mr. Moreno’s attempt to define Mr. Brown’s policy agenda — and the Democrat removing Mr. Biden’s name from it. Mr. Brown talks about his action to save more than 1,460 union officials’ pensions in Ohio through the Butch Lewis Act, a retirement provision named in memory of an Ohio teamster and included in the massive Covid relief bill, the American Rescue Plan.

He tells the audience about his role in the massive bill signed by Mr. Biden that expanded veterans health care to former service members exposed to toxic “burn pits” in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is also named after an Ohioan, Sgt. First Class Heath Robinson, who died of lung cancer at age 39.

He speaks glowingly about the CHIPS Act, which would ensure that the two new semiconductor factories being built in Ohio with federal money will employ union-trained workers.

But even he said he understood the road ahead, especially when Mr. Moreno called his record “job-killing, Green New Deal radicalism.”

“They know the performance,” Mr Brown said. “They just don’t really know who did it.”

The sitting president will almost certainly be able to match the Republicans dollar for dollar and then some. Between the loyalty he built in the labor movement and corporate interests with cases before the Senate Banking Committee, which he chairs, Mr. Brown has built a formidable war chest: $33.5 million raised since 2019, and $13.5 million dollar cash on hand at the end of last month.

Mr. Moreno emerged from a brutal three-way primary with $2.4 million in cash, according to federal campaign finance records from late February.

And Mr. Brown said that beneath Ohio’s pro-Trump tilt was a state that was less conservative than Republicans believe. Last August, Ohioans crushed a ballot measure designed by Republicans to make it more difficult for future ballot measures, a transparent attempt to defeat an upcoming vote on abortion rights. Three months later, they enshrined the right to abortion in the state constitution by 13 percentage points. On the same day, they voted to legalize marijuana – by 14 points.

“That should scare them,” Mr. Brown said of his Republican opponents. “They have to figure out how to win over those voters.”

Exactly how much Mr. Brown can continue to perform against national Democrats is a subject of debate in Ohio. David Pepper, a former chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party, said the senator outperformed the rest of the Democratic ticket by more than 10 percentage points in 2018, beating Republican James B. Renacci by 7 percentage points when Mr. DeWine defeated his Democratic opponent defeated. ahead of Governor Richard Cordray by 3.7 points.

“The question is: To what extent is Biden competing here?” said David Pepper, a former chairman of the Democratic Party of Ohio. “If he competes hard, he keeps it within reach of Brown.”

In the union hall of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 82 in Dayton, it was impossible to find anyone who was not firmly in Mr. Brown’s camp.

“As many pensions as he has saved, absolutely” he will win, said David Bruce, the chairman of the Dayton Building Trades Council.

But beneath the bravado was a recognition of the work ahead.

“That’s our fight,” said retired bricklayer Mr. King, citing the flood of right-wing information consumed by many of his union brethren. “As union leaders, we are called to better communicate our message. The problem is that we are masons. We do not understand the messages.”

On Capitol Hill, the only rules that really matter are the ones that a majority of lawmakers are willing to enforce. So as Congress races to finalize a $1.2 trillion spending package that will almost certainly become law in the coming days, lawmakers are weighing several shortcuts and tricks to avoid a partial government shutdown after midnight Friday. to prevent.

Although a short closure during the weekend would not be as disruptive as a closure during the work week, it could still have consequences.

“If Republicans and Democrats continue to work together in good faith to fund the government, I hope we are just days away from completing the appropriations process,” said Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York and Majority Leader. Wednesday. “The job is not done yet, but we are very close.”

Here are the ways congressional leaders must break, bend or otherwise twist the rules to get the legislation done before 12:01 a.m. Saturday morning, when federal funding for half the government threatens to expire.

For starters, Republican leaders will almost certainly try to waive a self-imposed rule requiring lawmakers to be given at least 72 hours to review legislation before voting on it. The rule is a clear cut with many Republican conservatives in the House of Representatives who say they have been forced many times in the past to vote for major bills as take-it-or-leave-it proposals, without sufficient time to to process them, to later discover objectionable proposals. provisions.

“If you are a Republican who plans to vote for this omnibus spending package, insist that you read it AT LEAST 72 hours, because you will own every dollar of increased spending, every disastrous Biden policy that funds,” said Representative Bob Good. Republican of Virginia and leader of the far-right Freedom Caucus, wrote on social media.

But because time is running out and the legislative text has not yet been made public as of Wednesday afternoon, it would be impossible to consider and adopt the legislation before the deadline if the rule were to be upheld.

Republicans dissatisfied that they weren’t given enough time to push through the legislation might oppose abandoning the rule, but some of those same Republicans admit they are unlikely to support the spending package anyway. Overriding the rule, however, is likely to fuel more right-wing resentment over Speaker Mike Johnson’s handling of spending issues.

Opposition over the right to pass the spending bills has forced Mr Johnson to deal with them under a special procedure that prevents opponents from blocking the vote on the legislation. The far right has used a previously rare tactic to oppose the “rule” of their own party by bringing the spending bills to the floor, a break from House tradition.

As a result, Mr Johnson has brought up the spending legislation under what is known as ‘suspension of the rules’. The process, as the name suggests, invalidates the regular rules of the House, preventing brief debates in the chamber and blocking efforts to amend the bills.

But as a special shortcut typically used for consensus legislation, it would require a supermajority of two-thirds of the House of Representatives — 290 if everyone is present — to pass. Significant numbers of Democrats will have to join Republicans in passing the measure, as dozens of Republicans will vote against any spending plan.

Under internal rules that House Republicans approved at the start of Congress last year, this maneuver cannot be used for a bill estimated to cost more than $100 billion unless the spending to finance it lowers. But a Republican Party official said a spending bill — even one that would cost 10 times as much — could not violate the rule because the Congressional Budget Office does not provide cost estimates for it.

Once the legislation is approved by the House of Representatives, it will face a new set of hurdles in the Senate, which typically can only be bypassed if all 100 members agree — an unlikely event given conservative opposition to the spending package.

When the House is ready, Mr. Schumer will move as quickly as possible to bring the legislation to the floor. He will then take steps to limit debate and block amendments that could destroy the agreement. Once that clock starts, the Senate must wait at least a day before taking up the motion to end debate on the package. If successful, the Senate could spend up to 30 hours considering the bill, potentially delaying debate until after the weekend.

In exchange for speeding up the process, members of the Senate’s right-wing Republican bloc will likely demand the chance to offer some amendments, as they did when the first spending package was passed. A combination of Republicans and Democrats defeated them all and would have to do so again, as approval of an amendment would require the measure to be sent back to the House of Representatives.

One factor contributing to faster passage through the Senate is that both the Senate and House of Representatives will go on a two-week Easter break once the legislation is approved. The desire to leave the city could reduce opposition and allow the Senate to act quickly if opponents accept they have no real option to block its passage.

If it became clear that the legislation would stall in the Senate as the shutdown deadline approached, Congress could also approve a short-term patch to buy more time. But Senate and House leaders see the end near in the uphill battle to pass legislation to fund the government through September. They want to keep the pressure on.

And the last time Congress missed a Friday deadline to pass a major spending package earlier this month, President Biden didn’t sign it until the next day, technically allowing for a brief shutdown that went unnoticed.

United loaned Sancho out to former club Borussia Dortmund in January so he could get some playing time.

Ten Hag is yet to open the door for a return to Old Trafford for the £73million man, who he is reportedly willing to use as a makeweight to sign Dortmund chief Donyell Malen.

That is according to Imagewho claim United are interested in a possible ‘swap deal’ between the pair.

However, the German newspaper claims that Arsenal and Liverpool are also sniffing around for the Dutch international.

The 25-year-old Malen has been in excellent form for Dortmund this season. He scored 13 goals and recorded five assists in a total of 33 games. matches.

The 23-year-old Sancho has scored once and provided one assist in his nine Bundesliga games so far in his second stint with the black and yellow.

Sancho’s contract with Manchester United expires in the summer summer from 2026, although the Red Devils have the option to extend this for another year.

But judging by Ten Hag’s recent claim that the club had problems with the winger before the boss arrived, it is likely that his future is far from Old Trafford.

Brentford are also interested and Rovers hope to stay in the Championship and collect a huge fee when clubs come calling, but relegation could change the picture.

John Eustace’s side are currently 17th in the second tier with eight games remaining.

Saturday’s goalless draw at Middlesbrough leaves Blackburn three points above the drop zone.

Despite not finding the target this weekend, Szmodics remains at the top of the scoring list.

The 28-year-old has scored 21 goals in 36 league games and three assists this season.

He also scored six goals in three FA Cup games for Blackburn as they reached the fifth round of the competition.

Fulham’s interest comes amid a revival in the form of striker Rodrigo Muniz.

The Brazilian has scored seven goals in his last seven Premier League matches after his brace against Tottenham on Saturday.

The skies above Cheltenham may not yet be showing any signs of sunshine, but that didn’t appear to dampen the spirits of those entering the racecourse on the final day of the Gloucestershire meet.

Alongside classic spectator attire – including neutral macs, knee-high riding boots and wide-brimmed fedoras galore, there were plenty of racegoers determined to get themselves noticed in the style stakes.

The last day of the four-day race meet, which originated in 1860, saw a pair of male spectators in dazzling gold suits, clearing a nod to the famous Gold Cup that will be handed out later today.

Princess Anne led the royals on Friday; the 73-year-old, who also attended on Thursday, cut an elegant figure in a bright red coat, teamed with black suede boots and a brown fur hat.  The Princess Royal was accompanied by her husband Sir Tim Laurence.

Also in attendance was Mike and Zara Tindall, again back for more racing after attending the event on Thursday too.

This week she took to Instagram to tell fans she was disappointed not to attend every day of the event, but has been spending quality time with her boyfriend – BrewDog James Watt – after moving in together.

Guests at this year’s meet have hiked up their hemlines, chugged beer and Red Bull and ditched Jimmy Choos for thigh high boots and trainers in a move that has lead to comparisons with Aintree, the Merseyside meet famed for it’s rowdy crowds and street style.

Last year, the Jockey Club scrapped its strict dress code at its racecourses in the hopes of encouraging a younger crowd to racing events, with jeans and trainers no longer looked down upon, and ‘come dressed to feel your best’ guidance in place.

The formal dress codes – which often included a jacket and tie – were dropped in an effort to make horseracing more ‘accessible and inclusive’, the Jockey Club said in an announcement.

This means trainers, tracksuits and ripped jeans are now allowed and punters so far have seemed to take advantage of this.

While Cheltenham is owned by the Jockey Club, the course never had a formal dress code.

However, in previous years men would wear suits and women would wear smart dresses and heels, while jeans and trainers were usually avoided.

But this year, stilettos have been traded in for chunky boots, and traditional long dresses have been hiked up. Noughties fashion seemed to be in vogue, with people opting for rara skirts and blazers.

For today’s race meeting, The Paddy Power Stayer’s Hurdle is the headline act at 15:30 where Teahupoo is hoping to go a couple of places better than last season when denied by stablemate Sire Du Berlais who also lines up again.

It is the most open of the Festival’s feature races with winners tough to predict.

Three previous Stayers’ Hurdle winners line up — Paisley Park, Flooring Porter, who has twice been successful, and last year’s scorer Sire Du Berlais.

Gordon Elliott’s Teahupoo finished third last year and returns a more mature and complete athlete at the age of seven, the age of five of the past seven winners.

Which billionaire space company will go to the moon first: Elon Musk’s SpaceX or Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin?

At first glance, SpaceX appears to have a huge lead. It is about to launch Starship’s third test flight. A variant of the Starship is planned to take NASA astronauts to the moon’s surface as early as September 2026.

Blue Origin, on the other hand, has not yet put anything into orbit, and its contract with NASA for a lunar lander for astronauts is for a mission that will launch in 2030.

But Blue Origin can still get there first. SpaceX faces big challenges with Starship, which is the size of a 16-story building, while Blue Origin plans to send a smaller cargo lander to the moon by the end of next year.

“We expect this lander to land on the moon in 12 to 16 months,” said John Couluris, senior vice president of lunar permanence at Blue Origin, during an interview in the CBS News program “60 Minutes” this month.

The initial launch of the Mark 1 version of the Blue Moon lander is what Blue Origin calls a “pathfinder” to test technologies such as the BE-7 engine, flight computers, avionics and power systems – the same systems that will be used in the much larger Mark 2 lander that will take astronauts to the moon’s surface.

The Mark 1 lander can carry up to three tons of cargo to the lunar surface, but will be small enough to fit on one of Blue Origin’s New Glenn rockets. The New Glenn has yet to fly, but the company says its debut voyage will take place later this year.

After launching Blue Moon Mark 1 into an orbit about 125 miles (200 kilometers) above Earth’s surface, the lander’s BE-7 engine will propel it toward the moon, slow it down to orbit the moon, and then propel it toward landing lead on the surface.

The smaller size means that, unlike Starship, the Mark 1 lander does not need to be refueled before leaving Earth orbit. Demonstrating refueling technology in orbit will be a key test to validate Starship’s design. Refueling will also be required for the Blue Moon Mark 2 lander.

Final tips

A word from our racing guru Templegate on today’s race, following Matt Chapman.

Matt Chapman and Templegate’s Cheltenham Festival day three tips

ICYMI

The big news this morning was that Sir Gino has been withdrawn from tomorrow’s Triumph Hurdle.

A real shame for Nicky Henderson, whose week goes from incredibly bad to somehow worse.

More about that story here

Is Nicholl at it again?

Paul Nicholls didn’t have a great day yesterday, to put it mildly.

But the champion trainer has some very real chances to get on the board today and will hope Stay Away Fay’s poor performance yesterday doesn’t affect his runners today.

Speaking about Ginny’s Destiny in the 2.10, he told Betfair: “He didn’t achieve what we hoped over fences, so he was back over fences last time at Chepstow, where he qualified for this final. I’ll try him for the first time trying out blinders, which should help make him a little bit sharper. He can handle the conditions and has a sporting chance.”

Five flutter

Here at Sun Racing we know that the majority of gamblers do this casually and will not place big bets.

So we look for a little value and get big rewards for smaller bets.

Here’s what the team came up with today.

SMALL CHANCE – current 28/1 recording!

RAPPER (5.30): He got straight back to his best when second in good company at Ascot last time and is on a good run on the trip and track that really suits him.

EVERY WAY THIEF

CUTHBERT DIBBLE (2.10): He is in great form for the Twiston-Davies team and is loving this distance. He has every chance after winning his last three matches.

NOBLES (3.30): Won the Cleeve Hurdle nicely last time and has strong claims in the Stayers’.

Royal arrival

Zara and Mike Tindall have arrived for day three.

Extravagant headpieces, thigh-skimming hemlines and sky-high heels were in vogue for Cheltenham’s Style Wednesday today.

The second day of the race meet, which has long been fondly referred to as Ladies Day, marked their first Style Wednesday today, with a fashion competition for both men and women

Day two of the prestigious four-day event is known for attracting a host of royals and celebrities alike as they show off their sartorial prowess while enjoying a day out at the races in Gloucestershire.

One racegoer commanded attention in a sunshine yellow blazer and feather headpiece.

While another ensured all eyes were on her in a silky kimono with dragon print, corset and bow hat.

Well-heeled guests included Queen Camilla and her son, Tom Parker-Bowles, who were sure to enjoy the festivities.

Camilla stunned in a bottle green coat and fur hat.

Meanwhile,   Zara and Mike Tindall, as well as Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank were also in attendance.

Charlotte Hawkins and Jade Holland Cooper were among other guests at the event.

While the event is no longer known as Ladies Day, it’s clear revellers still make the same amount of effort.

Some excited racegoers even start planning their outfits for the popular occasion six or so months in advance.

The famous event that was once called Ladies Day has been ‘downgraded’ to Style Wednesday, with the Jockey Club, which runs 15 courses across the UK, also ditching the Best Dressed competition.

Instead, the day now includes the Slow Fashion awards, open to both men and women, which ‘celebrates vintage and borrowed items, as well as investment pieces’.

A spokesperson for Cheltenham Racecourse said: ‘This year we re-launched day two of The Festival as Style Wednesday to celebrate “fast horses, slow fashion”, encouraging racegoers to make more sustainable fashion choices, showcasing their unique and personal style, and to share the stories behind their amazing outfits with friends, family and on social media.

‘This includes re-wearing outfits they already have in their wardrobes, purchasing timeless garments to wear again and again and also buying from retailers specialising in pre-loved clothing.’

Commenting on the change, The Daily Mail’s Nadine Dorries said in her latest column: ‘I looked at the programme and saw, with no fanfare or warning, that Ladies Day at Cheltenham appears to have been downgraded to Style Wednesday.

‘I’m assuming this is some sort of woke nod from the Jockey Club to the powerful trans lobby.

‘If that’s the case, the Jockey Club might like to consider who exactly will be attending – and who it is they are now offending.’

The second day of the four-day festival hasn’t officially been labelled Ladies Day since 2018; last year it was billed as Festival Wednesday.

But fans on X were equally disappointed with the move to rebrand the second day as ‘Style Wednesday’, with one person writing: ‘Who on earth gets paid to come up with this nonsense? Oh for the days when racing was felt worthy enough on its own.’

Another said: ‘Style Wednesday? Jesus wept. It’s Ladies Day,’ while a third added: ‘Game is in the gutter.’

Traditional morning dress or formal day wear is also still required in the Queen Elizabeth II Stand on Derby Day.

Nevin Truesdale, Chief Executive at The Jockey Club, said: ‘Horseracing has always been a sport enjoyed by people from all different backgrounds and it’s really important to us to be accessible and inclusive.

‘We hope that by no longer placing an expectation upon people of what they should and shouldn’t wear we can help highlight that racing really is for everyone.

‘For those who visit our venues, a day at the races is all about spending quality leisure time with friends and family and we believe people enjoy themselves best when they feel relaxed. A major part of that is wearing clothing which you are comfortable in.

‘For those who visit our venues, a day at the races is all about spending quality leisure time with friends and family and we believe people enjoy themselves best when they feel relaxed. A major part of that is wearing clothing which you are comfortable in.

‘So, when we reviewed this area of the raceday experience, it has been clear to us that enforcing a dress code seems rather outdated in the 21st Century in the eyes of many of our racegoers.

‘Of course that doesn’t mean we are discouraging people from dressing up for a day at the races if they want to.

‘This is about giving people a choice and the opportunity to come racing dressed however they feel most comfortable and confident, while also bearing in mind the challenges regularly presented by the British weather.

In the past, entry into some enclosures has required the wearing of a jacket and tie while sporting trainers has also been frowned upon.

Truesdale added that the new rules should remove any ‘ambiguity or uncertainty’ about how people had to dress at the track.

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is the biggest race of the week which holds one of the biggest prize pots in the sport.

Today’s big Cross Country Chase has been canceled entirely after a circuit inspection.

The hope was to hold the race on Friday if conditions had not improved this morning.

But the Jockey Club has decided to cancel the race altogether as the weather is unlikely to improve.

The knock-on effect of that decision means that the times of four races will be changed, with the first starting fifteen minutes later than planned.

A statement read: “After 11mm of rain yesterday there has been no improvement in conditions on the Cross-Country course and with parts of the circuit unrideable the Glenfarclas Cross-Country Chase has unfortunately been abandoned.

“Forecasts for the remainder of the week remain uncertain, with further showers likely on both Thursday and Friday.

“There will therefore be insufficient improvement in the Cross-Country course on Friday 15 March and it has been decided not to reschedule the Glenfarclas Cross-Country Chase at The Festival.

“As a result of the cancellation of the 5th race today, the revised race times for Wednesday March 13 are as follows:

“Race 1: 1345, Race 2: 1430, Race 3: 1515, Race 4: 1600, Race 5: NA, Race 6: 1650, Race 7: 1730.

Gordon Elliott’s Delta work had rocketed to the top of the Cross Country betting as the ground at Cheltenham was soaked.

His defending champion, who was around 2-1, would face former Gold Cup winner Minella Indo.

Rachael Blackmore, who bagged the first winner on day one, would ride Indo, who had long been the favorite for the post.

Elliott, who loves this race, would also saddle second favorite Coko Beach, while Willie Mullins, who looks set to bash the bookmakers again, was set to run Stattler.

The Mullins family matriarch was a leading figure in the sport decades before her death.

Maureen came from a farming family in Ireland and was interested in horses from an early age.

In 1954 she married famous Irish trainer Paddy Mullins, who was responsible for six successes at the Cheltenham Festival, assisted by Maureen.

They ran their operation together from Goresbridge, Co Kilkenny for over 50 years before Paddy died in 2010.

She also rode herself and won the women’s event at Gowran Park in 1982.

Maureen subsequently became a director and shareholder of Kilkenny Racecourse.

She and Paddy had five children together; Sandra, Willie, George, Tony and Tom.

All five rode winners as jockeys, while Willie in particular became a legendary trainer, following in the footsteps of his parents.

Even in her final years she remained a regular at racing events.

In 2016 she received an award for her contribution to the sport from Horse Racing Ireland.

Maureen remained involved in racing until her death.

Just hours before her death, she even placed her last bet of €20 on grandson Charlie.

Her bet came in and Charlie was victorious on a horse trained by Willie.

In January this year she opened a new weighing room in Gowran Park.

But shortly afterwards she had a bout of “pneumonia or flu”.

SunSport’s Matt Chapman has hailed Maureen as an “absolute legend”.

In her honour, today’s race at 5.30pm in Cheltenham has been named the Maureen Mullins National Hunt Steeple Chase Challenge Cup.
