ARSENAL climbed to the top of the Premier League table with a late dramatic win over Brentford.

The 2-1 win helped the Gunners leapfrog rivals Liverpool and Man City.

This campaign’s title race promises to be the most exciting ever, with the three parties able to claim real contenders.

Liverpool and Man City will face off against each other in a mouth-watering clash at the Etihad on Sunday.

It is the last time, at least on our shores, that legendary managers Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola will face each other.

While Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta hopes to become a Premier League winner for the first time, just like his rivals

But if an eerie omen is to be believed, the title’s destiny may just be foretold.

A small statistic that helped Man Utd become champions in 2009, Liverpool in 2020 and Man City in 2021 has been unlocked by one of the three title rivals.

Arsenal have joined that bunch and have now become only the fourth team to win each of the first eight Premier League games of a calendar year.

That could indicate that the title could go to North London this season.

However, they worked hard to beat a well-drilled Brentford side.

‘Can you deal with that?’ asks Thierry Henry as he points out six games that could derail Arsenal’s title hopes

CHELTENHAM BETTING OFFERS – BEST FREE BETTS FOR THE FESTIVAL

Things looked better when Declan Rice headed Ben White’s brilliant cross in the 19th minute to send the fans wild.

But Aaron Ramsdale took too long with his free move just before half-time, and when Yoane Wissa closed it down, the ball ended up in the net.

Arteta’s side toiled in the first half and eventually got the winner through German star Havertz, after great work from Ben White and a brilliant cross.

They were three crucial points that could see the Gunners end their two-decade wait for the Premier League.

After almost five weeks of tears, tantrums and explosive rows, the first Love Island All Stars final is just around the corner.

The series started on Monday January 15 and after five drama-filled weeks, it will come to an end on Monday.

The winners will be given the option to split a cash prize of £50,000 between them or steal it, meaning one person walks away with the whole sum and the other gets nothing.

Viewers have witnessed everything from exes being left heartbroken for a second time, while others have formed strong connections that will later be tested outside of the show.

MailOnline takes a look back at the most dramatic moments of Love Island All Stars.

Exes Callum Jones and Molly Smith BOTH entered the villa

Love Island exes Callum Jones and Molly Smith were given quite the shock as they both entered the villa as bombshells at the start of the series.

The couple met when Molly was a Casa Amor bombshell on the 2020 season and went on to have a three-year relationship, even moving in together in Manchester.

But they broke up just six months ago and had an awkward on-screen reunion when they both shockingly entered the South African villa during the All Stars launch.

Callum was revealed to be the first bombshell shaking things up in the villa directly after host Maya Jama coupled up the main line-up of former show legends.

However in an epic and very unexpected twist, Molly walked in directly after him as a second bombshell, leaving Callum completely stunned.

Upon her entrance, Callum was wide-eyed as Molly strutted her stuff through the doors, leaving the rest of the villa reeling at the very uncomfortable reunion.

Maya then explained that Callum would have a choice between stealing one of the girls from an existing couple, or coupling up with his ex-girlfriend Molly.

Molly was seen looking unimpressed and rolling her eyes at the prospect of Callum picking her following their break-up, as the pair did not appear to be on good terms.

He picked Molly in the first recoupling, but the pair have went on to enjoy connections with other islanders.

Jake Cornish QUIT within days of entering the villa

Jake Cornish dramatically quit Love Island All Stars after just three days in the villa.

The former contestant, 26, who starred on series seven of the show, faced an awkward reunion with ex Liberty Poole, 24, when he entered the South African villa.

Jake decided he ‘couldn’t stay’ after the public voted for the exes to be coupled up together on last night’s launch show.

‘Jake was really shocked to see Liberty in the villa – they had no idea the other person would be there,’ a source told The Sun.

‘It was clear from the start they wouldn’t get back together, then none of the girls wanted to step forward for him.

‘Jake had a nice three days in the villa and had a very emotional chat to Maya Jama, he couldn’t stay in the villa so he quit the show. It’s not his time and it’s not the right time to find love.

‘Messy Mitch’ got into an explosive argument with Luis Morrison

‘Messy Mitch’ got into an explosive argument with Luis Morrison over Demi Jones.

Luis fell out with Mitch after learning the former gas engineer had told some of their fellow Islanders of Luis’s kiss with Demi.

Series one star Luis was chosen by Kaz in the recoupling after they shared a number of flirty chats.

But he was seen sharing a passionate kiss with Demi during Thursday’s episode, which Mitch had gossiped about, as he is also vying for Demi’s affections.

Luis exploded into a shocking outburst, summoning Mitch over by raging: ‘Mitch, come here Bruv. You know what you did there, Bruv.’

He went on to brand Mitch a ‘s**t stirring little p***k’ and ordered: ‘Don’t talk to me ever, Bruv’.

Mitch again told him to ‘behave” and then told Luis to ‘take his hands out of his face’ while their co-stars looked on in shock.

Once things later calmed down, Luis attempted to clear the air, saying: ‘Come here brother, sorry bro…I’m sorry man…I don’t want any rift in here.’

Demi Jones and Luis Morrison were given the boot from the villa just one week in

Love Island All Stars viewers were left stunned as two Islanders were given the boot from the villa in a shock dumping just one week after the show launched.

In a surprise twist Demi Jones and Luis Morrison became the first Islanders to be dumped after both contestants were left single.

Bombshell Tyler Cruickshank was seen arriving in the villa just before the dumping, with him and fellow bombshell Arabella Chi, who arrived last week, choosing who they wanted to be coupled-up with.

Arabella picked Chris Taylor, who had been paired with Demi, while Tyler chose to reunite with his ex Kaz Kamwi, who had been coupled with Luis.

After their partners had been stolen, host Maya Jama said: ‘Demi and Luis, I’m afraid your Love Island journey has now come to an end.

‘You’ve both been dumped from the island. I’m sorry guys. Please pack your bags and head outside of the villa.’

The surprise move left the other Islanders stunned before the said their emotional goodbyes.

Anton and Mitch’s explosive row

Anton put Messy Mitch ‘in his place’

Anton was praised by fans when he put Messy Mitch in his place during a tense argument.

The Scot, 29, had firm words for fellow Islander Mitch, 27, from 2023’s series, after his actions caused partner Liberty Poole to run to Anton in tears.

Comforting a distressed Liberty, Anton told her he believed Mitch was chasing ‘clout’ as he spoke constantly about growing his social media following.

When Anton’s suggestions that Mitch does not have noble intentions for Liberty got back to Mitch, he confronted Anton over breaking ‘bro code’.

Mitch declared: ‘You are talking to Lib behind my back, going against me, and it’s not really bro code.’ He then firmly told Anton: ‘Keep your nose out of my business.’

Anton swiftly hit back: ‘There is no bro code. There is right and wrong… I’m telling her my opinion. If your girl comes crying to me asking for advice I will give her my advice. You’ve been together seven days and made her cry twice…’

Unimpressed, Mitch said: ‘You’re just a d**k Anton,’ before calling him a ‘k***head’.

Un-fazed, Anton replied: ‘Look at yourself, don’t look at me. Be a man, not a boy.’

Toby dumping Arabella to steal Georgia S from Callum in the series’ most shocking recoupling

Love Island All Stars viewers are left in complete shock as Toby Aromolaran recoupled with Georgia Steel over flame Arabella Chi.

The former footballer hinted he was still interested in Georgia earlier in the episode to Chris Taylor after he previously ditched her to her to know other people.

In the dramatic recoupling, Toby had not told Arabella he was still interested in the brunette beauty still.

He said: ‘I’ve been going back and fourth with this.

‘I have her back as much as she has mine. I can see this working on the outside and I have a real opportunity here.

‘Fortune favours brave, so the person I would like to couple up with is…. Georgia’.

Jaws quickly dropped in the South African villa as Georgia made her way to sit with Toby while Arabella remained standing around the fire and Georgia’s partner Callum looked over in shock.

Sophie Piper was heard saying: ‘Imagine waiting til the recoupling speech and not saying anything to you Arabella’.

ITV2 fans quickly took to X – formerly known as Twitter – to praise Toby for finally ‘bringing the drama’ to the villa.

Georgia S was FINALLY exposed during dramatic PDA Awards

Love Island viewers rejoiced as Georgia Steel’s ‘sneaky’ ways were finally exposed during the dramatic PDA Awards.

The reality star, 25, had been coupled up with Callum, 27, before her head was turned by new arrival Tom Clare, who she has romantic history with.

Viewers have watched as Georgia, who is now coupled up with Toby Aromolaran, dismissed her flirty chats with Tom to the other Islanders.

Most notably to her love interest Callum when they shared a night in the hideaway together and she told him he was the only person she wanted to be there with.

However, the villa was rocked when it was revealed that Georgia isn’t quite as honest as she was making out.

During the nominations for ‘sneakiest islander’, a video clip of each of Georgia’s interactions with Tom was aired for the entire villa.

This included a clip of her approaching Tom following her night away with Callum, where she told him that she still fancied him.

A further video of the pair playing a game of truth or dare, showed her telling Tom that she would rather be coupled up with him over Callum.

While viewers have watched it play out, her co-stars have been none the wiser to her flirty antics with both contestants.

As she was finally exposed during the awards challenge, viewers admitted they were delighted to watch her downfall.

Molly broke down in tears following confrontation with Georgia S

Love Island All Stars fans heaped praised on Molly Smith after she broke down in tears after the PDA awards.

Georgia S’ ‘sneaky’ ways were finally exposed, as clips revealed her flirtations with Callum Jones, Tom Clare and Toby Aromolaran.

The villa was rocked as they learned about her flirty antics as she was voted ‘sneakiest islander’.

The fall out from the awards was far and wide as the Islanders shouted across the garden at each other following the revelations.

Callum declared he was ‘done’ with Georgia as she tried to defend herself, and then compared her ‘history’ with Toby to Callum’s three and a half year relationship with Molly.

This angered the exes and Molly then broke down in tears as she fumed that Georgia was diminishing her relationship.

She stormed off with Arabella Chi and said: ‘It’s a three and a half year relationship and she’s comparing it to her and Toby. What the f**k? I know I’m getting so upset but she’s p***ed me off.

‘It just really infuriates me that she’s trying to compare her and Toby to my three and a half year relationship that I stepped to the side for, for her to crack on.

‘I don’t understand how someone can be so self absorbed to that extent. It’s f***ing rude and then also trying to crack on with Tom? Make your mind up!’

Joanna Chimonides crying over Chris Taylor and Anton Danyluk’s fiery argument over ‘sexual chemistry’

Joanna Chimonides broke down in tears as a wild row erupted among the villa’s sexy singletons.

Things got heated around the firepit as Chris Taylor and Anton Danyluk got into a viscous argument over ‘sexual chemistry’ as the Islanders were encouraged to tell each other what they really thought of their pairings.

After being told to ‘chill out’ by his co-stars, Chris exploded at Anton: ‘It’s f***ing starting to p**s me off.’

During the game, Georgia Steel and Toby Aromolaran read out the questions, with the first being: ‘Which couple has the least sexual chemistry?’

Turning around he and Georgia Harrison ‘s blackboard, Anton revealed he had voted for Chris and Joanna and took a swipe at Chris’ ‘jokey’ personality.

He said: ‘Chris and Jo, purely because when we see you it’s really jokey and I get that’s a big part of your personality but again, I’ve just not seen that sort of display of affection with either of you.’

Chris admitted: ‘That’s a stinger that.’

Joanna added: ‘There’s nothing really else to say.’

Tensions began to rise as Toby read out the next question: ‘Which couple is the most one-sided?’

Speaking under his breath Casey O’Gorman said: ‘This is probably the easiest one isn’t it’.

Anton revealed he and Georgia H had chosen Chris and Joanna again, he explained: ‘Obviously Joanna’s expressed that she’s not feeling the same way’.

Butting in and circling back to the previous question, Joanna replied: ‘The fact that I’m exploring something else doesn’t mean that we didn’t have sexual chemistry, that we didn’t have anything like that.’

Casey added: ‘If you wanted to defend about the sexual chemistry, you should have said it then’.

Defending Joanna for processing her thoughts, Chris argued: ‘We’re allowed a bit of time to think about how we are feeling about things.’

‘Yeah, chill out, f***ing hell’, Casey replied.

Turning to Chris, Anton agreed: ‘Piping up way too much, mate’.

Chris was left unimpressed by the boys and added: ‘It’s f***ing starting to p***me off. Anton, what do you mean? What because I’m defending the situation?’

Raising her hands to her face Joanna couldn’t hold back her tears, she said: ‘I hate this f***ing game’.

The heartrate challenge

Molly and Callum awkwardly raised each other’s pulses the most in the heartrate challenge during Monday’s Love Island All Stars.

The heart rate game sees the Islanders dress up and perform a series of sexy dances to the group of the opposite sex who gather around the fire pit.

After the boys and girls stripped down to risqué outfits for the steamy challenge, the results revealed Callum and Molly, who split just last year, might still have a spark for one another.

As Callum and Molly surprisingly got each other’s pulses raised, Tom Clare was left fuming at the results.

Tom and Molly, who are seemingly going strength to strength in their couple, landed bottom of the challenge for failing to raise their hearts at all.

Tom had his heart raised by former flame Georgia Steel, while Callum manage to raise his partner Jess Gale’s heart.

Coming out triumphs in the challenge, Sophie Piper and Joshua Ritchie were the only couple to collectively raise each other’s hearts.

Minutes after Georgia Harrison revealed the results tension quickly rose between Molly, Callum and Tom, leaving the group too stunned for words.

Why are you returning to the famous Love Island Villa?

I had a fun experience the first time around but I didn’t go the full way and find love, so I’d love to find someone this time.

What will you do differently this time round?

I’m quite chilled and don’t want drama, so I think I will approach this time round in a similar way. I’m a one guy kind of girl.

Why do you think the Villa is the perfect place to find love?

It’s a once in a lifetime experience and not something that comes up every day.

A new book details some of the demons Sopranos star James Gandolfini faced — including problems with alcohol — while filming the later seasons of the legendary HBO series.

The three-time Emmy winner's personal struggles have been chronicled many times, with HBO executives admitting they feared he would die from alcohol. and drug binges before the end of the series.

A new book by Mark Kamine, a location scout on the show, details more of these issues in “On Locations: Lessons Learned from My Life On Set with The Sopranos and in the Film Industry.”

Kamine writes about how his experience with Gandolfini — who died of a heart attack in Rome in 2013 — began to fray in the show's fifth season.

The cast and crew stayed at the Monmouth Park racetrack in central New Jersey to film the episode featuring Tony Soprano's horse Pie-O-My.

As Kamine tells it, “I'm in the hotel bar when the crew member closest to Jim asks if I want to go to Atlantic City with Jim and a few others.”

Atlantic City, as Kamine notes, is about 80 miles from Monmouth.

Kamine said he rejected Gandolfini's offer and that “the next morning I'm not surprised if Jim can't be woken up.”

The location scout, who is now executive producer of HBO's The White Lotus, said Gandolfini's discomfort with fame led him to his darker impulses.

In one instance, Gandolfini didn't show up until he was four hours late and the entire time he was “cursing his way through his half-learned lines, doing take after take, drinking coffee and bottled water, alternately sheepish and boorish, the like him always is when he messes up,” Kamine wrote.

At the end of the series, the owner of the famous “Soprano house” where the family lived in North Caldwell, New Jersey, struck up a conversation with Gandolfini, as Kamine said he had done many times before.

'Jim interrupts and says, with more than a little regret, 'I'm really sorry, but my memory is a bit damaged and I can't remember, who are you?'

The author claims the owner was 'hurt' and 'shocked' by the mild event.

Kamine said at one point that Gandolfini was becoming “increasingly unreliable,” to the point that HBO held him financially responsible if his tardiness or excesses caused filming to be postponed or canceled.

His delays would sometimes anger his co-stars, as Kamine recalls Edie Falco – the iconic Carmela Soprano from Gandolfini's Tony – angrily reacting to the news that Gandolfini missed a day of shooting with “are you kidding me?”

Falco, on the other hand, was 'always fully prepared, always astonishing and immediate in character. She [was] nothing but an admirable presence on set throughout the entire run of the show,” Kamine said.

It had a negative effect on Gandolfini, he claims.

“Jim appears to be in awe and frustrated by her easy access to persuasive emotions,” Kamine wrote.

“He often gets into out-of-character, curses himself in the middle of the scene and calls up the script supervisor to give him lines.”

Kamine, however, notes “Gandolfini more than anyone else [creator] David [Chase] makes the performance [what] It is true that his expressive characteristics, rich lyrics and menacing, subdued gestures have a great and consistent impact.'

Because of that, and because of his genuine goodwill, the cast and crew tolerated the beloved star.

After each week of shooting, Gandolfini would order sushi for the cast and crew and at the end of each season, Gandolfini would gift the cast something usually worth hundreds of dollars, as well as custom engraved watches after the series finale.

Gandolfini was the intense and charismatic star of the show for its entire run from 1999 to 2007, but he struggled with alcohol and substance abuse and died of a heart attack in 2013 at just 51.

The actor's death saddened the world and sent ripples throughout Hollywood.

At the time of his death he was married to his second wife, actress Deborah Lin, with whom he had a daughter Liliane, now nine years old.

His son Michael, who was 14 when he found his father dead in a Rome hotel room, played a young Tony Soprano in the HBO prequel film Many Saints of Newark, released in October.

Michael, now 24, is the son of Gandolfini and his first wife, film producer Marcy Wudarski.

At least 91 people are dead across the U.S. as a result of an Arctic blast that put millions under winter weather advisories, but a new flooding threat is set to arrive across the southeast as temperatures rise.

More than 120 million Americans have been under winter weather alerts since Friday and the National Weather Service warned of wind chill in several states including New York, Illinois, Georgia and Louisiana at the weekend.

But as a new week begins, much of the south faces a potential of a flood warning each day, according to Fox Weather

Parts of the Gulf Coast are expected to see 3-5 inches of rain while spots throughout southeastern Florida could be drenched by as much as 10 inches.

The region has the potential for flash flooding until at least Thursday, according to The Weather Channel, which they’re calling a ‘reverse in seasons’ as the weather flips from freezing cold to potential record-breaking warm temperatures.

The continued cold weather is responsible for at least 27 deaths in Tennessee, according to the Tennessee Department of Health.

Just south in Mississippi, the state’s Emergency Management Agency said Sunday that 11 people have died of causes related to frigid weather since January 14.

Another 16 deaths have been linked to the weather in Oregon, including a pregnant 21-year-old, her 15-year-old brother and boyfriend after live cables fell on their car and shocked them to death.

Illinois, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Washington, Kentucky, Wisconsin, New York, New Jersey have also seen deaths. In total, 91 people have died due to the winter weather in January, according to CBS News

States as far south as Texas and Florida were still gripped by deadly arctic weather Sunday. Everywhere from New Jersey to Indiana to Alabama, people were still shoveling out snow.

Meteorologists warn of showers, fog and the accumulation of ice on slick surfaces that may complicate the Monday morning commute.

‘The greatest wintry concern for next week will be for travelers in the Midwest and Northeast,’ AccuWeather Meteorologist Dean DeVore said.

A thaw looms ahead for much of the country. Following sub-zero conditions Sunday morning, temperatures in Chicago may climb into the 30s each day from Monday to Wednesday.

Similarly, a low-teens Saturday night in New York City will be succeeded by highs in the 40s Tuesday and Wednesday.

But this warming introduces the possibility of ice-related problems in the southern Plains and part of the Mississippi Valley.

Much of the country will still face the potential for winter weather heading into the workweek.

Illinois is under a Winter Weather Advisory through Monday afternoon as freezing rain sweeps into the area, leading to total ice accumulations of up to 1/10th of an inch.

It may take until Monday night for conditions to improve in much of the state.

‘Icy conditions are likely to impact the Monday morning commute and could impact the evening commute as well,’ the NWS warned.

The agency issued a lengthy advisory in North Carolina warning of an Arctic cold wave lasting across the central portion of the state through the weekend.

Residents are encouraged to limit their time outside, layer up and check on those who may be more susceptible to the chill, like the elderly.

A surge of moisture will trigger rain, ice and snow from the Upper Midwest to the Northeast from Monday night to Wednesday.

Localized pockets of ice are anticipated to impact regions of northeast Texas to Michigan and Pennsylvania, while significant icing may occur Sunday night from southeast Oklahoma into central Missouri.

Most of the precipitation in the Northeast will likely fall north of Interstate 80, but pockets of ice are possible farther south through the Appalachians.

To complicate matters in the Northeast, an Arctic cold air front will cross southern Canada over the next few days. Several inches of snow are forecast in the northern tier of the Great Lakes and into the Northeast Monday night into Wednesday.

In regions along the Ohio River, the simple action of milder air flowing over cold ground may produce fog, clouds and ‘ground sweat’ even if it is not raining.

Patches of ice may develop on colder, untreated surfaces due to the condensation, and areas of fog and patchy rain may complicate travel in the Southeast.

Elsewhere, freezing rain, sleet and high wind gusts later Sunday would make traveling in parts of Kansas and Oklahoma particularly treacherous, the National Weather Service said.

Wind chills in Iowa made it feel like minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit in some parts.

But the end of subzero temperatures – which blasted into the U.S. on Friday – was in sight for parts of the country.

The daily high temperatures in Iowa´s capital of Des Moines, for example, were expected to stay above freezing starting Monday.

‘With no additional replenishment of arctic air from Canada, a steady warm-up is in store for the mid-section of the country,’ the weather service said.

The rising temperatures will be a relief to many across the country after the recent deep freeze has proved fatal.

Other areas have seen water pipes freeze in areas across the south that aren’t necessarily used to the deep cold.

On Sunday, crews in Memphis, Tennessee, continued to work around the clock to find and fix broken pipes that were causing low water pressure throughout the system.

Memphis Light, Gas and Water President and CEO Doug McGowen told reporters Sunday afternoon that crews are making progress and he expects most of the 700,000 people the utility services to have water restored over the next 24 hours.

They were repairing 10 water main breaks on Sunday afternoon, and McGowen said he expects to see more as the ground continues to thaw.

The utility said it previously repaired 41 broken water mains and located more than 4,000 leaks at homes and businesses.

Restaurants and bars were using bottled water to serve customers on Sunday. Some restaurants remained closed, citing the water issue, while others had a modified menu.

Memphis was the largest, but not the only, water system in Tennessee to experience problems from the unusually cold weather.

The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency said on Saturday night that 28 water systems have issued boil water notices.

In Vermont, temperatures in the single digits to low teens didn’t stop ice anglers and snowmobilers from their sport, and young ski jumpers braved the cold as they competed in northern New Hampshire

But 23 skiers and snowboarders had to be rescued in frigid temperatures on Saturday after becoming lost in the backcountry in Killington, Vermont, police said.

On the West Coast, more freezing rain was forecast in the Columbia River Gorge and the area was expected to remain near or below freezing through at least Sunday night.

Trees and power lines already coated with ice could topple if they get more, the National Weather Service warned.

Some residents in the town of Topanga were asked to evacuate due to mudslides, NBC Los Angeles reported.

‘Stay safe out there over the next several days as our region tries to thaw out,’ the weather service said. ‘Chunks of falling ice will remain a hazard as well.’

It would be hard to imagine that 23 months ago, when he rode around on his bike in a pink helmet, talking about swagger and nightlife and ending an eight-year streak of seriousness and earth tones in City Hall, the bicycle came in. it would be Eric Adams playing the role of Scrooge, while Bill de Blasio, newly divorced, is out there dating a married woman and wearing cobalt blue brought the heat. At one level, Eric Adams’ promise was that he would restore energy and charisma to a city emerging from a pandemic, that New York would become more assertive. pleasure. But in many ways it just seemed more Dickensian.

Consider the candlelight vigil held last week, eight days before Christmas, in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, to commemorate the last day of Sunday service for the local branch of the library. Budget cuts ordered by the mayor, which he says are inevitable in light of the burdens imposed by the migrant crisis, have meant that almost all libraries in the city will be closed on Sundays. They have also been forced to reduce spending on books, programs and building repairs. Emily Gallagher, a member of the State Assembly who attended the funeral meeting, mentioned the reductions “cruel and unnecessary.”

This week is one report from Columbia University’s Center for Justice outlined the dangers of solitary confinement, which is ubiquitous in the city’s prison system. Despite promises to end it, the report said, the Department of Correction simply rebranded the practice as “structurally restrictive housing.” It still isolated the prisoners 23 hours a day, just in slightly larger cells. In one case, the investigation found, prison guards forced an inmate to make sexually explicit comments while he sat naked in a squatting position, then placed him in solitary confinement for several months in an attempt to cover up their abuse.

The report urged the council to adopt a law that would ban solitary confinement and allow people in custody to leave their cells for at least 14 hours a day, with limited exceptions after outbursts of violence. The law was passed on Wednesday. But Mr. Adams opposed the bill all along and has threatened to veto it, arguing in a radio interview after the vote that the value of a disciplinary tactic that the United Nations has labeled torture essentially misunderstood by the ‘far left’, indifferent to the law. public safety.

There is no doubt that the steady flow of migrants from the border to a city mandated to shelter everyone has exponentially complicated the issue of its governance. Mr. Adams has repeatedly said the crisis is out of control in the absence of more funding and strategic assistance from the federal government. This week, he angered New Yorkers over billions of dollars in proposed cuts to direct their outrage at Washingtonmarch there demanding more money, a gesture that political observers immediately registered as overly aggressive because it would likely further alienate the Biden administration.

American shoppers, burdened by more than two years of rapid inflation, are getting some welcome relief this holiday season: Prices on many products are falling.

Toys are almost 3 percent cheaper this Christmas than last year, government data shows. Sporting goods have fallen by almost 2 percent. Higher priced items also show price drops: washing machines, for example, cost 12 percent less than a year ago. And eggs, whose prices rose rapidly last winter and became a prime example of the country’s inflation problem, have fallen 22 percent in the past year.

Consumer prices are still rising overall, but not nearly as fast as a year ago. Most groceries still cost more than a year ago. That includes most services, such as restaurant meals, haircuts and trips to the dentist. And housing costs, the largest monthly expense for most Americans, continue to rise for both renters and homebuyers. Overall, the price of physical goods has remained stable over the past year, while the price of services has risen just over 5 percent.

Still, economists see the moderation in commodity prices as an important step to put the high inflation of the past two and a half years more clearly in the rearview mirror. They expect this to continue: Most forecasters say prices for physical products will continue to fall next year, especially prices for more sustainably manufactured goods, where recent declines have been the largest. That should help soften price increases overall.

“We are just at the beginning of that phase and we should continue to see downward pressure on prices in this category,” said Michelle Meyer, Mastercard’s chief economist.

For consumers, who are gloomy about the economy despite low unemployment, falling prices for many goods could provide a psychological boost. After the rapid inflation of recent years, a mere slowdown in price increases may not seem like much to celebrate. But seeing prices drop could be a different story — especially since some of the biggest recent declines have been in categories that consumers typically pay the most attention to, like gasoline. (The price of regular gas, which reached $5 per gallon nationally in June 2022, has fallen to an average of just over $3, according to AAA.)

“People are going to lock in on certain prices,” said Neale Mahoney, a Stanford University economist who recently left a role in the Biden administration. “We know that people will find certain things too heavy.”

The price of many goods has soared in 2021, fueled by a surge in consumer demand accompanied by pandemic relief checks and supply chain disruptions that limited the supply of many products, especially those from abroad .

Many economists initially expected a quick turnaround, but instead prices continued to rise. Supply chains took longer to return to normal than expected, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine led to a spike in energy prices in 2022. At the same time, consumer demand for goods remained high and many companies took advantage of the opportunity to push down prices. and increase their profit margins.

Now, however, many of these powers are beginning to fade. Supply chains have largely returned to normal. Oil prices have fallen. Economic weakness in China and other countries has limited demand for many raw materials, which feeds into consumer prices.

Softer demand from US consumers could also play a role. The Federal Reserve has repeatedly raised interest rates since early last year in an effort to curb spending and keep inflation in check. Consumers have proven remarkably resilient so far, but retailers have reported in recent months that consumers have increasingly purchased cheaper items or waited for sales before purchasing; trends that could accelerate if the economy cools further next year.

“We think consumers will be looking for value, and that’s because they are very price sensitive,” Carlos E. Alberini, CEO of fashion retailer Guess, told investors last month. The company has “reexamined some of the pricing structure that we have across all brands,” he added.

Some toy manufacturers and retailers that sell toys have also said they expect sales this season to be less robust than in years past and have taken to advertising the affordability of their products.

At many companies, price cuts have taken the form of Black Friday sales and holiday promotions that are larger than in previous years for some product categories. At Signet Jewelers, the major diamond retailer, sales fell in the third quarter, and the company recently said it expected sales this holiday season to be lower than last year, partly due to “increased promotional activity.”

“It was a different holiday season,” Signet CEO Virginia C. Drosos told investors on a conference call this month. Instead of shopping early, customers are waiting to make their purchases and looking for deals, she said.

Matt Pavich, senior director of innovation and strategy at Revionics, a company that uses artificial intelligence to help retailers set prices, says companies are trying to lower prices before their competitors do.

“If prices drop, there will be a race to lower prices even further, and you have to take credit for that,” he said. “We will see retailers really trying to regain consumer trust.”

Still, prices for most products remain well above pre-pandemic levels. A dozen eggs cost about 50 cents more than in February 2020. Used car prices, another prominent example of pandemic sticker shock, are down more than 10 percent from their peak early last year but are 37 percent higher than in February 2020.

Service prices are still rising faster than before the pandemic. Some economists say commodity prices will have to fall further before headline inflation returns to the Federal Reserve’s target of 2 percent per year.

“We need quite substantial deflation, and I wouldn’t call what we’re seeing ‘substantial,'” said Wendy Edelberg, director of the Hamilton Project, an economic policy arm of the Brookings Institution. “It’s not even substantial in a historical context.”

Durable goods prices fell for much of the two decades leading up to the pandemic. Long-term trends such as globalization and automation have generally driven down production costs. Fierce competition among retailers, especially with the rise of online shopping, meant that most of these savings were passed on to consumers.

In contrast, the prices of services rarely fall, partly because wages account for a much larger share of the costs of most services. During the decade before the pandemic, services prices gradually rose while goods prices remained flat or fell, resulting in an extended period of stable, moderate inflation.

Economists do not expect outright deflation, with prices for both goods and services falling. That’s a good thing: general price declines are generally considered economically dangerous if they persist.

There are a few reasons. For starters, deflation could theoretically cause consumers to postpone spending, creating a downward spiral. It may be unlikely that people will buy today what they expect to buy cheaper tomorrow. Once deflation takes hold, it can be difficult to escape: Japan has been stuck in a deflationary pattern since the late 1990s.

“When demand in the economy is weak, the last thing you want is someone saying, ‘I’m not going to buy that car today because in six months it’s going to be $600 cheaper,’” says economist Karen Dynan. at Harvard.

On the other hand, companies are unlikely to raise wages in a world where they cannot charge more. And if wages don’t rise – or even fall – it will become more difficult for households to keep up with fixed costs, such as mortgage interest payments.

But while broad-based price declines are a problem, most economists see the more limited declines now occurring as a sign that the economy is gradually moving past the pandemic’s disruptions.

“Supply chains have essentially normalized,” said Neil Dutta, head of economic research at Renaissance Macro. “Household demand behavior has actually normalized, the dollar is still quite strong. I would see no reason why commodity prices would increase.”

Harry and Meghan’s Netflix series is less popular than Peppa Pig, official figures show.

Documentary by the couple about their departure from royal life was watched for a total of 62 million hours on Netflix in the first half of 2023 – while the children’s cartoon’s first two seasons combined for more than 140 million hours.

To put that into context, 60 million hours watched is the equivalent of one million people watching an hour-long episode once.

The streaming giant released the figures after receiving criticism for not being transparent about how its content is performing.

The first season of the political thriller The Night Agent was the most watched Netflix show in the first half of the year.

The Night Agent, which premiered on the platform on March 23, was watched 812 million hours in about three months.

Revenge thriller The Glory finished in third place with 623 million hours viewed.

The first season of comedy-horror Wednesday, which launched last November, racked up 507 million hours watched, while period drama Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story totaled 503 million hours.

The company first shared the comprehensive ratings list, detailing how many hours each show was watched between January and June, as part of a semi-annual report.

The first episodes of the sixth series of The Crown, released last month, were not eligible.

Netflix’s engagement document included more than 18,000 titles, with a total of almost 100 billion hours watched in the six months. There were almost 4,000 shows from different countries at the bottom of the list with only 100,000 hours watched.

The report states: ‘Success on Netflix is not only determined by the number of hours watched.

“What matters is whether a film or TV show thrilled audiences and the size of that audience relative to the economy.”

Criticism of Netflix for not releasing data sooner was at the center of the Hollywood strikes. Actors and writers called for higher royalties for shows that did well on such platforms.

Other onboard amenities include noise-canceling headphones, free WiFi, cashmere blankets and plush bedding.

He says that as the Four Seasons trip progresses, you get to know “everyone on the flight” so that “you can hang out with some of the guests or chat with the crew.”

“It made the flights go by very quickly,” he muses.

Justin took advantage of the crystal clear waters and booked a snorkeling excursion while in Bora Bora. One morning he also had his breakfast delivered via a traditional Polynesian canoe.

Justin’s next visit took him to the city of Sydney, where he stayed at a Four Seasons hotel “right in the city center with direct views of the Opera House and just a stone’s throw from the promenade.”

At this point in the video, the travel expert highlights how Four Seasons has taken into account time changes and the length of each flight to “reduce and minimize the effects of jet lag during this 24-day trip.”

The final part of Justin’s video diary captures his part of the trip to Indonesia, where he checked into the Four Seasons Resort Bali in Sayan.
