Venezuelan opposition appoints new candidate in Show of Unity

Venezuela’s embattled opposition announced Friday it has named a new candidate to take on President Nicolas Maduro this summer, bringing renewed hope to the country’s push for democracy.

The country’s highest court barred the previous candidate, former lawmaker María Corina Machado, from running in January, leaving many Venezuelans wondering how free and fair the elections would be. The decision raised questions about whether Ms. Machado’s party, Come Venezuela, would try to push for her candidacy or unite around another candidate.

On Friday. leaders of several opposition parties announced that Corina Yoris, professor of philosophy, would run for office in the July 28 elections, a move that analysts saw as a surprising show of unity.

“This is huge,” said Laura Dib, who directs the Venezuela program at the Washington Office on Latin America, a human rights organization. “It is truly astonishing to see the opposition united around a single strategy and showing that they are not backing down.”

In October, Maduro signed a deal with the country’s opposition, agreeing to work toward a free and fair presidential election. In the deal, Maduro said he would hold elections before the end of this year, and in return the United States lifted some economic sanctions as a sign of goodwill.

But days later, Ms. Machado won more than 90 percent of the vote to choose an opposition candidate, in primaries organized by a committee without government intervention. The decisive results highlighted her popularity and raised the prospect that she could defeat Mr Maduro in a general election.

Three months later, the country’s highest court, filled with government loyalists, declared Ms. Machado ineligible for an investigation into what the judges said were financial irregularities that took place when she was a national lawmaker. The government also arrested several members of its campaign. Men on motorcycles have attacked supporters at her events.

Ms Machado made the announcement at a press conference with Ms Yoris on Friday, just days before the March 25 deadline to register.

“We have found a person who I trust completely, honorably, who will perform this procedure,” Ms. Machado said. “This was a decision that emerged from the discussion about unitary forces and gives us all confidence.”

Ms Yoris was a member of the committee that helped organize the October primaries, sparking speculation that the government might not allow her to register as a candidate. The government has questioned the legitimacy of the opposition primaries and has taken legal action against the organisers.

The fact that the head of another rival opposition party, Omar Barboza, opened the conference was a further show of unity, Ms Dib said.

“We are moving towards a transition path in Venezuela,” Ms Yoris said. “We are all needed in this moment.”

The Great British Bake Off will reportedly remain on Channel 4 for another three years – after the hit series was at the center of a £100million tug-of-war between streaming giants before its contract with Channel 4 expired.

Reports earlier this month suggested that Netflix and other streaming channels could be enticed into attempting to move the beloved show to a rival broadcaster.

But according to The mirrorbosses are close to agreeing a new three-year deal for the series.

A TV source said: ‘There were some raised eyebrows at Channel 4 when reports suggested Bake Off could be moving in recent weeks as they are in the middle of negotiations.

‘But as far as the bosses are concerned, they have all the ingredients they deem necessary for a brilliant partnership on the show, and that’s something they want to continue.

It comes after claims emerged that the show could be forced to move to a streaming giant due to Channel 4’s ‘money problems’.

The channel axed several shows in 2023, reportedly to control costs, and last month it was reported that GBBO could be its next show.

The broadcaster’s contract to air the competition reportedly expires after the 2024 series, and it was claimed at the time that there was no talk of renewing it.

The sun claimed that Netflix and Disney+ were mentioned as potential buyers.

A source said: ‘The participation of two major companies in the race has massively increased the value of the show, which is already sought after for its global appeal.

‘Streamers also want to combine their model with shows that air at the same time and day every week.

Channel 4 is also said to be planning to cut 200 jobs after a huge drop in television advertising.

The show, judged by Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith and presented by Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond, launched on the BBC in 2010.

However, it was bought by Channel 4 in 2016 for £25 million, a shockwave that saw the original presenters sensationally quit.

Netflix currently has the rights to broadcast Bake Off in America, while ITV came close to bidding for the UK rights during the last round of negotiations, but decided against it.

Channel 4 said: ‘Any speculation around contracts is just that and we look forward to bringing many more soaking bottoms to our viewers in the future.’

Netflix and Disney+ declined to comment.

Judge Prue recently broke her silence on the claims and opened up The mirror: ‘Oh my God, I hope to stay with Bake Off wherever it goes. But I don’t think it will move.

‘I know a lot of people are struggling and Channel 4 has lost a lot of shows.

‘But I’m pretty sure as long as Channel 4 is around they will continue to follow Bake Off. It’s certainly one of their best shows. I think it has found its natural home on Channel 4.”

Brooke Boney has shared a touching message with her fans after announcing her shock resignation from the Today Show live on air on Friday.

In an Instagram post after the news broke, the TV star shared a moody image of herself on the street, along with a heartfelt caption.

The 36-year-old TV presenter confirmed in an emotional announcement on Friday’s program that she will be leaving Channel Nine’s breakfast show to pursue her dreams.

Boney has been part of the show for five years as a news and entertainment reporter, but is now leaving to study abroad.

She confirmed on air that she will move abroad to study at Oxford University from September, leaving the show after the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris in August.

‘I have very big news for you this morning. I have been offered a place at Oxford University later this year, which means I will be leaving the show after the Olympics,” Boney said on air on Friday.

“I don’t want to go into too much of it now as there will be plenty of time for goodbyes and thank yous, but I just wanted to share this good/bad news with you this morning.”

Boney will take an intensive one-year Masters of Public Policy course, which focuses on economics and policymaking.

She was flooded with support from her colleagues and co-stars, including Tracy Vo who said: “Awesome Brooke! What a huge adventure awaits us. Congratulations!’

The rising Nine star admitted the decision to leave her role on the program was ‘very difficult’.

“It was a dream of mine to be able to study at a foreign university, and it just felt like the right time to take that step,” she explained.

“I’m so grateful to come here every day and I love you all so much. So it made the decision very difficult. But it just means you all have to plan trips to Britain to come visit me.”

Boney was comforted by her co-host Sarah Abo as she was left teary-eyed after sharing her big news, admitting she had “mixed emotions” over her love for her job.

‘My head currently running. My heart is beating very fast,” she added.

The TV presenter, 36, confirmed she will leave Channel Nine’s breakfast show to pursue her dreams in an emotional announcement on Friday’s programme, breaking down in tears.

“The good news is you can meet my daughter to check in,” Stefanovic also joked about his daughter Willow, 18, who is studying at the London College of Fashion.

However, Boney assured fans that she will be on screens for a few more months as she will cover the 2024 Olympics live from Paris.

“We’re going to have a great time in Paris,” she said.

According to the course prospectus, the curriculum focuses on modules in economics, public policy, law and the politics of policymaking.

“It is a transformative opportunity for current and future leaders with a commitment to public service,” the course description adds.

Speak with NineBoney described working on the Today Show as a ‘privilege’ and said ‘never in her wildest dreams’ did she think she would be on the programme.

Despite her big change, she hasn’t ruled out a return to television in the future and hopes her studies will help her decide what to do next in her career.

‘I thought: if I don’t do this now, I probably never will. “I’m at that age where if I leave now, go to college and come back, I’ll only be 38,” she said.

‘That still leaves plenty of time to figure out the next part of my career.

Despite her big change, she hasn’t ruled out a return to television in the future and hopes her studies will help her decide what to do next in her career.

“I would love to come back and still do stuff with Nine and figure out what that looks like.”

An iconic 1980s band has been forced to sell their concert tickets for a fraction of the original price as they struggle to fill their upcoming show.

Electro-pop duo Ochestral Maneuvers In The Dark may have been around for 46 years, but it seems their popularity is waning.

The band, fronted by Wirral lads Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys, play London’s O2 next Sunday, but they are being forced to sell tickets cheaply.

The musicians have engaged a seat-filling service to ensure there is a sufficient audience on the evening.

Officially, tickets retail for upwards of £60, but the band have also quietly listed the show on the website ShowFilmFirst, with tickets priced at just £10, in an attempt to sell out.

During their long career, OMD has sold 15 million albums and 25 million singles and boasts an impressive seven Top Ten singles, including Enola Gay and Maid Of Orleans.

It’s time to put to rest the rumors that King Charles III has died, speculation that has certainly been fueled by his recent cancer diagnosis and by the bumbling reports of Catherine, Princess of Wales, as she recovers from surgery in January. According to Buckingham Palacethe king is alive – and apparently healthy enough to stage a fashion show.

An exhibition of garments made as part of a collaboration between Charles and designers Vin Cara and Omi Ong, called Vin + Omi, opens on Saturday at Sandringham Estate, the royal family’s private property in Norfolk County, England.

The designers created the clothes for the ‘Royal Garden Waste to Fashion’s Future’ exhibition using waste from the gardens of Sandringham and Highgrove House, Charles’ private home in Gloucester. Mr Cara and Mr Ong have been working with Charles, a keen gardener and long-time advocate of healthy urban planning and sustainability, since 2018 when, at a gala dinner, he suggested using discarded nettle from Highgrove as material for a collection they are showing in London .

Mr Cara and Mr Ong, whose Word has it that fans are too Kate Moss, Beyoncé and Michelle Obama have since built relationships with gardeners at the royal estates. But Charles’ personal involvement in the partnership has continued unabated.

Celebrity Big Brother fans were shocked on Thursday night when Bradley Riches was brutally evicted.

Following the double eviction of Marisha Wallace and Zeze Millz on Tuesday, Will Best and AJ Odudu host revealed that despite there being six contestants left, only five will make it to the end due to another eviction.

The public were given the vote to save their favorite housemate, with Bradley, 22, ultimately eliminated a day before the grand final.

However, viewers criticized the show for the way it portrayed the Heartstopper actor, calling it “brutal and cruel.”

In the last episode, the housemates were surprised by a loved one at the secret meeting place.

While David Potts got to see his best friend and Colson Smith got a visit from his mother.

Fern Britton cried when he saw her youngest daughter, while Nikita Kuzmin was also in tears when he saw his girlfriend.

However, when it was Bradley’s turn to sit anxiously on the park bench as the other celebrities watched, he was met by host AJ.

She told the star he wouldn’t see a loved one as she instead informed him he would be evicted after receiving the fewest votes.

His housemates gasped in shock at the revelation, while Bradley tried to hide his disappointment.

He gave AJ a hug and said, “I had so much fun. I didn’t think I would make it this far. I’m so proud of everyone and I’m very thankful, very thankful and very happy.”

He was able to return to the house one last time to say goodbye before being sent home through a backdoor eviction.

Miriam Margolyes today left an Australian talk show host speechless after pointedly asking him “what are you, anyway?” as the pair discussed the war between Israel and Palestine.

Waleed Aly, host of Australian current affairs show The Project on Channel 10, found himself at a loss for words during today’s episode when the British-Australian actress derailed a discussion about Gaza with the out of the blue question.

Margolyes, who is Jewish, strongly called for an immediate ceasefire — a statement that seemed to resonate with the studio audience.

“Now a truce,” she demanded. “Whether you’re black or white, it doesn’t matter.”

She then turned to Aly and asked bluntly, “What are you anyway?” You’re a bit tan!’

Aly looked visibly surprised, but after a moment he lowered his head and chuckled.

“This is actually a very interesting question,” he replied. ‘I’ve thought about this a lot. I’m not kidding about that. I’m Egyptian.’

“Oh really,” Margolyes replied, causing the audience to laugh.

‘I love the Egyptian people. “I am on the side of the Palestinians,” she said.

‘I have to tell you that now. As Jews we must always say what we are. Are we for Israel or are we against Israel? I am only for humanity,” she added, before repeating: “Ceasefire.”

Aly is a seasoned journalist known for her in-depth and often complex conversations, and has a PhD in research into global terrorism.

Both his parents are Egyptian, but he was born and raised in Australia.

The veteran presenter light-heartedly acknowledged the unexpected twist after being caught off guard.

“Well, I think it’s safe to say the conversation didn’t go as predicted!” he said to a chuckling audience.

Never one to mince her words, Margolyes simply replied with characteristic bluntness, “What the heck. It is important!’

Margolyes’ appearance on the Channel 10 show was well received, with viewers taking to social media to praise her humor and calling for her to return to the show.

Holly Willoughby has hired Maya Jama and Sam Smith PR in a bid to ‘expand her global brand’.

The 43-year-old presenter, who quit ITV’s This Morning last October, is now represented by Cherry PR – who have an impressive portfolio of stars under their belt.

It comes after MailOnline revealed Holly has signed with Netflix to host a famous jungle-based reality show called Bear Hunt. along with star survival expert Bear Grylls.

A source has now told the newspaper Mirror: ‘After everything she went through last year, those around Holly felt like she might be stepping out of the spotlight. Her ordeal dented her self-confidence. But with this new move, she actually plans to expand her brand further than ever before.

“She believes the team are the best people to help make this happen and is excited to be working with them.”

It comes after Holly sensationally signed with Netflix to host a celebrity jungle-based reality show called Bear Hunt, MailOnline can exclusively reveal.

The presenter, who quit ITV’s This Morning last October, will appear on the show alongside star survival expert Bear Grylls.

Described by television insiders as a more challenging version of the BBC’s Survivor, it will see celebrity contestants face off against Grylls. The film will take place in the South American jungle.

It is Holly’s first show outside of terrestrial television.

A show insider told MailOnline: ‘It’s a great and exciting new series and of course a great challenge for Holly.

“It’s a great opportunity for her.”

In the show, which is produced by Grylls’ company, he will chase celebrity contestants and when he catches them, they will be eliminated.

Holly’s new job comes just days after Cat Deeley replaced her on This Morning, five months after she announced her departure.

She will begin filming the program later this year and it is expected to air in 2025.

Netflix bosses are said to be ‘ecstatic’ that they were able to hire her. One said: ‘Holly was their woman on this project from the start.

“They are absolutely thrilled to have gotten her on the line, hopefully there will be many more opportunities to work with her.”

Holly, 43, will be familiar with the jungle environment.

In 2018, she co-presented I’m A Celeb with Declan Donnelly – the highest-rated series ever.

She replaced Ant McPartlin who was in rehab for alcohol and painkiller addiction and was hailed a great success.

She also presented Freeze the Fear with Dutch extreme athlete Wim Hof in 2022, which was shown on BBC One.

Holly’s new role comes just days after The Mail on Sunday revealed that ITV have offered her a lucrative new contract to host next year’s series of their skating show, Dancing On Ice.

She is expected to accept the deal after happily presenting the program alongside her long-time friend and colleague Stephen Mulhern.

A source from the show said: ‘Holly really loved it this year, she found it really fun and enjoyable.’

“Contrary to speculation, while I met the man when he was a teenager and was asked to help him get on television, it wasn’t until he started working on the show that it became more than just a friendship.

‘That relationship was unwise, but not illegal. It’s over now.’
