Britain’s ruling Conservative Party was under pressure Tuesday to return more than 10 million pounds to a donor who reportedly said that Diane Abbott, a leading lawmaker, should be “shot” and that by looking at her he was “killing all black women.” wanted to hate. ”

According to a study by The Guardian NewspaperHealthcare technology entrepreneur Frank Hester made these comments in 2019 during a meeting at the offices of his company, The Phoenix Partnership. He has apologized but has not confirmed the Guardian’s account of what he said.

Mr Hester said on Monday that he “accepts that he was rude about Diane Abbot at a private meeting several years ago, but that his criticism had nothing to do with her gender or skin colour,” in a rack released by his firm for misspelling her last name.

The statement added that he had called Ms Abbott twice “to attempt to apologize directly for the pain he has caused her, and that he deeply regrets his comments”, and that he “wanted to make it clear that he considers racism a poison’. which has no place in public life.”

According to the Guardian, Mr Hester said at the meeting: “It’s like you’re trying not to be racist but you see Diane Abbott on the TV and you think, I hate it, you just want to hate all black women because she’s there. , and I don’t hate black women at all, but I think she should be shot.

The first black woman elected to parliament, Ms Abbott, 70, is a prominent figure in British politics and spoke on home affairs for the opposition Labor party under its previous leader, Jeremy Corbyn.

In anticipation of this, she was suspended from the Labor Party in Parliament last year an investigation into a letter she wrote to a newspaperr calling for racism against black people to be distinguished from prejudice against other groups.

In a statement published on TuesdayMs Abbott described Mr Hester’s reported comments about her as ‘frightening’.

“I am a single woman and that makes me vulnerable anyway. But to hear someone talk like that is disturbing,” she said, adding that the fact that two MPs “have been murdered in recent years makes statements like this all the more alarming.”

One Labor MP, Jo Cox, was Murdered in 2016 by a right-wing extremist, and David Amess, a Conservative MP, was murdered in 2021 by a radical Islamist who opposed British airstrikes on Islamic State.

Mr Hester has recently become the Conservative Party’s biggest donor gave £5 million to the party, bringing his total donations to £10 million in a year. With a general election expected later this year, the party resisted pressure on Tuesday to return the money.

A senior Conservative Party MP and minister, Mel Stride, told broadcasters that Mr Hester’s alleged comments were “clearly wrong” but that people should “move on”.

That could not allay the criticism from opposition politicians. Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labor Party, described the reported comments as “abhorrent” and told broadcaster ITV that Ms Abbott had been a “trailblazer” who has “probably faced more abuse over the years than any other politician then. sustainable basis.”

Mr Hester appeared to be “pretending that what was said wasn’t racist or had anything to do with her being a woman,” Mr Starmer said, adding: “I don’t believe in that, I’m afraid , and I think it’s time for the Tory party to call it out and pay back the money.”

Earlier, speaking in parliamentWes Streeting, a senior Labor MP, said the reported comments used “completely disgusting, racist and inflammatory language which has no place in our politics and public life.” Mr Streeting called on the Conservatives to return donations from Mr Hester, saying that “if they have any integrity at all they will return every penny.”

Some Conservative lawmakers were also critical, including Kwasi Kwarteng, who was briefly finance minister in the short-lived government of former Prime Minister Liz Truss. Mr Kwarteng told the BBC that the comments were “clearly racist and clearly sexist”.

Recent Conservative governments have done so contained a number of strikingly diverse cabinets and the party is led by Rishi Sunak, Britain’s first non-white prime minister.

But the party recently suspended one of its former lawmakers, Lee Anderson, after he claimed that ‘Islamists’ had gained control from the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, a Labor politician. On Monday, Mr. Anderson formally left the Conservative Party and joined Reform UK, the small right-wing successor to the Brexit Party once led by Nigel Farage, which campaigned for Britain to leave the European Union.

Critics have accused the Conservatives of tolerating anti-Muslim hatred. In a letter sent to the Conservatives last month, Zara Mohammed, secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain, said that “Islamophobia in the party is institutional, tolerated by the leadership and by large sections of party members as is considered acceptable.”

On Tuesday afternoon, Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative business and trade secretary, said Mr Hester’s comments were, “as reported, racist.”

“Abbott and I disagree on a lot of things. But the idea of linking criticism of her to being a black woman is appalling,” said Ms Badenoch, who is also equalities minister. in a social media post. “It is never acceptable to confuse someone’s opinion with the color of their skin.”

But she added that she welcomed Mr Hester’s apology and said there must be “room for forgiveness” if there was contrition over flippant comments.

For almost 100 years, a 17.5 meter long mural provided the backdrop to a high-end restaurant at Tate Britain. While the guests drank good wine and ate expensive dishes, they could glance at Rex Whistler’s painting, which depicted a hunting party through a fantastic landscape.

Few visitors to London’s art museum seemed to notice two small parts of Whistler’s scene, each spanning just a few inches: one shows a white woman, dressed in a flowing dress and hat, dragging a black boy by a rope, while the boy is unclothed. , terrified mother watches from a tree; the other shows the same boy chained to a collar, running behind a cart.

It wasn’t until 2020, following the murder of George Floyd and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, that anti-racism activists highlighted these sections on social media and demanded the mural’s removal. Soon, Tate closed the restaurant and administrators began to worry about what to do with the painting, titled “The Expedition in Pursuit of Rare Meats.”

Their solution went on display on Tuesday when Tate Britain reopened the ornate room containing the work. Instead of dinners, the mural now surrounds a large video work by the black British artist Keith Piper which aims to highlight and explain Whistler’s racist images. Chloe Hodge, the exhibition’s curator, said Piper’s work would be on display for about a year.

With this new presentation, Tate Britain seeks to balance the demands of activists, who want offensive works of art to be removed from view, and conservative politicians and art lovers, many of whom want museums to avoid any hint of ‘woke’ attitudes. But by taking a middle ground between these positions, Piper said, he knew he and the museum could irritate both sides.

“A lot of people said this is a poisoned chalice,” Piper said.

Piper’s 22-minute dual-screen film, called “Vice Voce” after the Latin name used for oral exams at universities in Britain, dramatizes an imaginary conversation between Whistler (played by Ian Pink) and a university lecturer (Ellen O’Grady). In the first half of the film, the academic Whistler asks questions about the history of the mural, which the artist completed in 1927. The mood suddenly changes when she points out Whistler’s image of the black mother hiding in a tree.

“Who is this?” the teacher asks. “Oh, just a little humor,” Whistler replies.

The teacher has more questions for Whistler: about the racist depictions of black people in other works of art he made, and about the treatment of ethnic minorities in 1920s Britain.

In the video, Whistler is confused by the question. “This is all getting rather distasteful,” he says: “I thought you wanted to talk about my work.”

In Britain, discussions surrounding problematic works of art have focused less on an artist’s motivations and social influences, and more on whether a sculpture or painting should be exhibited at all. But the Whistler mural, which is painted directly onto the museum walls, is protected by British heritage laws, meaning Tate Britain cannot easily remove or change it even if administrators wanted to. And last year the British Conservative government published guidelines said museums should ‘preserve and explain’ problematic images or works of art that are part of a building.

Still, some art critics and members of Tate’s own young and diverse staff urged the museum to hide the mural behind a screen.

Hodge, the curator, said she chose Piper to respond to Whistler’s mural because she felt he would be “deeply involved” with the original painting and not produce “something reactionary.” She added that she expected the work to divide opinion. “We can’t commission work that will do everything for everyone,” said Hodge: “This is ultimately Keith’s own artistic response.”

Piper – founder of the Blk Art Group, a collective of black artists founded in England in the 1980s – has been exploring issues of racism and slavery in his art for decades. In his 1996 video work “Go west, young man”, a father and son discuss racist stereotypes; “The Codex of the Colored,” a faux-historical artifact Piper created in 2017, contains pots of black, brown, and cream paint to represent the ways plantation owners classified and controlled enslaved people.

Zehra Jumabhoy, a lecturer in art history at the University of Bristol, said she was surprised when Tate Britain chose Piper for the commission because “his early work was so angry”. If the museum had wanted to avoid the tensions surrounding the mural, there were safer options, she added.

Still, Piper was the obvious choice for some artists. Hew Locke, the prominent Guyanese British artist, said Piper’s art had the courage, historical accuracy and occasional wit required for the high-profile commission. Piper was “his own man,” Locke said, and wasn’t out to please anyone but himself.

In an interview in the cafe at Tate Britain, Piper said he had never eaten in the restaurant space where his work is now on display: “It was too expensive!” he said – and so had not seen the mural before the commotion.

But he wasn’t shocked to hear that racist images were hanging on the walls of Tate Britain, he said – such stereotypical figures were once commonplace in British art. What had surprised him, however, was how long it took for the museum to do something about the mural. While delving into the institute’s archives, Piper said, he found letters from visitors from the 1970s complaining about the painting.

While the way Whistler had portrayed black people was unacceptable, Piper said, he disagreed with those who had urged Tate Britain to remove the mural or hide it behind a screen. “My argument is that by going against it, it becomes an important witness to history, and by going against it, we learn things and hear things that we may not have heard before,” he said. “That is the important role of the arts and museums.”

After the interview, Piper walked into Tate Britain’s newest gallery to do a final check on ‘Vice Voce’. He chatted briefly with Hodge, who said some other Tate Britain staff had come by to view the piece. While they liked it, they said, some expected the film to “condemn Rex Whistler more.”

Piper looked surprised. “Isn’t it judgmental?” he asked.

Hodge paused. “Well,” she said, “there are always two sides.”

The images were disturbing: three large red swastikas. A menacing warning that reads: “I HATE BLACKS.” And a graphic threat of a school shooting.

The graffiti was found last week on a boys’ bathroom stall at a preparatory high school for an elite college in Manhattan. On Monday, authorities said the vandalism was being investigated as a potential hate crime. The police counter-terrorism unit is also working with the school and no arrests have been made.

The discovery has unnerved students and teachers at Beacon High School in Hell’s Kitchen. After the graffiti was found on Thursday, officers went through the building. Some teens left class to meet with counselors. Employees received a flood of concerned calls and emails.

The shocking episode is the latest in a series that has roiled New York City high schools in recent months in the wake of the war between Israel and Hamas. A raucous demonstration at a Queens high school became a major flashpoint in the fall after officials said a pro-Israel teacher targeted students. And this month, several teachers in Brooklyn reported anti-Semitic And Islamophobic incidents at their high school.

Beacon Principal Johnny A. Ventura said in a series of emails to families that the school was working with authorities to ensure student safety. He called the screed in the bathroom “deplorable and unacceptable.”

“As a black Latino, my first emotions when I heard and saw this were anger, and then sadness that someone at our school would choose to write this,” Mr. Ventura wrote. “We embrace diversity and inclusion at Beacon. A threat to one of us is a threat to all of us.”

Beacon is one of the city’s larger high schools, with just under 1,500 students. The school has a significant Jewish population and about 15 percent of the students are black.

Outside the school, two police vehicles were stationed at the entrance Monday morning as teenagers arrived. Several students said in interviews that the graffiti was deeply disturbing.

“I was shocked,” said Ava Baranowski, 15, a sophomore.

Ava said she still felt “pretty safe” at school. To some students it seems like a joke. But it is really serious,” she says. “I think a lot of people were afraid to come to school on Friday.”

Despite rising friction at several schools in the city, several Beacon students said they had not seen major tensions among their peers. Some added that their history teachers had discussed the war in class. Madeline, 16, a sophomore from Beacon who declined to give her last name, said her classmates seemed united and had taken care of each other after the Oct. 7 attacks.

Responding to criticism that the Department of Education was doing too little to address the war, the city’s schools chancellor, David C. Banks, said in January that school principals would receive mandatory training in March on “navigating difficult conversations.” .

Nathaniel Styer, spokesperson for the Department of Education, said the chancellor has “repeatedly made it clear that all forms of prejudice and hatred – including anti-Semitism – have no place” in schools.

“Education and appropriate consequences must be central to addressing bigoted beliefs and misconceptions that students may bring to school,” he said.

As the graffiti investigation continues, Beacon will have an increasing police presence. Students were banned this week from wandering the school’s corridors and stairwells without the supervision of a staff member. Teachers and students will also have to use the toilets one by one.

Victor Rampen, 16, a sophomore at Beacon, heard about the graffiti Friday morning and said he expected a more visible response, such as metal detectors. He added that he wished more had been done in the immediate aftermath.

“I think that’s a little concerning,” Victor said.

“I don’t think it would ever actually happen,” he said of the threats. “But I still think necessary steps need to be taken.”

Mr. Ventura, the director, told families that “the bigger plan has to be some kind of campaign against hate,” which could include the creation of an anonymous reporting system.

Police said there were no security cameras in the bathroom where the graffiti was found, but officers were examining footage from cameras in the hallway. The principal asked any students who have information about what happened to come forward.

He also apologized to the parents. In his first message on Thursday afternoon, Mr. Ventura mentioned only that graffiti of a swastika had been found in the bathroom. He said staff immediately contacted police and worked to quickly remove the markings “because we knew it would be very traumatizing.”

But some families were left confused about the nature of the vandalism as they learned more from their children.

On Sunday, Mr. Ventura acknowledged that the graffiti’s mention of a school shooting — which included a pointed threat toward black students — was “sadly omitted” from his earlier emails.

“We understand the importance of transparency in these matters,” Mr. Ventura wrote.

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes has given her ‘full support’ to Sam Kerr as she addressed her superstar striker’s trial on Wednesday.

On Monday evening, the Daily Mail exclusively revealed that Kerr will face a criminal trial in February next year after being accused of racially abusing a police officer.

The 2018 Young Australian of the Year will seek to have the charges, which arose from an alleged dispute over a taxi fare, dismissed out of court.

It later emerged that Kerr had called PC Lovell a ‘stupid white PC’ and threw up in the taxi.

And speaking to the media ahead of Chelsea’s upcoming match against Manchester City, Hayes said the club fully supports the 30-year-old.

“Sam has our full support, she knows that,” she said. ‘It’s a difficult time for her. Of course I can’t comment, you know that.

Asked if she was aware of the criminal proceedings before Monday’s news broke, Hayes said: “I cI say that I know she has pleaded not guilty and I don’t want to do anything to jeopardize anything for Sam by talking about it. For that reason, I am sure you can understand that this is all I am going to say on this matter.

“But she has our full support, she knows that. It is very important that I convey that, it is something that I really appreciate.’

This development adds to a frustrating year for Kerr, who has been sidelined due to injury. Hayes said everyone at the London club is supportive.

“There are tough moments, tough times and that’s what my role is at this football club, to make sure I look after our people,” she added. I want to make it clear that Sam will be supported by me and everyone else.”

Hayes’ comments come after Football Australia and Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson revealed they knew nothing about the Twickenham incident.

Speaking to media in Sydney on Tuesday afternoon, Gustavsson confirmed he had not been informed of the allegations before the news broke that morning.

“I heard about it for the first time this morning,” he said.

‘I was informed this morning and was obviously surprised and had some time to talk to the federation [Football Australia] about the.

‘And as you know, the federation has issued a statement. Because it is a legal process, I have to refer to that statement.

But Hayes says the Australia captain has the club's full support

‘Unfortunately I can’t say more than that.

“But I can make it very clear that today was the very first time I heard about it.”

Gustavsson was asked about Kerr’s character and whether the alleged crime was consistent with her personality.

“I cannot comment on the violation as it is a legal matter at this time,” he said.

“All I can say is [on] is my experience and interaction with Sam, as a person, as a football player.

‘And I have only had positive experiences with that.’

When asked if he would support Kerr during the proceedings, Gustavsson gave a blunt answer.

“I think FA was very clear about that too, in terms of supporting our players on and off the pitch,” he said.

‘With the respect and sensitivity that it is. And I understand why there are a lot of questions about it.

‘Of course, as a human being I will always support it [her].’

Kerr was charged on January 21 this year but did not inform Football Australia (FA), chief executive James Johnson said.

“I woke up this morning like everyone else did with the news,” Johnson told reporters in Adelaide.

“And then Football Australia heard about this disturbing event.

‘We are currently trying to get to the bottom of it.

‘We have our own questions that we would like to know, we need to find out what really happened.

“But we also want to say that there is a process going on in Britain and that process must take its course.”

The Princess of Wales’ uncle Gary Goldsmith has criticized Prince Harry for throwing the royal family ‘under the bus’ – defending Kate against claims she was the ‘royal racist’.

Mr Goldsmith, who entered the Celebrity Big Brother house as a contestant tonight, described his royal niece as ‘beautiful’ and branded the racism claims against her as ‘bull****’.

In an interview with The sunMr Goldsmith said: ‘She is beautiful on the outside but even more beautiful on the inside and is a truly loving mother.

‘That’s why I got so angry with Harry and Meghan, because you don’t put a stick in the spoke and you don’t reinvent history.

‘I got quite angry when they attacked my beautiful niece, who couldn’t say anything for herself.’

Mr Goldsmith’s comments come after Kate and King Charles were identified by author Omid Scobie as the ones who allegedly asked Meghan and Harry what color Archie’s skin might be before he was born.

“It’s absolute nonsense and I couldn’t hide my feelings very well when I was given the opportunity to say something,” Mr Goldsmith said. “Kate is 100 percent not racist.”

Mr Goldsmith’s appearance on CBB is described as the ‘last’ [Kate] needs’ as her recovery continues, a royal expert said today.

Mr Goldsmith, the outspoken brother of Kate’s mother Carole Middleton, entered the house this evening as the ITV reboot of the reality TV show begins.

Kate’s uncle said she was able to watch ITV’s Celebrity Big Brother from ‘behind a sofa’ when he entered the house.

Host AJ Odudu asked him: “The nation needs to know: will Kate be watching?”

He said, “If so, it’ll be behind a couch, I think.”

On a videotape broadcast before he entered the house, Goldsmith said, “She’s just perfect.”

‘The first time I met William, Catherine was cooking and William said, ‘Hello, would you like a cup of tea?’ Very normal.’

Royal commentator Phil Dampier said that although the 58-year-old businessman is likely to enter the house “determined to only say nice things” about Kate and William, “after a few days his tongue may loosen up a bit and he may say things that he later regret it’. .

Kate is away from official royal engagements until after Easter following major surgery in January, with Kensington Palace insisting last week that she was still ‘doing well’.

She has not been seen at royal events since attending church at Sandringham with William and their children George, Charlotte and Louis on Christmas Day.

But a reality TV appearance for the ‘black sheep’ Mr. Goldsmith is set to cause headaches for the royal family amid speculation about Kate as she recovers from abdominal surgery.

Mr Goldsmith reportedly tried to land a spot on ITV’s I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here last year but was rejected because he feared it would embarrass his niece.

He is said to have told friends he won’t do anything to hurt Kate or William, but he has previously attacked Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, which is why they could now be in the line of fire.

And Mr Dampier told MailOnline today: ‘The last thing the Princess of Wales needs right now is her uncle talking about her on Celebrity Big Brother.

‘And I’m not surprised by the reports that her mother Carole is not happy about her brother being in the house.

“I’m sure he’ll go there determined to say nothing but nice things about her and William, as he has done in the past. And he probably plans to criticize Harry and Meghan if he gets the chance.

‘But after a few days his tongue may loosen and he may say things he later regrets.’

The commentator also warned that ‘any indication about Kate’s medical condition will not end well for her or William’, adding: ‘I’m sure Gary wants to support his family but giving them more publicity isn’t what’s going on at the moment they want to. .’

Mr Dampier said it would be interesting to know whether Mr Goldsmith consulted Carole or Kate before deciding to enter the house, which “presumably he does for the money”.

And he continued: ‘He has embarrassed them in the past with his misdeeds at Maison de Bang Bang, but he has cleaned up his act in recent years and mainly stayed out of the spotlight.

‘Big Brother bosses will want him to spill the beans – why else would he be there? – but Kate and William will hope he manages to be sensible and focus on other housemates and their problems.’

The rating for “Mary Poppins,” the beloved children’s musical about a nanny with magical powers released 60 years ago, has been raised to PG in Britain for using “discriminatory language,” according to the British Board of Film Classification.

The change in rating follows a wave of recontextualization and reclassification of films from a bygone era for modern audiences, amid changing cultural norms and mores.

“Mary Poppins” contains two uses of an offensive racial slur to describe an indigenous group in South Africa. It is first heard when Admiral Boom asks Michael, a child, if he is going on an adventure to defeat the said group. Admiral Boom repeats the slur during a chimney sweep dance sequence when he shouts that he is under attack. The dancing figures he sees in the distance are not black Africans, but white dancers with faces blackened with soot.

The film was originally rated ‘U’ by Universal upon its release in 1964, and again in 2013 for a theatrical release, the BBFC said in a statement. When it was resubmitted for another theatrical release in February, it was reclassified as PG.

PG is the second least serious of six ratings in Britain. The strictest is 18, which prohibits anyone under that age from renting, purchasing or seeing the film in cinemas.

“We understand from our research into racism and discrimination, and from recent research into classification guidelines, that a key concern for people, parents in particular, is the potential to expose children to discriminatory language” or behavior that they may find distressing or repeat without realizing its potential. According to a spokeswoman for the board, there has been a violation.

Leshu Torchin, a senior lecturer in film studies at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, said the change in rating for “Mary Poppins” made sense, noting that the rating acts as a guideline and doesn’t deter anyone from watching a film.

“It becomes a useful kind of instruction, especially for people with children, to think about whether their own children are ready for these discussions, ready for a movie, or completely ready but perhaps inclined to want to talk,” says Dr. Torchin said.

Movies don’t remain static, she said. “As long as it continues to be watched, there will be a new audience watching it,” she said, adding that the rating makes parents aware “that children can watch a movie, and if they can’t contextualize things with their parents, they come away thinking that certain language is okay, or they come away from it feeling harmed by what they have just seen.”

While the change in rating for “Mary Poppins” came as a surprise to many, it is part of a growing list of films that have been reclassified and revisited with fresh eyes in recent years.

The BBFC noted that it was reclassified in 2023 “Santa Claus: The Movie” (1985) rated higher, for PG, for its mild violence and language. Likewise, the review is for “Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi” (1983) was also elevated to PG for moderate violence.

Movie ratings may also go down. “Enter the Dragon” (1973), “Friday the 13th” (1980) and several others are now labeled 15 after previously receiving higher ratings.

A similar reevaluation has taken place in the United States in recent years. HBO Max is coming in 2020 temporarily removed ‘Gone with the Wind’ a film routinely criticized for whitewashing the horrors of slavery and romanticizing the antebellum South, from its streaming library. The decision came amid intense reflections in the United States over depictions of race and policing following nationwide protests over police brutality. HBO Max cited the need for “an explanation and an indictment” for the film’s depiction of race relations.

Previous television series also came under scrutiny at the time, such as certain episodes of “30 Rock,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “Scrubs.” have been removed from streaming platforms for showing white characters with a black face.

Similarly, Disney+ added a content disclaimer in 2021 to 18 episodes of “The Muppet Show” because they include “negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures.” The company said that rather than removing the content, it acknowledged its harmful effects in hopes of sparking a conversation about the issues.

Books have also been revised after renewed attention. Roald Dahl’s estate in 2023 hundreds of words changed or deletedincluding descriptions of the characters’ appearance, race and gender in at least ten of the author’s children’s books, such as “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “Matilda,” to make them less offensive.

This is the shocking moment a woman launches a foul-mouthed tirade at a black passenger on the London Underground before blaming a 'spiked drink' for her racist behaviour.

Janice Wilding, 49, from Lambeth, south London, was 'surprised' when she saw the disgusting video, which was heard by the court today, and recorded her actions over a drink.

The shocking footage, captured on December 4, 2022 on the Jubilee line, shows Wilding violently shouting at a black passenger.

Disgusted commuters are seen holding Wilding down as she rages at the unsuspecting woman.

You can hear her say, “Don't fucking involve my mother in this. Because I'm tearing you apart, c***.

“I will tear you apart. Because you're black and you think you're big. Shut your damn mouth.”

As she continues her tirade, other passengers are seen gathering around her to stop her, pleading, “Please get off the train.”

The defense is met with hostility, with Wilding shouting at them, 'Get your damn hands off me. She's fucking.

A woman then successfully escorts Wilding off the train as she continues to shout expletives from the other side of the carriage.

The video, taken by witness Anyusha Rose, was shown to police after the incident.

After being assessed, officers recognized Wilding from an incident at a hotel earlier that day and she was arrested in January 2023, Inner London Crown Court heard.

Witness Rose recalled sitting in a “fairly busy” carriage where “obviously drunk” Wilding called other passengers “boring” for not joining in with her songs and then threatened to put them on YouTube, prosecutor Edmund Blackman said.

One woman found it 'extremely uncomfortable' being filmed and tried to grab Wilding's phone when she pointed it at her, sparking a wave of racist abuse.

Wilding said to the black woman, “Where the hell are you from?” and 'Go back to Africa, you don't belong here'.

As the victim got up to walk away, Wilding lunged at her and punched her, but missed. Another passenger intervened and blocked the route but Wilding continued to try to hit her while shouting more abuse, the court was told.

“Go back to Africa… Black motherfucker… Come on, you think you're difficult because you're black,” Mr. Blackman said, using the N-word.

Ultimately, Wilding's chaperone pulled her from the train at West Hampstead, ending the attack. When Ms Rose asked the victim if she wanted to speak to police, she told her: 'What's the point? Nothing will be done.”

After Wilding was identified and arrested, she was charged by mail nine months later with racist fear of violence with words. She pleaded guilty last December.

Judge Nigel Peters KC said it was 'fortunate for justice'. Ms Rose had recorded the attack and shared the video as a public service, then criticized the delay in filing charges.

Lawyer Simeon Wallis said his client was “genuinely remorseful” and wanted to apologize to the victim.

Mr Wallis also claimed the outburst may have been due to 'a combination of medication and alcohol', due to Wilding's use of antipsychotics, and raised Wilding's claim that her drink had been spiked.

'It is clear that Ms Wilding was surprised by what she saw in the video. Based on the strange behavior seen in other parts of the video, she formed the opinion that she was aroused,” Mr Wallis said.

'She didn't drink for the first time. She's never reacted like this to drink before.'

Judge Peters, apparently speaking from sober experience, said it was common to find passengers who had 'had a few' on the night tube.

But he said people should be able to use the service without abuse, warning that “things might have gotten worse” if Wilding had not been dragged off the train by her partner.

'You decided to get annoyed when people were angry about your behavior. Then you uttered the most despicable language imaginable… People should have the right to do what they do, whatever it is on their phone or staring into space, without this kind of behavior and racist language,” he said. Judge Peters.

Judge Peters gave her a community order of 12 months and 100 hours of unpaid work, adding: 'Unpaid work is designed for people like you.'

Bugiel, 30, who has daughters Bria, four, and Bonnie, two, with wife Lauren, said: 'It's sickening to think someone would say something like that.

“I can't believe this is still happening in football – and especially in a multicultural city like Bradford.

“This is not the culture I want my two little girls to grow up in.”

Towards the end of the goalless draw at Valley Parade on Saturday, referee Ross Joyce stopped proceedings after a spectator heard him abusing the Wimbledon striker.

Bugiel said: “I went down after making a mistake and took time to get up because I got kicked in the shin.

“The home crowd became angry and noisy because they wanted the match to resume quickly.

“But just as we were about to take the free kick, the referee stopped to talk to one of his assistants.

“It wasn't until a few minutes later, when the match had ended, that the referee came to me and said: 'Omar, something racist has been said to you, the linesman has picked up on it'.

Even though I didn't hear the racist abuse on Saturday, it's disturbing to think that it was directed at me just because I look a little different.

Omar Bugiel

“It was then explained that an audience member had said, 'Get up, you bastard.'

“I was shocked because it is the second time that specific word has been used against me.

“When I was at Sutton we played Barrow in April 2022 and it was said to me face-to-face. That really shocked me because I had never experienced racism on a personal level.

“Although my teammate Coby Rowe was racially abused during a match at Crawley that season.”

Berlin-born Bugiel was raised in Germany by his Lebanese father Khaled and Polish mother Ewa. He moved to Britain at the age of 16 after his mother paid for him to study English in Chichester.

The winger, who fully embraced and enjoyed English culture, became a professional footballer for Forest Green, Sutton and the Dons after doing the hard work in non-league with Selsey, Burgess Hill, Bognor Regis, Bromley and Worthing.

He became the first Lebanese international to play in the EFL and score at Wembley – after scoring for Bromley in the 2018 FA Trophy final.

Bugiel, whose side faced Barrow on Saturday, said: “Even though I didn't hear the racist abuse on Saturday, it is disturbing to think that it was directed at me just because I look a little different.

“The language could have been heard by others of a certain ethnicity or by children in the crowd. It's very sad.

“At Barrow, a middle-aged man pointed the P-word at me.

“I immediately reported that incident to the referee. The perpetrator was arrested by the police for questioning and it turned out that he had been drinking.

“I completely understand that emotions can run high in football, but I don't understand how someone can then turn that into racist abuse.

“I would never even think of criticizing someone I've never met.

“The ironic thing about Saturday is that before kick-off they even showed 'Show Racism the Red Card' on the screens.”

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has called on clubs that have abandoned a match due to racism to abandon the match.

But Bugiel is not convinced that this is the answer. He said: “Nobody wants a match to be forfeited and I don't think that would necessarily work.

“However, if it gets to the point where the abuse from the terraces doesn't stop, they may have to play a game behind closed doors or have a points deduction if they continually step out of line.

“Ultimately it is up to the home team to keep the spectators under control.”

Bradford are working with West Yorkshire Police to identify the fan and confirmed that anyone found to be racist in their stadium will receive an immediate life ban.

ENGLAND and Brentford have condemned the “despicable harassment” of Ivan Toney after he received more racist online abuse.

And Toney's representatives have called on football authorities and social media platforms to crack down on the “widespread” problem within football.

The furious Bees also branded social media companies' response to abuse as 'disappointing'.

A statement from Brentford said: “We are angry and frustrated to report that Ivan has once again been the victim of racist abuse on Instagram.

“We have launched an investigation into this vile harassment, which we condemn in the strongest terms.

“Unfortunately, this is not the first time Ivan has had to deal with this. Just four weeks ago, a similar incident took place, allowing us to identify an alleged perpetrator who we reported to the authorities. To date, we have not taken any action against this individual.”

A statement from Three Lions added: “It is incredibly disappointing that Ivan Toney has once again been the victim of racist abuse on social media.

“There must be consequences for this behavior, and we support strong action from the authorities and social media companies.”

Toney, 27, has previously received racist comments on Instagram and Brentford wants anyone found guilty of posting racist comments to be prosecuted.

In March 2023, a 24-year-old man was banned from every football pitch in Britain for three years after racially abusing Toney, who had scored the Bees' equalizer at Arsenal, on social media.

The man also received a prison sentence of four months, of which two years.

Brentford's statement added: “Overall, the response from social media platforms to these ongoing issues has been disappointing.

Ivan Toney doubts his future at Brentford as Prem giants linked and Barcelona look to bring Kalvin Phillips to La Liga

“Their solutions, such as filters to simply hide the abuse, may protect players, but completely miss the point and do not discourage offenders. Without real consequences for those responsible, the cycle is doomed to repeat itself.

“We are confident that things can change. We value the dialogue we have with people like Meta, but we call for more decisive and urgent action to combat online hate.

“We call for swift investigations, and most importantly, we call for criminal prosecution. We will continue to work with the authorities and the Premier League and support our players in tackling this appalling online abuse.”

I would prefer to keep Toney, but one day it might be nice to see him on a top team.

Thomas Frank

Luton striker Elijah Adebayo was also targeted in October when the Hatters called it 'despicable and a cowardly act of online abuse'.

And Toney's agent Jonathan Barnett, of ICM Stellar, said: “I unequivocally condemn the racist abuse our player Ivan Toney has been subjected to on social media.

“Everyone at ICM Stellar is shocked that this type of unconscionable and despicable behavior is still prevalent in society today.

“Social media can no longer ignore a widespread and recurring problem on their platforms. We call on all forms of social media to do more to prevent, address and combat unacceptable and distressing incidents of discrimination such as this.

“My team will investigate and report any findings to the appropriate authorities – we won't just be bystanders.

“Personally, I stand with Ivan, his family and friends, and also with everyone who has been a victim of discrimination. We beg the football world to throw it out – once and for all.”

Toney's Brentford boss Thomas Frank has stated that the club will sell their prized asset this summer.

Toney, valued at over €80m and linked with moves to Arsenal and Chelsea in January, has just returned from an eight-month gambling ban and has scored two goals in three Prem games so far on his return.

Frank said: “It is relatively obvious that Ivan will probably be sold this summer. We also know what he is worth. I don't think there are many strikers in the world right now who are better than him.

“Personally, as a coach I would prefer to keep Toney, but one day it could be nice to see him in a top team.

“We didn't actually have any offers for him this winter, but I'll be surprised if there aren't many clubs interested in him.”

Shane Gillis will host an upcoming episode of Saturday Night Live.

The comedian, 36, had previously been fired from the sketch show after videos emerged of him making racist and homophobic comments during a podcast in 2019.

But now he's coming back for a show on February 24 where he'll be joined by musical guest 21 Savage.

In 2019, several clips emerged of the star repeatedly making racist and homophobic comments – including in an episode of Matt and Shane's Secret Podcast.

In the podcast, Gillis and Matt McCusker mocked comedians Judd Apatow and Chris Gethard, calling them “white f****t comics” and “f***ing gayer than ISIS.”

Gillis is also heard telling McCusker that their conversation is “nice racism, good racism.”

Another segment emerged from a September 2018 podcast episode in which Gillis referred to people living in New York City's Chinatown as “f***ing c***ks.”

He also mocked a Chinese accent and the language barrier in the video, saying, “Chinatown is fucking crazy.”

“The translation between you and the waiter is just such a damn hassle, it's like, I'm pointing at it, like these are the damn noodles.”

Gillis was announced as a host on SNL's February 3 show with host Ayo Edebiri.

Gillis quickly apologized for a decade of mostly “bad” comedy on Twitter.

'I am a comedian who pushes boundaries. I miss it sometimes. If you go through my decade of comedy, most of which is bad, you'll find a lot of bad misses,” Gillis said in his apology note.

'I would like to apologize to anyone who was actually offended by what I said. “It's never my intention to hurt anyone, but I try to be the best comedian I can be and sometimes that comes with risks.”

SNL said at the time: “After discussions with Shane Gillis, we have decided that he will not be joining 'SNL.'

“We want 'SNL' to have a diversity of voices and points of view within the show, and we hired Shane based on his talent as a comedian and his impressive audition for 'SNL.'

“We were not aware of his previous comments that surfaced in recent days. The language he used is offensive, hurtful and unacceptable.

“We apologize that we did not see these clips sooner and that our review process did not meet our standards.”

Shane added, “It feels ridiculous for comedians to make serious public statements, but here we are.

“I'm a comedian who was funny enough to get 'SNL.' That cannot be taken away. Of course I wanted a chance to prove myself on 'SNL', but I understand that would be too much of a distraction.

“I respect the decision they made. I'm honestly grateful for the opportunity. I was always a TV nut [sic] However.'
