Dame Laura Kelly has hinted that a miscarriage and desire for a second child could be the reason behind her shock retirement.

Britain’s five-time Olympic gold medalist today announced that she has retired from cycling after ending her dream of qualifying for this summer’s Olympic Games.

The mother-of-two, 31, from Harlow, appeared on BBC’s Woman’s Hour, where she discussed how motherhood had affected her distinguished career and how juggling both had meant constant ‘sacrifice’.

During the candid interview, she also revealed that a miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy she suffered in 2021 played more of a role in the decision than I ever realized.

Speaking to hosts, Laura opened up about raising her two children Albie, six, and Monty, eight months, with husband and seven-time champion Jason Kenny, 35.

She said: ‘I was very open about having a miscarriage and the ectopic condition [pregnancy].

“I think that might have meant more than I ever realized or expected.

“All I ever wanted for Albie was a brother or sister. I always thought of Albie as a big brother – and that might not happen and I might not have another baby…

“Once it was here and I had another one, I just didn’t want to waste that time.”

Before Monty turns eight months old tomorrow, Laura said she feels a growing need to spend more time with her children.

She also shared that parenthood wasn’t as “easy” this time around compared to when she had her first son Albie, admitting that she may have “taken that time in her life for granted.”

She explained, “He is [Monty] is eight months tomorrow. I mean, I don’t know where that went, and I’ve been with him every step of the way, you know.

“Maybe I can sit here now and say that I took Albie for granted a little bit – how easy it was to have Albie. How easy everything seemed at the time. I would just ask my parents to come and take care of him.

‘While this time I just didn’t want to. I wish I was. I didn’t want to miss anything.”

Last year the Harlow-born athlete revealed the heartbreaking news that she had suffered a miscarriage, leaving her ‘so lost’ and ‘sad’.

Britain’s most successful female Olympian revealed in an Instagram post that the miscarriage occurred in November 2021 and that one of her fallopian tubes was removed in January 2022 due to an ectopic pregnancy.

She has since spoken openly about the personal difficulties she faced in competing, namely pursuing a fourth Games in Paris, despite only giving birth to her second son, Monty, last July.

With her chances of selection judged to be ‘slim’ by British Cycling bosses earlier this month, Laura decided to end her illustrious career altogether at the age of 31.

Speaking on Woman’s Hour, she spoke in detail about the physical challenges of mothering two children.

She said: “It just seemed right at the time [after birthing Albie] I was really into it, I went for it completely. While the recovery took longer this time, it took 12 weeks before I could cycle again.

‘And it’s just a lot. It’s just a lot to leave someone so young who was still eating. I mean, I’m still breastfeeding. It’s a lot to sacrifice’.

In response to a question about the pressure of having to qualify for the Olympics ‘so quickly’ and before next month, Laura noted that the ‘pressure’ was ‘really daunting’.

“It meant leaving them quick and sharp,” she added.

‘I just couldn’t do it. I just didn’t want to do it.”

She added that comments from her eldest child about being “sad” that she would be leaving for the Olympics were not something she could “live with”, and also revealed that she struggled being separated from Albie at the time athletes had to lock up two weeks before the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Olympics.

Last week, pop star Lily Allen sent shockwaves across the country over comments that having her two daughters “completely ruined” her career.

In response, Laura disagreed and instead said that women “can have it all,” but questioned whether it was “worth it” in the long run.

She said, “I mean, I think you have to be prepared. I was recently asked this; someone said to me: was it worth it? Can you do both? Can you have it all?

“And I would say, yes, and I could have gotten back on the bike and I could have possibly qualified for the next Olympics, but you have to think about whether it’s worth it.

“Because in the long run it’s your luck that you’re playing with, you know – and it was chaos.

“Albie traveling the world and traveling the world with him and qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics was an absolute bloodbath.”

She admitted that she and her husband Jason made it look “easy,” “but it was far from it” and “there were some seriously heartbreaking sacrifices along the way.”

Laura won gold in the omnium and team pursuit at both London 2012 and Rio 2016. After giving birth to her first son Albie in 2017, she won the team race at Tokyo 2020 alongside Katie Archibald, as well as silver in the team. pursue. She also claimed seven world titles.

Kenny wrote on social media: ‘Thank you cycling for everything you’ve given me – including a husband and our growing family!

‘For people to say that I have inspired women and girls to get active and get on their bikes means a lot to me.

‘Thank you to Team GB, British Cycling and all the partners who supported my journey. A special thank you to every teammate I have had over the years and of course to my family for being the best support unit I could ever ask for.

“Now it’s time to move on, but stay tuned for the next chapter.”

Kenny says she hopes to be in Paris in ‘some capacity’ but has ruled out becoming a coach like her husband Jason, who will work with the British men’s sprint team after his retirement in 2022.

“Nothing is set in stone, but there are things I’m so interested in,” she told the BBC. ‘Something to help the younger generation, whether that could be some kind of academy.

‘I could never become a coach because that’s just too much pressure for me, but maybe something in the background that gives the young people the opportunities that I had.’

Paying tribute to Kenny, British Cycling performance director Stephen Park said: ‘Laura hangs up her wheels not only as one of the sport’s greatest riders, but as one of the greatest sporting talents our country has ever produced.

‘Anyone who has had the pleasure of watching Laura compete will testify to her peerless combination of craft and determination, which led her to become Britain’s most successful female Olympian and the first British woman to win gold medals in three consecutive Olympic Games.

‘Equally impressive, however, is the impact Laura has had on her fellow Great Britain Cycling Team riders and the next generation of Olympic hopefuls.

‘She has been a beacon of inspiration to so many, young and old, and I am sure the entire British cycling community will wish her all the best in the next chapter of her life.

“From Welwyn Wheelers and our talent pathway to the very top of the sport, we are so proud of everything she has achieved, and I am sure she will remain one of our team’s biggest supporters for many years to come. ‘

Savers could face a hefty penalty when they retire, as plans to protect thousands of workers from pension taxes have been scrapped.

Labor has reversed plans to protect some public sector workers by reintroducing the lifetime allowance (LTA) if it wins the next general election, The Sun has learned.

1

According to reports, certain public sector employees would be given separate allowancesCredit: Getty

The Longevity Allowance (LTA) is the total amount that you can save tax-free for your pension during your lifetime.

The Party had previously said it would provide a ‘carve-out’ for doctors to avoid being hit by pension taxes.

Meanwhile, reports earlier this month suggested that Labor was planning to introduce separate rules for other ‘critical’ public sector workers, including teachers.

The party has committed to reintroducing the LTA if it wins the next election, after the current conservative government announced it would scrap the policy in its spring 2023 budget.

The intention is for the surcharge to be abolished in April this year.

Shortly after the announcement, Labor said it disagreed with the abolition of the allowance and announced it would bring it back as a key pledge.

This proposal has not been very popular, and Labor has since come under enormous pressure from public sector workers most affected by the LTA.

As a result, the country has announced a series of plans on how it wants to prevent policies from affecting them after retirement, such as creating separate allowances for certain public sector professions.

Meanwhile, private sector workers would still be fully subject to the regular LTA.

According to Shadow Treasury insiders, Labor has now abandoned plans to create a separate system between private and public sector pensions or create a ‘carve-out’ for public sector workers.

Instead, ongoing policy work is now focusing on the level at which the LTA should be restored, taking into account the substantial inflation since the level was last set.

It is understood the party is still considering pressure on the public sector as part of this decision, but will seek to retain public sector leaders through a more proportionate solution.

One industry source said these latest plans suggest Labor could instead set the LTA threshold at a higher level than previously set when it was reintroduced.

This would mean that some currently affected employees would no longer be punished as a matter of course.

Experts had previously said that attempting a separate system for public and private sector workers was unworkable and would introduce unfairness into the system, even if it protected crucial workers.

Steve Webb, partner at consultants LCP, said if there is to be a lifetime benefit it should apply equally to everyone.

“It would be both wrong and impractical to try to exempt people who have worked in certain sectors,” the former pensions minister said.

“If the opposition wants to prevent doctors and others from voting with their feet and taking early retirement to be on the safe side, it will have to be clear about its plans well before the elections, so that people can make well-informed choices about retirement savings and retirement.”

What is the lifelong benefit and who is affected by it?

The lifetime allowance was last set at £1,073,100, although this will be abolished entirely from April.

This means that you cannot save more than this amount in your pension without being subject to tax.

The rules generally affect higher earners, who have the opportunity to save more for their pension over their lifetime.

However, certain public sector professions are particularly affected as they typically work high levels of paid overtime due to the pressures on their profession.

The punitive pension tax has led to many doctors retiring earlier than they would otherwise have done to avoid being hit with a huge bill – a situation the NHS cannot afford.

The same problem exists in the teaching profession, where top principals are retiring early because of taxes.

While experts support eliminating inequality between professions and possibly raising the threshold – affecting fewer workers – they say it would be better for Labor to drop plans to reintroduce the LTA altogether.

Tom Selby, director of public policy at pensions company AJ Bell, said: “Abolishing the LTA was a hugely positive step that in one fell swoop removed one of the biggest barriers to senior doctors taking on extra hours, putting pressure on the NHS was illuminated.

“The decision was also a big positive for savers, who will no longer face penalties for doing the right thing and saving for their future.

“Bringing back the LTA would be a colossal mistake, penalizing savers and inevitably adding a layer of unwanted complexity.

“The sensible thing Labor could do would be to quietly renege on its promise to reintroduce it.”

Thirteen months after a grueling operation, the winger has admitted he is already planning for life after football as he remains unsure whether he can return to football.

Speaking on the Jijantes Twitch channel via Calciomercato.com Deulofeu said: “I knew for months that I might not play again.

“I haven’t been able to do what I love for a long time, I haven’t played for more than a year. I can’t say much, but I’m going through a trial.

“You can’t imagine what I’m going through. I am trying to recover in every way possible, but I have accepted the idea that I may never recover.

“In 2020 I had an injury, my knee was very traumatized, but I managed to recover. Then I suffered another injury for the third time and there were complications.

“I can’t say much because I have an agreement with my club, but I just want to say that it is a real test. You can’t imagine what’s happening to me.

“However, I am trying to recover in any way I can. But I am also preparing for what a career after playing could be.”

Deulofeu is still under contract with Udinese until June 2026 and Calciomercato claims he could be offered a role in the club’s backroom staff should he be forced into retirement.

The player was reportedly close to joining Antonio Conte at Spurs before the injury in January last year, but now 13 months later he is looking at retirement.

He went on to talk about planning a career change after football, saying: “Fortunately I have been able to make a big change on a personal level. I am happy for my change, for those who have been by my side and for what I have created in my life.

Where are they now: the unusual careers of former footballers

“This saves me, because if you don’t have an organized life on a personal level, after such a hard blow, with so many operations on my leg… I would probably have ended up in a depression.”

The winger did not elaborate on exactly what his plans would be if his latest surgery forces him to leave the game.

Deulofeu was loaned out by Barcelona to Everton ahead of the 2013/2014 season before joining the Toffees permanently in 2015.

He then left Everton to join AC Milan in 2017 before returning to Barcelona, so he has quite the CV.

Deulofeu joined Watford in 2018 and played a key role in the team that reached the 2019 FA Cup final.

Both Everton and Watford have expressed their support for Deulofeu on X after he went public with his struggles.

The winger responded to both clubs by writing ‘Love you’.

The 38-year-old Modric has played twenty times for Los Blancos in LaLiga this season, scoring once and assisting four more times.

The Athletics has claimed that the midfielder was offered the opportunity to join Carlo Ancelotti's backroom staff two months ago.

The report's source says the Croat turned down the opportunity, although he was “grateful” for the opportunity.

It further adds that Modric's rejection was not “final” and that he could still consider the role.

The paper continues to suggest that Modric is “still hungry” and is prioritizing continuing his playing career.

Modric was expected to leave Real Madrid at the end of the season as an extension to his contract is “not likely”.

The midfielder has since been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, with several clubs in the Middle East interested in his signature.

This included an offer from Al-Nassr last summer, but he rejected the move and signed a one-year extension with Real.

The state pension age is expected to rise, meaning that millions of workers will be forced to stay in work longer.

This number is expected to rise to 68 by the end of the 2040s, representing a major blow to the population households.

But what is the state pension age and how can you find out what your state pension age is?

Here's everything you need to know.

What is the AOW and when will the age increase?

The current state pension is currently paid to both men and women from the age of 66.

The state pension age will now rise to 67 years in 2028 and 68 years in 2046.

An earlier review by Sir John Cridland in 2017 recommended bringing that date forward to between 2037 and 2039.

But average life expectancy has not increased since then as he predicted.

Work and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride told MPs in March last year that while life expectancy is still rising, it is at a slower pace.

Among other factors, such as the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine, he said it would be appropriate to revisit the increase to 68 at a later date.

It comes after the government is said to be considering raising the state pension age to 68 as early as 2035, as The Sun revealed in January. But these plans have yet to be confirmed.

How would it have affected you?

Those in their early 50s would be most affected.

In particular, those born in April 1969 and April 1971, because they were heading towards a retirement age of 67 – but this would have meant working an extra year.

The state pension age has risen as the British get older.

This means that everyone will have to work longer according to the plans, but those born after April 1971 were already on their way to a state pension age of 68.

How exactly it affects you depends on your date of birth.

It comes after a recent report from the International Longevity Center suggests the retirement age may need to be raised to 71.

The think tank said anyone born after April 1970 could be forced to work longer to keep pace with the number of workers leaving their jobs before reaching state pension age.

However, this is exactly what experts at the International Longevity Center suggest will happen, and it is not confirmed.

Millions of Brits will be forced to work longer as the state pension age rises

2

How can I calculate my current state pension age?

You can use the state pension checker on Gov.uk.

With the government tool you can find out how many years of premiums you have paid, how much AOW you will receive and the exact date on which you will receive your benefit.

It is important to note that you can retire at any time, but you must have a personal pension or retirement plan.

IF there's one thing everyone needs in life, it's the ability to communicate well, and sometimes it pays to know how to do that well.

One woman has confessed to earning up to £775 an hour by training people in the art of reading body language, according to documents seen by The Sun.

Carole Railton, a 70-year-old body language expert from London, says she fell into the profession by accident and quickly devised a plan to make a career out of it.

She struggled at school and only later discovered that her dyslexia was holding her back.

She told The Sun: “At school I was really good at sport and art, but I struggled with reading. Studying was not something I aspired to at that time.”

Straight after school, Carole went into recruitment, but she soon realized that her social skills could be better used elsewhere.

It wasn't until Carole was 45 that she discovered she was dyslexic.

It was then that she realized how much skill she had developed in understanding people's body language without the aid of spoken word.

“In my early life I relied heavily on visuals, adapting to people's personalities and body language skills was something I was an expert at,” she said.

“It didn't take long before I realized I could sell my skills.”

Carole built her skills in reading body language, picking up books by other authors and studying on her own.

“I quickly realized that there were gaps in my knowledge of some of these authors that I could fill.

For example, at the time there was no real distinction between male and female behavior, and I made that.”

“Once I was able to break away from the current market, things became a lot easier. This raised my public profile and put me on the speaking circuit.”

Carole's first big break came when she landed a high-profile client early on and was quickly able to prove her worth.

She said: “I was fortunate enough to land a major client with an insurance company as soon as I started teaching body language full-time.”

“They gave their top sales team to me for three days. The theory was that if I could make them even better, I could help all the other sellers.”

“It was so successful that they opened another location and I trained the rest of their sales teams.”

What is reading body language?

Carole said that up to 70% of communication can be visual, i.e. body language and clothing.

Noting that it is an “essential part” of human communication, she added: “If you have the tools you need to read someone, you can tell when he or she is sad, struggling or even lying, without him or her even saying anything.”

The skill is great for companies based in sales or customer service, but you can take it a step further by using it to understand personality styles and recognize criminal behavior and deception.

Carole said: “When I first came on the scene, I was competing with body language experts from secret services and national security organizations like the FBI.”

Jet setter

Carole explains that her work has not only helped people, but also allowed her to travel and explore the world.

She said: “I have been to 47 countries and lived and worked all over the world in Zambia, South Africa, Germany, USA, France, Australia, Nigeria, Austria, Ireland, Serbia and Indonesia.”

“I love my job, it's such an interesting topic of conversation, people always want to know more about what I do.”

She added: “Working for yourself gives you freedom. Whenever there has been a quiet period, I have gone on holiday to recharge.”

“I still have a few clients and regularly work for the national press analyzing the body language of famous people in new situations, including the recent coronation which looked at the Royal Family, especially Harry and Charles.”

Manage a schedule

In addition to traveling, Carole also gets to set her schedule.

She says: “I am now at the stage where I can demand a high hourly or daily rate. I usually pay based on the success of the assignment.”

“My daily rate is currently between £3,500 and £10,000 and I usually only work two or three days a week.”

“I only accept orders if a quantitative measurement takes place a few months later, so I pay based on that.

“50% upfront and 50% upon completion of success three months later.”

Although her earnings are high, Carole admits that she plans to slow things down before she retires.

“I'm in my 70s, so I only want to work one week a month from the new tax year in April.”

Carole explained that most of her clients find her through public speaking engagements.

She said: “I have done a lot of public speaking which has brought some new clients, others through global gurus and probably the most common way is through management consultants who have used me and are using me again or recommending me to their clients.”

“In the beginning, I went to networking events and business fairs to meet as many buyers as possible.”

Carole said she saw an increase in customers during the pandemic when her first book The Future of Body Language helped educate people on how to behave in multimedia.

She said: “I was also commissioned to write 'A Useful Guide to Personal Branding' for a university management book series.”

Carole now teaches people how to read the body language of others, but also how to adjust their own body language to have more influence.

In her courses you will learn how to analyze the behavior of high-profile individuals, sellers and buyers.

She can teach you how to recognize signs of cheating in the four major personality types.

Maybe you want to become a master of your own body language. In that case, you can take a course to increase your influencing skills.

Carole can even tell you which job you are most suitable for based on your behavior and body language.

Enter the field

Ultimately, Carole confirmed that she doesn't think going to college would have helped develop her career.

She said: “I have over 25 years of experience in the field, I have run companies and now I am the eighth largest body language expert in the world.”

“I believe this is mainly because I have been able to be creative and imaginative and not follow the usual route.”

However, the businesswoman admits that things have changed since she entered the field 45 years ago.

“Things have changed lately. It may be helpful to take a course to substantiate your experiences in understanding body language.”

There are numerous resources online, such as helpful YouTube videos and LinkedIn courses.

Please note that some clients may request proof of training in this field.

Top tips from a body language expert

Carole believes that anyone who wants to participate in body language training must have sufficient finances.

She said: “I made a lot of mistakes with the business, including initially doing everything myself and trying to save money.”

“It is best to involve others in the beginning, get a loan rather than financing yourself. Be careful not to become easily distracted or depressed, neither of which will help you.”

Carole says to ignore the naysayers who try to claim that you won't get far in life without a degree.

“I have a good income. I studied and received all kinds of awards along the way. Working for yourself proves that you can understand others, adapt, lead and control your life.”

“Look at those who are really successful, like Steve Jobs and Richard Branson, not all of them have a degree.”

John Cena isn't quite ready to retire from wrestling yet, but he does have plans to do so soon.

“That's not a maybe,” Cena, 46, said Entertainment tonight on Tuesday, January 23. “That time will come and it will come soon.”

Cena made his WWE debut in 2002. He noted that he has had “at least one match a year” since then and doesn't “plan on missing a year” for “as long as [he] can perform.”

“I made a commitment early on to the consumer, to WWE fans, because I know how hard it is to be a fan. You have to come out of your own pocket – and WWE has a lot of content – it takes a lot to be a passionate fan, and our fan base is passionate and global,” he said. “I never wanted to go out there just to go there.”

Cena said he feels “great” before he turns 47.

“So inside I feel great, but I know what it takes to be a WWE performer night in and night out and I never feel like just going out there and doing it for the sake of doing it,” said he. “I want to have the passion – the same passion as the fan base – and I want to give them exactly what they give me. The miles on the speedometer say, “Hey, that's gotta happen before 50.”

Cena made his transition to acting during a break from wrestling in 2006. Since then, he has starred in several notable films, including Train wreck, Blockers and the upcoming 2024 film Argylle.

“It's hard to combine both because, you know, when you're filming Argylle, Matthew [Vaughn] I won't let you do anything else because of insurance,” he joked about the film's director. “So as long as the phone keeps ringing and we've had some good opportunities here, I'll keep that going for as long as possible. But even when I come back for these one-offs or short three-month stints, it's taking its toll more and more and I've just been incredibly lucky with my health. I feel amazing. I want to continue to feel great for the rest of my life.”

As for whether Cena will appear at the upcoming WrestleMania event in April, he hinted at the possibility.

“I don't know if I'm free that weekend, but it's a weekend and no movies are shot on the weekend,” he joked. “But when I say I'm done – in WWE they never say, say never and a lot of people retire and come back – I'm just being honest with myself. There is such a great new generation now too. It's time to pass on the electric energy to the people who can be there every day.”

Travis Kelce thinks his big brother, Jason Kelcecould continue playing football if that is his goal.

“It's been cool to see everyone over the last week appreciating who he's been over the years,” Travis, 34, said in a Kansas City Chiefs game. press conference on Friday, January 19. “I think the big man still has some football left if he wants it.”

Travis noted that Jason's possible retirement had been a hot topic following his brother's emotional reaction to the Philadelphia Eagles' loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday, January 15, which knocked the Birds out of the playoffs. Following the heartbreaking defeat, reports emerged that Jason, 36, told his teammates he was retiring, but that was not the case.

“It turns out he was retired, but he didn't really say anything about that,” Travis explained on Friday. “I think everyone felt a little bit for him at the end of that game, knowing what he was thinking about [retirement] a lot over the past few years. The documentary shows that you don't have to walk around and ask someone.”

Jason Kelce has been a fixture on the Philadelphia Eagles offense for more than a decade, but he's realistic about the idea of retirement. For his part, Jason cleared the air on the Wednesday, Jan. 17, episode of his and Travis' “New Heights” podcast about those retirement rumors.

“I didn't announce what I was doing on purpose… but people can sense body language and stuff,” Jason noted. “I just don't think after a match like that you're really in a position to really make that decision, I just don't. There is too much emotion in the moment, too much happening in that moment to really fully understand that decision.”

The Eagles center explained that when he decides to officially retire, he wants to do so on his own terms.

“It's just something that I think when the time comes to officially announce what's going to happen in the future, it will be done in a way that is definitive and pays respect to a lot of people and individuals who have meant a lot to me and what led to the career I've had,” he explained. “I don't think it would be respectful or even accurate to be able to do that right after a match like that. … Something will be said in the future, I think.”

Jason Kelce appears ready for retirement after thirteen years in the NFL. Kelce, 36, reportedly told his teammates he was retiring after the Philadelphia Eagles lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Jan. 15, according to NFL insider Adam Schefter. After the loss, Jason seemed emotionally on the sidelines, as did his wife […]

In addition to discussing his football future, Jason talked about how “frustrating” it was that the Eagles season ended on an emotional note.

“I love everyone in that building so much, all the teammates, all those coaches. You put a lot of hard work into it, you really do, and if it doesn't work out… it's a big collapse,” Jason shared. “Started 10-1 and ended up losing six of our last seven games. …A rough way to finish her off this year.”

Travis admitted on the podcast that it was “tough” to see his brother's team end their season that way — especially as part of the Kelce family.

“I think everyone in the football world felt this,” Travis said. “Obviously there are a lot of emotions at the end of this match for you guys, but I can relate because I felt it. I know Kylie, mom, dad, everyone who was at the game felt it. And I know all the friends and family I got texts from… they all felt it, man.”
